You know what I miss in word processors: Show Control Codes.

That gave you everything you needed to know why this thing won't do what you want it to and why this other thing is stuck and you can't move it. It also made it so much easier to troubleshoot inserting images.

There were no secrets.

Microsoft Word keeps secrets and I don't like it.

@Blueteamsherpa It's part of the way there. What I really want is Markdown but with all of Word's advanced features.
Word doesn't show me control codes for things like italics, bold, tables, URLs.
I tend to use Obsidian or VS Code for first drafts in pure Markdown and then copy it over to Word to finalize it with stuff like headers, footers, page numbers, table of contents, etc.

I used to use OneNote just for its ability to organize ideas but its so aggressive with the genAI crap that I'm looking for alternatives.
Also, I feel like OneNote hasn't had any meaningful updates or added features in years. It's still stuck in 2010.

I recently saw a tourism ad from #Quebec #Canada that nearly made me cry. A visitor is checking in at a hotel. When the clerk asks where heโ€™s traveling from, he looks ashamed and whispers โ€œIโ€™m Americanโ€. The clerk presses a button under the desk, which I initially thought was a panic button. Instead it unlocks a panel allowing her to come out from behind the desk, and she gives the guy a big hug. I nearly lost it. I wish I could move to Canada. This meant a lot to me.โค๏ธ

Triple-bad time for homeowners, in the SW still recovering from two bulls-eye hurricanes. Insurance is high, labor is scarce, and as you say @Katherine Bond - a lot of Canadians own homes &/or vacation homes in SW FL. And as they sell, few buyers are liking the scene, so down go values, and services.

I was recently at two state parks in FL, usually full to the gills, but neither big park seemed to have any day tourists, Empty roads & paths! But packed with US'ians in huge motor homes. From Minnesota, GA, TX ... Meanwhile, homeowners who think it's time to sell and leave 'Paradise' are not finding buyers. The wealthy may not care, mansions are still being built, a short private jet-ride from Mar-a-lago....

yea so the thing about iran's underground nuke facilities, is that if they were really "totally obliterated" as in, the blast wave went all the way down to penetrate the actual structure, there would probably be video of the blast wave coming out of the entrances. they shot the bombs down the ventilation shafts so you'd expect it to blow the entrances out.

i figure if such video existed they would have shown it. instead we just see holes punched in the ground near the vent shafts.

still not convinced. but eh whatever it was a good show and everyone backed down. better than a ground assault

Tribal and community leaders in Gaza are uniting to secure aid convoys after over 500 people have been killed in daily aid massacres.

Hesitating getting a Switch 2 (1st game console in 15 years)...

I haven't had a proper game console since the PS3.

I would like to get one, mostly to play with my family (wife, 7yo kid). I had been waiting for the Switch 2 for a while now (I really resisted the urge to get a Switch OLED back when it was released...).

On the plus side:

  • it's really geared towards family/party gaming
  • it's Nintendo, so you get the whole usual games (Mario Kart, Zelda, etc.)
  • like most consoles, it's plug and play and can be enjoyed in the living room (I kind of gave up trying to set up a proper gaming experience with my Linux PCs, given that I don't have the hardware for it)

On the minus side:

  • the battery life is not great to say the least (2.5 hours takes me back of the Game Gear in early 90s!)
  • the screen seems to be pretty bad too (at least it's a step back from the OLED one of the Switch)
  • the joycons are still not using a Hall effect sensor, meaning they might still be prone to drifting
  • most of the games will not be sold as proper cartridges but as download codes
  • the whole thing (console, additional gamepads, games) is quite pricey
  • it's Nintendo, famous for their anti-everything (anti-homebrew, anti-emulation, anti-piracy)

Should Iโ€ฏstill go with it, or is there a better option? (I hope the better option is not to wait 4 more years for Nintendo to release a newer Switch 2 that would fix the shitty hardware).

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

in reply to laopi

I personally don't recommend anyone get the Switch 2. The new price points are frankly ridiculous, and I'd hate to see that shit get justified by sales.

Personally, I'd recommend looking into handheld PCs. I haven't looked into them much myself due to lack of money, but they're generally much more worth the cost from what I've heard.

All that said, I missed that you were looking for something to play with your 7 year old child. Switch might be better, but any handheld would be... notably destructible, so that's a factor to keep in mind.

Yeah, Mastodon's Unlisted is such a misnomer. My biggest gripe with it is that it mainly means "unsearchable".

And you can't really change that on a server, since that would mean that people who did mean "unsearchable" when they chose "unlisted", suddenly find their posts showing up in searches without their consent...

Friendica meanwhile shows threads as threads, but without the collapsing which would be very useful.

That's an urban legend, alas. While that *would* be a great way to make "unlisted" work, that's absolutely, positively, 100% *not* how "unlisted" works.

More here, including how to manage threads in your timeline:

#Kneecap news: according to the band themselves, they've been told that their set will not be streamed live but will be available on demand (presumably with some politically inappropriate words cut out) this evening.

I don't know what time this evening, and finding recorded sets on the iplayer during the festival is a challenge at the best of times.

But everyone, do please watch it when you can. I know that most of the people posting about Kneecap here will have no interest in enjoying the actual music, it's just a political point to make.

However, the only reason their political stances have made any headlines at all is because they're popular. And the only reason they're popular is that they are very good at what they do. It would be a great shame if everyone just focused on using them as a political football without paying attention to the tremendously entertaining music that Kneecap make.

Anyway, in about a quarter of an hour, BBC will be streaming Bob Vylan from the West Holts stage without controversy, and they're very good too, so watch that.

We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent

We are constantly fed a version of AI that looks, sounds and acts suspiciously like us. It speaks in polished sentences, mimics emotions, expresses curiosity, claims to feel compassion, even dabbles in what it calls creativity.

But what we call AI today is nothing more than a statistical machine: a digital parrot regurgitating patterns mined from oceans of human data (the situation hasnโ€™t changed much since it was discussed here five years ago). When it writes an answer to a question, it literally just guesses which letter and word will come next in a sequence โ€“ based on the data itโ€™s been trained on.

This means AI has no understanding. No consciousness. No knowledge in any real, human sense. Just pure probability-driven, engineered brilliance โ€” nothing more, and nothing less.

So why is a real โ€œthinkingโ€ AI likely impossible? Because itโ€™s bodiless. It has no senses, no flesh, no nerves, no pain, no pleasure. It doesnโ€™t hunger, desire or fear. And because there is no cognition โ€” not a shred โ€” thereโ€™s a fundamental gap between the data it consumes (data born out of human feelings and experience) and what it can do with them.

Philosopher David Chalmers calls the mysterious mechanism underlying the relationship between our physical body and consciousness the โ€œhard problem of consciousnessโ€. Eminent scientists have recently hypothesised that consciousness actually emerges from the integration of internal, mental states with sensory representations (such as changes in heart rate, sweating and much more).

Given the paramount importance of the human senses and emotion for consciousness to โ€œhappenโ€, there is a profound and probably irreconcilable disconnect between general AI, the machine, and consciousness, a human phenomenon.
