I have three teenage daughters who are currently not allowed on social media. But I want to give them some ability before they become adults. My eldest gave me a PowerPoint presentation on why she should be allowed on Snapchat, lol.
She made some good points. Her friend group has a group text and she wants to keep up with everyone but doesn’t want to get the ding notifications constantly.
Feels like a good opportunity for a Fediverse platform. Like a closed Mastodon/Pixelfed server and have some parental controls. Any projects out there?
There are more and more kids who aren’t allowed on social media because of its multifarious harms. Don’t forget that 20 years ago, no kids had social media. By all accounts, kids were doing fine back then. Also, OP said that her eldest daughter, at least, has a friend group, so your concern about their social isolation is probably misplaced.
We've had discussions about this, with and without our kids. Yeah, they need to be in the loop with their friends, and being in that loop can mean being exposed to some bullshit.
That's always been the case, though. The additional risk of modern social media, I think, is that it's always with you. One of the rules we laid down was to plug your phone in outside your room before you go to bed. That was relatively strongly enforced when they were younger, just getting started in that arena. They're all essentially adults now, so we don't enforce it anymore, but they sometimes still do it anyway.
It's important to be connected, and it's okay to be disconnected when you want to be.

Sorry, just some small note. Charging to 100% daily significantly shortens the battery lifespan. Staying between 20 - 80% is generally recommended. But to be honest, if I still had a phone with user replaceable battery I'd just 100% it too. I mean, the battery for my Galaxy Ace is like €6.
Anyway, I've got some USB tester from AliExpress that also has a time limit. I can usually nail that near 80%. There's also some physical Bluetooth charge limiters, though that of course requires their app.

It's pretty clear that OP's daughter does feel like she's missing out on things her friends are doing, that's why she is asking. Social isolation doesn't have to be total to be damaging to your mental health, especially if you're an extrovert.
And bringing up "but in my time..." Yeah, no. Not a comparable situation. If everyone is on social media and you're not, you're going to be left out of at least some things, there's just no way around it.
I'm not a parent (and I'm glad I don't have to think about this problem myself). However, I've worked at a company that specialised in filtering internet services with many parents using it to protect their kids. I've also talked to plenty of people whose parents used to deny them whatever app the kids were on at the time. I can tell you that many kids will install apps and create accounts eventually, whether you permit them or not. I've seen the ingenious workarounds kids will come up with (using the browser app built into Windows Help to get around parental controls, combining web proxies and VPNs into an unholy homebrew Tor, or just using a burner phone outside the house), and while I appreciate the hacker culture that can develop around hiding apps from your parents, I don't think it'll be good for the relationship between you and your kids if you're too strict about this stuff.
Snapchat is popular because other kids are on there. It's mostly a stupid looking chat app. Every other chat app out there has cloned its most important features. Your kids won't be missing out on anything on there, except for the network of friends and social activities that are there. That means you won't find a Fediverse app like that, because most teenagers aren't on the Fediverse. The other kids aren't going to replace Snapchat with an app just to chat with your kids, especially not if it sends a copy of their conversations to their parents. Best case scenario, they install the app and share most of the stuff your kids are missing out on on the special server you set up so your kids don't miss too much.
As for the point your daughter made, notifications can be silenced. If your kids are worried about phone addiction or getting interrupted by notifications, help them with whatever digital wellness tools their devices come with. Every major OS, desktop and mobile, now comes with tools to limit notifications during focus time, bed time, and the ability to silence notifications for certain chats or events. I find it hard to believe that Snapchat would solve that problem and feel like it's more likely she's using an unrelated valid concern to help her case for your permission to use Snapchat.
I don't know how old your daughters are and what guidance they need, but if they're creating PowerPoints to get their desires across (bravo), I think they'd be better served with guidance than with alternatives. Instead of rejecting them, consider permitting apps like Snapchat under certain conditions (time limits, no publicly posting pictures, no strangers, etc.). It's probably also best to make the rules are clear and consistent (which means not taking away Snapchat time as punishment for arbitrary things), because that kind of stuff can cause trust issues that will still have them go behind your back. For this to work, they need to trust that you will honour the "deal". I'm not saying you should let 12 year olds go ham on social media, but letting 16 year olds on Snapchat an hour a day isn't going to kill them.
The biggest risk with these things is that kids will find a way to install these apps without you noticing, something bad happens (their online friend turns out to be a grown man, a classmate starts sending weird messages), and they're afraid of talking to you about it because they might get in trouble for having a banned app on their phone.
The minimum age for Snapchat is 13. The direct mesaaging part of it allows for fun and harmless messages between friends. I think allowing her to use it if she's 13+ is reasonable.
What you could do is to ask her not to allow friend requests or messages from anyone who are not her friends, not to use the AI assistant (which can't be disabled), and to not use it to consume content from influencers (which is in a separate tab to the right). You cannot really police this, but it's not the end of the world if she sees the feed of some dumb influencer.
Position data must of course also be disabled. Snapchat is a bit creepy.
The fediverse is always (somewhat) public. Getting together with other parents to set up a Pixelfed instance to use in the friend group rather than to have them use Instagram is a cool idea, and allows parents to be admins and decide who can federate without taking control of the accounts of the kids. It might be a nice way for them to learn that whatever they do online is run by some person whom they decide to trust. And it could keep them off Instagram a little longer.
I don't really know the first thing about parenting though, just my thoughts. It's a tricky question.

Just let the kis grow up normally like rest of us did. I feel like many of us, just like me, grew up with far more extreme/unmoderated sites like liveleak and 4chan. Heavily moderated social media is very mild to what some of us grew up with, and I'm no serial killer by any means, I only kill on tuesdays

Parmi ces nouveaux soutiens certains sont purement opportunistes – un positionnement électoral pour le congrès du PS, s’inquiéter du fait que le génocide pourrait finir par isoler Israël sur le plan international et nuire sur le long-terme à la légitimité du projet sioniste… D’autres sont sincères et tardifs, mais mieux vaux tard que jamais.
Toutefois, des indignations de circonstance n’aideront pas les Palestiniens. Israël, qui ne subit aucune sanction, se fiche royalement des opinions publiques européennes. Une des solutions des gouvernements occidentaux pour donner l’impression d’agir en ne faisant rien ou pas grand chose est “la reconnaissance de l’Etat de Palestine”. Si cette reconnaissance est évidemment souhaitable, elle est aussi essentiellement symbolique et peut se faire à peu de frais (quand bien même elle susciterait les protestations du gouvernement israélien).
On ne s’en rend pas toujours compte, mais la France et l’Union Européenne disposent de leviers de contraintes non négligeables.

Les Français sont d’ailleurs ultra majoritaires (74%) à souhaiter la mise en place de sanctions contre Israël. On l’a vu avec la Russie : les sanctions, bien qu’elles aient eu un fort effet sur l’économie russe, n’ont pas permis ni d’empêcher ni d’arrêter la guerre. La France seule ne peut pas arrêter le génocide – bien qu’Israël soit très dépendant du soutien du camp occidental – mais beaucoup de mesures seraient déjà un pas décisif et permettraient de sauver beaucoup de vies palestiniennes.
Voilà concrètement ce que l’on pourrait être en droit d’attendre d’une action résolue pour contraindre Israël.

Le gel des avoirs est une mesure juridique et financière qui consiste à interdire l’accès ou l’utilisation des fonds et ressources économiques d’une personne, d’un groupe ou d’une entreprise. Concrètement, la personne ou l’entité ne peut plus retirer d’argent, faire de virements, vendre ses biens, ou accéder à ses comptes bancaires, et ses avoirs (argent en banque, actions, biens immobiliers ou mobiliers, etc.) deviennent inaccessibles. Une fois la décision prise, les banques et institutions financières sont légalement tenues de bloquer les avoirs des personnes concernées et de signaler toute tentative de mouvement de fonds.
Le gel des avoirs est une mesure juridique et financière qui consiste à interdire l’accès ou l’utilisation des fonds et ressources économiques d’une personne, d’un groupe ou d’une entreprise.
Il s’agirait donc ici de geler les avoirs du Premier ministre Benjamin Netanyahu, de ses ministres, de ses généraux, des chefs du Shin Bet et du Mossad (les services de renseignement israéliens), de même que pour les personnalités médiatiques et économiques soutenant les opérations militaires ou la colonisation.
Ce gel des avoirs pourrait s’accompagner de restrictions de visas (décision qui peut être prise par un arrêté ministériel, un décret ou une décision européenne) : ces personnes ne pourraient pas obtenir de visa pour entrer en France ou dans l’Union européenne en général, et les visas en cours seraient annulés. Les éventuels permis de séjour et titres de résidence seraient retirés. Ces personnes ne pourraient plus non plus transiter par les aéroports ou ports de France. Il s’agirait d’une sanction diplomatique majeure avec un impact direct sur les entreprises israéliennes et des réactions en chaîne sur les marchés financiers israéliens. Elle pourrait pousser d’autres Etats à envisager des sanctions similaires. Les entreprises françaises et européennes seraient incitées à réévaluer leurs relations avec Israël.
Ce gel des avoirs pourrait s’accompagner de restrictions de visas : ces personnes ne pourraient pas obtenir de visa pour entrer en France ou dans l’Union européenne en général, et les visas en cours seraient annulés.
Les avoirs de la Banque d’Israël pourraient eux aussi être gelés. La Banque d’Israël possède des réserves en devises étrangères (dollars, euros, etc.) déposées dans des banques étrangères pour gérer la stabilité monétaire, intervenir sur les marchés financiers et garantir la confiance dans sa monnaie .Si ces avoirs étaient gelés, la Banque d’Israël ne pourrait plus accéder à ces fonds, les transférer ou les utiliser. Cela l’empêcherait d’intervenir normalement sur les marchés des changes ou d’utiliser ces réserves pour stabiliser sa monnaie ou payer des dettes à l’international. Cela pourrait déstabiliser la monnaie locale (le shekel) et affecter la confiance des marchés financiers dans l’économie israélienne. La France pourrait appliquer cette mesure unilatéralement, mais il faudrait surtout qu’elle pousse pour qu’il s’agisse d’une décision collective de l’UE.
Pousser pour exclure les banques israéliennes du système SWIFT
Dans le cadre des sanctions contre la Russie, plusieurs banques russes ont été exclues de SWIFT, ce qui a fortement limité leur capacité à faire du commerce international et à transférer des fonds. En effet, SWIFT est la plateforme principale utilisée par les banques dans le monde pour envoyer et recevoir des informations sur les paiements internationaux.
Lors des sanctions contre la Russie, plusieurs banques russes ont été exclues de SWIFT, ce qui a fortement limité leur capacité à faire du commerce international et à transférer des fonds.

Par exemple, si un client de Bank Leumi en Israël voudrait payer un fournisseur en France, la transaction ne pourrait pas passer par le système SWIFT. Les opérations transfrontalières (transferts d’argent, paiements, règlements) deviendraient extrêmement difficiles, lentes, voire impossibles.
Les conséquences économiques et financières pour Israël seraient extrêmement lourdes. Il y aurait un blocage des flux financiers internationaux des banques israéliennes. Les entreprises et particuliers utilisant ces banques auraient beaucoup de mal à faire des affaires à l’international (importations, exportations, investissements). Les partenaires commerciaux seraient incités à éviter de traiter avec ces banques car les paiements seraient très compliqués. Les déposants pourraient paniquer et retirer massivement leurs fonds, craignant une paralysie financière. D’une manière générale, la confiance dans le système bancaire israélien pourrait s’effondrer, risquant une crise bancaire majeure.
Exclure les banques israéliennes (Bank Leumi, Hapoalim…) du système SWIFT signifie concrètement qu’il serait impossible pour ces banques d’envoyer ou recevoir des instructions de paiement internationales via SWIFT.
SWIFT est une organisation internationale basée en Belgique qui gère le réseau mondial de messagerie interbancaire. La France seule ne peut donc pas exclure une banque du système SWIFT. Elle peut toutefois proposer et soutenir cette sanction dans le cadre de l’Union européenne.
Interdire le financement de la dette israélienne et les investissements européens dans des projets publics ou d’infrastructures
Pour avoir un impact significatif, il faudrait que ces décisions soient européennes.
Il serait interdit pour des acteurs européens (banques, fonds d’investissement, entreprises, États, etc.) de financer la dette publique israélienne, c’est-à-dire d’acheter des obligations d’État israéliennes (les titres de dette émis par Israël pour financer ses dépenses publiques). Cela empêcherait Israël de lever de l’argent sur les marchés financiers européens pour financer son budget, ses projets et ses opérations.
L’Europe est un acteur majeur des marchés financiers mondiaux et Israël y emprunte régulièrement.
Il serait également interdit pour les investisseurs européens de placer de l’argent dans des grands projets financés par le gouvernement israélien (routes, énergie, bâtiments publics, transports, etc.), ce qui limiterait les sources de financement extérieures pour ces projets.
Cette décision prise unilatéralement par la France aurait un impact économique faible mais serait symboliquement fort et pourrait inciter d’autres pays à faire de même. À l’échelle de l’Union européenne, en revanche, cela aurait un impact significatif car l’Europe est un acteur majeur des marchés financiers mondiaux et Israël y emprunte régulièrement.
Boycotter les produits et services israéliens
La France pourrait bloquer les exportations et importations, en particulier les composants sensibles (microprocesseurs, semi-conducteurs, capteurs), les logiciels militaires et de cybersécurité, les drones à usage civil et militaire, les produits israéliens issus des colonies (agriculture, artisanat, produits manufacturés), les diamants bruts et taillés, les technologies de surveillance, les fruits, les produits pharmaceutiques…
La France pourrait bloquer les exportations et importations.
Le marché français est important et certaines entreprises israéliennes perdraient un débouché. À l’échelle européenne, cette décision aurait davantage d’impact : Israël aurait des difficultés à se fournir en technologies essentielles pour son armée ou son industrie, ce qui pourrait ralentir ou compliquer certaines des opérations de massacre. L’économie des colonies serait touchée et certains secteurs agricoles et industriels seraient ralentis.

Via des autorités comme l’Arcom (régulateur des médias et de l’audiovisuel) ou la Cnil (protection des données), la France pourrait exercer une pression réglementaire sur les réseaux sociaux pour qu’ils suppriment les contenus et comptes diffusant de la désinformation pro-israélienne sur Gaza.

Pour cela, les fournisseurs d’accès à Internet comme Orange, Free, SFR, Bouygues seraient obligés de rendre ces sites inaccessibles depuis la France (via DNS, IP blocking, filtrage).
Faire pression sur les Etats commerçant avec Israël
La France pourrait faire pression diplomatiquement et économiquement notamment sur les Émirats arabes unis, l’Inde et les États-Unis. Pour ce faire, elle pourrait utiliser ses canaux diplomatiques (déclarations publiques, démarches auprès des ambassades, discussions bilatérales…) et plaider dans les différentes instances internationales (ONU, Union européenne, G7…) pour une réduction des échanges commerciaux avec Israël.
La France pourrait faire pression diplomatiquement et économiquement notamment sur les Émirats Arabes unis, l’Inde et les États-Unis.
Cela pourrait s’accompagner de sanctions contre des entreprises (Amazon, Microsoft, etc.) qui entretiennent des liens technologiques avec Israël.

Depuis 2022, la France a aidé l’Ukraine à hauteur de 15,7 milliards d’euros. Cela inclut une aide militaire d’environ 3,4 milliards d’euros cumulés, ce qui comprend des canons Caesar, des missiles, des munitions, des blindés, des formations, ce qui fait de notre pays le 15e contributeur mondial en aide militaire à l’Ukraine. L’aide financière a été de plusieurs milliards d’euros sous forme de prêts, de garanties et de contributions via les fonds européens. Ces montants sont infiniment supérieurs à ceux du soutien à la Palestine. Cet argent sert à financer des écoles, des dispensaires médicaux, la distribution de nourriture et d’eau potable et des aides d’urgence (abris, soins pour les blessés, etc.). En triplant cette aide, la France passerait à plus de 100 millions. Avec cette somme l’UNRWA pourrait rouvrir ou maintenir des services qui ferment faute de fonds, comme des hôpitaux de fortune ou des distributions alimentaires.
La contribution française au CICR (Comité international de la Croix-Rouge) pour Gaza est d’environ 5 millions d’euros par an, ce qui est très peu. En triplant ce montant, la France renforcerait les convois de secours, le soutien aux hôpitaux de terrain et les programmes de soins psychologiques.

La France a déjà mis en place ce type de mesures pour Gaza mais avec une ampleur bien moindre comparée aux opérations mises en place après l’explosion du port de Beyrouth en 2020. Ces efforts pourraient être largement intensifiés.
Promouvoir une mission internationale de protection des civils de l’ONU
La France pourrait demander aux Nations unies d’envoyer des forces et observateurs internationaux dans Gaza pour protéger directement les populations civiles en déposant ou co-parrainant une résolution demandant la création d’une mission de maintien de la paix et d’une force d’interposition.
Des casques bleus armés pourraient protéger les civils, sécuriser des corridors humanitaires, surveiller les cessez-le-feu, etc.
Dans les faits, cela serait difficile à obtenir car il faudrait que cette résolution soit votée par le Conseil de sécurité, sans veto des cinq membres permanents (États-Unis, Russie, Chine, Royaume-Uni, France) et il est probable que les Etats-Unis s’y opposent… Si toutefois cette mission était votée, des casques bleus armés pourraient protéger les civils, sécuriser des corridors humanitaires, surveiller les cessez-le-feu, etc. Des observateurs civils et des militaires non armés pourraient documenter les violations du droit international et jouer un rôle dissuasif. Des zones de sécurité humanitaires protégées pourraient être mises en place, permettant à des civils de se réfugier sous supervision internationale.

L’accueil de réfugiés palestiniens est lui resté très marginal. La France pourrait dans ce cas aussi activer une protection temporaire spécifique, avec des procédures simplifiées. Elle pourrait débloquer un budget dédié à l’hébergement et l’intégration (emploi, éducation, santé), faire des campagnes de sensibilisation et collaborer avec les ONG spécialisées
Soutenir réellement les enquêtes de la CPI sur les crimes de guerre israéliens
Contrairement à Israël et aux Etats-Unis, la France reconnaît la légitimité de la Cour pénale internationale (CPI) qui enquête sur les crimes israéliens en Palestine. En mai 2024, après que le procureur de la CPI a demandé des mandats d’arrêt contre des ministres israéliens, dont Netanyahou, la France a réaffirmé son soutien à la CPI.
Mais elle pourrait aller beaucoup plus loin en défendant l’indépendance de la Cour face aux sanctions et pressions des Etats-Unis et d’Israël, en fournissant aux enquêteurs de la CPI des images satellites, des témoignages, des notes des services de renseignement et en soutenant et en s’engageant à respecter les mandats d’arrêt contre les membres gouvernement israélien.
S’engager pour la reconstruction
À travers l’Agence française de développement (AFD), la France soutient des projets à Gaza dans les domaines de l’éducation, de la santé et du développement économique. Mais ces derniers sont très limités en ampleur et en nombre. La France pourrait investir de manière importante dans la reconstruction des infrastructures en particulier les hôpitaux, les logements et les systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau.

Le mouvement pro-palestien est parvenu à une petite avancée : nos adversaires utilisent maintenant parfois nos mots et font des déclarations symboliques de protestation contre le massacre. Mais ce n’est pas ce qui sauvera les Gazaouis. Face au génocide et à l’impunité dont bénéficie Israël, la France, et si possible en entraînant l’Union européenne, doit passer à des actions concrètes, comme l’ont fait d’autres pays (le Chili a rappelé son ambassadeur, la Colombie a suspendu ses ventes de charbon, le Royaume-Uni ses ventes d’armes…) . Les leviers existent et sont puissants. Ils sont des objectifs stratégiques concrets de revendication pour le mouvement pro-palestinien : suspendre la coopération militaire, geler les avoirs de tous les responsables, propagandistes et soutiens du régime israéliens, exclure leurs banques du système financier international, interdire le financement de leur dette, boycotter les produits israéliens, fermer les chaînes de propagande, tripler l’aide humanitaire pour Gaza et poursuivre la mise en place de ponts maritimes et aériens, défendre à l’ONU la mise en place d’une mission internationale de protection des civils, évacuer des blessés vers la France et accueillir des réfugiés palestiniens, appuyer la Cour pénale internationale, s’engager pour la reconstruction… autant de mesures capables d’exercer une pression réelle afin de contraindre Israël. C’est le strict minimum que l’on est en droit d’exiger lorsque l’on parle du massacre de dizaines de milliers d’enfants innocents, d’une famine organisée, de l’extermination programmée et méthodique de tout un peuple.

The Sirius 16 is decidedly aimed at Linux gaming or workstation use cases. Its 16.1 inches with a 2K resolution of 2560x1440, so it's 16:9, better for gaming IMO than 16:10, but less good for other tasks.
It has a full aluminium chassis, an 80Wh battery, it can accomodate up to 96 gigs of RAM, 8 terabytes of PCIe 4 SSD, and it comes with USB 4, the latest HDMI 2.1 and Wifi 6E. But what matters is what's inside, and that's a ryzen 7 7840HS, and a radeon 7600M XT, with 8 gigs of DDR6 VRAM. The aluminium chassis really feels solid, and the whole laptop is pretty hefty, at 2.2 kilos, or 4.8 pounds.
The CPU is a ryzen 7 7840HS, it's 8 cores, 16 threads, running at a top speed of 5.1Ghz. In geekbench 6, it got 2640 in single core, and 12635 in multi core, so it's more powerful than the i7 13700H I use daily on my own laptop.

In terms of gaming, I ran the benchmark for horizon zero dawn. At the native resolution and max settings, the game got 77 FPS, perfectly playable with a very nice looking experience. Lowering that 1080p and using FSR on the quality setting, still at the max settings, I got 116 FPS. And at high details, 1080p with FSR on the quality settings, you reach 118 FPS, so you’ll be able to make use of that displays high refresh rate!
And all of this runs in hybrid graphics mode by default, at least on the preinstalled Tuxedo OS my review unit came with.
The laptop, running at half brightness with wifi on, playing videos in a loop, lasted for 6 hours.
On the left side, you have a USB 1 3.2 Gen 2 port, a headphone jack, and a separate mic jack. On the right, you have a fingerprint reader, which unfortunately, doesn't support Linux.
You also get a USB C port, 4.0 Gen 3x2, it supports power delivery and displayport 1.4, and it's hardwired to the integrated GPU, and on the right, you also have another USB A 3.2 Gen2.
On the back, you get a barrel charger, a gigabit ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 port that supports freesync and is hardwired to the dedicated GPU, and a USB C 3.2 Gen 2x1 port, that supports display port, freesync, and is hardwired to the dedicated GPU as well.
The display can run up to 165hz, but can go down to 120, 96, 72 or 69hz. Viewing angles are perfect, and it covers 100% of sRGB, with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. it's 300 nits of brightness which isn't bad but it isn't the birghtest ever, and it supports AMD Freesync. It's 2K, so 2560 by 1440p.
The keyboard is a rubber membrane affair, that feels really good to type on. it's quiet, key travel is ok the keys don't get stuck they're stable, so you can press from a corner and activate them, and you get a numpad which is a personel preference. You also get a tux branded key, full size arrow keys that are slightly off compared to the rest of the keyboard, which I hated at first, but kinda like now, because it makes them really easy to find. They keyboard is RGB backlit, you can control that in the tuxedo control center, to change the color and the brightness to anything you like, or you can press function + space bar to turn it on or off.
The touchpad is really smooth and sturdy, it's big enough, it's really off center though, which some people like, but I don't, I like things centered. It produces a very reassuring solid click, it doesn't rattle at all, it's really nice, and works with gestures as well.
The Sirius 16 comes with 4 speakers, which sound really nice. The mic is nothing to write home about, it's ok for small chats. As per the webcam, it goes up to 1080p 30, which isn't bad, and it doesn't yield horrible results at all.

Seriously, though. I don’t know how you one-up the first game. I’ve been replaying it and I’m just constantly in awe at the number of hidden little gems to go explore.
I just found out the text messages you get from Club Riot are for actual events in world and not just flavor text. I haven’t dug into it, but it almost sounded like they had multiple sets of music for the different artists. Just so many little details.
If CDPR hadn't forced the team to crunch to get the game running at all on PlayStation, it probably would have been much more polished on release. A lot of the bugs you see in YouTube glitch compilations were due to this over-optimization (like NPCs vanishing or changing models when you looked away for a second).
I wonder how much better the game and its reception would have been if they'd dropped the last-gen console support during development. Those were the truly awful versions; the PC version was about even with Bethesda's launch day jank.
I also wish they'd properly managed expectations. The PC release was buggy and missing promised features, yes, but a lot of the hate came from it being a game with an open-world city with guns and driving but not mimicking GTA's systems.

Could you remind me what features people were upset about? I stayed away from most of the drama since CDPR has a long history of releasing a free major upgrade a year or two after release that fixes everything people complained about.

what? It's not like everyone needs to run jeyfin at home. the oy thing you need to use is the jeyfin webapp, which I don't understand how is it more complicated than netflix or any other similar service. you log in, pick a movie and hit play. that's it.
I don't mean to diminish your comment, but I just went through the setup process for both Plex and jellyfin (moving to new hardware) and there was no significant difference between the setups.
Maybe this wasn't the case a few years ago, but jellyfin is just a setup, point to libraries, and enable hardware accel.

I'm not lying, I can show you my Fw config. My son called me yesterday saying he couldn't watch Plex, something about the Plex pass. I just changed the Fw rule DST nat mangle port and told him to use jellyfin. The user is local, so that's dead easy. Done in 10 minutes.
And yes, most users don't have this kind of experience, granted. But Plex comes with its own stupidities, like in 2020 when my wife had to pay $5 for the Plex app so she could access our library. Or the exercise of sharing libraries if you don't have a Plex pass, which is a real pain.
But that wasn't my point. I was trying to relay that jellyfin isn't as buggy and difficult as a lot of self hosters claim.
My Jellyfin tunnels via traefik and cloudflared. However, the normal Android app somehow can't login, but streamyfin works like a charm. I always had issues with plex, because it relied on their own service. But jellyfin now simply works, pretty nifty
Jellyfin is basically as easy to use as plex within the same network. I’ve set up both dueing the past 6 months. The only big difference is that Jellyfin is much more of a pain to work through port forwarding.
Jellyfin is hardly a no-brainer. I set it up out of curiosity a few weeks ago and my first question was how do I give access to my friends and family. So I searched, and all of the results were talking about setting up a VPN or a reverse proxy or whatever. Man, I just want to tell my mom "install this app on your tv and log in", which is exactly what Plex does.
I get that Plex is enshittifying, but pretending Jellyfin is a drop-in replacement is delusional.

That's always been the case, though. The additional risk of modern social media, I think, is that it's always with you. One of the rules we laid down was to plug your phone in outside your room before you go to bed. That was relatively strongly enforced when they were younger, just getting started in that arena. They're all essentially adults now, so we don't enforce it anymore, but they sometimes still do it anyway.
It's important to be connected, and it's okay to be disconnected when you want to be.

Sorry, just some small note. Charging to 100% daily significantly shortens the battery lifespan. Staying between 20 - 80% is generally recommended.
But to be honest, if I still had a phone with user replaceable battery I'd just 100% it too. I mean, the battery for my Galaxy Ace is like €6.
Anyway, I've got some USB tester from AliExpress that also has a time limit. I can usually nail that near 80%. There's also some physical Bluetooth charge limiters, though that of course requires their app.
Irrelevant if your phone has built-in charge limiter.
But yeah, anyway, how you did it sounds fine.
Edit: Although theoretically, it probably could be done without an app. Bluetooth can share battery charge info.

And bringing up "but in my time..." Yeah, no. Not a comparable situation. If everyone is on social media and you're not, you're going to be left out of at least some things, there's just no way around it.

However, I've worked at a company that specialised in filtering internet services with many parents using it to protect their kids. I've also talked to plenty of people whose parents used to deny them whatever app the kids were on at the time. I can tell you that many kids will install apps and create accounts eventually, whether you permit them or not. I've seen the ingenious workarounds kids will come up with (using the browser app built into Windows Help to get around parental controls, combining web proxies and VPNs into an unholy homebrew Tor, or just using a burner phone outside the house), and while I appreciate the hacker culture that can develop around hiding apps from your parents, I don't think it'll be good for the relationship between you and your kids if you're too strict about this stuff.
Snapchat is popular because other kids are on there. It's mostly a stupid looking chat app. Every other chat app out there has cloned its most important features. Your kids won't be missing out on anything on there, except for the network of friends and social activities that are there. That means you won't find a Fediverse app like that, because most teenagers aren't on the Fediverse. The other kids aren't going to replace Snapchat with an app just to chat with your kids, especially not if it sends a copy of their conversations to their parents. Best case scenario, they install the app and share most of the stuff your kids are missing out on on the special server you set up so your kids don't miss too much.
As for the point your daughter made, notifications can be silenced. If your kids are worried about phone addiction or getting interrupted by notifications, help them with whatever digital wellness tools their devices come with. Every major OS, desktop and mobile, now comes with tools to limit notifications during focus time, bed time, and the ability to silence notifications for certain chats or events. I find it hard to believe that Snapchat would solve that problem and feel like it's more likely she's using an unrelated valid concern to help her case for your permission to use Snapchat.
I don't know how old your daughters are and what guidance they need, but if they're creating PowerPoints to get their desires across (bravo), I think they'd be better served with guidance than with alternatives. Instead of rejecting them, consider permitting apps like Snapchat under certain conditions (time limits, no publicly posting pictures, no strangers, etc.). It's probably also best to make the rules are clear and consistent (which means not taking away Snapchat time as punishment for arbitrary things), because that kind of stuff can cause trust issues that will still have them go behind your back. For this to work, they need to trust that you will honour the "deal". I'm not saying you should let 12 year olds go ham on social media, but letting 16 year olds on Snapchat an hour a day isn't going to kill them.
The biggest risk with these things is that kids will find a way to install these apps without you noticing, something bad happens (their online friend turns out to be a grown man, a classmate starts sending weird messages), and they're afraid of talking to you about it because they might get in trouble for having a banned app on their phone.

The minimum age for Snapchat is 13. The direct mesaaging part of it allows for fun and harmless messages between friends. I think allowing her to use it if she's 13+ is reasonable.
What you could do is to ask her not to allow friend requests or messages from anyone who are not her friends, not to use the AI assistant (which can't be disabled), and to not use it to consume content from influencers (which is in a separate tab to the right). You cannot really police this, but it's not the end of the world if she sees the feed of some dumb influencer.
Position data must of course also be disabled. Snapchat is a bit creepy.
The fediverse is always (somewhat) public. Getting together with other parents to set up a Pixelfed instance to use in the friend group rather than to have them use Instagram is a cool idea, and allows parents to be admins and decide who can federate without taking control of the accounts of the kids. It might be a nice way for them to learn that whatever they do online is run by some person whom they decide to trust. And it could keep them off Instagram a little longer.
I don't really know the first thing about parenting though, just my thoughts. It's a tricky question.

Just let the kis grow up normally like rest of us did. I feel like many of us, just like me, grew up with far more extreme/unmoderated sites like liveleak and 4chan. Heavily moderated social media is very mild to what some of us grew up with, and I'm no serial killer by any means, I only kill on tuesdays

You’re not going to create a perfect adult free from social media use. You’re going to create an adult who doesn’t want to know you because you’re a control freak.
