File transfer progress bars generally aren't worth shit, I have no idea how this is still a problem. It dates back to the early 90's, and it's still not done properly. Almost everything to do with file transfer report it to be finished before it actually is, because it doesn't consider write back cache. So it's only the reading part that is finished, not the writing part. Meaning the transfer isn't actually finished. Never never never trust it is my motto. Personally I'd rather not have the dysfunctional progress bar, if I could have an actually accurate completion notification.
PS: I just switched back to KDE/Plasma after many years. Overall I'm pretty pleased, but also a bit puzzled about a lot of the simplifications. like inability to disable caps lock, and the inability to change double click speed for the mouse. So now I need a startup command for the caps lock, and I needed to edit an ini file for the mouse for such simple things, that used to be accessible through settings??? But they finally added the ability to use numpad for hotkeys, which I found out, and was what made me switch back to KDE. Now I only miss the ability to use the scroll wheel on hotkeys too. To finally have similar functionality like I had 10-15 years ago with Compiz. 😜

AFAIK it can actually destroy the USB if it's removed while being written.
You can use sync in terminal. But it's tricky because it sometimes returns even when the writing isn't finished. My method is to use sync multiple time, if it returns immediately 2 times it should be clear, Only then do i dismount the stick, because I don't like to dismount a device with pending operations. But when the dismount says the stick is ready to be removed, you should be clear.

Xfce comes with a wayland session using labwc out of the box, but was also tested with Wayfire. The devs state you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for the native window manager xfwm to be ported into a Wayland compositor, since they don't know if/when it will be done. Almost all other Xfce components support Wayland now, while retaining X11 compatibility.
LXQt's newest stable release has full Wayland support, with 7 different Wayland compositors to choose from within a GUI settings menu: Labwc, KWin, Wayfire, Hyprland, Sway, River and Niri

For example, in a game (using wine, which uses Xorg by default currently) your global shortcut will work. But in a wayland native window like Firefox, it will not if its the active window

If you don't mess with the partitions during the install and don't format, and make the same username, you should be back to normal after a reinstall. Take a backup offline, of course.

Arch is aimed at people who know their shit so they can build their own distro based on how they imagine their distro to be. It is not a good distro for beginners and non power users, no matter how often you try to make your own repository, and how many GUI installers you make for it. There's a good reason why there is no GUI installer in arch (aside from being able to load it into ram). That being that to use Arch, you need to have a basic understanding of the terminal. It is in no way hard to boot arch and type in archinstall. However, if you don't even know how to do that, your experience in whatever distro, no matter how arch based it is or not, will only last until you have a dependency error or some utter and total Arch bullshit® happens on your system and you have to run to the forums because you don't understand how a wiki works.
You want a bleeding edge distro? Use goddamn Opensuse Tumbleweed for all I care, it is on par with arch, and it has none of the arch stuff.
You have this one package that is only available on arch repos? Use goddamn flatpak and stop crying about flatpak being bloated, you probably don't even know what bloat means if you can't set up arch. And no, it dosent run worse. Those 0,0001 seconds don't matter.
You really want arch so you can be cool? Read the goddamn 50 page install guide and set it up, then we'll talk about those arch forks.
(Also, most arch forks that don't use arch repos break the aur, so you don't even have the one thing you want from arch)
Any windows power user or dev on a mac can follow a wiki, read a bit and learn.
Good for beginners? I didn't describe a beginner right here. Anybody with experience in computing will find arch straightforward and satisfying. Heck, a CS student would probably go through a first install process faster than I do after 5 years.
What are the concept involved? Partitioning, networking, booting... These are all familiar fields to tons of very normal computer users.
Arch can be a good first distro to anyone who knows what a computer is doing (or is willing to learn)
The first Linux I used wasn't part of any distro. A few years later I compiled Slackware to run bind and Sendmail.
Last year I tried Arch in a VM. I got to where it expected me to know what partitions to create for root and swap and noped out. It's not 1996. I don't have time for those details any more. No one should. Sane defaults have been in other distros for decades.
On the contrary, I'd still argue it's a good distro for beginners, but not for newbies. people who are tech-sawy and not hesitant to learn new things.
I jumped straight into EndeavorOS when I switched to Linux, since arch was praised as the distro for developers, for reasons.
Sure, I had some issues to fight with, but it taught me about all the components (and their alternatives) that are involved in a distro.
So, once you have a problem and ask for help, the first questions are sorts of "what DE/WM do you use?... is it X11 or wayland? are you using alsa or pipewire?".
Windows refugees (like me) take so many things for granted, that I think this kind of approach really helps in understanding how things work under the hood. And the Arch-wiki is just a godsend for thst matter. And let's be real, you rarely look into Arch-wiki for distros other than Arch itself, since they mostly work OOTB.
The Arch-wiki was my main reason for switching to arch. When I used an ubuntu based distro I felt like I had to rely on forum posts to figure out anything whereas with arch everything is documented incredibly well

"Linux the kernel" is a wonder of the software world. One free and open source kernel codebase to rule them all, a culture, a license that enshrines that culture. The kernel is great as it is.
"Linux the kernel packaged with software used on the desktop" is flaming garbage. That's not to say it's worse, modern windows is like using the lava from Chernobyl to keep warm on a brisk evening. MacOS is relatively acceptable but Apple isn't. Open source BSD based OSes are cumbersome on the edges of general computing. Android is all but Google OS at this point. Ultimately no practical, actually useful alternatives to linux on the desktop actually exist. This does NOT mean we have to convince ourselves it is actually good.
"Linux the kernel and a server OS package" is great, can't go wrong with this. Love it, genuinely.
"Linux for embedded devices" is a fucking travesty. Still happens.

To me, the saddest thing about LLM powered genAI is that the technology is actually really cool but thanks to capitalism and greed, it's been built out in the worst possible way. Trained on stolen, unattributed information of all kinds. Tweaked and tuned by hand by an army of clandestine underpaid overseas labor. Stealing power and water from mostly working class folks. Slapped on anything and everything whether we want it or not tasked with replacing services that actually work with something that fundamentally cannot match their performance.
Like, the ability to understand natural language regardless of how it's written is super cool. The ability to take mountains of input and turn it into a model that can create output that looks like the correct answer in a way a person would create it is pretty neat. It's not necessarily accurate but in the right situation, and with qualified people, that can be accounted for. It never should have been unleashed on the public as a generic chatbot. That's the worst, most wasteful use for it. They don't understand that it isn't thinking. They don't understand how bad it is for the environment. It needed a few more years, maybe a decade, in labs and with specialists. Not this. This is garbage. This is apocalyptic.
Entire businesses are being built on misunderstandings, on lies. Real people have been fired to be replaced by a GIGO regurgitation engine. Certain end-users are treating chat confabulations like oracles from a god and failing to exercise the most basic fact checking. It's turning us into liars and addicts. Lives are being ruined.
If it's any consolation none of the AIs and chatbots out right now have a fucking clue about the language they're projectile vomiting out. To me it's a toy, nothing more.
I enjoy playing with it, and it can do some interesting things, but the amount of times I have to correct it's output is insane. Things like, "The sky isn't blue on Venus. It's more of a yellow color thanks to its atmospheric content. How might a beautiful spring picnic look like on Venus?" and the damn AI insisits it's got blue skies, green grass, and isn't 900°F outside.
@gme Agree that it's a toy. After I posted that and went to bed last might, I was thinking about some if the image, audio, and video synthesis it churns out. Being able to parse a rambling set of instructions about what the user wants and then munging its massive data set into something that matches the prompt is very impressive, six-fingered nonwithstanding. They will never "solve" confabulation because that's just how it works. It's all just stringing numbers / tokens together in a way that probabilistically meets the prompt. It could have been developed and released in a much more socially responsible manner. It's neat. From an academic standpoint, they've been discovering unexpected and impressive emergent functionality. That's the cool part. We didn't need to exploit, bully, and steal to learn it; but that's sure as hell how we did it.
Speaking of confabulation... When the AI chatbot correctly figures out what's going on in this video I'll know then that it's either safe to use, or it'll mark the end of the World.

I am not convinced the AI understood one word of what it wrote, and why. Of course to prove my hypothesis one would need to come up with an entirely novel and original source to feed into the AI to test it's reason and perception skills.
@gme @n_dimension of course it didn't understand it. It's not a general AI. It doesn't think or know or care about anything. It can create something that looks like thought because our brains love to anthropomorphize things. The output is fancy math based autocomplete. Nothing more. It's cool, but it's not thinking.
I think that the coolest thing about #AI is that it forces us to REALLY try to understand what HUMAN thinking is. We have made some breakthroughs in our model of consciousness with the Penrose -Susskind models. We actually have papers now that support empirically that Consciousness is a quantum phenomena.
So our current models will likely never be truly conscious, until we port them to quantum computers. But then again, if the LLMs fake it well enough...will it matter?

For a very long time, the Turing test was the gold standard for benchmarking AI. We thought, that once machines pass the Turing test, we will have true AI. Of course, the current frontier models blow past Turing benchmark easily.
So the ARC (Abstract reasoning Corpus) was developed to really task AI. It's now is in its third iteration (ARC3?) because once again the frontier #LLM models blew past V1 and V2
We have just developed what we ominously call "Humanities Last Exam" which fails AIs because it relies on super specific knowledge of subject that are very specialised.
However, given that AI exhibit a capability called "zero-shot". That's giving output for data they have not been trained on, I don't give much life expectancy to HLE. Will we have reached #AGI in 18 months when HLE is broken by the machines? And will it matter anymore?
Ultimately I think it matters if the AI is able to be creative and generate new and original art.
I think creativity is a fundamental requirement of the "quantum" thing that forms consciousness.
Elephants and dogs have been shows to be creative when given tools and instruments they can use, and the correct opportunity.
I'm reminded of a scene in the game "Detroit Become Human" where one of the protagonist androids showing emergent behavior is asked to paint something for the character he is caring for and at first the android simply produces a reproduction from its visual sensors.
I don't know/ remember if the character was ever able to show true creativity but it came damn close in the game. (It was Marcus for anyone wondering).
I realize now I set up a dunk shot without dunking: Basically, agentic AI involves you consenting to give AI control over your computer, with the idea that instead of actually pressing keys you tell the system what you want it to do and how, and it figures out the most expedient way to comply with your request.
As much as I detest the term "agentic AI" for all that it stands for, it's a term that everyone should understand and be conversant about. If you thought we had problems already with systems being compromised by botnets, wait until everyone and his mom starts handing control over their system to agentic AI. It won't be long now.
There are a number of AI platforms now that will allow people to engage agentic AI bots, and I have to say these places are generally libertarian utopias. It's kind of like CoPilot, but w/out any of the ethical and security guardrails.

the image generation farms that sprouted up to let people use img/vid models like sdxl/ponyXL/flux are full of what I would consider to be abuse material in spite of being generated.
there are a ton of loras and checkpoints with activation keywords for prompts to call a function; removing clothing and inpainting what the model believes their naked body looks like, for example. a lot of "looks 14 but" and similar language that i can only flag so many of before it gets overwhelming.
I think people are going to love it when their agent spends real money on fake tickets and hotel reservations for their real trip, because scammers are DEFINITELY going to be among the first to make agentic endpoints for those kinds of transactions.
And those AIs are all owned and operated by mega billionaires with their own agendas and abilities to control how the AI things and what it is programmed to tell people...
Many people work in data mining and database administration and coding. Don't use the term AI privately. I would then use it publicly because they want you to understand what they're saying. But privately, it's not AI, it's BG. It's a bullshit generator and you can never trust it. Sometimes it provides useful answers, and sometimes it lies, and sometimes it hallucinates. And it is always, always, always, always a point of failure for any process.

And when that AI agent is tricked into believing the best way to accomplish a task is to install spyware? Or to open holes in firewalls? Or to respond on your behalf to the Arab prince email who just needs all your personal and banking information to make a temporary transfer and compensate you millions for your troubles? To the people who say this is hyperbole, I say, they lack imagination.
I can just see the results now. The least bad case is the "agent" draining your bank account because you didn't tell it not to exceed a certain cost. The worst case involves military showing up at your door because it decided to hack a few sensitive systems along the way. These things will require all the skill of a good engineer in specifying the prompt, will be used by people who think clicking on links in a browser is too complicated.
Just FYI, I was asked to talk about what's ahead for AI and then freaked out because I don't know anything about AI. So I set aside a few days to sit w/ a couple of the best red-teamers I know.
Tl;dr: one told it to mimic the IT infrastructure of the target environment, and then run a battery of tests using APIs for some vulnerability testing services. He told it to dox the employees of the targeted company; to provide a roadmap for exploitable vulnerabilities. It did all this and more. The expert said the resulting report produced by the agentic AI bot was the equivalent of an entire team of red-teamers working for a week. The compute time cost less than $10.

Almost everything to do with file transfer report it to be finished before it actually is, because it doesn't consider write back cache. So it's only the reading part that is finished, not the writing part. Meaning the transfer isn't actually finished.
Never never never trust it is my motto. Personally I'd rather not have the dysfunctional progress bar, if I could have an actually accurate completion notification.
PS: I just switched back to KDE/Plasma after many years. Overall I'm pretty pleased, but also a bit puzzled about a lot of the simplifications.

But they finally added the ability to use numpad for hotkeys, which I found out, and was what made me switch back to KDE. Now I only miss the ability to use the scroll wheel on hotkeys too. To finally have similar functionality like I had 10-15 years ago with Compiz. 😜

Only then do i dismount the stick, because I don't like to dismount a device with pending operations.
But when the dismount says the stick is ready to be removed, you should be clear.
