Estrack - Half a century of European satellite tracking

2025 marks a landmark year for Europe’s ‘bridge between Earth and space’. The European Space Agency’s Estrack satellite tracking network turns 50.

Since its inception in 1975, Estrack – ESA’s global network of ground stations – has formed the vital communication bridge between satellites in orbit and mission control at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany.

Now comprising six stations spanning six countries, Estrack has grown into a strategic asset for Europe, enabling communication with spacecraft, transmitting commands and receiving scientific data.

The network keeps an eye on satellites no matter their location: tracking them across Earth orbit, voyaging to comets or asteroids, keeping station at the scientifically important Sun-Earth Lagrange points, and deep into our Solar System. It even keeps tabs on European launchers as they soar into orbit, ensuring no rocket is ever out of reach.

Fittingly, this celebration of technological excellence coincides with the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II and the 50th anniversary of ESA. To honour this convergence of milestones, ESA and the Vienna Tourist Board are orchestrating a unique mission: broadcasting The Blue Danube Waltz to its destined home among the stars.

Don’t miss the live concert of the Wiener Symphoniker (Vienna Symphony Orchestra) on Saturday, 31 May. The event will start at 20:30 CEST and the transmission from ESA’s Cebreros antenna will occur at 21:30 CEST.

The industry term for this is ‘demand side’ response. It involves nudging households and organisations to spread their use of power across the day, so avoiding those spells when demand is high. In other words, it amounts to energy rationing.

AI Europe and the rest. I am still very impressed by how Germany and Western Europe intend to achieve this. All parties in the German Bundestag have decided to drastically increase the military budget. A cross-party front for war. If you read non-Western newspapers, the tenor is clear: “Germany is Nazi again.” What can one say? Yes, it's true.

Apart from this depressing realization, what is particularly striking is how far Germany and the EU are falling behind technologically. It is more than disconcerting. There seems to be a complete failure to recognize what is happening. I'm not even sure if the US has figured that out. Artificial intelligence, neural networks, LLMs—that's not ChatGPT, which you can use to ask funny questions on your Apple phone. Calling it “intelligence” was a clever move from the start. It makes users feel like they are intelligent themselves. But AI is just as intelligent as a fountain pen. I only see two groups that are really using it wisely. One is China, and the other is the digital underground, especially on its dark fringes. This is not only a gift to the world and to humanity. It is also an incredible boost to innovation, especially for China itself.

In China, LLMs, Deepseeks, and ChatGPTs play a lesser role. Instead, neural networks are used to control processes in industry, logistics, and society in general. The West likes to believe that everything in China is centrally controlled, that it is all autocracy and dictatorship. But the most powerful technology of our time is completely unregulated and freely available to the people. Thousands of companies and hundreds of communities are using it and in turn making their developments available to the general public.

The latest is Model Context Protocol (MCP), which makes it possible to control any third-party programs, even highly complex ones such as Gimp, CAD, or Blender. @Enepe Kelas I have a good friend who lives in Moscow who tells me how good his life is there and he believes what he is saying. Just as your friend has a valid opinion. In my country a man was sent to prison for shouting at a police dog that was barking at him. 7 times as many people are sent to prison in the UK for what they write online compared to Russia. I was talking to Alexie about how we can pay for the tube with our phones and he said he simply looks at the screen. His view is honest and valid. It is certainly not worth the hatred and war. Russia really does have beautiful cities etc. and there people are far better at justifying their loyalty to it but there are also those who oppose and some of my Russian friends do not live in Russia although when they do return they are not as badly treated as the media would have you believe. I have one friend who was an artillery officer and ran away at the start of the war but eventually ran out of money (life is more expensive in the west) and returned. He was interviewed but not punished in any way. He was allowed to get a job in the private sector and get on with his life. Desert the army in my country and you are more likely to go to prison. One of my Russian friends in Germany had a much harder time because he went to a Navalny rally. I have reached a point where it is all 6 of one and half a dozen of another. I really do not see a big difference. I am happy here and I have friends who are happy there. Great. We bomb far more countries but scream and shout when Russia does the same (far less often). I do think they have done wrong but I can also see that so have we. We can argue the nuts and bolts and try and score logic points but it is still 6 of one and half a dozen of another. We should be talking more with each other. I do not see them as free politically but I do not see us as free politically. In Russia people are pro or anti Putin, in the US people are pro or anti Trump, in the UK people are pro or anti Starmer.

Personally, I would not emphasize aesthetics or the magnificence and cleanliness of cities as an evaluation of the quality of life. Even Hitler's projected new vision of Berlin had many grand aesthetic qualities in terms of urban design, and he certainly planned for it to be a clean city.
The question is not what happens to a person if they are loyal, but the question is how the boundaries (boundaries) of that loyalty are set - and how much room those boundaries leave for individual autonomy.
I certainly can have no illusions about freedom in Western society, but unfortunately, from many indications, I can't have them about society in the current Russian Federation either.
