The device I'll be using is a review unit of the Tuxedo Infinity Flex.
It's a 14 inch device, with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it's entirely foldable.

The laptop is powered by an Intel core i5 1335U, so 10 cores, 4.6Ghz.

Because this thing weighs 1.5kilos. The touchscreen is a non glare 14 inch, 1920x1200 display. It's 400 nits, so decently bright, and supports 100% of SRGB.

As per the battery life, you can expect about 6h of video playback on that 55Wh battery.

In terms of build quality, the thing is very solid, mostly aluminium, with rigid hinges, that once set, simply don't move.

The laptop part of it is also really good, the touchpad is smooth, doesn't rattle in place, and the click is firm and nice. The keyboard has good key travel, solidly sized keys, and it doesn't make a huge amount of noise either.
The webcam and mic are, as usual, pretty bad, they're laptop mics and cameras, they just aren't suitable for anything other than basic video conferencing.

The speakers are decent, they get loud enough, and while they don't have a lot of bass they don't distort unless you're listening to something really high pitched at max volume

Let's conclude on the I/O, here you get a barrel charger plug, HDMI 2.0, one USB A 3.2 gen 2, a thunderbolt 4 port, and a USB C 3.2 gen 2 port. Those last 2 do display port 1.4 and power delivery so you don't NEED the barrel charger, USB C works fine.
On the other side, you have a webcam and mic privacy switch, the power button, next to a 2 in 1 card reader for micro SD or a SIM Card, a USB C 3.2 gen 1, and a 2 in 1 headphone jack.

The Plasma experience on a touchscreen is actually really, really good. The desktop automatically scales itself with bigger padding, bigger icons, more spacing in most KDE / Qt apps, the system tray icons also get bigger and easier to hit, and window buttons also get larger

I could drag windows to a screen edge or to the top, and they'd resize, I could grab a corner of a window to resize it, I could long press a folder in the file manager to get advanced options, I could long press on the desktop to customize it, I could even pinch to zoom inside the file manager or in the image viewer to zoom in and out, although it wasn't free form zoom, so not super smooth everywhere.

Only adding widgets to the desktop was not really doable, as I couldn't scroll the widget list, it instead started a drag and drop operation of whatever widget my finger caught.

The onscreen keyboard that's preinstalled here is called maliit, and it works, it has language switching, an emoji board, and it automatically pops up when you're in touch mode, if any app has a text field pre selected, or when you touch a text field yourself.

KDE plasma even works with the same gestures you have on touchpads, so 3 fingers up shows the desktop grid, 3 fingers sliding down show all virtual desktops and the window spread. 3 fingers left or right also switches between virtual desktops if you have multiple ones.

GNOME is on the surface, well suited to touchscreens. Everything is already well padded and easy to touch, and generally, it works fine. It does ask you to double click a lot more than KDE.

You can still use gestures here, 3 fingers to bring the activity view, 3 fingers from there for the app grid, or 3 fingers left and right to switch desktops. Pinch to zoom works better in the image viewer than in KDE, but it doesn't work in the file manager.

You can't drag a window to the top or side of the screen to tile it. You can't swipe anywhere in the app grid, you have to aim between app icons.

The onscreen keyboard is fine, and works well, but doesn't appear for KDE / Qt apps, only for GTK apps.

Generally, inside of GTK / GNOME apps, things work ok, you can scroll, tap, change settings, open menus, move windows around, but the functionality is still more limited than inside of KDE in my experience.

I did encounter an issue where sometimes, nothing is touchable inside of a GNOME apps, nothing works. It's infrequent, and not easily reproducible, but it happens, and it basically makes the entire desktop unusable until the app in question crashes.

Sometimes it seems like most of these AI articles are written by AIs with bad prompts.

Human journalists would hopefully do a little research. A quick search would reveal that researches have been publishing about this for over a year so there's no need to sensationalize it. Perhaps the human journalist could have spent a little time talking about why LLMs are bad at chess and how researchers are approaching the problem.

LLMs on the other hand, are very good at producing clickbait articles with low information content.

SAAT acupuncture treatment seems to be working well for lots of people with AGS. (Though not for me, unfortunately.). It’s actually pretty much the only allopathic or alternative treatment that seems to help so far.

The "middle of the road" answer, being "I understand how things wok, but I'm no expert" gathered 40% of answers, and only 10% of answers in total described themselves as what I'd call beginners, with 9% saying they had a lot to learn, and 1% saying it was a brand new world.

So, what is difficult to accomplish on Linux? What seems to be the most annoying thing to deal with is integrating Linux systems with other devices, 36% of people picked this as a pain point.

The second big pain point is "using existing hardware", 28% of people picked this as a problem, and finding compatible hardware was a problem for 24% of people.

Interestingly, installing Linux was not picked as a pain point, only 4% of people said it was a problem.

Most people who answered have experiences hardware issues on Linux. 44% said they had a problem they could fix, and 36% said they had an issue they couldn't solve.

In terms of the main problematic components, there were a few surprises here. First are GPUs: 34% of people said they had trouble with their GPU.

Also a surprise: gaming controllers and peripherals: 9% of people who answered said they had troubles here. Wifi and Bluetooth at 17% each are sort of surprising to me as well, I thought this was a thing of the past, but apparently not.

Now, as per software related problems, here again, Linux has issues. 48% of people who answered said they faced a software problem they could fix, and 35% said they faced one they couldn't solve. Only 14% said they didn't face any software related problems.

As per the problematic categories, the biggest offender is sleep / wake and suspend, 30% of answers pointed that as a problem. App compatibility is also a big issue, 29% of people said Linux wasn't a supported platform for the software they needed to use.
Gaming is a sore spot, with 27% of people answering they're facing problems there.

So, 37% of people who answered said they could do most of what they wanted, but not everything. 33% said they could do everything, but some things were harder than on other platforms.
26% said they could do everything they wanted on Linux, and only 4% in total said many or most things they needed to do weren't possible on Linux.

As per the general experience of using Linux, most people seem to feel their system is very reliable: 56% said they have a few issues that don't impact their trust in their OS, 38% said they didn't worry about stability at all, and only 6% in total said they had frequent issues that make them lose trust in Linux as their OS.

71% of people who answered also said their experience with Linux was very good, better than other operating systems, and 6% said it was perfect without issues.
16% said it was good, and on par with other operating systems, and 6% in total said their experience was bad or very bad, as in worse than other OSes to downright unusable.

Most people also felt they absolutely needed the command line to fix problems on their systems. 50% said they had to use it a bit, and 28% said it was mandatory to get a usable system. Only 23% said they didn't need to use the command line at all.

Moi qui suis un sale bo-bo élitiste je n'ai jamais foutu les pieds dans ce magasin de merde (pourtant il y en a un a 1 km de chez moi).

Alors que l’impératif de sobriété s’impose dans le débat public, le succès fulgurant de l’enseigne maxidiscompte Action révèle l’attrait persistant d’un consumérisme accessible et ludique. Portée par une norme décorative aujourd’hui partagée et une quête de conformité sociale, cette consommation interroge les limites des discours écologiques.

Face à la crise climatique, les professionnels du marché rivalisent d’ingéniosité pour élaborer un discours, une offre, des dispositifs socio-techniques prétendument adaptés à l’impératif climatique. Il s’agit toujours de consommer mais de manière « responsable », une rhétorique marchande qui gratifie l’individu d’un nouveau signe d’appartenance de classe.

Ce discours est soutenu depuis plusieurs décennies par la mise en place ou le retour d’un appareil commercial adapté, composé d’enseignes spécialisées, de marchés paysans, de ventes à la ferme, de casiers fermiers. Il s’accompagne enfin de dispositifs qui, après le chariot et le sac plastique de l’accumulation quasi-illimitée, engendrent le « plein responsable », allant du bocal en verre pour le vrac au tote-bag en coton bio dont chacun d’entre-nous accumule aujourd’hui les exemplaires en songeant à leur hypothétique réemploi.

À contre-courant de cette nouvelle doxa, des enseignes ont depuis une dizaine d’années fait une apparition fracassante dans le paysage commercial en se dédouanant de tout engagement en matière de la transition écologique. Le développement et le succès spectaculaires d’enseignes non-alimentaires maxidiscomptes, en premier lieu desquelles Action, stimulent l’accumulation matérielle et révèlent l’écart entre le préoccupations environnementales et les pratiques effectives. Pour le dire autrement, la sobriété consommatoire, imposée par la crise climatique, n’a pas trouvé de meilleur ennemi que ces néo-bazars.

Quelques chiffres suffisent à illustrer leur conquête du territoire et des clients hexagonaux. Fondée aux Pays-Bas en 1993, Action ouvre une première succursale en France en 2012. Douze ans plus tard, elle y compte 859 points de vente et environ 20 000 salariés. À l’échelle internationale, l’enseigne compte 2918 points de vente dans 12 pays et totalise 80 000 salariés. Dans l’Hexagone, son chiffre d’affaires dépasse les 3 milliards d’euros au début de l’année 2023. La marque devient, dès 2023, l’enseigne préférée des Français en 2023 selon le baromètre EY-Parthenon, détrônant le géant de l’e-commerce Amazon et les français Décathlon et Leroy-Merlin.

En privilégiant une analyse à hauteur des rayons et des achats, nous souhaiterions examiner quelques principes du modèle « Action » et décrypter les usages sociaux qui sont faits de l’enseigne par des consommateurs toujours plus nombreux et socialement plus diversifiés[1]. Au-delà de sa politique de prix bas, qui n’a rien de révolutionnaire[2], et du renouvellement hebdomadaire d’une offre importée d’Asie et issue du déstockage d’entreprises en faillite, d’autres propriétés retiennent l’attention parmi lesquels l’intense communication numérique prise en charge par des clientes hyperconnectées. En scrutant la diffusion de la « norme décorative », il s’agit également d’identifier quelques-unes des logiques sociales qui sous-tendent les pratiques d’achat telles que la quête de conformité sociale. Cette plongée dans l’univers Action nous conduit à souligner le poids des contraintes sociales comme frein à la transition consommatoire et démontre une nouvelle fois qu’il faut considérer le shopping, non pas comme une simple activité économique, mais comme une pratique socio-culturelle associée au temps de loisirs, de détente et de divertissement.
Le cabas et le travail gratuit des micro-influenceuses

Si Action n’a pas inventé les bazars comme concept commercial, l’enseigne a su se faire une place d’une manière singulière et avec une rapidité époustouflante dans le paysage commercial. L’enseigne a été principalement connue par l’intermédiaire de son cabas réutilisable, repéré entre les mains d’un nombre considérable d’individus croisés dans la rue, simples piétons ou automobilistes stationnés vidant le coffre de leur voiture. La large diffusion du sac, frappé d’un logo volontairement simple, à la typographie quelque peu rétro-futuriste, a assuré à l’enseigne une médiatisation jusqu’à des endroits dépourvus de point de vente.

Un second élément qui distingue Action de ses concurrents repose sur l’investissement numérique et amateur des clientes dans la mise en scène des produits et des bonnes affaires sur les réseaux sociaux. Typiques du secteur du hard-discount orienté vers la réduction des coûts superflus, les magasins sont spartiates mais, chez Action ou Noz, ceux-ci sont en quelque sorte « augmentés » par une communication numérique prise en charge par des influenceuses bénévoles. Hyperconnectées, présentes sur Instagram, Facebook, You Tube et TikTok, elles délivrent à leur communauté des conseils relatifs à l’usage des produits, les mettent en scène dans leur intérieur et participent ainsi à la médiatisation de l’enseigne et à sa valorisation. Une enquête menée auprès de ces micro-influenceuses aboutit à deux résultats. D’une part, il s’agit dans un grand nombre de cas de jeunes mères de famille en couple qui, par cet investissement numérique, trouvent un moyen de mettre entre parenthèses leur assignation souvent précoce aux tâches domestiques. D’autre part, une grande part d’entre elles active et actualise une disposition créative, acquise durant l’adolescence, par la production technique et artistique de contenus destinés à leur communauté. Le travail gratuit et dénié au service de la marque est réalisé avec satisfaction, sur un mode ludique. Il redouble d’intensité chez celles qui démarchent la marque pour devenir, sans succès, une influenceuse officielle et rémunérée.
Norme décorative et conformité sociale

Mis en scène sur les médias sociaux par ses clientes les plus familières, le foyer est la cible privilégiée d’Action. L’enseigne fournit, à petits prix, de quoi équiper et décorer son intérieur. En parcourant les contenus publiés en ligne par les adeptes de la marque, l’observateur repère un nombre limité d’objets mis en avant : abat-jours, coussins, bougies, soucoupes, petits cadres photo, décoration pour Noël, têtes de lit, lampes de chevet, dessous de plat, vaisselle colorée, produits d’hygiène corporelle, petites corbeilles pour salle de bains, petits tapis, rideaux occultants, étagères, plateaux, couvertures pour canapé, verres à dent, planches à découper en bambou, globes terrestres miniatures, petits bancs à positionner au bout d’un lit double, fleurs artificielles, parfums d’intérieur, horloges industrielles, bibelots décoratifs. Ce rapide inventaire se compose quasi-exclusivement d’objets de décoration.

Parmi ses 6000 références – dont 1500 à moins d’un euro – , Action regroupe aussi une offre large de produits de droguerie et d’hygiène mais ceux-ci sont très peu valorisés sur les comptes Instagram des influenceuses. C’est la décoration qui fonde en grande partie l’attractivité de l’enseigne. En 2022, le cabinet Xerfi livrait une étude approfondie du secteur : « Arts de la table et de la cuisine, objets de décoration, linge et textile maison, luminaires : tous les segments profitent du dynamisme de l’immobilier de logement et des projets d’aménagement intérieur des Français ». Le marché a bondi de 14 % en 2021 et pèse plus de 14 milliards d’euros. Le recentrage sur le « chez soi », observé pendant et à l’issue des confinements du Covid, a indiscutablement constitué une aubaine pour Action.

Cette croissance décorative s’inscrit dans une histoire vieille de près de deux cents ans et celle-ci semble franchir aujourd’hui une étape supplémentaire. Par sa politique commerciale et son maillage du territoire, Action rend en effet possible l’adoption par l’ensemble de la population de ce qu’il convient d’appeler la norme décorative.

La passion pour les bibelots s’empare des bourgeoisies européennes et américaines dès les années 1830 [3]. De petits objets décoratifs, produits en série et acquis dans les magasins de nouveautés et les grands magasins, peuplent les espaces privés, dans des vitrines, sur les cheminés, les tables des chambres à coucher, les meubles. Potiches chinoises, boîtes sculptées, pipes, coquillages exotiques, boules à neige, éventails, gravures romantiques, poupées et jouets anciens s’accumulent dans les intérieurs bourgeois et incarnent, selon Gilles Lipovetsky et Jean Serroy, une première étape de l’essor du kitsch [4]. La collection de bibelots devient une norme au fur et à mesure que la production industrielle en série s’impose et que les grands magasins stimulent, par des techniques de théâtralisation de l’offre, l’attractivité de la marchandise. L’achat de bibelots constitue une activité dévolue aux femmes dont le devoir est d’embellir l’espace familial. La pratique intègre enfin les activités improductives tournées vers l’ostentation statutaire saisie par Veblen au sein de la classe de loisir.

Du côté du peuple, un détour par les études pionnières de sociologie de la consommation nous apprend que, chez les employés, l’orientation des dépenses vers le confort et l’équipement du foyer est également ancienne. Celles-ci les distinguent des ouvriers. En relisant les observations statistiques de Maurice Halbwachs, Christian Baudelot et Roger Establet notent par exemple « qu’en accédant à des niveaux d’aisance comparables, les ouvriers et les employés se distinguent plus que jamais par leur façon de vivre. Ici la richesse améliore l’ordinaire de la table et permet de soigner les apparences ; là on s’occupe d’améliorer le confort du logement [5] ».

Plus récemment, une enquête menée sur les fractions économiquement stables des classes populaires témoigne de la diffusion de cette norme décorative. En dépit de ressources budgétaires différentes et de structures de dépenses toujours distinctes, les membres des catégories populaires revendiquent des attentes partagées. Pour le cas de leurs fractions stabilisées – celles qui firent notamment irruption sur la scène médiatique à l’automne 2018 dans le cadre du mouvement des Gilets jaunes –, Thomas Amossé et Marie Cartier mettent en évidence la volonté de « consommer comme tout le monde », c’est-à-dire de se conformer au goût des classes moyennes et supérieures. La recherche de la conformité sociale par la consommation s’illustre, chez certains ménages interrogés, par l’investissement dans la décoration intérieure mais aussi dans la maroquinerie, les vêtements et le parfum de marque ; des achats qui traduisent le désir des ménages populaires d’acquérir des biens tournés vers une esthétique et un raffinement associés aux ménages les plus aisés[6].

Le succès d’Action traduit aujourd’hui l’adoption généralisée de la norme décorative. Longtemps tenus au « goût du nécessaire[7] » et aux seules consommations orientées vers la fonctionnalité, les milieux populaires trouvent chez ce distributeur le moyen de renforcer au sein du foyer la place des objets qui visent à l’esthétisation du décor et à l’introduction de la dimension imaginaire.
Un divertissement populaire dénué de tout jugement moral

Parallèlement à cette demande de conformité sociale qui, en tant que contrainte, se dresse sur le chemin de l’orientation vers la sobriété matérielle, les différents propos de clients familiers traduisent un ancrage fort de l’enseigne dans leur quotidien. Il semble primordial d’examiner cet attachement et ses ressorts sociaux. Celui-ci repose sur l’existence d’un double plaisir éprouvé face à la sur-consommation : celui de faire l’acquisition de produits dont on assume l’inutilité fonctionnelle, d’une part, celui de déambuler dans les allées de magasins à l’aménagement sommaire, d’autre part.

« Les produits sont bons et les prix très bas mais c’est vrai qu’on ressort avec beaucoup de conneries aussi », concède une employée de cantine interrogée par Émilien Hertement, journaliste à Marianne (2023). Âgée de 21 ans, Lucie, qui déclare 1400 euros de revenus mensuels, estime « qu’on achète toujours plus de choses dont on n’a pas besoin ». Influencée par des courtes vidéos diffusées sur TikTok, Celena, 14 ans, accompagne sa mère agente administrative et se montre elle-aussi lucide : « on achète des conneries et on ne sait même pas si on va les utiliser, mais il fait gris dehors, on vient ici parce que ça nous fait plaisir ». Siham, à la tête d’un grand organisme public, est tout aussi réaliste après avoir acheté une spirale anti-moustique et des haltères : « On est totalement dans le consumérisme, on vient pour acheter des futilités pas chères ».

La restitution des témoignages pourrait être allongée sans difficulté de quelques paragraphes. Elle traduit une reconnaissance assumée de l’inutilité fonctionnelle des produits achetés ou, plus exactement, les petits prix permettent de mettre à distance toute réflexion relative à l’utilité. Ils justifient la permanence du gadget. Chez Action, cette dynamique est alimentée par le renouvellement hebdomadaire de l’offre qui entretient le goût du « nouveau », lequel conduit à la fréquentation régulière du magasin par ses clients (150 nouvelles références commercialisées chaque semaine).

L’inclinaison pour la flânerie est également mise en avant. « On vient deux fois par semaine pour s’y promener », déclare Corinne, employée de restauration collective. Lorette, 46 ans et mère de deux adolescents, « vient s’y promener quand elle a un moment ». Lucie, qui achète le jour de l’interview un arbre magique, des friandises pour son chat et du gel d’aloe vera, admet elle aussi qu’elle est venue s’y promener car il ne fait pas très beau.

Rien n’est ici original. L’argument de la promenade est toujours avancé par les individus interrogés dans le cadre d’enquêtes consacrées aux usages sociaux des espaces marchands [8]. Ce qu’il est toutefois nécessaire de souligner, c’est que la pratique de la promenade autour des lieux marchands, et celle du shopping observée dès le XVIIIe siècle qui se conclut par une transaction économique, relève de l’univers des loisirs, hors des contraintes des temps professionnel et domestique. Celle-ci procure du plaisir, en particulier parce qu’elle s’inscrit dans des relations sociales.

La fréquentation régulière d’Action et ses leviers rappellent par ailleurs les raisons de la puissance de la civilisation du kitsch telle qu’elle est examinée par Gilles Lipovetsky et Jean Serroy : « Sous la lourdeur kitsch des bibelots de pacotille se trouvent la légèreté du shopping et du lèche-vitrine, la fantaisie ludique des achats de curiosité et de mode[9] ». Criard, extravagant, stéréotypé, industriel et sans valeur, le kitsch charrie avec lui un ensemble de traits péjoratifs. Si « la civilisation du trop » possède toujours ses contempteurs, épinglant son snobisme, sa superficialité et le gaspillage matériel qu’il engendre, il faut aussi reconnaître qu’il constitue un divertissement populaire, accessible à tous, sans effort et dénué de tout jugement moral. Telle est la fonction principale de cet art du quotidien auquel on peut intégrer sans difficulté le shopping et l’achat de bibelots, la quête et la valorisation de la bonne affaire chez Action. Ce type de pratique socio-culturelle se déploie sur un temps libéré des contraintes productives et des obligations domestiques.
Action dans la civilisation des loisirs

L’examen sociologique de l’attachement des consommateurs à l’enseigne Action, et plus largement à la frénésie des achats dans les magasins discount et de déstockage non alimentaires, nous conduit à poser la question suivante. Alors que la critique du consumérisme s’est déployée à l’encontre de l’hypermarché et que la plateforme chinoise de prêt-à-porter Shein suscite le courroux des ONG pour des raisons sociales et environnementales, Action et ses concurrents ne font l’objet d’aucune critique. Leur capacité à entretenir la sur-consommation ou à ne proposer que des emplois peu rémunérés et des postes peu qualifiés ne fait pourtant aucun doute.

Certes Action contribue à l’emploi local, en particulier sur des territoires désindustrialisés, mais Amazon ou les grandes surfaces alimentaires y assurent le même rôle socio-économique. L’explication est à rechercher ailleurs. Ces néo-bazars délivrent un service matériel et immatériel aux consommateurs. Ils leur fournissent des produits accessibles pour se conformer aux normes de consommation dominantes, dont il faut rappeler qu’elles s’articulent encore majoritairement autour du matérialisme. Mais ces distributeurs procurent également une occupation à une grande partie de la population. Les clients se déplacent volontiers en magasin, parfois quotidiennement, et parcourent souvent plusieurs dizaines de kilomètres pour s’y rendre. Cette activité leur procure une satisfaction qui s’inscrit souvent dans des relations familiales ou amicales. Le pouvoir de s’insérer dans l’échange marchand, au-delà de la jouissance des biens et de leur usage, s’assimile ici à un divertissement accessible à tous à l’image de l’implication temporelle et logistique que nécessite la revente de biens d’occasion sur les plateformes [10].

L’intrication des pratiques marchandes dans des relations sociales sur ces nouvelles places du village que sont ce type de commerces populaires rend difficilement efficace tout appel à la sobriété matérielle et à la moralisation individuelle. C’est oublier que le commerce remplit bien plus de fonctions sociales qu’un simple approvisionnement.

Modern power supplies adjust their power usage according to their loads over time, so apps or services using a lot of processing power over time, are going to use more energy. This is especially noticeable if the device is battery powered like a laptop.

This also does not only work for Intel processors, but also AMD and ARM as well.

fvwm3 1.1.4rc2 is on jobcomm


This is really solid floating wm with low ram footprint and infinite customization possibilities. Unfortunately the default is configuring it all with one huge conf file

It has an option to build with Go Lang (google programming language - like rust but googled) and this provides a minimalistic terminal window as a wm console (called fvwm-prompt) but without this pest code it builds the alternative called fvwm-console, which is just as good.

All other whistles and bells are turned on so enjoy playing with it.

At least last few days I remembering a Cory Doctorow's ( @pluralistic ) "Walkaway" science fiction novel.

It is about "walkaways" who tired of that shit and trying to live outside of the capitalistic world and about an extra reach oligarchy who breaks (or breaked?) the world (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkaway… ). And looks like it is not a fiction now :dragnshock:
