Am I the only one who thinks social media has destroyed the spirit of the internet?

The emergence of social media has destroyed all the small communities to standardize communication and information.

It's a bit of a digital version of rural exodus. And since 2017/2018, I've noticed that everything that, in my opinion, represented the internet has disappeared.

I've known Lemmy for a few hours and I feel like I'm back in the early spirit of the internet.

I found the solution to this problem with the keyboard not working on some ThinkPad laptops after upgrading to Windows 11. It is solved by turning off "Fast Boot".

Snappy Driver Installer (SDI) also does not work. It finds a bunch of drivers and chipsets to update and does, but the problem remains.

I also don't think it is a driver issue, as it works fine after a reboot. Something about "cold booting" Windows just is exactly wrong to keep the keyboard from working at all in Windows.

This only happens in Windows, so probably is a Windows bug or purposeful defect. It does not happen in Linux.

The keyboard will not work at all, but if the laptop is restarted the keyboard will work fine until the next time it is powered on.

Happens with both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Mostly on ThinkPad models with Intel 6th and 7th generation processors: ThinkPad T560, T470s, et cetera.

Anyone know what causes this? Or what a fix would be?

This is still a huge issue for me. Now it is happening on a ThinkPad T580 with Intel 8th generation CPU.

Only way to get the keyboard working again is to restart Windows. It will not work from a cold boot.

Updating drivers and Intel chipset does not fix the issue. It is a software issue, as the problem does not happen in Linux.

If anyone has experience with a fix, please share.

If you lower the criteria of terrorism to the point where it covers spray painting aeroplanes & claim that this is 'terrorising' military personal then I think we can safely say what you're really trying to do is halt almost any protest.

By all means call it criminal damage, but to invoke terrorism & to deploy anti-terrorism police to catch the protestors is just as much a threat to democracy as that represented by the actions of Donald Trump.

This is not good!

Training Young People to Memorize and Not to Reason

In 1990, Marilyn vos Savant answered a math question that made the world erupt.

At the time, she was known for one astonishing fact: her IQ was 228—the highest ever recorded. She had read all 24 volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica by age 10, and later became the face of Parade Magazine’s “Ask Marilyn” column.

Then came the Monty Hall Problem:

You’re on a game show with 3 doors. Behind one is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door. The host opens one of the remaining doors, revealing a goat.
Do you switch?

Marilyn said, yes—you should switch.

The backlash? Brutal.

Over 10,000 letters flooded in. Nearly 1,000 were from PhDs—most telling her she was wrong.
“You are the goat!” one wrote.
“Maybe women just don’t understand probability,” another said.

But Marilyn was right.

Switching gives you a 2/3 chance of winning.
Staying? Only 1/3.

It took MIT simulations, TV shows like MythBusters, and countless professors to finally admit—she saw what they couldn’t.

Why did so many get it wrong?

Because the math felt wrong. The problem was simple—but our intuition isn’t built for probability. And because she was a woman, many ignored the logic and attacked the person.

Marilyn later said the real issue wasn’t math. It was how we teach thinking.
“Schools discourage independent thought,” she said. “We’re trained to memorize—not to reason.”

She still sees her gift as a blessing. But in a world that feared her brilliance, it was also a burden.
