Bad issues with system load on Mint Desktop

Hi!. Currently running Linux Mint 22.1, but i suspect it's not strictly a distro issue. This laptop was running VERY well but was outdated, running Mint 19.3, some things were unable to be installed because the system libraries were old (didn't expect Calibre to be one of them, figures), so i updated all the way to that moment's current version which was Mint 21.3. All of a sudden it felt like the laptop got downgraded two whole computer tech generations. As soon as i ask it to do something mildly complicated that made it break no sweat on Mint 19, it gets VERY slow, all the cores start running at max, system load increases, until it finishes doing whatever it was doing several minutes later, something between a couple of minutes when lucky, to 20 or more. Typically what triggers the issue is something on the browser (what i use the most on the computer is browser tabs and lots of terminals) but not exclusively. Thought it was the browser but replicated it on an empty Firefox profile, and has triggered with simpler stuff like the Discord client. Been trying to find the issue for a while trying to avoid a full reinstall, no luck so far.

If i were to describe how it feels, it's like there was a bottleneck on tasks being done by the system, as soon as you ask it to do something mildly complex it chokes on it and tasks accumulate. No idea if it's some kind of kernel misconfiguration, if it's some hardware incompatibility, or something else entirely, checking the changelogs of Mint all the way between 19.3 and 21.3 showed nothing i could pin this onto (or at least nothing i could notice).

The nuclear option would be a brand new blank install but I'd MUCH rather avoid that if possible, made the comfortable but now unwise choice of a single partition for everything (instead of a separate /home and whatnot as i used to do) so reinstallation would wipe it completely, if i must then i must but much rather not.

Would welcome VERY much ideas on stuff to check or try.

Edit: It's got an NVME drive, which seems to be healthy as far as i can see

Edit: When it happens it doesn't seem to matter how much RAM is free, seen it happen with only 8 of the 32Gb of RAM in use and zero swap

Edit: Found a great way to describe how it feels like: Have you done heavy video encoding on a computer that's adequate for the task but not more than that, and noticed how everything in it stalls heavily, even if there's plenty of RAM free and the computer feels like it's giving everything to that task only? Pretty much that, but for nearly everything even moderately heavy

Given that as i mentioned elsewhere i did not separate the /home into it's own partition like I've been doing since the 90s, formatting this thing right now would likely lead to losing stuff, i need to organize the files first before i do the nuclear option: A full reformat/reinstall. If that makes no difference in the end, I'll have to consider the possibility of getting a new one. No idea how long will each step take so not the foggiest on when will i do each thing, and that's even without taking procrastination into consideration... 😅

Dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche, les Etats-Unis ont bombardé plusieurs sites nucléaires iraniens. Soit un acte de belligérance dans une guerre débutée par Israël de manière surprise, dans la nuit du 12 au 13 juin, par des bombardements multiples sur Téhéran et d’autres cibles alentours. Des manœuvres qui, faut-il seulement le rappeler, se sont déployées en dépit complet du droit international.

The war on Iran is just another phase of the war on multi-polarity. The hegemonic empire must crush any competition. This is the same war against Russia, China and any and all rivals.

The west, namely the US calculates that if she can disrupt the government and people of Iran, she will expose the vulnerabilities of Russia. She may be right at that, so it is imperative that the target nations move in unison to counter her offensives.

I like the idea, but how do we keep an IP going from provider to provider? IPs are even more fragile than domains and changing that fact seems near impossible.

Instead, couldn’t a trusted nonprofit (say @eff or ISRG) buy a gTLD from ICANN, become a registrar and rent out domains at (very close to) self-cost with no insane price hikes? Picture what ISRG did with @letsencrypt, but for domains.

Running costs for this would currently be a fixed fee of US$6,250 per calendar quarter and a transaction fee of US$0.25[1]. These costs could be split on all registrants.

Some would probably say that .org is the answer, but the PIR drama in 2020[2] shows how fragile this system is. We *need* a TLD that doesn’t need to be saved by the @eff from hostile takeovers.

Imagine: more registrants would mean lower prices. That’s far from how gTLDs function now. A sudden spike in interest could introduce a sudden price increase.

@mikael @eff Migration can be built at the app layer (Kitten already supports it natively for all apps created with it). Both servers would have to be online for a period of time to allow people’s address books time to update.

I do like your non-commercial TLD idea too. Would love to see that and it would be a nice complementary tool. Could easily be done as an EU-funded project if the political will was there.

(Basically, that was/is what I was hacking at the second-level domain level using the Public Suffix List until this latest Let’s Encrypt development.)

ETA: quote attributed to Brazilian environmentalist and trade union leader Chico Mendes (1944–1988). In Portuguese: "Ecologia sem luta de classes é jardinagem".

Ce matin, j‘ai tondu l’herbe dans le jardin. Cette herbe que je croyais indescriptible mais dont je veux partager avec vous la description qu’en fait Victor Hugo dans l’Archipel de la Manche : « C’est l’herbe de partout… vous y trouverai des fétuques et des pâturins comme dans la première herbe venue, plus le cynodon pied-de-poule et la glycérie flottante, plus le brome mollet aux épillets en fuseau, plus le phalaris des Canaries, l’agrostide qui donne une teinture verte, l’ivraie ray-grass, le lupin jaune, la houlque, qui a de la laine sur sa tige, la flouve qui sent bon, l’amourette qui tremble, le souci pluvial, l’ail sauvage, dont la fleur est si douce et l’odeur si âcre, la fléole, le vulpin, dont l’épi semble une petite massue, le stipe, propre à faire des paniers, l’élyme utile à fixer les sables mouvants. … »
Je m’arrête là, ce n’est pas la dictée de Pivot mais je précise que la description continue, toute aussi détaillée concernant les fleurs et les insectes, aussi imagée et riche en vocabulaire. En lisant cela on s’aperçoit de l’effondrement de la connaissance qui ne concerne plus que les "zexperts". À l’époque (1883) ils n’avaient ni Google, ni Wikipédia mais ils savaient les choses. Une image vaut mille mots dit-on, mais à force d’en voir tant, on devient aveugle. Le siècle qui est le nôtre s’est enfoncé dans un gouffre d’ignorance. Il n’y a qu’à écouter les réponses d’élèves interrogés en micro-trottoir sur la manière qu’ils ont eu d’aborder les sujets de dissertation proposés pour leur dissertation de philo, pour constater le vide abyssal qui a envahi nos cervelles d’HPE « surdoués ».
À force d’images TikTok, on ne sait plus parler. L’appauvrissement du vocabulaire mène à des descriptions sommaires : ça va, ça/va pas, gentil/méchant, triste/gai, positif/négatif. Cette lecture réduite des problématiques entraîne une vision sommaire du monde d'où des grossièretés et des insultes, faute de moyen (d’expression). Résultat : on se poignarde dans la cour des écoles, on se bat en famille, on se défonce à mourir, ou l’on quitte la table des négociations parce qu’on s’y ennuie. La diplomatie ? La diplo quoi ? Toujours le même millier de mots répétés en boucle, ou larguer soudain un G9 pour rentrer chez soi en compagnie de sa bande de béotiens en bredouillant qu’on a « autre chose à faire », sous-entendu que de discuter avec des subalternes indécis et confus, des chefs de pseudo grands états, mais qu’on toise d’un regard méprisant…
Notre monde se précipite vers sa fin devant les caméras. Face à l’ignorance crasse des dictateurs, n’y a-t-il d’autre issue que d’espérer se faire promptement remplacer par une Intelligence Artificielle à qui l'on accorde tous les crédits ?
Nous vivons une ère ténébreuse qui ne s’éclaire la nuit que lorsque les missiles du dôme de fer interceptent roquettes / bombes longues portées venues de l’étranger…
Alors, j’ai replié le journal, et je suis retourné m’allonger dans l’herbe pour lire Victor l’exilé…

Ok miod, t'as raison peut être même sur les deux tableaux, mais n'empêche que le billet de CharlElie est bien senti quand même ! Ah les cervelles d'HPE surdoués, sont surtout dotées des égos surdimensionnés de leurs parents, hein 😀 Notre monde ne court pas à sa perte, il s'y rend en trottinette nucléaire ! Parce que la biodiversité semble avoir aussi sacrément chuté aussi depuis d'Hugo a écrit ce texte... En pleine nature, où je suis pourtant, je dénombre à peine 3 ou 4 espèces de graminées et même pauvre nombre de variétés de fleurs sauvages guimauves, paquerettes, marguerites, l'achillée millefeuilles... après le solstice... une ou deux espèces de papillons (sylenes, tabacs d'Espagne, piérides, citrons...)
