The less faith I have that we’ll be able to work out a trade deal that the US leader will actually abide by, the more I think @pluralistic ’s idea of turning Canada into the land of software lock bypassing could work.
It feels like the software-nuclear option—it would do more harm than good if we didn’t dedicate ourselves to it for at least 5 years, and that would effectively stop talks.
But if the negotiations are subject to daily whims anyway… maybe we should just get it over with.

I got approved for SNAP (food aid) less than 24 hours after I applied due to being $6.50 below the income cutoff for expedited application 🎉
one big effect: I'll be much better able to afford occasional non-food expenses like allergy meds (if unmedicated, my allergies here are so bad during mid to late summer that I'm incapacitated, it's unreal how bad hay fever can get)
another: I'll more easily be able to take opportunities for alone time like the one I'm having now, without having to figure out how to drag multiple kilos of food with me like I did this time.

“Palestine Action is not an armed group. It has never been responsible for any fatalities and does not pose any risk to the public. Its methods do involve property sabotage, which is, obviously, illegal. But if killing 23 civilians at an aid distribution site is not terrorism, how can we possibly be expected to accept that spray-painting a plane is? Law-abiding protest has so far failed to stop the genocide. More than 50,000 innocent children have been killed or injured. In what circumstances could civil disobedience ever be justified if not now?
I can only say that I admire and support Palestine Action wholeheartedly – and I will continue to, whether that becomes a terrorist offence or not.”

To understand what relays do you need to understand how federation works. Your posts can't reach every server because your server doesn't even know that most of them exist, so initially they'll only go to servers where at least one person there follows you. If someone reshares or replies it then it'll also go to the servers where they have followers.
Relays exist to fill in the gaps since all your posts are sent to them and then sent on to every server subscribed to them. With a lot of followers you'll have a wide enough reach without them, but until then they're useful for getting out there.

System is Fedora KDE, graphics card is an Asrock Radeon 5900GRE, display is a Gigabyte M34WQ (1440p ultrawide 144Hz refresh rate) attached via DisplayPort.
Despite being on a UPS (which...we're also going to have to talk about) my system was apparently shut down by a thunderstorm. I booted it up, and the display was acting glitchy. I would get two mouse cursors, and below the mouse cursor the screen would go a solid color, as if it was glitching on a pixel and then displaying that from there down.
Switching to a lower refresh rate made the problem go away, I've switched back up and it seems to be alright. A second 1080p60 monitor attached via HDMI didn't show any problem.
Some googling didn't turn up exactly what I was experiencing. Can anyone help troubleshoot this? It seems okay for the moment but I'm hoping I don't have a wounded GPU.
like this
Probably surge damage, honestly. Was your monitor plugged into the UPS or another surge protector, or just into a wall? Do you have any other cables connecting to your machine that aren't on the UPS or a surge protector? Also, a power strip is not equal to a surge protector.
As far as the cause, if you're seeing artifacts on screen past a certain position on the screen, that's the screen or cable, not the GPU. Your display adapter sends fully rendered frames to the display and wouldn't have a specific part of the frame that is corrupted if damaged. Anecdotally speaking, if a GPU has damage, it just won't work.
Also, you may want to check the capacitors on your card and motherboard to make sure they're all still flat and not bulging. If bulging, you took took surge damage and need to redo your cabling to make sure everything is protected.
Everything is attached to the UPS, both the computer and the main monitor are on the battery side. Why the computer was shut off on this UPS, I don't know. I might be switching brands of UPS.
If I switch it down to 60 or 100 Hz, the problem goes away entirely, so I don't think it's a hardware damage issue at this point. Like, I did a software update, I wonder if it's booted up with a slightly newer version of mesa or wayland or something that isn't playing nice.
Check your package manager logs to find out. Also check dmesg
just in case.
Edit: you know what...try changing the outlet the monitor is plugged into and see if anything changes. Curious if the signal is weird or the rectifier got damaged by a surge. Maybe try the wall as well to find out if it still does it.
Switched the socket on the GPU the DP cable is plugged into, I think I see the same problem. It's only been a few seconds, I haven't seen the "lower portion of the screen from about the mouse down goes one color" thing yet but I have been seeing a double mouse cursor. This goes away completely when setting the frame rate down to 100 (says 99.98 in the KDE settings menu).
Not sure what I'm looking for in package manager logs or dmesg.
Right now, if I set KDE's settings to 100 Hz, everything looks fine. If I set it to 144 Hz, sometimes I see a double mouse cursor. I get a second cursor about an inch to the right of what seems to be the actual cursor.
Explain how a problem with the UPS will cause that symptom.
When you increase your resolution, your monitor switches power modes. At a higher refresh rate, a dirty power signal can cause artifacts on the screen. Usually this means that you'd see bit crawl on the edges of the screen, but it could show display artifacts like you describe depending on the panel controller.
If your UPS took a hit during a thunderstorm, you could easily have a damaged rectifier in the UPS. That rectifier is responsible for smoothing the power signal coming out the ports on your UPS. A dirty signal can do the above as I mentioned.
You wouldn't notice a problem on your machine because it's own PSU smooths those signals out, but a monitor doesn't have that.
It's not bulletproof, but I've seen it live, so it happens. Proof:
forums.tomshardware.com/thread…
I have an AOC AG272FG4 which has started to show artifacts like this and this, the image also becomes choppy and unresponsive but only what it's displayed not the pc itself. It started happening...Tom's Hardware Forum
Okay, it's not the power supply. Found this on the Fedora forums: discussion.fedoraproject.org/t…
Apparently the power failure just happened to coincide with a kernel update that causes a bug with AMD firmware; people are reporting the issue with higher end Radeon 7000 series cards using high refresh monitors attached via DP with kernel 6.15.
My uname -r output: 6.15.3-200.fc42.x86_64
So I can either learn how to revert to kernel 6.14 on Fedora, I've never messed with it before, or live with 100Hz like a bronze age slum rat until they push a fix.
The further mystery is why a momentary power loss took down a PC plugged into a UPS. It has one job, that it apparently didn't do.
I had this same issue, as others have stated it seems to be related to higher refresh rates, as the highest I can go without this issue is 99.95Hz. Operating System: Fedora Linux 41 KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.0 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.15.Fedora Discussion
I'm using CloneZilla right now to copy an OS from a slow hard drive to a faster SSD (both SATA).
It's on a Dell E6530 - not the best machine, but still capable of a lot of common computing tasks. The owner plans on continuing to use Windows 10 on it as a secondary laptop and wants to extend its life.
To be fair, you could have used tar, moved it over to the other drive and then extracted the tar.
As long as you re-created the partitions, mounted them correctly and know how to re-install grub, anyway.
Sorry, sorry. You mentioned windows. I'm just used to Linux. I guess for windows you're stuck with clonezilla?
I use Linux and BSD for all my own stuff, but I work on Windows computers for a lot of people.
CloneZilla has been very useful tool for me over the years.

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) joins all peace-loving and democratic forces around the world in condemning in the strongest terms the US imperialist government of Donald Trump for the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities in the early morning hours of June 22.
The US bombing of Iran, that follows more than one week of missile strikes by the Zionist state of Israel, is a brazen violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and a gross crime against international law.
The pretext about Iran’s program for developing nuclear weapons, that Trump has used to justify the US bombing, is the same justification that Benjamin Netanyahu for firing missiles against Iran. This has been repeatedly dismissed by experts and even by the US intelligence agency as groundless.
The “preemptive strikes” carried out by the US and Israel are based on claims similar to the big lie of “weapons of mass destruction” which the US imperialists used to justify its invasion and overthrow of Saddam Hussein in more than twenty years ago.
In weaving such a narrative, the US imperialists insists that it alone has the right to determine who can develop and possess nuclear weapons. It also insists on having the unfounded right to impose its will on any country, and to punish anyone that does not bow to its authority based on its nuclear-backed military power.
The US bombing derails the efforts of the Arab community and leading European countries, along with Iran, to push for negotiations to forge a nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Trump himself abrogated the non-proliferation treaty in 2018 and has shown no interest in restoring it. Instead, he threatens to assassinate the Iranian Supreme Leader, calls for the overthrow of the Irani government, and demands its “unconditional surrender.”
By dropping bombs on Iran, Trump wants to extend his authoritarian style of government beyond the borders of the US. The desire of US President Trump to reign as global king must be condemned and rejected by freedom-loving people of the world.
The US bombing of Iran constitutes an outright war of aggression. The clear objective of this war is for Iran to surrender its sovereignty and the country’s wealth and resources. In seeking to force Iran to its knees, the US aims to control the vast oil resources of the country and the region.
Iran has all the right to defend its sovereignty and interests against the US-Israel war of aggression. We support the Iranian people as they rise up in their millions against the much detested US imperialist ogre.
By declaring war against Iran, Trump has roused calls for him to be impeached and removed from office, for having done so without congressional approval. In the coming days and weeks, it will certainly galvanize calls for him to be ousted from power. The American people are fed up by his authoritarianism and are ready to take action to put an end to his tyranny. They have the support of all freedom-loving forces around the world.
People all over the world, including the Filipino people, must stand with the people of Iran, as well as with the Palestinian people, in fighting the US-Israel war machine, as it rampages through the Middle East to force nations to bow to its power, and surrender their freedom. In Gaza, the US-supported Israeli bombing has killed close to 60,000 people, maimed hundreds of thousands more, and caused a massive humanitarian crisis characterized by disease and hunger. Israeli occupying forces have been daily killing hundreds of Palestinians in desperate food lines.
Trump must be made to pay for his transgressions. Otherwise, he will only be emboldened to commit even worse crimes as the US imperialists desperately avoid a recession amid a deepening global capitalist crisis, and seek to redivide the world to get the biggest share of the plunder for itself.
In ordering the bombing of Iran, Trump has pushed the world closer to the precipice of a prolonged and more intense armed conflict, that runs the risk of pulling more and more countries into the vortex of a war covering the Middle East and beyond, and causing even greater sufferings on millions upon millions of people, including hundreds of thousands of Filipino migrant workers toiling overseas.
The Filipino proletariat and people must stand firmly against US imperialists wars. They must denounce the puppet Marcos regime for having allowed the US to build more military bases, deploy thousands of US troops, stockpile its weapons and stage one war exercise after another on Philippine soil, air and seas. They must resolutely fight against US imperialist wars, and stand firm and united in demanding an end to US military intervention and military presence in the country.
The Filipino people must organize mass protests to manifest their indignation against the US imperialists and its Israeli Zionist lackeys for the war of aggression against Iran, and to manifest solidarity to the Iranian and Palestinian people as they fight to defend their rights and their land. They must fight the Marcos regime whose subservience has allowed the US to drag the Philippines to its war strategy.
The Party calls on the Filipino people to join and support the New People’s Army and advance the people’s war, as the principal form of struggle to fight the puppet Marcos regime and the US-supported reactionary armed forces. By intensifying and expanding the people’s war against the US puppet troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Filipino people effectively contributes to the struggle of the people of the world to fight and prevent imperialist war.
