aah I have early signs of arthritis myself in my right hand from a boxerâs fracture when I was an amateur fighter. Iâm not too familiar with the shinai but as I understand it the recommended hand protection is called a âkoteâ but I think any lobster mitten style glove would work.
Something like this: woodenswords.com/product_p/sg.âŠ
I donât recommend using any 5 finger style gloves but if it comes down to affordability its better than nothing. Trust me though, spending $100+ on hand protection is worth the investment to protect your hands if you want to spar with any amount of force.

Former UN human rights official Craig Mokhiber sharply criticized Baerbockâs election. He wrote: âThe United Nations was born in opposition to German war criminals. Hesitating getting a Switch 2 (1st game console in 15 years)...
I haven't had a proper game console since the PS3.
I would like to get one, mostly to play with my family (wife, 7yo kid). I had been waiting for the Switch 2 for a while now (I really resisted the urge to get a Switch OLED back when it was released...).
On the plus side:
- it's really geared towards family/party gaming
- it's Nintendo, so you get the whole usual games (Mario Kart, Zelda, etc.)
- like most consoles, it's plug and play and can be enjoyed in the living room (I kind of gave up trying to set up a proper gaming experience with my Linux PCs, given that I don't have the hardware for it)
On the minus side:
- the battery life is not great to say the least (2.5 hours takes me back of the Game Gear in early 90s!)
- the screen seems to be pretty bad too (at least it's a step back from the OLED one of the Switch)
- the joycons are still not using a Hall effect sensor, meaning they might still be prone to drifting
- most of the games will not be sold as proper cartridges but as download codes
- the whole thing (console, additional gamepads, games) is quite pricey
- it's Nintendo, famous for their anti-everything (anti-homebrew, anti-emulation, anti-piracy)
Should IâŻstill go with it, or is there a better option? (I hope the better option is not to wait 4 more years for Nintendo to release a newer Switch 2 that would fix the shitty hardware).
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
The Switch 2's super sluggish LCD screen is 10 times slower than a typical gaming monitor and 100 times slower than an OLED panel according to independent testing
Switch 2's IPS display probably isn't using overdrive.Jeremy Laird (PC Gamer)
I personally don't recommend anyone get the Switch 2. The new price points are frankly ridiculous, and I'd hate to see that shit get justified by sales.
Personally, I'd recommend looking into handheld PCs. I haven't looked into them much myself due to lack of money, but they're generally much more worth the cost from what I've heard.
All that said, I missed that you were looking for something to play with your 7 year old child. Switch might be better, but any handheld would be... notably destructible, so that's a factor to keep in mind.
Yeah, Mastodon's Unlisted is such a misnomer. My biggest gripe with it is that it mainly means "unsearchable".
And you can't really change that on a server, since that would mean that people who did mean "unsearchable" when they chose "unlisted", suddenly find their posts showing up in searches without their consent...
Friendica meanwhile shows threads as threads, but without the collapsing which would be very useful.

#Kneecap news: according to the band themselves, they've been told that their set will not be streamed live but will be available on demand (presumably with some politically inappropriate words cut out) this evening.
I don't know what time this evening, and finding recorded sets on the iplayer during the festival is a challenge at the best of times.
But everyone, do please watch it when you can. I know that most of the people posting about Kneecap here will have no interest in enjoying the actual music, it's just a political point to make.
However, the only reason their political stances have made any headlines at all is because they're popular. And the only reason they're popular is that they are very good at what they do. It would be a great shame if everyone just focused on using them as a political football without paying attention to the tremendously entertaining music that Kneecap make.
Anyway, in about a quarter of an hour, BBC will be streaming Bob Vylan from the West Holts stage without controversy, and they're very good too, so watch that.

We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent
We are constantly fed a version of AI that looks, sounds and acts suspiciously like us. It speaks in polished sentences, mimics emotions, expresses curiosity, claims to feel compassion, even dabbles in what it calls creativity. But what we call AI today is nothing more than a statistical machine: a digital parrot regurgitating patterns mined from oceans of human data (the situation hasnât changed much since it was discussed here five years ago). When it writes an answer to a question, it literally just guesses which letter and word will come next in a sequence â based on the data itâs been trained on.
This means AI has no understanding. No consciousness. No knowledge in any real, human sense. Just pure probability-driven, engineered brilliance â nothing more, and nothing less.
So why is a real âthinkingâ AI likely impossible? Because itâs bodiless. It has no senses, no flesh, no nerves, no pain, no pleasure. It doesnât hunger, desire or fear. And because there is no cognition â not a shred â thereâs a fundamental gap between the data it consumes (data born out of human feelings and experience) and what it can do with them.
Philosopher David Chalmers calls the mysterious mechanism underlying the relationship between our physical body and consciousness the âhard problem of consciousnessâ. Eminent scientists have recently hypothesised that consciousness actually emerges from the integration of internal, mental states with sensory representations (such as changes in heart rate, sweating and much more).
Given the paramount importance of the human senses and emotion for consciousness to âhappenâ, there is a profound and probably irreconcilable disconnect between general AI, the machine, and consciousness, a human phenomenon.
We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent â hereâs how
AI may appear human, but it is an illusion we must tackle. The Conversation
