I replaced my ISP router with OPNsense months ago, and I don’t regret it at all

Close-up of a computer case's rear panel showing HDMI, USB ports, LAN connectors, and a reset button. Decorative wooden surface below.
OPNsense can also be fairly simple to set up if you go with the basics (like most home routers offer). But the great thing is you can also deep dive into it and setup separated VLANs and masses of tweaks and rules.

What you need to know, though, is that you will need to run it on a separate piece of hardware (just like you’d have bought a router device) and ideally you’d want at least 4 Ethernet ports on it. The minimum is really two ports (a WAN port and a LAN port).

My OPNsense device is a Protectli with 4 ports. One is a WAN port, and I have reserved another for a LAN port, and I have the remaining two ports connected as a LAGG interface to my main switch (so it has dual links for load balancing and redundancy). But again, you don’t to do this either if you want to keep it simple.

What I still want to explore with mine, is using the Haproxy plugin to do my reverse proxying directly on the OPNsense device, instead of in a container on my server. This will mean that some traffic destined for my OpenWebRx device can flow directly from the router through the main switch and to the OpenWebRx device (instead of via the server and then back through the main switch).

OPNsense (and PFsense) does mean total control in your hands, and also ongoing updates and patches for many many years…

The Democratic machine threw everything they had—billionaire endorsements, NYT op-eds, a deluge of corporate cash, and the full weight of washed-up politicians like Andrew Cuomo, Bill Clinton, and Michael Bloomberg—at Zohran Mamdani. And he still won. Big.

They can either learn from him and become the party for working people, or continue to suffer at 26% approval rating. Here's what Mamdani's win can mean for American politics:

@aral the core principle of being on the Left is to tackle inequality, to achieve egalitarianism. Anything that doesn’t prioritise this isn’t the Left. Liberals who see themselves as the “managers” of the status quo, who are perfectly fine with a deeply unequal society, are on the Right, even if (sometimes, when convenient) they use the correct pronouns and acknowledge indigenous land (but never give it back)

For Music Women Wednesday how about this track from MitiS featuring RØRY on the vocals. She's got a really fun and distinctive voice. She also recently released an alt album called Restoration that's great, so if dubstep isn't your bag, you should check that out.

Eman Hillis - It has been two months since I last ate bread. Food in the markets has been fading away since Israel blocked nearly all aid into Gaza on 2 March.

Unlike many others who stored food during the January truce, fearing another harsh round of famine, my family and I made the risky decision not to store anything. We had previously done so, but lost everything when Israeli soldiers reached our area with their tanks.

10 Ways the Communist Manifesto has Infiltrated the USA
The Republicans and Democrats are different heads of the same beast, just like Socialists versus the National Socialists. The labels hardly matter. They are authoritarians first, and then break down into factions of communist, socialist, fascist, etc. Each grows the power of the federal government, and hands that power off to the next faction when the tides turn.

As expected, more details are emerging in other news outlets about the arrest of #ShinyHunters.

One detail I noted is that ShinyHunters is suspected of being responsible for the attacks on #LVMH, which is the high-end brand associated with Tiffany and Dior, who both reported breaches this year. Although there had been some speculation that #ScatteredSpider might be responsible for those breaches, it appears that ShinyHunters was allegedly responsible.

There have been a number of hacks this year where it is not clear -- in the absence of law enforcement confirmation -- whether a #databreach has been by Scattered Spider or ShinyHunters, or whether they have collaborated with one doing the hacking and the other doing the extortion. I predict in weeks/months to come, we will be given a pretty big list of big hacks that ShinyHunters has been involved in this year.

As I reported in my coverage of the PowerSchool hack and prosecution of Matthew Lane, ShinyHunters' name has been linked to that one, too, but was not named as a co-conspirator.

This is where I should write "This is a developing story..." huh?

What are asteroids? Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun just like planets do. In fact, sometimes asteroids are called “minor planets.” These space rocks were left behind after our solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Asteroids are found in a wide range of sizes. I have an idea for the Democrats to bring them back into “play.” After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election, the Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet – Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!

I want to make the point that Zohran Mamdani talked about affordability while also supporting trans kids and immigrants and refusing to endorse genocide and he won against the heavily favored Democrat despite an avalanche of racist, Islamophobic hatred and zillions in dark money. Candidates can do all these things and win. It's just the Democratic Party is full of sellouts, cowards, and bigots.

A Palestinian-Jordanian mother with German residency has been separated from her one-year-old son after German authorities labeled her child a “security threat,” according to a report by MEE.

“The German state systematically exploits residence, asylum, and citizenship laws to punish already marginalized communities,” said an ELSC spokesperson. “To label a one-year-old a ‘security threat’ marks a grotesque new low.”

It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!

I am okay with disk encryption if the owner of the device enables it themselves and understands at least a little bit about it.

Microsoft enabling it on people's computers without their knowledge is really scummy.

I have full disk encryption on my ThinkPad laptop with Linux and I'm okay with that... because I set it up and I know about it.

@gabriel fundamentally, the issue is that the data requires code execution to access, and that code will require the key material.

A drive that allowed you to approve access levels/modes, and used bio-metric to confirm your identity, I think would be closer to the ideal.

I had the chance to talk with an Offensive Security penetration team, and they more or less told me that, their time in Africa made them realize that, in a physical environment, the person will always be the weak link. (aka rubber hose attack)

And, personally, if I sit down and think about it, I buy very little privacy or protection from encrypting. But, I lose performance, and make the possibility of losing access to my own data much higher.

I'm excited by the idea of an NYC mayor who isn't awful.

When is the last time that NYC had a mayor who was halfway decent?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_…

I was going to post a poll, but I have no idea how far back you'd need to go to get a non-shitty mayor, and NYC has had a lot of mayors. Probably would need more than 4 poll options.

EDIT: This was not a rhetorical question, I genuinely want to know who was the last NYC mayor you think did a good job!

I don't know (I was pretty young when he was mayor, and I'm not from New York City), but I don't remember anything bad about him. I guess that was my point.

I remember a lot of bad things about Giuliani (even before Trump) for example.

Koch seemed to be well-liked by a lot of people and I don't remember any major scandals or bad press. Unlike say Reagan (who I think was President at the time) and him and the whole Iran-Contra scandal.

Koch -- to me as a young ousider -- seemed pretty decent but maybe my views are skewed.

Definitely not Bloomberg. That guy was an ass.

The biggest media failure on the bombing of Iran is that every article should have started with: "The Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015 effectively curtailed Iran's nuclear program until the US withdrew in 2018, under pressure from Israel".

Without this context, any commentary is worthless.

It didn’t take long. Trump has done every last thing the New York Times editorial board warned us about before the November 2024 election.

Do not look away. Do not be complacent.

Call your representatives and senators today. Let them know you expect them to stand up to Trump’s regime. Use @5calls or call the Capitol at +1 (202) 224-3121.

And check your voter registration at votefromabroad.org. Make sure you’re ready to vote in every election.
