This is the 100 year anniversary of humans having an idea of what the heck the sun and all the stars actually are. If you had asked a leading astronomer in 1925 what the sun was, they would say that it's basically the same as Earth, but very hot.

In Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis she was the first to say, from spectral data, that the sun was overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium.

It was later described as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy".

Finished @pluralistic 's "The Masque of the Red Death" in his "_Radicalized_ anthology. All in one sitting which is unusual for me; I was surprisingly invested in the story.

Again, good writing style and good story. I found the development of Graciela at the end to be too fairytale-ish or altruistic to be realistic, but I am a cynic.

Turned the last page with high anticipation to read the ending and the page was blank! Very nicely done! That was some master craftmanship.

Highly recommended.

Got it working again with a replacement power adapter... but only with the secondary USB-C port in the dock connector, not the primary charging port.

The Thunderbolt firmware issue probably took out the main charging port. It doesn't work as a charger, but does work as a USB port and recognized the USB ethernet adapter I plugged in.

I also updated BIOS and firmware with the Lenovo System Update utility.

Today I will be cleaning and testing a ThinkPad T490s laptop. The owner thinks the DC jack may be broken, but I am not sure yet that is the problem.

I will try with another power adapter to check to see if the charger is the problem.

This T490s is not the normal flat black color, but a steel grey color.

The main difference between The Empire and the US is that The Empire was actually competent. Imperial officers at least pretended to be sober at strategy meetings. This video was inspired by the following blog post, which echoed my sentiment and ideas exactly: ypsidanger.com/the-distributio…

The distro packages the software for their users. Not the developers of the software, the distro itself. So the distro has a decent amount of control over what they offer, but the users of the distro don't, and the developers of the apps also don't. And this model doesn't really work.

On the surface, for users, it does work. You get a lot of applications from a central repo, and the system is generally pretty stable, depending on the distro you pick.
But in the background, you have the thousands of orphaned packages that are still in the repos but aren't maintained. The old apps that can't be packaged at all anymore. The maintainers spending a lot of time repackaging and recompiling software that has already been packaged.

One might not like Ubuntu's snap packages, or Flatpak, or AppImages, but it's undeniable that most distros are moving towards them.

When Ubuntu moves Firefox and Chromium from a deb package to a snap, it's a GOOD THING. For Ubuntu. Because instead of having to package each new version of Firefox or CHromium for all currently supported versions of Ubuntu, they only have to package them once.

Same thing when Red Hat drops the LibreOffice RPM in favor of the Flatpak. Not having to package that behemoth of an app will free up time for Red Hat developers to work on HDR, improving Wayland, and supporting color management.

And moving the packaging of an app from the distro to the app developer means less time spent debugging stuff, and more time spend on improving the app.

So why did Linux distros start packaging software instead of app developers?

It was because there were so many different systems using the same packaging formats, deb or RPM or whatever else, but different libraries, kernels, drivers, and everything else, that app developers simply did not have a way to distribute their own software to every distro.

But nowadays, we DO have formats that let you distribute applications everywhere with one single package.

They lack some features, especially due to the sandboxing they tend to use, that limits how they can interact with other apps. Thing is, these formats are still under heavy development.

But the real question is: do you prefer staying on the current model where we stagnate, duplicate work, and where developers and users have no control over which version of the software is used, or would you rather face a few teething issues, but let developers improve their apps, and the whole of the Linux software ecosystem?

I know what I choose, and it's not these old packages. And presumably, if you stick to mainstream distros, like Fedora, Ubuntu, or their main derivatives, chances are you're not going to have a choice either. Because whether you like it or not, we're moving to Flatpak or Snap on most distros.

It's more efficient, and their current problems can and will be fixed. The duplication of work that legacy packaging creates is unfixable, it's a structural problem.

And of course, if you hate these universal packaging formats, I'm sure you'll still be able to find a lot of distros that will not move to them even in the future. You'll just be running the non official version of an app, just like what you're doing right now when using a distro's package.

Why aren't there more nutritionists on Youtube? (and Peertube)

When looking for nutritional information, 2 ~~doctors~~ guys always show up in Youtube searches: KenDBerryMD and Dr. Eric Berg.

I don't know much about either, but a cursory search shows Berg is a quack and it looks like Ken promotes nonsense like the carnivore diet.

Why are these two so prevalent on youtube? Neither of them are actual nutritionists, but they're everywhere when searching for nutrition information.

Where are the real nutritionists? Why aren't they putting forth more effort to make sure nutrition knowledge is accessible and accurate?

Part of me is genuinely thinking it's because of money. They'd rather only share their knowledge in secret with the people paying them because if more people knew about nutrition, then they wouldn't be as necessary.

archive.org/details/the-king-a…

Just watched the King and the Mockingbird, which supposedly took 40 years to make. Good mech movie with a unique setting (that gets totally destroyed). Some of the music reminded me of Peter Jackson's LOTR, and one of the gags was used later in Ren and Stimpy. Really strange, really tonally diverse, and very high production value. Very French sense of character design, though not as scarily detailed as Chomet's work.

Watched this back to back with Day the Earth Blew Up and the 40's/80's tendancy to spend an hour and a half on a 45 minute story was the most jarring difference.

Minority report:
Birds - all good guys.
Handsome aryans - good
Lions - are persuaded by promise of food
faggots - really, really faggy looking

Linux won't boot, looking for help

Hey there. I’m totally new to Linux. I’m not the most tech savvy, but I’m fed up with windows and want to go elsewhere. For the time being I figured I’d dual boot, and got everything set up on a usb. I plugged it in, booted up Linux Mint, and it worked smoothly. I ended the session, powered off my pc, removed the usb, booted up windows 11, freed up some disc space and did some other stuff on my computer, then turned it off for a bit. When I went to boot it up again, I got this message:

Failed to open \EFI\B00T\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image ??: Not Found Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import mok-state() failed: Not Found

and then the computer powered off. I tried disabling fast start or whatever it’s called, as well as secure boot, and it’s still giving me that. Windows still boots up just fine. Does anyone have any advice? Like I said I don’t have much technical knowledge so a dumbed down response would be really appreciated. I’ve looked up a few forums and nothing gave me much.

Oh also, when I try to boot it and it gives me the error and turns off, if I turn it back on but boot up windows, I get a message saying something was blocked due to a security system I have to disable, but doesn’t tell me what that security system is or how to disable it. It’s getting a little frustrating. I don’t know why it worked once but not anymore.

Update: I got it working. Thanks everyone for the help.

When you freed up the disk space windows seems to have broken mints bootloader partition. You could fix it if you wanted, but at beginner level its probably best to reinstall. If you need to recover any data from you "broken" mint partition you can plug the mint USB in, boot into the live environment and look in your files mount you old mint files and backup anything you want to keep before reinstalling.

Depends on how much of a nerd you are. If the idea of rescuing your system using the terminal sounds fun then try otherwise just reinstall.
