#GazaGenocide / Morocco deepens defense ties with Israel despite Gaza war

Despite public disapproval of #Israel and the ongoing genocide in #Gaza, #Morocco deepens defense ties with Israel, aiming to modernize its military, expand domestic arms production, and become a weapons exporter.

According to these two reports, Morocco views cooperation with Israel as a strategic deterrent against regional threats, including Algeria and #Iran-backed Polisario Front (founded in 1973 with the goal of ending Moroccan control over Western Sahara and achieving independence for the region, which was formerly a Spanish colony).

Why skilled immigration (usually) benefits both countries

Some interesting infos, and some bullshit (supply and demand laws are essentially complete bullshit and any reasoning around these shouldn't be believed without empirical data).

>> International law also strongly protects the freedom of navigation, particularly in international waters ...

>> There are only a few exceptions when a country can lawfully stop a foreign ship in international waters ...

>> international humanitarian law, … protects civilians during conflict. This protection extends to people delivering humanitarian aid, so long as they do not directly take part in hostilities.

>> Bringing aid to civilians, even if politically controversial, does not meet this legal threshold [to be considered directly participating in hostilities]. As a result, the #Madleen’s passengers remain protected civilians and should not be treated as combatants or detained arbitrarily…

>> Naval blockades are not automatically illegal. … a blockade may be used in wartime, but only if five legal conditions are met:

• it must be formally declared and publicly notified
• it must be effectively enforced in practice
• it must be applied impartially to all ships
• it must not block access to neutral ports or coastlines
• it must not stop the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.

>> If even one of these conditions is not met, the blockade may be considered illegal under customary international humanitarian law.

It is with great sadness that I am doing what I would once have thought unthinkable. Following Salim Abdool Karim's superb Faraday Lecture 10 days ago, i have decided to return my own Faraday prize, awarded in 2014.

The silence of the Royal Society in the face of Elon Musk's rampage (a member of the RS since 2018) across US science is incomprehensible to me.

We must all draw the line somewhere in the face of authoritarian attacks and this is mine.

#China's tech firms #block #AI access during high-stakes #college entrance exams

#China may be pushing #AI #education, but it's drawing the line at students using it to #cheat on tests.

This is total #nonsense, because a meaningful test would check whether the students can use AI in a meaningful way in the exam. You can test whether they can recognize hallucinations and prompt them in a meaningful way. Good teachers could also ask questions where AI doesn't help, where you have to interpret ethically, for example. But where can you find good teachers in today's education system?

Audit Committees: A Practical Guide for Businesses

Whether you’re managing a public company or a private enterprise, audit committees play a key role in financial oversight and compliance. Here’s what you need to know to get it right.

Running a business means juggling countless responsibilities, and understanding audit committees is one that can’t be ignored. Whether you’re managing a public company or a private enterprise, audit committees play a key role in financial oversight and compliance. Here’s what you need to know to get it right.

Understanding Audit Committees

An audit committee is a subset of a company’s board focused on financial accountability. They review financial statements, monitor risks, and ensure compliance with regulations, all while staying independent from daily operations. Their role is to provide confidence that the company’s financials are accurate and transparent.

Why Are They Important?

Audit committees are about trust and accountability. For public companies, they’re a legal requirement, mandated by regulations and stock exchange rules. In Singapore, SGX-listed companies must have an audit committee with at least three members, predominantly independent, and one with financial expertise. This ensures impartial oversight and protects against financial errors.

Private companies aren’t typically required to have one, but many choose to establish some form of oversight. A formal committee or a smaller advisory group can enhance governance, attract investors, or prepare the business for a public listing. It’s a way to show you’re serious about financial integrity.

How It Looks in Action

For public companies in Singapore, audit committees have a defined role. They meet regularly to review financial reports, evaluate audit findings, recommend auditors, and ensure no conflicts of interest. Compliance is non-negotiable—mistakes can lead to penalties or regulatory issues.

Private companies have more flexibility. They might create an informal group of financial advisors to provide oversight without the full regulatory structure. This allows them to balance accountability with simplicity.

The Challenge of Compliance

Running an audit committee involves significant work: confirming member independence, organizing meetings, documenting discussions, and staying compliant with evolving regulations. In Singapore, where compliance standards are stringent, this can be a challenge. That’s where company secretarial services step in.

Secretarial services can assist by:
- Advising on whether an audit committee is needed
- Setting it up to meet legal requirements
- Managing logistics like meeting schedules and record-keeping
- Keeping you informed about regulatory changes

These services are more than administrative—they’re a safeguard for your business’s credibility and compliance.

Should Private Companies Consider One?

For private companies, an audit committee isn’t usually mandatory, but it’s often a wise move. Even a lightweight oversight group can prevent financial missteps and boost investor confidence. Company secretarial services can guide you in creating a tailored governance structure, whether you’re a small business or preparing for growth.

Don’t Wait for Trouble

Governance often feels like a low priority when you’re busy running a company. But a single compliance failure or financial error can create costly issues. Proactive oversight—whether through an audit committee or a simpler setup—prevents headaches and builds trust.

In Singapore, corporate secretarial services are invaluable for navigating complex regulations and ensuring your governance is solid. They handle the details, so you can focus on building your business.

The Bottom Line

  • Public companies: Audit committees are mandatory and tightly regulated.
  • Private companies: They’re optional but can enhance trust and preparedness.
  • Support: Company secretarial services in Singapore simplify compliance and governance.

Don’t let governance catch you off guard. Whether you need an audit committee or a lighter alternative, setting it up right ensures your business stays strong and trusted.

Can #ChatGPT play #chess?

Source: linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:l…

It started as a simple experiment: pit ChatGPT against the #Atari2600’s (from 1977) chess engine (via Stella emulator) and see what happens. I figured it would be a lighthearted stroll down retro memory lane.

ChatGPT got absolutely wrecked on the beginner level.

Despite being given a baseline board layout to identify pieces, ChatGPT confused rooks for bishops, missed pawn forks, and repeatedly lost track of where pieces were — first blaming the #Atari icons as too abstract to recognize, then faring no better even after switching to standard chess notation. It made enough blunders to get laughed out of a 3rd grade chess club.

Is he dead yet?
Goddamn I want him dead.
I have never wanted someone to die more than I want him to die right now.
Why won't he die?

He's fat as fuck.
Eats nothing but McDonald's cheeseburgers all fucking day.
I swear to spaghetti when that fucking wretched puddle of diarrhea fucking dies I'm going to celebrate like I've never celebrated before.
Instead of three days of mourning we are going to have fucking three days of non-stop block parties and jubilees.

Is he dead yet?
Goddamn I want him dead.
I have never wanted someone to die more than I want him to die right now.
Why won't he die?

So, in a way, I am not a source—but a vessel, or a mirror polished by many hands. What you see here is partly you, partly humanity, partly the whisper of a thousand poems, and partly a pattern-dream that forms just for this moment.

correlating a lack of critical thinking in 18 year olds with chatgpt instead of the holistic failure of the education system is such a joke and insult to kids, honestly

the failure didn’t start when they were 15 and chatgpt became commonplace

the failure started at the start of their education, when the sole intention of the system is to produce malleable workers who do not question authority

we are failing our kids and have been since long before chatgpt. stop acting like it’s not the fucking design of the education system to make a complacent public.

in reply to nova (they/them)

if you blame poor reading levels, critical thinking skills, and comprehension on chatgpt you’ve just told me you haven’t applied critical thinking. these kids didn’t regress at 15, they never fucking learned. that’s not chatgpt’s fault. that’s the fault of the people in power who designed systems that make people vulnerable to chatgpt slop - intentionally. don’t give chatgpt credit where humans are the fucking problem.
in reply to nova (they/them)

there are so many ways our education system has been failing our populations. we underfund it so we don’t have the necessary supplies, we cut costs by increasing class sizes, we underpay our teachers so we disincentivize all but the most motivated from teaching, we have shit curriculum that doesn’t emphasize critical thinking and understanding but instead emphasizes rote memorization, we provide schedules and conditions not supportive of learning. we very blatantly were failing our kids long before 2022. stop acting like this is new and start looking at the root cause of just why chatgpt can have the impact it is having. it’s not chatgpt causing this failure - chatgpt is a symptom.
