در سال‌های اخیر افرادی بوده‌اند که گفته‌اند: «آیا نمی‌توان به‌دور از سیاست فقط روی کد و برنامه‌نویسی تمرکز کرد؟» که خب گرچه خواسته‌ای معقول می‌نماید، باید گفت خیر، نشدنی و نامعقول و خیالی است. هرچند هستند کسانی که «نرم‌افزار آزاد/متن‌باز» (FOSS) را صراحتاً غیرسیاسی می‌دانند و تأکید دارند که غیرسیاسی هم باید بماند. اما این تلقی حاکی از ناآگاهی کامل آن‌ها از ماهیتِ «نرم‌افزار آزاد» است. من در اغلب موارد فرض را بر جهل صادقانه این افراد می‌گذارم، و بنابراین سعی می‌کنم در ادامه به‌اجمال توضیح دهم که چرا «نرم‌افزار آزاد» سیاسی است.
«نرم‌افزار آزاد» سیاسی است
چه بخواهیم چه نخواهیم، اولاً و بالذات سیاسی است. «نرم‌افزار آزاد» (Free Software) جنبشی سیاسی و اخلاقی است که دست بر قضا روی نرم‌افزار متمرکز شده است. خود نرم‌افزار کمابیش جزوی از سیاست است. اگر این ادعا به‌نظرتان عجیب یا غیرعادی می‌رسد، به این دلیل است که شما فقط در معرض متن‌باز بوده‌اید. متن‌باز و آزاد فرق دارند.
ریچارد استالمن «نرم‌افزار آزاد» را در قالب یک مفهوم و جنبش در اوایل دهه ۱۹۸۰ به‌راه انداخت، آن‌هم براساس باوری بسیار ساده و روشن: «کاربران رایانه باید آزادانه برنامه‌ها را براساس نیازشان تغییر دهند و نرم‌افزار را به‌صورت آزاد به‌اشتراک بگذارند، زیرا کمک به افراد اسّ و اساس جامعه است.» این یک باور اخلاقی و سیاسی است. جنبش «نرم‌افزار آزاد» می‌گوید: کنترل زندگی دیجیتال کاربر باید در دست خودش باشد، و رایانه‌ها باید از کاربران‌شان اطاعت کنند، نه شخص یا سازمانی دیگر. حق کاربران در کمک به دوستان و همکاران و دیگران هستۀ اصلی جنبش «نرم‌افزار آزاد» است.
ممکن است با این موضع موافق باشید یا مخالف. مشکلی نیست. اما اس‌واساس «نرم‌افزار آزاد» است و انکار آن خطاست. نرم‌افزار آزاد در تضاد آشکار با نرم‌افزار انحصاری یا مالکیتی۱ است، که تأکید دارد «در استفاده از رایانه شرط اول قدم این بود که قول بدهید به همسایه‌تان کمک نکنید». حرف نابجایی هم نیست، کاملاً درست است. نرم‌افزار انحصاری عملاً و قانوناً کمک شما به افراد نیازمند را محدود می‌کند. اما «نرم‌افزار آزاد» بر این باور سیاسی است که اعمال چنین محدودیت‌هایی غیراخلاقی است. شما ممکن است موافق یا مخالف این موضع باشید، اما نمی‌توانید انکارش کنید.
از اوایل دهه ۱۹۸۰ تا اواخر دهه ۱۹۹۰ محبوبیت «نرم‌افزار آزاد» افزایش یافت، چندان که توجه شرکت‌های بزرگ فناوری را نیز رفته‌‌رفته به خود جلب کرد. شرکت‌ها به‌وضوح دریافتند که انتشار نرم‌افزار با «مجوز آزاد»۲ (که حقوق کاربران را در اصلاح و توزیع مجدد به‌جا می‌آورد) به همکاری بهتر و بیشتر برنامه‌نویسان و تولید کدهای باکیفیت‌تر و کدهای مجانی می‌انجامد (بالأخص از زمانی که اینترنت توزیع دیجیتال را آسان کرد). شرکت‌ها سخت به‌دنبال این دستاوردِ جنبش «نرم‌افزار آزاد» بودند (شما بگو که نبود؟)، اما با «سیاستِ» نرم‌افزار آزاد راحت نبودند. بسیاری از شرکت‌ها هم با معنای دووجهیِ کلمه «Free» (آزاد/رایگان) مشکل داشتند و هم با بحث‌هایی درباره حقوق کاربران.
بنابراین برخی از حامیان نرم‌افزار آزاد در سال ۱۹۹۷ تصمیم گرفتند عنوان تجاری «نرم‌افزار آزاد» را به «متن‌باز» تغییر دهند. آن‌ها تصمیم گرفتند دیگر از اخلاق و سیاست صحبت نکنند و فقط بر مزایای توسعۀ نرم‌افزار متمرکز شوند. شرکت‌ها تصمیم آن‌ها را پسندیدند، زیرا متوجه شدند که می‌توانند بدون نیاز به صحبت از حقوق کاربران [از کاربران و برنامه‌نویسان داوطلب] امکانات رایگان دریافت کنند. نسل بعدی مدافعانِ این تصمیم نیز صراحتاً به‌بهانۀ سهم خالص بازار۳ خواستار حذف «سیاست» از نرم‌افزار آزاد شدند. محض نمونه، رابرت مک‌میلان، سردبیر مجله لینوکس، «تصور می‌کند که حرکت به‌سوی نرم‌افزار متن‌باز باید با تصمیم‌های فنی تقویت شود نه سیاسی». همچنین مدیر عامل شرکت نرم‌افزار «کالدرا» بدون رودربایستی از کاربران خواست که هدف آزادی [نرم‌افزار] را کنار بگذارند و به‌جایش به افزایش «محبوبیت لینوکس» کمک کنند. به‌عبارت دیگر، حقوق «کاربرانِ نهایی»۴ هیچ مهم نیست. فقط یک چیز مهم است و بس: افراد زیادی از محصولات ما استفاده کنند.
از این‌رو، «متن‌باز روش توسعه است؛ اما نرم‌افزار آزاد جنبشی اجتماعی است». جنبش متن‌باز نرم‌افزارِ غیرآزاد [و انحصاری] را چندان بهینه و مطلوب نمی‌داند. اما جنبش نرم‌افزار آزاد نرم‌افزارِ غیرآزاد [و انحصاری] را یک معضل اجتماعی می‌داند و نرم‌افزار آزاد را راه‌حل این معضل.
حتی اگر بتوان اثبات کرد که محروم‌کردن کاربران از حقوق‌شان (حقِ کنترل رایانه شخصی‌شان) به تولید نرم‌افزار باکیفیت‌تر می‌انجامد، باز هم حقوق کاربران سلب می‌شود و بنابراین ناقض اصول اخلاقی است. این است موضع «نرم‌افزار آزاد». نرم‌افزار آزاد یک اعلامیه سیاسی است.
از آنجا که سال‌هاست می‌دانیم توسعه‌دهندگان از نرم‌افزارهای انحصاری‌شان هرچند وقت یک بار سوء‌استفاده می‌کنند، نقش و اهمیت «نرم‌افزار آزاد» دوچندان می‌شود. معروف است که مایکروسافت [در سال ۲۰۱۳] قبل از رفع حفره‌های امنیتی به آژانس امنیت ملی آمریکا (NSA) امکان «دسترسی زودهنگام»۵ داده بود. هر هفته می‌شنویم که فلان نرم‌افزار جدید روی تلفن‌های همراه یا رایانه‌های شخصی‌مان در حال جاسوسی از ماست و فعالیت‌های شخصی‌مان را بدون رضایت ما به شرکت تولیدکنندۀ آن محصول گزارش می‌دهد. اگر کاربران به کد منبع نرم‌افزاری که نصب می‌کنند دسترسی داشته باشند، همه این سوءاستفاده‌ها اگر نگوییم غیرممکن، دشوار خواهد شد؛ حتی اگر اکثر کاربران از کدنویسی سر درنیاورند کافی است فقط یک نفر متوجه درهای پشتی۶ یا جاسوس‌افزارهای۷ تعبیه‌شده بشود و به گوش همه برساند، و نسخه‌ای اصلاح‌شده منتشر کند و کدهای مخرب را از آن حذف کند.
آیا این بدان معناست که برخی الگوهای تجاری (مانند فروش داده‌های کاربران بدون رضایت آن‌ها) غیرممکن خواهد شد؟ به‌احتمال زیاد، بله. نرم‌افزار آزاد اعلامیه‌ای اخلاقی و سیاسی است که می‌گوید دفاع از حقوق کاربران مهم‌تر از الگوی کسبوکار شماست. اگر الگوی کسبوکار شما مستلزم نقض حقوق کاربران است، پس شما الگوی کسبوکار ندارید. ممکن است با این موضع موافق باشید یا مخالف. اما «نرم‌افزار آزاد» اعلامیه‌ای اکیداً سیاسی است.
نرم‌افزار آزاد قصد دارد از کاربرانِ نهایی در برابر توسعه‌دهندگان محافظت کند. زیرا صنعت فناوری اطلاعات (IT) به‌وضوح نشان داده است که نمی‌توان به آن اعتماد کرد. اگر کاربران برنامه‌ها را کنترل نکنند، در آن‌صورت برنامه‌ها کاربران را کنترل خواهند کرد. «نرم‌افزار آزاد» چیزی نیست جز حقوق مدنی کاربران که بر نرم‌افزار اعمال می‌شود.
چاره‌ای نیست، متن‌باز را دنبال می‌کنم
احتمالاً شما به کاربران اهمیتی نمی‌دهید. ترجیح می‌دهید تعداد زیادی کاربر و نرم‌افزار با کیفیت بالا داشته باشید و اهمیتی ندهید که دیگران را قادر می‌سازید از فعالیت شما در کنترل کاربران استفاده کنند، آن‌هم برخلاف میل‌شان. شما فقط یک توسعه‌دهندۀ متن‌باز هستید، زیر بار اخلاقِ «نرم‌افزار آزاد» نمی‌روید، سیاست به شما ربطی ندارد و خود را از سیاست برحذر می‌دارید و می‌گویید: من فقط می‌خواهم کد بزنم! کاش می‌توانستم بگویم برآوردنِ خواسته‌تان ممکن است. کاش. اگر ممکن بود زندگی به‌مراتب راحت‌تر می‌بود. شاید کدها در مقیاس خُرد که امکان تعیینِ الگوریتم‌های سریع‌تر مرتب‌سازی وجود دارد بتوانند غیرسیاسی باشند ولی نه در سطح برنامه‌های کاربردی (اپلیکیشن‌ها). به‌قول لری لسینگ۸ «انتخاب ما بین “وضع مقررات” و “مقررات‌زدایی” نیست. کدها مقررات وضع می‌کنند. ارزش‌ها را محقق می‌سازند یا ارزش‌ها را زیر پا می‌گذارند. آزادی‌ها را ممکن یا ناممکن می‌سازند. از حریم خصوصی محافظت می‌کنند یا آب به آسیاب نظارت می‌ریزند. آدم‌ها انتخاب می‌کنند که کدها چه کنند، چگونه این کارها را انجام دهند. آدم‌ها هستند که کدها را می‌نویسند».
یک برنامه چه مشخصه‌هایی دارد، چه اولویت‌هایی دارد، چه داده‌هایی جمع‌آوری می‌کند، چطور در دسترس قرار می‌گیرد، چه مشخصه‌های امنیتی‌ای دارد، چه درهای پشتی‌ای در برنامه گنجانده شده است، و هر سؤال دیگری درباره طراحی و دستورالعمل برنامه، سؤالی است انسانی نه فنی. این تصمیمات ذهنی آدم‌هاست که یک برنامه را تعریف می‌کند، نه سؤالات به‌ظاهر عینی طراحی رده‌ای و ماژولی (هرچند آن‌ها هم تمایل دارند بالنسبه ذهنی باشند).
این تصمیمات ذهنی را آدم‌ها به‌صورت ذهنی می‌گیرند. درست است که برخی از این تصمیمات ممکن است پیامدهای اخلاقی بزرگ‌تر یا کوچک‌تری داشته باشند، اما هیچ یک از آن‌ها از نظر اخلاقی کاملاً خنثی نیست. طراحی نرم‌افزار، برخلاف تصور ما، نمی‌تواند از نظر اخلاقی خنثی باشد.
در برنامه‌های کاربردی‌تان چه تصمیمات اخلاقی‌ای اتخاذ خواهید کرد؟ این یک سؤال سیاسی است. چه نوع کاربرانی را عمداً یا سهواً در اولویت قرار خواهید داد؟ این یک سؤال سیاسی است. چه اقداماتی انجام خواهید داد تا اطمینان دهید از ابزاری که می‌سازید در دستکاری اطلاعات کاربران و کنترل فعالیت کاربران، آن‌هم بدون اجازه و توافق، و ایجاد مزاحمت یا رفتار غرض‌ورزانه استفاده نمی‌شود؟ این یک سؤال سیاسی است.
توسعه نرم‌افزار در گرو پاسخ به این سؤالات است. ای کاش فقط تابع ریاضیات عینی و [تجزیه و تحلیل داده‌ها] بود. اما این‌طور نیست. به‌قول لری لسنیگ «ما می‌توانیم فضای مجازی را در راه حفظ ارزش‌هایی بسازیم که معتقدیم بنیادین‌اند. یا می‌توانیم فضای مجازی را به‌نحوی بسازیم که اجازه دهد آن ارزش‌ها گم‌و‌گور شوند. هیچ حد وسطی وجود ندارد. کدها را هرگز نمی‌یابند؛ کدها تا به حال فقط ساخته و نوشته شده‌اند، و همیشه نیز به‌دست خود ما». نرم‌افزار بالذات سیاسی است. «نرم‌افزار آزاد» صراحتاً سیاسی است. همواره سیاسی بوده است.

OPNsense can also be fairly simple to set up if you go with the basics (like most home routers offer). But the great thing is you can also deep dive into it and setup separated VLANs and masses of tweaks and rules.
What you need to know, though, is that you will need to run it on a separate piece of hardware (just like you’d have bought a router device) and ideally you’d want at least 4 Ethernet ports on it. The minimum is really two ports (a WAN port and a LAN port).
My OPNsense device is a Protectli with 4 ports. One is a WAN port, and I have reserved another for a LAN port, and I have the remaining two ports connected as a LAGG interface to my main switch (so it has dual links for load balancing and redundancy). But again, you don’t to do this either if you want to keep it simple.
What I still want to explore with mine, is using the Haproxy plugin to do my reverse proxying directly on the OPNsense device, instead of in a container on my server. This will mean that some traffic destined for my OpenWebRx device can flow directly from the router through the main switch and to the OpenWebRx device (instead of via the server and then back through the main switch).
OPNsense (and PFsense) does mean total control in your hands, and also ongoing updates and patches for many many years…

As expected, more details are emerging in other news outlets about the arrest of #ShinyHunters.
One detail I noted is that ShinyHunters is suspected of being responsible for the attacks on #LVMH, which is the high-end brand associated with Tiffany and Dior, who both reported breaches this year. Although there had been some speculation that #ScatteredSpider might be responsible for those breaches, it appears that ShinyHunters was allegedly responsible.
There have been a number of hacks this year where it is not clear -- in the absence of law enforcement confirmation -- whether a #databreach has been by Scattered Spider or ShinyHunters, or whether they have collaborated with one doing the hacking and the other doing the extortion. I predict in weeks/months to come, we will be given a pretty big list of big hacks that ShinyHunters has been involved in this year.
As I reported in my coverage of the PowerSchool hack and prosecution of Matthew Lane, ShinyHunters' name has been linked to that one, too, but was not named as a co-conspirator.
