"I have nothing to hide, so I don't see why I should care about privacy".

First, are you sure you have nothing to hide?
Unless you're the most upstanding citizen who never absolutely never did anything that could be held against them, you DO have something to hide, whether you realize it or not.

Then there are things that aren't problematic for you NOW, but could become an issue in the future.

Look at how many people got flamed online for tweets or posts dating from 10 years ago. Or just look at how law evolves: you might be lucky enough to live in a country that's quite tolerant to every gender, sex, sexual orientation, skin color, religious or political views. For now. But as recent news clearly demonstrated , that's not necessarily something that's set in stone.

And finally, there's the hacking risk.

The second misconception you often hear is "privacy is already dead, don't bother, it's impossible to stay private nowadays

If you look online, you'll find a TON of ideas, guides, and videos that do just that: tell you what is private and what isn't. Privacy respecting alternatives are EVERYWHERE.

Privacy isn't dead, it's never been so alive!

The next misconception is one that's harder to dispel: "They give me great services for free, so I think the tradeoff is worth it""

If you think your privacy doesn't matter, I think you're wrong, but you are entitled to your opinion and you have every right to consider your data a good deal in exchange for free online services.

But let's consider this for a moment. First, the services aren't free. The price for these services is your data. And another thing to consider: you could get great services elsewhere, that do the same thing, would take you a few days to learn, and can also be free of charge.

"The cloud is just someone else's computer"

Of course, if you store your files on a company's server, then yes, they're stored on a computer that doesn't belong to you. That's actually true. But there's a huge gap between storing these files on a datacenter, and people in that datacenter being able to access everything.

While Google, Microsoft, or Apple might parse everything that gets into their servers, that doesn't mean it's true of every company. A lot of companies offer end to end encryption, which means that your data leaves your computer encrypted, and arrives on the server in the same form, never being legible by anyone in the process. Or you can have your own cloud stored on your own computer.

Which program is the one that surprised you most that it is available on Linux?
For me, it was perhaps simple-scan, a very simple and efficient GUI to scan documents. I used it with my Brother printer / scanner and it works like a charm. Especially since I do not scan stuff often, so a program with more complex UI would have the effect that I forget how to use it until the next time.

Let's begin with the GNU General Public License. The original GPL was created by Richard Stallman in 1989. It's what we call a copyleft license: all modifications made have to be redistributed under the same terms.

The GPL generally gives you the right to download and use, modify, and redistribute the code using the license, without any restrictions.

A lot of projects use the GPL, like the Linux kernel, most GNU software, Wordpress, Notepad++, or Git. Also, any project under the GPL can be sold, by the original creator, or anyone else, whether they modified the code or not, but the person who bought that software has every right to redistribute the code for free themselves.

Another much used license is the MIT license, with about 31% of FOSS projects using it in 2021. It's been created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, and it's also a free software license, that grants you the rights to copy, modify, merge, or distribute the code.

It's a very permissive license, much more flexible than the GPL, as it doesn't restrict what you can do with the code you're using, there is no copyleft or copyright included, so you can include code licensed under the MIT license in your proprietary software, and not redistribute your changes

The MIT license is used in some form or another by a LOT of projects, like the X11 display server, .Net Core, Angular, React, Node.js or jQuery.

On to the Apache license, also used a lot, by 14% of FOSS projects in 2021.

The Apache license is some form of middle ground between the GPL and the MIT license. It grants you all the free software freedoms of downloading, using, modifying, distributing, and selling software using the license, whether it's for personal, internal or commercial use.

The Apache license isn't a copyleft license like the GPL, which means your modifications don't have to use the Apache License, BUT the original work must still be published under the Apache license, and every modification has to be labeled clearly.

The Apache license is used by Android, the Apache HTTP server, Kubernetes, or the Open 3D Engine.

Then we have the BSD License. It was created by the Berkeley Source Distribution project, known as BSD, originally in 1969. There are multiple variants, but most grant the same freedoms to download, use, modify, redistribute the software, as long as the copyright notice and license are included.

The BSD license doesn't force any modification to be distributed under the terms of the BSD license.

But licences don't only apply to code. You can also license your creative work, like a book, a video, a drawing, any form of photo, or art, basically anything you create can be covered by a license. And one of the most well known and used is the Creative Commons.

There are 6 types of that license:

First, you have the basic "Attribution".
Then you have the Share Alike license, the Non derivative license, the Non Commercial license, the Non commercial Share Alike, and the Non Commercial, share alike, non derivative license.

You're just some random author whose post I saw and happen to disagree with completely. Keep up with the times. AI is the future, like it or not. Yes, human narration is superior, and I'll always take it if I can get it, but I won't turn my nose up at an AI-generated audio book. If these people supposedly care about sustaining themselves and making a living, they'd find a way for up-and-coming authors to hire them. I do have a major problem with AI being used in certain things, such as music that's actually for sale...Nothing wrong with using AI platforms to create tunes, share them among friends, and play them. But AI of artists who are dead or can no longer sing, I can't get behind. Even the Randy Travis thing, which did get his blessing, was weird to me. But again, we don't get to decide who uses AI and what they use it for. That's where you come off as a presumptuous, egotistical ass not to be taken seriously...Acting as if you're some authority on the subject and as if your opinion should be taken as gospel from the world at large.

On the 3rd of May 2025, at 5 am in the morning, Snizana Paraskevaidou lost her life because of the premature detonation of an explosive device she was placing outside a branch of the National Bank of Greece in Thessaloniki. The tragic death of this comrade lead to a widespread media terror-lust and so far, two arrests and the search of the cell of imprisoned anarchist comrade Fotis Tziotzis. We recognise and remember Snizana as a fighter and a heroine who died in battle, whose name and life is not forgotten.

In the underbelly of Thessaloniki, life is a brutal struggle. It was for Snizana who came from a Georgian background that emanated from the working-class districts of the city, that emanates the everyday war that we all face there, to climb out of the poverty of the streets. She had the courage to make the fear change sides against the state, against the cops and the wealthy.

Our memories of her are of a female comrade with strength who we met when she was supporting the comrades in courts and in prisons or the moments on the barricades where she emboldened all of us. She was there in Exarcheia rioting until we dropped exhausted in countless battles over a decade. One moment we will always remember is her alongside us all armed to the teeth on the roof of the Thessaloniki university for another 6th December.

It was no surprise to us when she was imprisoned for possession of a kalashnikov. She knew how to do the essential, how to take the brutality of life and weaponise it. She had the ability to see with open eyes, and she always had time for others, she always cared for fellow comrades. Snizana always had an ear for the next moment of attack, which was directed by her rage against this existent system. An insumountable rage that never compromises, that never snitches, that goes face-to-face with authority with a dagger gripped in the teeth. Even if she fell in the act, she will live on in us.

We didn’t see her for some years. We parted two ways on those streets where we met but we will never let her be forgotten because the insurrection continues. She has inspired us with the same rage to continue it.

For the immediate attack against capitalism, the state and all forms of domination.
