I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's fascist attempt to "own" the military have led to both cultural conflict inside (hence, low morale) and friction between them and civvies across the country.

The crazy part is that if Trump had just, like, *pretended* to care about basically *anything*, he probably could have gotten the military to do whatever he wanted.

This is why I'm so grateful that US fascists are so profoundly incompetent and incurious.

An Al Jazeera report about the deadly shootings at US-Israeli aid distribution centres in Gaza describes them as “bait” being used to “lure” starving aid seekers in the “sport of hunting”.

At least 245 Palestinians have been killed while desperately trying to secure food parcels for their families from the US and Israeli-led food distribution centres, which have been branded as “human slaughterhouses” by UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese since they began operating on 27 May.

Al Jazeera reporter Majed Abdul Hadi says those who are complicit in the killings “deny their involvement when bullets are fired into their empty bellies and skulls cracked from extreme hunger”.

Abdul Hadi says desperate parents are left with no other choice but to risk their lives for aid and “crowd around the bait set out to trap them” as they watch their children starve “despite knowing full well that the hunters are poised to shoot”.

Gut. Gekauft. Die Annahme dahinter ist aber, dass es auch ohne demokratischen Weltstaat irgendwie einigermeßen gut ginge.

Und mit dieser Annahme entsteht Demokratie tatsächlich nicht. Denn Demokratie entsteht erkennbar aus Einsicht in ihre Notwendigkeit. Sie ist nämlich extrem aufwändig, und extrem aufwändige Dinge tun wir Menschen nicht, wenn es auch anders geht.

Ginge es ohne Demokratie, könnten wir das von mir aus gerne machen. Es ist einfacher, bequemer und naheliegender.

Das Problem ist aber leider, dass es für uns Menschen vollkommen unmöglich und ausgeschlossen ist, dass wir die Herstellung katastrophaler Zustande für uns selbst und durch uns selbst vermeiden könnten, wenn wir keine Demokratie praktzieren.

Demokratie ist also eine bittere Notwendigkeit. Ein Realismus. Kein Idealismus, wie oft irrtümlich gedacht wird.

Würden aristokratische Formen funktionieren, wäre ich Fan von aristokratischen Formen.

Der Witz an der Aristokratie ist aber eben: Sie funktioniert nie.

Sie ist zwar der Zustand, der sich von alleine herstellt, der aber in keiner Hinsicht gut für uns ist. (übrigens auch nicht für die Oberschicht selber)

Auch hieran sieht man den "Realismus" der Demokratie: Sie geht gerade nicht von einer "harmonischen" Welt aus, in der alles "von ganz alleine gut wird".

Genau da tut die Aristokratie...

...in ihrem ganz eigenen Idealismus. Den gibt es btw. von links genauso wie von rechts, nur sieht er dann jeweils sehr unterschiedlich aus und hat in den ersten Schritten (!) sehr unterschiedliche Folgen.

Gemeinsam ist aber allen idealistischen, aristokratischen Ansätzen, dass der Aufwand an Politik stets nur so gering gedacht wird, dass er "realistischerweise" von wenigen erbracht werden kann: Eben vom Adel, von den Wenigen, von "den Besten".

Realistisch ist, dass gute Selbstverwaltung komplexer menschlicher Gesellschaften nur möglich ist, wenn sich alle regelmäßig aktiv an ihr beteiligen.

Idealistisch ist hingegen die Annahme, dass gute Verwaltung komplexer menschlicher Gesellschaften so einfach sei, dass sie von wenigen, "gut gebildeten", ganz besonders klugen, weisen, wohlmeinenden, und was Aristokraten sonst noch alles einfällt, Individuen geleistet werden könnte.

Es gibt auch realistischen Pazifismus. Er besteht nicht aus schönen Sonntagsreden über die wunderbare Natur des Menschen, oder darüber, dass die ganze Gewalt und Grausamkeit, die regelmäßig von uns ausgeht, nur ein großes Missverständnis oder ein Unfall oder ein Versehen wäre, oder auf den "bösen Willen" von ein paar wenigen "Teufeln" unter uns zurückginge, die uns angeblich "verderben".

Ich weiß, ich war selbst sehr überrascht, als ich diesen realistischen Pazifismus entdeckt habe. 🤷🏽

@violetmadder if so they severely underestimate just how many skilled people and stuff from all over the world you need to make a modern computer. Unless a digital god running on ancient hardware that cannot be replaced is the goal ... frankly, in a plus 4 deg C world, pretty shells are a much better proposition for money than anything that needs an Internet to be feasible.

Und auch, was Krieg mit Menschen macht, die ihn bereits erlebt haben. (Ukraine)

Nimmt man beides zusammen, erscheint es nahezu unglaublich, dass wir Menschen nicht unendlich viel mehr darin investieren, Frieden stabil herzustellen, sondern einfach erwarten, "dass von ganz alleine einfach Frieden ist".

Ignoring #COVID19's risk to kids has ramifications. While chronic school absenteeism has declined a bit since 2022 (when we had the giant Omicron surge), it remains 50% above the levels seen before the pandemic.

Here's an interesting chart (form @adamtooze chartbook blog) which identifies where CEOs of global corporations come from (their previous jobs); so if you needed some (more) evidence on the cultural shape of the global economic elite this is going to be some help.

So, if you wondered why so many global corporations seem to adopt a similar strategic playbook, the role of consultancies in shaping CEOs outlook, looks like a good bet.

Don't confuse someone just saying that something has happened or is happening for that someone saying that something is good or bad, or that they are somehow responsible for the thing happening.

As someone who often toots about things happening in the world I do sometimes get angry responses unmistakably aimed at me for that thing happening and I see the same aimed at others in the same circumstance too.
Seeing that happen at someone else again recently is why I write this now.

As an illustration: Imagine if a meteorologist on TV tells you that there is a hurricane causing or about to cause devastation. They did not decide that there should be a hurricane and just for saying there is/will be one they aren't saying it is in their opinion a good thing.

There are often good reasons to be angry about events happening in the world, but direct it at the actual cause(s), driving possibility for change, and not just at someone telling you about there being something that you are angry about while they are as powerless against it as you are.

Ich hätte da schon auch ein paar spezifische Fragen zum weltpolitischen Geschehen, aber man kriegt ja dann eher weniger nachdenkliche, informative, evidenzbasierte Beiträge als vielmehr Beschimpfungen als Oberlehrer, Parteisoldat, Kriegstreiber&Verharmloser (gleichzeitig), Linksextremer&Rechtsextremer (gleichzeitig), Feigling und noch ein paar andere, die ich gerade vergessen habe, die ich aber heute schon sehr geschätzten Menschen in meiner Timeline an den Kopf geworfen gesehen habe.
