When did Minds.com join the fediverse?

Hello people of fedi,

I've just saw someone in my timeline coming from www.minds.com.

I've known minds.com, which was at the start since it was annouced a few years back and even joined, but soon realised it was not for me and too few people... So I left.

It was just a social media with a weird crypto associated to it. But I remember liking their UI and design a lot back in the days.

But now it seems they activated ActivityPub support, doed anyone knows anything about this? Is this recent and we missed something or am I out of touch with Fediverse news? 👀

Frankly, I think even Israel's biggest enabler (the US) is exhausted and beginning to move on. The US regime is interested in material gain, which Israel isn't really offering these days. And even a blind person can see that starving and bombing babies for years is WAY WORSE than disliking Israel.

Like in the children's game where players must stop moving when "red light" is called, Palestinians approaching food distribution sites face live fire when they're not supposed to be there, and can only approach safely when the "green light" is given (when the distribution center opens). The soldiers are essentially treating starving civilians seeking food like players in a deadly version of a children's game - shoot to stop them from moving forward, then allow them to approach only during the designated hour when distribution occurs.

@badrihippo Unfortunately, it’s also not Israel’s first massacre; they’re not even trying to hide their glee as they watch the slaughter. I remember how much pushback there was about Deir Yassin and Tantura, even recently. You weren’t even allowed to question the purity of arms of pre-state militias, and then Kefar Qassem… and on and on. No one wanted to hear this then, and even less now. As someone posted today, why isn’t the #NYT, BBC, etc. publishing what appears on Haaretz regularly? There’s so much documented by Israeli researchers and investigators that it’s overwhelmingly clear.

Is Linux accidentally giving itself an unfair reputation for being difficult?

Helped a non-techy person on the phone get their wifi working on a Linux laptop, we solved it by them pressing the physical flight mode button and then toggling the wireless option in the GUI. Pretty easy, as easy as Mac or Windows.

BUT... when I looked this problem up on a search engine, the first page of results involved the command line and scary paragraphs of CLI text about hardware and drivers.

If this non-techy person had looked this up, they would have seen scary CLI options as top results, and been unfairly intimidated away from Linux.

This is mainly a perception problem. The non-techy person was not just using Linux, but also using a display manager with a network manager widget.

A raspberry PI running in headless mode can also be running Linux, but probably would need the CLI version of the network manager.

Linux has so many flavours that some of them are user friendly with graphical environments, while others are lean and more server-like.

This is #Israel / Racism & coercion: on the Depo-Provera Issue and the Ethiopian community (research)

I’ve seen this issue discussed here recently. Here’s some context about an historical and ongoing overreach of the state and medical authorities in controlling the fertility of Ethiopian immigrant women, in this case the forced (or “strongly encouraged”) use of the Depo-Provera contraceptive injection, extracted for a recent research paper.

The issue dates back to the 1990s and continues to the present day. Ethiopian immigrants, who often faced discrimination and were perceived as having higher birth rates, were disproportionately targeted by state-sponsored programs aimed at limiting their family size.

The Depo-Provera injection, a long-acting reversible contraceptive, was frequently administered to Ethiopian women, often without full informed consent or consideration of their individual needs and desires. This practice was sometimes carried out in the context of family planning programs in absorption centers for new immigrants.

The Israeli government and medical authorities played a role in perpetuating this issue. While some officials initially denied or downplayed the extent of the problem, investigations and reports revealed a pattern of coercive practices.

The issue is deeply rooted in racism and discrimination against Ethiopian immigrants, who were often viewed as a "problem", requiring state intervention to control their population growth. This reflects broader societal biases and stereotypes which is not limited to the Ethiopian community, if we limit the discussion to Jewish immigrants.

The researcher, Chedva Eyal, states that despite some changes in policy, concerns remain about the potential for continued overreach and a lack of respect for the reproductive rights of Ethiopian women.

[…] For example, the testimony of Shula, who arrived at a Kupat Holim (healthcare clinic) branch in central Israel after giving birth to her son. The nurse insisted she take Depo-Provera, even though Shula did not request contraception and even emphasized that she did not have a partner. Shula, stunned by the intensity of the pressure, decided to go to another clinic to avoid taking contraception she had not asked for at all. The visitor might also have heard the testimony of an Ethiopian woman who refused to take Depo-Provera and was insulted with "retard, foolish," and because of her three pregnancies, she was offered an abortion. The racist and humiliating treatment, along with cases of a lack of medical care infrastructure, indicate a difficult and complex reality that is not reflected in the visitor's inquiry.

On March 26, 2010 Nancy Schaefer and her husband Bruce were found dead in their Habersham County home. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation ruled the deaths a murder-suicide, asserting Bruce shot Nancy in the back while she slept and then turned the gun on himself, leaving a suicide note and no signs of forced entry and closed the case rapidly \[1].

Nancy Schaefer had been removed from the Georgia State Senate in 2008 but continued as an outspoken critic of child protective services, publishing in 2007 “Investigation of Child Protective Services,” which alleged Title IV-E funding incentives drove unwarranted child removals, financial fraud, and trafficking in concert with foster and adoption agencies \[2].

At the death scene GBI reported Nancy had a single gunshot wound to the back and Bruce a self-inflicted chest wound; towels near the handgun and no forced entry were cited as consistent with murder-suicide, yet no independent forensic audit, ballistics reconstruction, blood spatter or gunshot residue analysis has ever been released \[1].

Family members and close associates unanimously rejected the official narrative. Nancy exhibited no suicidal ideation, was in good health, planning international speaking engagements and a documentary release, and Bruce showed no history of depression, financial distress, or violence; both were described as supportive, stable, and focused on activism \[3].

Prior to her death Nancy publicly reported receiving threats linked to her investigations of CPS and alleged involvement in exposing international child trafficking networks; her collected documentation and documentary materials vanished after the deaths, and FOIA requests for related records were met with redaction or denial \[4].

Major media outlets offered minimal coverage, no Congressional inquiry or independent autopsy was conducted, and federal agencies showed no interest in her documented civil rights and RICO-related allegations against CPS and state actors, despite her presentations before conservative organizations and United Nations forums \[5].

Independent investigators and family‐designated experts were denied access to autopsy materials, crime scene evidence, and sealed court documents; whistleblower accounts within Georgia’s legal system claim her work threatened sealed federal interests, yet these assertions remain unverified due to restricted records \[6].

Nancy Schaefer’s death aligns with a pattern of unexplained fatalities among CPS whistleblowers and reform advocates, including Monica Petersen and Senator Linda Collins-Smith, characterized by abrupt official rulings of suicide or accident, rapid case closures, and absence of thorough forensic review \[7].

This model is exported globally via UNICEF, WHO, and philanthropic groups. The UN's number 1 stated goal is to end poverty; apparently by ending poor famalies.

The majority of removals (75%) are not for abuse, but a percieved risk of “neglect”. Even when the child was in no danger, and better off with family. (ACF, Child Maltreatment 2022). Reunification rates remain below 50%, with many parents permanently losing custody despite no criminal convictions (Children’s Bureau Annual Report, 2022).

These removals destroy family bonds, and cause irreversible damage to children. Outcomes in foster care are catastrophically worse than remaining with their families, marked by high rates of malnutrition, abuse, medical neglect, psychotropic overmedication, disappearances, and deaths—many concealed or misclassified. Sexual exploitation, trafficking, and organ harvesting disproportionately victimize foster youth, making the system a documented human trafficking conduit under the guise of protection.

National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) reports from 2021 indicate foster children experience mortality rates 20 times higher than age-matched peers, with deaths attributed to neglect, abuse, untreated medical conditions, and suicide. Investigative journalism from The Guardian and ProPublica revealed widespread physical and sexual abuse in foster care and group homes, forced medication, malnutrition, and neglect. The GAO (2019) documented that 61% of foster children received psychotropic medications, often prescribed off-label without FDA approval or adequate psychiatric oversight.
