Google says a new AI tool on its search engine will rejuvenate the internet. Others predict an apocalypse for websites. One thing is clear: the current chapter of online history is careening towards its end. Welcome to the "machine web".

The web is built on a simple bargain – websites let search engines like Google slurp up their content, free of charge, and Google Search sends people to websites in exchange, where they buy things and look at adverts. That's how most sites make money.

An estimated 68% of internet activity starts on search engines and about 90% of searches happen on Google. If the internet is a garden, Google is the Sun that lets the flowers grow.

This arrangement held strong for decades, but a seemingly minor change has some convinced that the system is crumbling. You'll soon see a new AI tool on Google Search. You may find it very useful. But if critics' predictions come true, it will also have seismic consequences for the internet. They paint a picture where quality information could grow scarcer online and large numbers of people might lose their jobs. Optimists say instead this could improve the web's business model and expand opportunities to find great content. But, for better or worse, your digital experiences may never be the same again.

On 20 May 2025, Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai walked on stage at the company's annual developer conference. It's been a year since the launch of AI Overviews, the AI-generated responses you've probably seen at the top of Google Search results. Now, Pichai said, Google is going further. "For those who want an end-to-end AI Search experience, we are introducing an all-new AI Mode," he said. "It's a total reimagining of Search."

You might be sceptical after years of AI hype, but this, for once, is the real deal.

Valve isn't making their next Steam Deck anytime soon because the technology doesn't exist yet. You can crank up the wattage and put in a bigger battery, but those things make the handheld larger, heavier, and hotter, so they're not interested. This is a bottleneck from AMD and their R&D.

But especially due to live service anti cheat and Game Pass, I agree that there's a potential market for this strategy. There's certainly no way they compete with Sony by doing what consoles have always done.

"...we aren't thinking about new hardware until next year at least" doesn't mean that they aren't working on it now. And they seem to have low confidence that said new hardware will even make it out next year. Yes, we are likely years out from a new Steam Deck, and you shouldn't plan on one being imminent. That's not the same thing as them no longer working on it.

Yes, I did. I also didn't read between the lines and take that to mean that they're not working on it, investing in it, etc. It just means that we can't predict the future, and what makes sense now might not make sense in a few years when the technology does exist. The Outlook section was the author's conjecture of what could come to pass, but he can't predict the future either.

That was seven months ago, and it's very clear. Successful gaming hardware usually starts prototyping the next one very quickly, even if it's years away. If they didn't, then they'd always lag far behind the latest technology. Valve don't know the year. With tariffs alone, trying to set a release date for a new piece of hardware could be a nightmare.

Egyptian authorities halted demonstrators planning to march to the country’s border with #Gaza with the stated aim of breaking Israel’s blockade on the territory.

A separate convoy of protesters travelling from Tunisia to meet the larger group was also stopped on Friday by security forces in eastern Libya.

Heute ist der 14-Jun-2025. Heute vor 40 Jahren, am 14-Jun-1985, wurde das "Übereinkommen zwischen den Regierungen der Staaten der Benelux-Wirtschaftsunion, der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Französischen Republik betreffend den schrittweisen Abbau der Kontrollen an den gemeinsamen Grenzen" (Schengen I) unterzeichnet.

Das war auf viele Weisen ein bemerkensweter Schritt, denn noch zu Zeiten meines Großvaters wurde Frankreich in Deutschland gerne als "Der Erbfeind" bezeichnet.

Der Weg zu dem, was wir heute haben war lang und schmerzhaft.

In Sankt Germanshof, einem Ort im Elsaß, der im Laufe der Geschichte wahlweise Frankreich oder Deutschland zugerechnet worde, kam es am 6. August 1950 zum sogenannten Grenzsturm: 300 europabegeisterte Studenten überrumpelten die Zöller, zerstörten die Schlagbäume, und rissen Grenzschilder runter, um sie durch neue Schilder zu ersetzen:

Das Schengen I Abkommen von 1985, unterzeichnet unter anderem von Mitterand und Kohl, hat jedoch nur die Grundlage zu offenen Grenzen in Europa gelegt. Das SDÜ 1990 jedoch (gemeinhin Schengen II genannt) erst regelt die Details wie man das machen will mit den offenen Grenzen und erst seit dem 26. März 1995 haben wir tatsächlich offene Grenzen.

Das ist eine der größten Errungenschaften von Europa, das Zeichen der Überwindung von Jahrhunderten gegenseitigen Mordens und ererbter Fehen, Feindschaften und Diskriminierungen.

Heute, 40 Jahre nach dem Abkommen, pissen Leute wie Dobrindt auf dieses Abkommen und ruinieren mit illegalen Grenzkontrollen die Arbeit von 75 Jahren Frieden und europäischer Vereinigung, um im Wettstreit mit faschistischen Populisten vermeintlich Boden gutmachen zu können.

Wir alle, als Menschen in Europa, müssen solchen Brandstiftern Einhalt gebieten und unsere Rechte als Europäer einfordern.

The social contract in the United States is broken

The government no longer exists to serve us. Too many greedy shitbags have had their elections bought so they could use their power against the working class.

We no longer need to respect the rule of law. We no longer need to worry about the future of the nation.

Focus on yourself. Focus on those close to you. Stop contributing to the economy as much as you can while still taking everything you can from it.

Vandalism is a great way to fight back with minimal risk to yourselves. It doesn't require organization and can happen spontaneously when the opportunities arise.

Buckle up, we're in for a long ride.

Auswahl der News auch immer wieder absurd. Was interessiert mich nen Flugzeug, das in Indien abstürzt. Da gibts nichts was ich dran ändern kann. Muss ich nicht tagelang drüber lesen. So lange das kein systematisches Problem ist kann ich auch nix draus lernen.

Unsere Demokratie und die Biosphäre stürzen ab, die Regierung baut Mist. Darüber in den News? Absolut nix.

Wenn man glaubt man hat das meiste auf dem Rad schon erlebt und dann das.
Tochter überzeugt Freundin zum Handballtunier zu Radeln. ich fahre mit. Sie fahren in langer Kurve nebeneinander. Auto überholt, hupt, pöbelt. An der Ampel trifft man sich wieder. Ich mache Foto vom Fahrer. Er fährt vor, 500m weiter blockiert er den Fußweg mit dem Auto, blockiert den Radweg breitbeinig, wir wuerden das nun mal klären.

Kool-Aid Man (1983) for the Atari 2600

Ah yes, Kool-Aid Man. On the intro screen, he bursts through a brick wall—and if you're going to make a game about Kool-Aid Man, that's mandatory.

If Kool-Aid Man doesn't crash through something at the start, is it even a Kool-Aid Man game? (No. It’s not.)

Now the goal here is simple: protect the precious Kool-Aid from what I can only describe as sentient bombs with straws. They’re called Thirsties, which sounds like the name of a failed emo band, but whatever. These little creeps try to slurp up all your Kool-Aid—which is weird, because I thought drinking the Kool-Aid was the entire point of Kool-Aid.

Anyway, you’ve got to wait until they actually start drinking before you slam into them. Do it too early and nothing happens. Wait too long and they tap you first, sending you careening across the screen like a sentient bowling ball. Bonus tip: don’t touch the walls either, because apparently the Kool-Aid Man is so full of juice that the slightest touch make him bounce.

People like to blame games like this for the Great Video Game Crash. But I say no way. This game has charm. It's got bounce (literally). It's got bright colors. It’s got Kool-Aid Man yelling "OH YEAH!" like he just snorted a line of Pixy Stix. Okay, he doesn't literally do this, but in my head canon, he does.

Sure, this is advertising. But so was Cool Spot for the SEGA Genesis, and most people agree that game was pretty darn good too. So cut Kool-Aid Man some slack. He may be a glass-bodied corporate shill, but by god, he’s our glass-bodied corporate shill.

Oddly, this was made by Mattel Electronics for their M Network imprint, which they used for systems that weren't published for Intellivision. In this case, Kool-Aid Man was an Atari 2600. And I don't understand why this game wasn't available for Mattel's own console. Was Kool-Aid Man too cool for those dweebs who played Intellivision?

We may never know. But one thing’s for sure: Kool-Aid Man definitely belonged on the Atari.
