By now you've probably seen this unedited footage of Trump's birthday parade with the mostly empty bleachers so quiet that all you can hear is the squeaking of the tank.
And as funny as this is, I want to call your attention to another aspect of this that seems to have not been reported on so widely - and that is how utterly joyless MAGA people and gatherings are.
I live in Seattle, where the No Kings protest was basically a non-stop party in Cal Anderson Park all day long. There were musicians, dancers, performers, my god people put on fully acted PLAYS about Lady Liberty beating the shit out of "King" Donald. People were laughing and singing and chanting. There were jokes told, some people were handing out free snacks and bottled water. It was a party! No, strike that, it was a HANGOUT. It was like hanging out with 50,000 of your best friends.
Now, watch the clip I posted again. Look at the people in the stands. Really LOOK. Zoom in if you have to. They're TIRED. They're wet, they're exhausted, some of them are angry. Most of them are just standing there immobile, miserably filming the one tank driving past them on their mobile phone as some droning voice gives them instructions about how to spend money at Coinbase from offscreen. There's no music. There's no laughter. There's no JOY.
This is Trump's America. A joyless, artless tiresome wet blanket filled with the squeaking of tank treads and the cold sound of boots on asphalt.
I keep saying it but they keep continuing to prove it true - these people are immune to satire. Satire relies on hyperbole - the ability to take something that's real and extrapolate it out to the point of absurdist humor. The trouble is, there is no scenario so hyperbolic, no caricature so unhinged, that these people won't just immediately take on board and make real. In a million years I could never have come up with satire as scathing as a president throwing himself his own Kim Jong Un style military birthday parade that literally nobody attended with squeaky tank treads echoing through a silent pavilion as a few dozen miserable onlookers stand glumly in the cold and rain. That's just pathetic in a way that sounds fictional.
It's never made sense to me that some people refuse to drink water even if they know it keeps you functioning properly. The same people will complain of constipation or dry skin but don't want to do the thing that fixes their issues.

Nextcloud file storage is pretty powerful. It handles folders, you can favorite files and folders to get back to them easily, you can tag anything you like, you can share anything either with selected people, or with a public link, you can even add comments to any file, and it supports versioning as well to restore older versions if you want.
On top of that, you can also mount that storage as webdav, in any good file manager. On Linux, with GNOME and KDE, this happens automatically when you configure a nextcloud account in the online accounts settings.
And of course, you have a desktop client that lets you sync files either from a Nextcloud folder, or even from outside that folder, to make sure your files are where you want them.
Syncthing isn't exactly cloud storage, it doesn't store files on a cloud server, it just syncs them from one computer to the other, in real time. So you setup syncthing on your laptop and your desktop, and it will send files back and forth between both devices, without any intermediary in between.
If you're already a ProtonMail customer, you might just want to look at Proton Drive.
It's an end to end encrypted solution, hosted in Switzerland, with relatively strong privacy laws, that don't really matter since everything is encrypted anyways, it's not like someone could look at what you stored, since files are encrypted on your device before being sent to the cloud.
It's also open source, and it obviously integrates well with the other Proton tools, like Mail or Calendar. Even though it's encrypted, you can still share files with others without file size limits, as well as password protect files, define expiration dates for links, and more.
Another open source alternative is Cozy Cloud. It's available for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, and it gives you 5GB for free, with additional tiers at 50Gigs for 2 euros 99 per month, and 1TB for 9 euros 98. Still more expensive than Google, but also more private.
It also has auto import features from your phone camera roll to your drive, and can also automatically import certain documents from more than 100 providers, like your bills, health refunds, bank statements, and more, if you want.
pCloud is an option I used extensively in the past for all my cloud storage. It's not open source, but it has optional encryption features if you want to make sure that you're the only one that can look at your stuff. They're on the affordable side, with 500Gigs costing you 50 euros per year, or about 4 euros per month, and 2 terabytes for 100 euros a year, or a bit more than 8 euros per month.
If what you need is massive storage space and you don't want to self host, then I think Mega is your only option. Their base plans are more expensive than others, at 5 euros per month for 400 Gigs, but they can go up to 16Tb for 30 euros per month, which is a LOT of storage for not that much money, considering. The 2TB plan is on par with other options, at 10 euros per month.
And I can't conclude this video without mentioning Zoho. If you don't really care all that much about privacy or open source, but you still want to ditch big tech, then Zoho is probably your best bet. they have replacements for EVERYTHING google does, and a lot more on top of that, and prices are relatively inexpensive.

Single core, 32 bit CPU, can't even do video playback on VLC. But it kinda works for some offline work, like text editing, and even emulation through zsnes! It's crazy how Linux keeps old hardware like this running.
Thankfully though, this laptop CPU is upgradable, and so is the ram, so I'm planning on revitalizing and bringing this old Itautec to the 21st century 😄
I remember when computers had no memory and the storage was on punch cards made from mammoth leather that we had to tan ourselves after spending our weekends hunting the mammoth with spears. Also we carved our code by hand on stone tablets. Young people these days have it easy.
It's not that bad. I run Linux on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, which is much weaker than this. (It's not a competition, though. Just saying.) And that's also a pretty standard device. I'm kinda interested to see if anyone can go below 64M RAM with a modern installation.
I booted Buildroot with kernel 5.17 on a Pentium II laptop off a CD I burned once - I needed to dump a drive once and that was the only hardware I had on hand that could dump 2.5” IDE drives and had a working CD drive so I could boot something other than the operating system installed on the drive.
Edit: im exagerating but I really have 20-yr 32-bit Dell laptops running minimal debian linux. and my current laptop is 10+ yrs old Lenovo which I already replaced its screen, rams, keyboard, bluetooth, usb ports... and it's still working flawlessly for daily tasks, video/music editing, coding and programming, internet browsing 😁

I‘ve just finished the incredible „The Dawn of Everything“ by David Graeber —@DGI — and David Wengrow in the German version called „Anfänge“. Such a powerful book that I highly recommend to anyone interested in #solarpunk. Realising that our current systems are not a given. That another world has always been possible throughout history. It put a bright smile on my face time and time again.
I first saw it here on Mastodon, I followed the developer as I was intrigued by the visuals. I added it to my wishlist some time ago and now finally bought it. There's so much to play at the moment but I hope I will get round it soon.
I don't normally play point and click adventure games, but I found the graphical style of this one interesting, so I bought it. Neofeud has good music, rememberable characters and almost too many cultural references. It hooked me with its unique setting, fleshed-out lore and a refreshing story with twists. It was an entertaining 10 hours and now I am waiting for Neofeud 2.
Neofeud is a Dystopic Cyberpunk adventure game in the vein of Blade Runner, but with an overlay of Game of Thrones-like political intrigue, and 1366x768, hand-painted, stylized visuals.

I decided to pass on the HUGE demonstration in downtown San Diego (estimated at 61,000) and went to Del Mar/Sorrento Valley because I knew it would be smaller The Hands Off demonstration I attended in April was way too intense for me, even though it was joyous. It was a good decision. I participated, I was welcomed by strangers and we were supported by 99% of the passersby. This is what democracy looks like. Gray but still involved.

Cliff swallow nests by the well-known Chaco 1054 Supernova rock art panel. Chinese records indicate July 4 1054 as when this "guest star" appeared, when the moon was nearly at first quarter. This supernova created the Crab Nebula. Halley's Comet appeared in 1066. Western San Juan Basketmaker-style anthropomorphic forms along the San Juan river (~1,000 BCE - ~400 CE). Forms are roughly life-size. The figure on the right may be wearing a mask. Some of those who see these forms as shamanic theorize the hanging feet represent an altered state. Raft trips out of Bluff, Utah stop at this panel.
This exceptional Barrier Canyon Style painting (~2000 BCE or earlier - ~400 CE) is being covered up by calcium carbonate. Most BCS anthropomorphic forms are missing arms or legs as if wearing a robe but these forms even have fingers. The companion birds and snakes are a common feature of this style. Seeing rock art I haven't seen before is always a highlight for me, so I was happy to finally see this one. Some archaeologist refer to this figure as a wading bird but it is generally known as the Crane Panel. Ancestral Puebloan, southeastern Utah, ~3 ft./1m tall.
