Stephen Miller’s Financial Stake in #ICE Contractor #Palantir Raises #Conflict Concerns

#Miller, who served as President Donald #Trump’s senior advisor on #immigration and homeland #security, disclosed owning between $100,001 and $250,000 of Palantir stock as of mid-March, according to financial disclosure forms obtained by the watchdog group. #Ethics experts told POGO that Miller’s dual role crafting enforcement policy and investing in Palantir, which provides “mission-critical” data services for ICE, could amount to a troubling conflict of interest.

‘FuckLAPD.com’ Lets Anyone Use Facial Recognition to Instantly Identify Cops

A new site, FuckLAPD.com, is using public records and facial recognition technology to allow anyone to identify police officers in Los Angeles they have a picture of. The tool, made by artist Kyle McDonald, is designed to help people identify cops who may otherwise try to conceal their identity, such as covering their badge or serial number.

“We deserve to know who is shooting us in the face even when they have their badge covered up,” McDonald told me when I asked if the site was made in response to police violence during the LA protests against ICE that started earlier this month. “fucklapd.com is a response to the violence of the LAPD during the recent protests against the horrific ICE raids. And more broadly—the failure of the LAPD to accomplish anything useful with over $2B in funding each year.”

“Cops covering up their badges? ID them with their faces instead,” the site, which McDonald said went live this Saturday. The tool allows users to upload an image of a police officer’s face to search over 9,000 LAPD headshots obtained via public record requests. The site says image processing happens on the device, and no photos or data are transmitted or saved on the site. “Blurry, low-resolution photos will not match,” the site says.

fucklapd.com uses data provided by the City of Los Angeles directly to the public,” McDonald told me in an email. “This data has been provided in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits. That means all of this information belongs to the public and is a matter of public record. fucklapd.com is not scraping any data.”

In addition to potentially identifying officers by name and serial number, FuckLAPD.com also pulls up a police officer’s salary.

“Surprisingly it [the domain name] only costs $10 a year to exercise my first amendment right to say fucklapd.com,” McDonald said.
playlist.megaphone.fm?p=TBIEA2…
I tested the tools by grabbing an image of a white and bald police officer from an LAPD press conference addressing its use of force during the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. I uploaded the image to the site, and within a few seconds the site presented me with nine headshots of officers who could be possible matches, all of them bald white men. The first correctly identified the cop in the image I uploaded.

Clicking “view profile” under the result sent me to the Watch the Watchers site by the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, a community group based in the Skid Row neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles. “All of the information on this website comes from records that were deliberately made public by the City of Los Angeles in response to either public records requests or public records lawsuits,” the Watch the Watchers site says. “We plan to keep refreshing this data from new public records requests as well as to add other data.” Stop LAPD Spying Coalition is not associated with FuckLAPD.com and did not endorse the site.

McDonald told me that since the site launched, it had around 50,000 visitors, but “Because the analysis happens on-device I have no way of knowing what people are using it for, except for some people who have posted screenshots to Twitter or Instagram,” he said.

In 2018 McDonald made another tool called ICEspy which used hundreds of photos of ICE employees from LinkedIn and does much the same thing as FuckLAPD.com. “This app is designed to highlight and embarrass the organization committing atrocities against refugees and immigrants to the United States,” ICEspy’s website says. That tool originally used a Microsoft API, before Microsoft restricted access to it. McDonald said on X that he recently relaunched the tool to run locally on devices. 404 Media tested ICEspy using images of ICE employees on LinkedIn to verify if the tool worked and each result was incorrect; McDonald indicated on X he was looking for others to re-scrape LinkedIn and update the database.

Over the last few months ICE officers have consistently worn masks, neck gaiters, sunglasses, and baseball caps to shield their identity while often refusing to provide their name or even confirm the agency they belong to. This includes while violently assaulting people, detaining U.S. citizens, and pointing weapons at bystanders, leaving little room for recourse or accountability against the individual agents or the agency.

ICE’s constant use of masks has created a climate where people cannot be sure that the heavily armed group of men coming towards them are really federal agents or not. In Philadelphia, a man pretended to be an ICE agent in order to rob an auto repair shop and zip tie an employee. In Brooklyn, a man posed as an immigration officer before attempting to rape a woman.

ICE claims that assaults against its officers have increased by 413 percent, and use this as the justification for covering their faces. But as Philip Bump showed in the Washington Postthere are still plenty of questions about those numbers and their accuracy. ICE says its officers’ family members have been doxed too.

Neither the LAPD or ICE responded to a request for comment.

i voted for the money. I consider myself intelligent enough to do the job i'm doing. I've never run into a problem where I felt "If I was just a bit more intelligent I could do this". I've never found something impossible for me to learn, even if it takes some effort to learn it. So, I think if I were twice as intelligent, I would perhaps have more genius insights or figure things out faster, but twice as much money would let me buy a house and have a much more stable life, which would be better for my wellbeing than being a prodigious genius, which might well make me more depressed than I currently am.

I do attend Bible study run by a conservative local pastor but with people from variety of traditions & that's what makes study interesting & lively, because we all take Bible seriously even if we do not always agree.

Rural resident so churches are quite geographically spread out. I've tried around seven different churches over the years but not found a permanent home. I'm stuck being a lone ranger Christian. Not the way it is supposed to be....but the way it is.

in reply to elston_

@elston_ -- I can relate though! The debates between denominations confused me for years and were a large part of why I steered clear.

When first learning about Orthodoxy, I was quite struck by idea that it's "predenominational". So when I became intensely Christian-curious and wanted community, I figured I'd start at the root of it all and go from there. Ends up Orthodox theology and biblical interpretation are the first that have made sense to me and seemed internally consistent. 🤷‍♀️

For me, conservative Lutheranism shows fidelity to Word while not necessarily rejecting all tradition- only that which makes void the Word of God.

But embracing infant baptism is a tricky one for me. I would even point to rite of "confirmation" as a tacit admission by Western churches that practice infant baptism, that some kind of real faith & commitment is needed from the individual at some point in spiritual journey.

Calvinism & its daughters I strongly dislike.

– I've also had many questions about baptism, especially for infants!

I barely dare try to articulate my feeble grasp/why I'm comfortable with it now. It's only come through just starting to understand, and personally experiencing, how the holy traditions of the church–baptism, liturgy, Eucharist, confession–combine to gently orient a soul towards God; and, at the same time, each person themselves chooses to maintain that orientation, even after being baptized at whatever age.

@Haleakalacrater
If baptism is a gift of God to church & one it can in turn give to children, that helps us see it in a different light.

If human parents give gifts to infants & toddlers, without demanding they be old enough to write a thank you letter then why can't God through church bring baptism to infants & children?

When it talks about whole households being baptized in NT that *could* include infants. But text doesn't give us clear indication that it does.

My poor kitty Lola. She still poops on the floor, which is semi-manageable now because I place puppy pads next to the litterbox. She also has blood in her urine. She's had 2 rounds of antibiotics and her culture is bacteria-free, so she has "idiopathic cystitis," ie no known cause. The vet suggests I give her Gabapentin to "manage stress," and I guess I'll try it, but I doubt the cause is "stress." I'm considering that the cats got Covid from me in 2023, when I was completely bed-bound for 4 weeks and sick for months, and that may be the source of their autoimmune disease too (they both have IBD) and complications. Which means, not much to be done. They're already both on prednisone for IBD, which shortens their lives all by itself. We (meaning my Mom, they're her cats too) have spent a lot of money on teats and treatments and vet visits, and some point need to stop and let the inevitable occur. My poor kitty.

Here's a pic of her cooling off on the floor under the ceiling fan yesterday.

A for long-term prospects, my primary doc is approaching back surgery #8, and gets around better than I do, so there may be hope. I just want to make it to Medicare age before they take that away.

My takeaway from my years in Greece:
- siesta is a must. You will catch up, waking early morning, when it is (relatively) cool.
- "space" aka SOS blanket, glued (even with tap water) on the outside surface of the glass, silver side to the sun, will protect interior from heating up.
- use shades and ventillation in a smart way.

Dodge Fines: Key Compliance Errors to Avoid in Singapore

Handling compliance yourself may save money initially, but mistakes like wrong filings or missed deadlines are common without expertise. Correcting errors can be costly.

Singapore's business environment is structured, but compliance mistakes can lead to costly fines, especially for small companies. Many errors are avoidable with awareness and organization. Below are the top compliance pitfalls and how to sidestep them.

Meet Filing Deadlines

One of the most frequent mistakes is missing ACRA annual returns or IRAS tax filing deadlines. These are non-negotiable, and delays trigger penalties.

Annual returns are due within seven months of the financial year-end. Tax returns must be filed by November. Repeated misses can escalate to legal action. Track deadlines with reminders or use corporate secretarial services to stay compliant.

Appoint a Company Secretary

Every Singapore company must have a qualified company secretary within six months of incorporation. This role manages compliance tasks like filings, resolutions, and record updates.

Not appointing a secretary or using someone unqualified can lead to fines. Secretarial services can take on this role if your team is short on time or expertise.

Inform ACRA of Changes

Changes like new directors, address updates, or share issuances must be reported to ACRA, usually within 14 days. Failing to notify risks fines or director liability if records don't align with reality.

Report changes to your secretary or service provider promptly to maintain compliance.

Prioritize Record-Keeping

Singapore law requires companies to keep records, including shareholder and director registers, meeting minutes, and resolutions. Startups often neglect this, thinking it's low priority. Missing records can complicate audits or funding rounds, and ACRA can issue penalties.

Designate someone to manage records or rely on secretarial services to keep them organized.

Clarify AGM Requirements

Private companies can avoid Annual General Meetings if they send financial statements to shareholders within five months of the financial year-end. If this doesn't happen, an AGM is mandatory. Misunderstanding this can lead to compliance issues.

Check your AGM obligations with your secretary annually to avoid errors.

File Taxes, Even With No Income

A common myth is that companies without profit don't need to file tax returns. All companies, even dormant ones, must submit annual returns to IRAS. Skipping this can lead to fines or deregistration.

Consult an accountant or corporate secretarial services to ensure timely filings, including for zero-income returns.

Use a Compliant Address

Your company needs a Singapore address, accessible three hours daily on business days. An unsuitable address or failing to update it can result in missed notices and fines.

Corporate secretarial services often provide compliant registered address options for businesses without a physical office.

Avoid DIY Compliance Pitfalls

Handling compliance yourself may save money initially, but mistakes like wrong filings or missed deadlines are common without expertise. Correcting errors can be costly.

Secretarial services ensure compliance is done right, saving time and reducing risks.

Stay Compliant, Stay Fine-Free

Singapore's rules are straightforward but require diligence. Fines often come from minor oversights. Regularly check your filings and records, and consider corporate secretarial services for support.

Proactive compliance keeps your business safe from penalties.
