Prior to getting my Masters and PhD in Nuclear Engineering at Berkeley I was a nuclear trained officer on a submarine. After graduating I worked in reactor core design at a nuclear company. I now work as a nuclear physicist at a national lab.
I just wanted to establish my bona fides before assuring you that yes, your assumption is correct that bombing any kind of nuclear infrastructure is dangerous and reckless as fuck.
My husband is also a nuclear physicist at a national lab & whenever I ask him questions like this about current events he usually says, βI probably shouldnβt say anything.β So thank you for confirming my suspicions!

I appreciate the introduction. The closest I came to your experience was running a microwave link to Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids Iowa, when I was an engineer at uiowa. Hope this amuses you: My friend Cynthia once told a story of how "nuclear trained officers" showed her the inside of their sub while she was modeling in Italy - the reason she came to Iowa City was the late Hans Breder. She had an interest in CAD, but only for designing clothes.

Perhaps you will give my assumption some consideration, that Iran has lied its way towards becoming a nuclear power. Since Trump has no interest in world peace, Iran has proceeded on its merry way - and nobody will stop them.
Thank you for making this clear. Every nuclear installation that could be bombed or e.g. a passenger jet flown into is a source of danger. Of course this is also true for e.g. chemical plants.
We've had experience mixing radioactives and high explosives for almost exactly 80 years now and in all that time we have not solved the problems of atmospheric dispersion, aerosol transport, inhalation and submersion dose. We quibble over details but the fundamentals remain - if you do not want radioactive material all over, you should not blow it up.
I've been working on this problem professionally on and off for 30 years on the civil nuclear side; power plants, legacy defense waste. Your assessment is spot on - bombing nuclear facilities is reckless, dangerous, and egregiously irresponsible. There's no other way to spin it. (diagram from osti.gov/biblio/4743102)
I hate that this became more relevant. I want all my friends with knowledge in what happens when things go bad with nuclear reactors to be less relevant to the newsβ¦.Blargh
Maybe this is why they did it? They had solid intel that there werenβt any weapons grade material? So they can pretend they did something important knowing that it really wasnβt a big threat? Dunno. Iβm just a random dude on the net speculating.
