"The command centre of the Israeli military is located in the middle of Tel Aviv's urban centre, not isolated on military grounds, but embedded in densely populated residential areas. Civilians live all around, while surface-to-air missiles are perched on the rooftops, ready for use. This deliberate merging of military infrastructure with civilian structures is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. Articles 48 and 51(7) of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions clearly prohibit this practice.

The technology of these systems leaves no room for doubt. The radar covers a radius of over 100 kilometres and the missiles themselves have a range of around 70 kilometres. These defence systems could easily be located outside urban areas. But they are located in the centre of the city. The Israeli military leadership is not choosing this location out of necessity, but out of calculation.

A defence system is not simply being built here. Civilian life is being deliberately interwoven with military infrastructure. The effect is clear. Any attack on these military targets automatically poses a threat to the civilian population. Even if there is no evidence of a direct intention to use protective shields, this is precisely the de facto effect. "

Search sucks! Yeah, it does, and here's why.


 You might've heard that search sucks on software X... maybe software Y... definitely on software Z. The default one kind of sucks on NodeBB too, admittedly. But why? It's because search is really frickin' hard to get right, and expensive to get good at.

But why? It's because search is really frickin' hard to get right, and expensive to get good at.

Remember that Google started as a search company, and they became king because they got really good at it, and it was their only product (at the time, anyway!)

The easiest type of search is "full text" search. It matches words exactly based on what you type in. For example if you search lemmy it would match posts that include the word lemmy but depending on how the content was indexed, might not match lemmy.world, lemmy.ca, lemmyverse, etc.

From there you start adding complexity like supporting AND and OR. You support partial matches (lem returns posts containing lemmy and lemmings).

Add more logic to remove stop words and articles like a, the, etc.

Put in some sorting logic to rank stuff higher (what's your algo? Recency? Votes? etc.)

That's just the tip of the iceberg... this problem domain is so vast that entire companies have been built around just providing searching as a service (e.g. Algolia), and it isn't cheap!

Search also sucks because people suck.

If I post a picture of a flower with the caption "Look what grew in my garden!", that's a terrible post from a search point of view.

Later on someone will search for "flower" but I didn't use the word "flower" so now search sucks.

Of course a much more common post is someone posting a picture of text, from Twitter, Tumblr, etc. with, once again, a vague caption. You remember the picture, but not what the poster actually said.

Searching comments will sometimes help, but that depends on the comments being related.

Sunday slipped in after a late night, slightly dazed & desperately needing a quiet day.

It’s started overcast again here in deepest, darkest Yorkshire but there is talk of sunshine later.

Due to go across for a family BBQ today but spoons are low & I would much rather stay at home.

Had to have a cup of tea instead of my usual big mug of coffee - bladder considerations are now a thing, especially if I’m gonna be int he car for 2 hours last this morning.

Right I gues I aught to get a wiggle on & get my ass in gear - I should have gone for an automatic, a stick shift looks really silly on an ass!

Der #Iran ist neben #China einer der großen Waffenlieferanten für #Putin und wird nun in dieser Funktion ausfallen.
vielfach wird darauf verwiesen - und sicherlich zu Recht - dass #Israel das internationale Recht nicht beachtet. Aber ist der Iran damit schon das Opfer? Die Unterstützung Russlands ist das offensichtlichste außenpolitische Verbrechen, aber auch die Verbrechen der Sittenpolizeit, die Verstöße gegeen Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit dürfen jetzt nich vergessen werden.
Aus meiner Sicht sollten wir sollten wir hier über zwei Täter reden und beide Seiten für ihre Verbrechen verurteilen. Warum wird das unterlassen? Ist Antisemitismus wirklich keiner der gründe?

Irgendwie ist in den letzten Wochen medial so verdächtig ruhig zum Thema #noAfD. Vermutlich nutze ich die falschen Medien. Oder braut sich da wieder im Keller irgendwas zusammen? Kann auch sein, dass sie nur auf die nächsten Fehler / Skandale der aktuellen Regierungspolitik warten.

Eigentlich ist es ja ganz angenehm, wenn aus der rechtsextremen Ecke kein Gebrülle kommt. Aber irgendwie auch unheimlich, weil man weiß, dass der nächste Knall kommt.

a) Verdienen alle Menschen Respekt oder doch eher nicht?

b) Verdienen einige mehr Menschen Respekt als andere?

c) Ist der Respekt, der einigen Menschen in unserer Gesellschaft entgegengebracht wird, wirklich verdient, oder doch eher nur Resultat der Spermalotterie?

Im Klartext: Wer die meisten Menschen nicht respektiert, kann von diesen Menschen nicht fordern, dass sie bestimmte Menschen repektieren sollen, weil sie bestimmte Dinge tun ("sich aufopfern"), was sie gar nicht tun müssten, wenn alle Menschen systematisch respektiert würden, weil wir die dazu nötigen Institutionen geschaffen haben, die allgemeinen Respekt überhaupt erst ermöglichen.

Ihrer Gewalt entgegen: 10 000 Menschen demonstrieren in Jena gegen die Kriminalisierung von gesellschaftlichem Antifaschismus

Ein breites Bündnis antifaschistischer Gruppen hat zu der Demo aufgerufen. Der Demonstrationszug startete unter lauten Rufen: "Maja, #Emmi! Wir holen euch zurück! Den Kampf um Befreiung gewinnen wir Stück für Stück!", durch die Jenaer Innenstadt. Zahlreiche Gruppen haben bundesweit nach #Jena mobilisiert, um sich mit der Familie derm Jenenser Antifaschistin Maja zu solidarisieren und gegen harte Repression von Antifaschistinnen zu demonstrieren. Dabei waren auch Freundinnen und Familie von Beschuldigten vor Ort. "Kämpft für Maja, kämpft für Menschenwürde und Gerechtigkeit, seid laut und wütend gegen den Faschismus [...] gegen Gewalt [...]", so Majas Vater. Maja T. hatte sich schon im Vorfeld der heutigen Demonstration mit warmen und kraftvollen Grüßen an die Teilnehmenden gewandt.
Auf der Demonstration wurde die Rückkehr von #Maja nach Deutschland und keine weiteren Auslieferungen von Aktivist*innen in menschenunwürdige Haft nach #Ungarn gefordert.

Wir erleben seit Jahren ein Erstarken der AfD, rechter Narrative und rechtsextremer Gewalt. Das wollen wir als Zivilgesellschaft nicht zulassen und unbeantwortet hinnehmen. Antifaschismus sollte nicht kriminalisiert werden, sondern in seiner Gesamtheit als zivilgesellschaftliche Notwendigkeit verstanden werden.

Elias Engel, Pressesprecher des Bündnisses, zieht eine positive Bilanz: "Wir haben heute einen vielfältigen Antifaschismus auf der Straße gesehen: Menschen aus Jena und deutschlandweit angereiste haben getanzt und bunte Regenschirme in der Sonne gewippt. NATO recon and surveillance crafts have been non-stop over Van's airspace, southeast Turkey.

The aircraft and the strategic radar base on the high ground of the Akcadag region, dubbed Site K, are the primary reason (90%+) how Israel detects Iranian launches.
The site is far more important for the defense of Israel than the radar bases in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Meanwhile, Turkish right-wing media pretends to be neutral or even anti-Israel.

Iran carried retaliatory strikes against Israel late on Saturday night. The strikes killed 10 people, including a Palestinian family of four in Tamra and six Israelis in Bat Yam near Tel Aviv, with dozens more missing.

Iran said the strikes were in "self-defence" as a response to Israel's massive attack on the Islamic Republic's senior leadership, military bases and nuclear sites the previous day.

If there were no casualties, incalculable damage, or fear of a generalized war, I would call this a farce.

Oh well there is no hack of the red alert system contrary to reports, it malfunctioned, messages weren't sent to iPhone users.

Ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass der „Nationale Veteranentag“ mit dem #Volkstrauertag verknüpft wäre. Das hätte den VTT aufgewertet und den Vet.-Tag abgemildert.
Die Bundeswehr ist Nachfolgerin der Wehrmacht, die eine signifikante Mitschuld an der Nazi-Sch…e hat. Die Mehrheit der BBürger war gegen den Einsatz in Afghanistan. Demnächst gibt es hier auch noch ne Militärparade. Nee, Danke!

Der Volkstrauertag hat mit der Bundeswehr nichts zu tun.

Die BRD war bereits Mitglied der NATO, noch bevor es die Bundeswehr gab, da kann man kaum Vergleiche mit der Wehrmacht ziehen.

Die Bundeswehr ist eine Parlaments- Armee, also hat ein von der Mehrheit der Bürgerinnen und Bürger gewähltes Parlament über den Afghanistan Einsatz entschieden.

Beides geschah 1955. Kein signifikant großer zeitlicher Abstand…

Und etwa 40 bis 50 ehemalige Wehrmachtsgeneräle dienten später in der B-Wehr. Das wäre etwa 1/5 der heutigen Anzahl. Das ist nicht nichts.

Ich bin nicht gegen die Bundeswehr, nur gegen den Veteranentag.

Hinweis auf die NATO war so gemeint, dass es der BRD wichtig war, Teil dieses Bündnisses war, noch bevor die Bw gegründet wurde. Teil eines Bündnisses sein wollen ist anders als die Bedrohung der Wehrmacht im 2. Weltkrieg. Klar waren da auch alte Soldaten dabei, die Entnazifizierung war wahrscheinlich genauso gründlich wie bei Richtern, Lehrkräften, Polizei, Beamten, etc. Kritik verstehe ich, widerspricht aber nicht einem Gedenktag.

@Corinna Ich respektiere das.
Aber ich gehöre zur letzten Generation, die, wenn auch als Kind und Teenagerin, noch die letzten Kriegsversehrten bewusst im Berliner Straßenbild gesehen und beobachtet hat.
Ich kann mich noch an die Sakkos mit den hochgesteckten Ärmeln erinnern. Das war für uns Kinder normal.
Das sollte nicht wieder normal werden. Verteidigung von DE und EU ja, aber keine deutschen „Grenzen am Hindukusch“.

nein Danke ja ich war beim Bund aber so ein Tag ist einfach Symbolpolitik um nicht handeln zu müssen.

1. Verbessert das Gesundheitssystem damit die Veteranen ein gutes haben
2, Verbessert die Sozialsysteme damit die Veteranen wenn sie es brauchen ein gutes haben.
3. Helft den Menschen die unseren Veteranen im Einsatz geholfen haben denn zukünftige Soldaten im Einsatz sind auf die Hilfe der Bevölkerung angewiesen.
