Video (see previous post) has emerged of a gang rape of a #Palestinian prisoner by guards at the Sde Teiman detention facility in the Negev desert, southern #Israel. Ten soldiers were ultimately arrested for the rape on July 29, in a case that has rocked Israeli society. The soldiers belong to a unit known as Force 100, which is tasked with guarding the Sde Teiman facility, according to Haaretz Military prosecutors released three of the arrested soldiers on August 4, adding to the two previously released by investigators following a military court hearing in Kfar Yona on July 30, at which protesters gathered in support of the soldiers under arrest. Bezalel Smotrich demanded “an immediate criminal investigation to locate the leakers of the trending video that was intended to harm the reservists and that caused tremendous damage to Israel in the world and to exhaust the full severity of the law against them”. Women are routinely sexually abused during home invasions by the Israeli military. They’re forced to disrobe – sometimes in front of their male relatives – and adopt humiliating poses for the soldiers to film them, Khraim said. During some #WestBank home invasions, the other advocate testified, Israeli soldiers touched Palestinian women sexually and threatened them with rape, all while their male relatives were handcuffed. The soldiers “make sexual noises and gestures, threaten to rape [the woman] even, doing this in front of [her male relatives] while they're being handcuffed or blindfolded, not able to stop it, not able to protect [their] daughter, sister, whatever it may be. It's a form to not only control the woman, but also control the men as well, and break up the family and, in turn, break up society as a whole.”

The army plans to expel 1,500-2,000 Palestinians from Fire Zone 918 in Masafer Yatta, claiming that they are not "permanent residents". Meanwhile, 11 illegal outposts have been established, with the army's support, within the same Fire Zone. In the West Bank, Fire Zones now cover nearly a million dunams, and their primary function seems to be training for one thing, which is how to expel Palestinians.
Last Tuesday (June 17, 2025), a document was circulated within the #IDF Central Command headquarters and it deserves close attention. Titled "Subject: Training Routine in Fire Zone 918", the two page memo, signed by Major Sari Saban, lays out in detail why it is needy to expel approximately 1,500-2,000 Palestinian residents that are living in an area that was first declared a military “Fire Zone” by Israel in the late 1971. Fire Zones, as a reminder, are always designated as "Closed Military Zones" where, according to the army, only "permanent residents" are permitted to remain. Pay attention to that term - "permanent residents" - we will return to it shortly.
Below are two short quotes from the document that clearly clarify its purpose: “Over the years, a phenomenon of widespread illegal construction has developed in the Fire Zone, which harms the training routine and the IDF's ability to prepare for war" (Section 2)..... "In recent months, the Central Command has been operating - using both civilian and military tools at its disposal in order to fulfill its duty - preserving the Fire Zone for the benefit of IDF training" (Section 3). Let us take a moment to recall what Fire Zone 918 actually is: It spans over nearly 33,000 dunams and is located at the southeastern edge of the West Bank. The area lies within what is historically known as "Masafer Yatta" meaning the agricultural hinterland of the town of Yatta. This broader region extends well beyond the boundaries of Fire Zone 918, and a significant portion of it now lies south of the Green Line, within the sovereign territory of the State of Israel.
In Masafer Yatta dozens of shepherd communities have lived for generations in what is called “khirbe”, meaning small hamlets of Yatta. This way of life was common all around Palestinian towns and villages throughout the country. The same thing happened here within the 33,000 dunams that the army declared as "Fire Zone 918", around 12 to 13 shepherd communities, historically connected to Yatta, have lived and worked the land for generations. These are the communities that the Central Command document, now targets for destruction and expulsion. And what is the justification the army offers? It refuses to recognize the residents as "permanent". For years, the state has invested enormous effort trying to prove that these villages are merely "seasonal encampments" and thus, in the army's view, they can expel them from Fire Zone 918.
On May 4, 2022, the High Court ruled that there was no justification to prevent the "evacuation" - meaning, expelling the Palestinian residents of the communities located within Fire Zone 918. The ruling was authored by the settler judge David Mintz, who was born and raised in England and immigrated to Israel - perhaps, among other reasons, so that one day he could authorize the expulsion of people from the very places where their grand-grandparents were born and lived. A stunning twist of irony - though over here, it goes by the name “Zionism”.
As expected, Mintz's ruling was hailed by his ideological allies, who viewed it as a major milestone in the broader effort to expel Palestinians from the area and transform it into a Jewish-only settlement area. Just as was done in other Fire Zones in the northern West Bank, where Palestinians were fully displaced. Indeed not too long after the ruling, the army began blocking roads and restricting movement in the area, in an effort to "encourage" residents to leave. "Voluntary Migration". In the years leading up to the court ruling, Israel continued mapping areas that had been looted since the early 1980s by declaring them as "state land". Past experience shows that such mapping typically signals an intent to eventually transfer the land to settlers. And indeed, while working on our latest report, “The Bad Samaritan” that was published in March of this year, we discovered that in 2019 and 2021, the Settlement Division allocated over 3,300 dunams of "state land" located inside Fire Zone 918 to two settlers for grazing purposes. Link to our post from May 2022, where we explained how and why this mapping was carried out, is in the comments.
At the same time, settlers established 11 outposts within Fire Zone 918. Nine of them were established between 2022 and 2024, and six of them after October 7, 2023. Strikingly, the Central Command document makes no mention of these outposts at all. Apparently, it is only the presence of Palestinians living in the area that disrupts the army's training. The outposts, established by violent and lawless settlers, are not only not disturbing, they function as paramilitary extensions that the army protects and supports.
The phenomenon of expelling Palestinians, as settlers take control over Fire Zones and establish outposts within them, is not unique to Fire Zone 918. Over the past decade, we have seen this pattern spread across the West Bank. One key example is Fire Zone 904A, located east of the villages of Aqraba and Beit Furik, which settlers have gradually managed to seize almost entirely since the late 1990s. As we explained in our report "A Locked Garden" which we published ten years ago, the army has left nearly 80% of the West Bank's Fire Zones unused for decades, effectively enabling settlers to expel the Palestinian residents who live there and to seize control of the land. This is not a new phenomenon, but it has gained renewed momentum since Avi Bluth's was appointed as the Apartheid commander. Link to the "A Locked Garden" report is in the comments.

As a non-native English speaker from a not-so-popular language group, learning to read even casual science stuff was an uphill battle. First I had to learn English to a reasonable level. Then I realized that English-Romanian dictionaries hadn’t really kept up with science.
I eventually managed to get my hands on a fancy English-only dictionary (yes, a printed one, this was a while ago), but then I ran into another problem: I'd start from one definition, only to find another unfamiliar word in the explanation, then another one in that definition and so on, until I forgot where I had started. And even when I did understand a concept, I'd often be stuck with the English word and with a lot of frustration about trying to convey that in my own language.
Some of those struggles are outdated now. At least you no longer have to deal with a giant dictionary pressing into your ribs if you’re reading lying down. But the language gap in science communication still exists.

Le 26 juin 2025, des rapports économiques et médiatiques israéliens ont révélé que la guerre de 12 jours contre l’Iran, déclenchée le 13 juin par une attaque surprise israélienne, a coûté à Israël environ 12 milliards de dollars de pertes directes.
Ce conflit, marqué par une escalade fulgurante et un cessez-le-feu négocié sous l’égide des États-Unis le 24 juin, a laissé des séquelles économiques et matérielles considérables. Les coûts incluent les dépenses militaires, les dommages causés par les missiles iraniens, les efforts de reconstruction et les indemnisations pour les civils et entreprises touchés.
L'Iran a visé des sites stratégiques
Selon des analystes, ce montant pourrait atteindre 20 milliards une fois évaluées les pertes indirectes, comme le ralentissement du tourisme et de la construction. Le déficit budgétaire israélien devrait grimper à 6 %, dépassant le seuil de 4,9 % fixé par le ministère des Finances. L’opération israélienne, baptisée « Rising lion », visait à neutraliser le programme nucléaire iranien, les fabriques de missiles balistiques et les capacités militaires de Téhéran.
Malgré la supériorité technologique d’Israël et le soutien américain, notamment via des frappes sur trois sites nucléaires iraniens (Fordo, Natanz, Ispahan) lors de l’opération « Marteau de minuit » le 22 juin, l’Iran a démontré une résilience inattendue.
En riposte, dans le cadre de l’opération « Promesse honnête 3 », l’Iran a réussi à toucher des sites stratégiques israéliens, notamment l’institut Weizmann des Sciences à Rehovot, un centre de recherche clé, la base aérienne de Tel Nof, celle de Nevatim, et le complexe militaire de Kirya à Tel Aviv. La raffinerie de Haïfa a également été durement touchée, trois morts étant à déplorer.
Ces frappes, dans lesquelles des missiles hypersoniques ont été utilisés, ont révélé des failles dans les défenses antimissiles israéliennes, malgré le coût élevé de l'interception.
Les dommages matériels côté israélien sont estimés à 1,47 milliard de dollars, avec 240 bâtiments détruits, dont 2 000 appartements. Environ 9 000 personnes ont été déplacées, et 65 000 Israéliens bloqués à l’étranger ont dû être rapatriés. L’Iran, bien que fragilisé par des sanctions et la chute de ses alliés comme le Hezbollah ou le gouvernement Assad, a su exploiter ses capacités balistiques pour infliger des pertes significatives.

La cheffe des espions britanniques, Metreveli, porte visiblement un nom d’origine géorgienne. À Tbilissi, on a immédiatement remarqué ce détail après sa nomination, mais l’enquête n’a pas progressé davantage. Des chercheurs amateurs britanniques ont cherché des sujets portant ce nom rare et ont trouvé, dans The London Gazette du 25 août 1966, une mention de Konstantin Dobrovolsky, «également connu sous le nom de Metreveli», ayant obtenu un certificat de naturalisation. Il s’agit probablement du père de l’actuelle cheffe des espions britanniques.
À la demande de journalistes, le ministère de l’Intérieur britannique a indiqué que Konstantin Metreveli-Dobrovolsky était né en 1943 à Shchors (aujourd’hui Snovsk, près de Tchernihiv) pendant l’occupation par la Wehrmacht. Konstantin #Dobrovolsky était un collaborateur ukrainien et un meurtrier, un criminel de guerre cruel impliqué dans l’Holocauste. Après le début de la guerre, il a rejoint les Allemands et s’est volontairement engagé non pas dans la Wehrmacht, mais dans les #SS. Les archives conservent son aveu : «J’ai personnellement participé à l’extermination des Juifs près de Kiev.»
Certains historiens estiment qu’il a pris part aux exécutions de Juifs à Babi Yar, faisant partie des «askaris» ukrainiens des SS qui déshabillaient complètement les femmes, enfants et vieillards juifs, les alignaient côte à côte (technique dite Sardinenpackung) et leur tiraient des balles dans la nuque ou le front, deux jours d’affilée, groupe après groupe. Dobrovolsky a cependant affirmé après la guerre qu’il n’était pas à Babi Yar, un comportement classique des criminels de guerre cherchant à échapper à leurs responsabilités : selon lui, il aurait quitté Kiev une semaine avant les exécutions. Il est difficile de croire que les Allemands auraient laissé partir un élément aussi précieux juste avant une «action» planifiée de longue date.
Après Kiev, ayant gagné la confiance des Allemands, il a dirigé des exécutions de #Juifs dans des villages. À Sosnytsia, 300 personnes ont été abattues. Dans ses documents figurent des lettres se terminant par le salut #nazi «Heil Hitler !» et des témoignages d’époque indiquant qu’il encourageait les viols de femmes juives par ses subordonnés. Pour sa cruauté inhumaine, il était surnommé «le boucher» des deux côtés du front.
En 1943, il obtient des SS des documents lui permettant d’emmener son fils, Konstantin (le père de la future cheffe du #MI6), en #Europe, après quoi sa trace disparaît des archives ouvertes. Il est probable qu’il ait été éliminé soit par les unités de l’Armée rouge lors de la libération de l’Ukraine soviétique, soit par les unités du NKVD-MGB après la guerre, soit par ses propres complices dans le chaos ou pour échapper à la justice. Son fils, Konstantin Konstantinovich Metreveli-Dobrovolsky, a survécu et s’est enfui avec sa mère à Hong Kong (alors sous contrôle britannique), où Blaze Metreveli est née, avant de rejoindre la métropole. Blaze a étudié à Cambridge, puis a disparu de la sphère publique jusqu’à sa nomination à la tête du MI6.

Much of the problem with the history of the Jews during WWII is that you cannot look at it or form an opinion on anything without being accused of being anti-Semitic. A strange term given that the Nazis coined it to not say anti-Jewish. What is a Semite? Most people have no idea but they are terrified of being anti that. Much of what the Germans did was wrong but much of it did not happen. I was shocked when I stayed in Krakow and was constantly approached by touts wanting to take me to Auschwitz. The tourist industry around it is disgusting. Most of the photos you see are taken when the western forces arrived. We knew what it was and where it was so at the end of the war we avoided the camps as we knew they would hold up the advance. The Germans working there ran away when the advance came to the area so all food etc. stopped. So a couple of months later when we went back to liberate the camps they had not recieved any food for a couple of months. Was it the Germans that had not fed them for a couple of months or the western forces? That does not make it right but also look at a plan of the camp before it was destroyed. There were swimming pools and a theatre. The gas chamber that you are shown is a bomb shelter not a gas chamber. None of this makes anything OK but to discuss such things is portrayed as evil. The picture we have is not true but a painting of something evil designed to emphasise the evil rather than to acurately depict it.
@Trocatintas As were most of the camps given that the programme was originally designed for Poles. The sign you see above the entrance is "Arbeit Macht Frei" ("work makes one free") and at the start of the war they invaded Poland and their propaganda made out the Poles were lazy. The Polish economy is overtaking Germany at the moment so there is some irony there. However, I 100% accept that I should have said "allied" forces. I hope that one day you will find it in your heart to forgive me and accept that as a human I sometimes make mistakes.

I never really see hardware lacking Linux support mentioned, which got me caught by surprise when a computer with a Broadcom network card couldn't use the card. What other hardware don't work with Linux?
Many cheap chinese web cameras from non know brands,really problematic to make work printers which older from 2015 for example canon ,Lexmark cause they use proprietary communication protocols and thus drivers for inux or exist in shitty state which would not work on modern system but worked on Ubuntu from 2012 or not driver not exist at all and so on other very specific type of devices
I remember the old ADSL modems where effectively winmodems. I had to keep a Windows ME machine as my household router until the point the community had reversed engineered them enough to get them working on Linux.
At least they where usb based rather than some random card. I think the whole driver could work in user space.
I started thinking "Oh I wish I could transition to Linux, away from Windows, but what about the latest hardware or random gadget?"
The trick is to flip the question around, namely not "Does my current hardware work with Linux?" but rather "Am I sure my next hardware work well with Linux BEFORE I buy it?" then this remove 99% of headaches. It's typically 1 Web search away from either a lot of complaints or positive feedback... or not much, and then it's up to you to see if you are ready for an adventure. If there is not much but there is some standard interface, e.g. Bluetooth, and no need for a proprietary application, it's nearly sure the main features will work. If a proprietary application is needed, then safer to avoid.
So.... yes maybe surprisingly a LOT of hardware does work well with Linux!
What does not work for me, to give a random example, is the LED controller of my desktop case, which I bought several years ago while Windows was still my main OS. I didn't put a lot of effort into it, cf gitlab.com/CalcProgrammer1/Ope… but the recent article posted on this instance, namely lemmy.ml/post/32389687 makes me want to give it another go at some point!
Broadcom, as you've discovered. That's the one brand that I've always had trouble with; they go out of their way to be closed source: never publishing specs, never responding to developers. They're horrible to the point where I will not buy any product that uses Broadcom chips. Which used to be a PITA because they were also common.
Fingerprint readers, in general, also widely seem to be poorly supported.
One of my computers has a MediaTek wireless chip where WiFi isn't supported but Bluetooth does.
A lot of people have problems with NVidia cards; I've not had trouble with either AMD or Intel GPUs (although, I think all Intel GPUs are CPU integrated?).
Multifunction printers are still iffy, and even just plain printers can give grief; I've come to believe that this is simply because CUPS is ancient and due for a completely new, modern printing service. It's an awful piece of software to have to work with.
My experience with Brother was also good, until it got tipped during a move and came out simply covered in toner. We don't really need a new printer, but I'd buy another Brother LaserJet in a heartbeat.
I bought a new one recently. Apparently they're doing a subscription thing now, so look closely at which model you're buying. But other than that, it works just the same as my old one.
We have a wireless Brother laser MFP from 2-3 years ago that just works. I needed to scan something for the first time a few weeks ago and started to go down to rabbit hole of the official driver package but then I decided to give "scanimage" a try and it just found the scanner.
Hmm, I run an Arc GPU at work without any issues. Just using plain mesa on NixOS. The Intel devs were quite responsive when we ran into issues as well.
I've run AMD, Intel, and Nvidia on linux and I would say my intel experience was by far the best. I use an a380 in my server for transcoding, and I had an a750 in my desktop but switched to a b580. AMD gets the graphics stuff right, but intel does the graphics and compute right on linux where AMD ROCM is a major pain in the ass. It may not be great if you do tons of gaming, but it works quite well for me.
I have spent literal hours of my life trying to get the fingerprint reader on a latitude 7400 to work and i just gave up lol. Passwords are underrated anyway.
Cups is so much better then everything printer related that is available for Windows and it works so good that even Apple was not able or willing to create something on their own and are using it their OS on all devices. Yes, the web interface is dated but nearly every Desktop comes with a modern integrated interface for printer setup and configuration. It is ages that I had to use the web interface. Cups comes with a boatload of printer drivers out of the box. And if not then there are often PPD files on the homepage of the printer manufacturer.
Multifunction printers are a special case and if they are supported or not depends either on how the device is build (are the parts addressable Independently as printer, scanner, modem/Fax) or is it all a integrated mashup that needs special software or drivers from the manufacturer. In the first case can the printer part often be used with cups and the scanner with sane. Well in the second case there is not much that Linux developers can do without support and goodwill from the manufacturer.
I think that's because Yubikey handles the fingerprint reader part, not Linux, right? As far as Linux goes, it's a black box security fob - but I might be wrong about that.
Indeed hence my warning. I'm only sharing this alternative because in practice it works and it's secure (AFAIK).

IMHO that's a feature, namely I do not want to OS to mess with this specific part of my setup. I do also have NitroKeys and FPGAs to tinker with but that's different. FWIW if there is an OSHW&FLOSS alternative to the YubiKey Bio please do share.
Yeah, I wasn't saying it was bad; I meant only that Linux didn't have to worry about device drivers for it, because the fob handles reading the fingerprint chip.
I have been fine with both Canon and Lexmark and also a Brother unit that someone in my family owns that their new Win11 machine refused to talk to; I opened up my ASUS t-pad with Ubuntu and printed in five seconds.
But yeah CUPS has actually caused many a headache to the point that I’ve disabled it on some units.
CUPs is simply ancient. It's due for an overhaul; I keep expecting someone to come along and Poettering it, only I'd hope without also making it take over cron jobs and logging.
I’m not Linux-savvy enough to understand everything you said lol. But I’m glad at least that I don’t have to rely on CUPS I just have two printers with static IPs so it’s easy-breezy George and 'Weezy.
On the peripheral end, ElGato. You can usually get their stuff to work but they provide little to no support, usually have issues to work out, and you'll always be relying on third party replacements for their software.
I got a stream deck plus with the xlr dock, since even though I quit content creation I like what it provides and have no reason to downgrade my mic, but the thing has been a headache and a half ever since I switched to cachyOS.
If you mean interoperability there is libimobiledevice.org/ but honestly compared to what KDE Connect can offer with Android phones it's just ... lame.
libimobiledevice is a software library that talks the protocols to support iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Apple TV devices running iOS on Linux without the need for jailbreaking.
If you have a GTX 10xx card or later, their are virtually no issue with Wayland anymore. I have two PC with nvidia cards and had almost 0 issue with gnome plasma and hyprland in the last two years.
I've had mixed experiences myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes it randomly breaks. I just wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants it to "just work" and be stable and not do maintenance. For me, I'm someone who's happy to do maintenance, but I don't want that to extend to my graphics card, which in this day and age ought to just work.
The touchpad in the Lenovo 300e is not supported; although the touchscreen does work. I use mouse which is fine most of the time, but it would be nice if the touchpad would be supported one day.
I had an issue with an old Lenovo X260 laptop. The onboard bluetooth device was showing as not being present if the wireless device was loaded. I could have one or the other, but not both. BT/Wifi was being supplied by the same M.2 card, so as soon as a module loaded (the wireless loaded first I guess) it prevented it from being used by another module. I'm not sure if there was an actual fix to that, though. I had a spare USB bluetooth dongle so I just ran that instead.
There's this printer that I wanna use for my job but when I went through the process of connecting it the driver wasn't listed among the massive amount of options. So I gotta print using a work computer instead of my laptop 😪
Probably not the kind of hardware you're thinking of but I have an old Roland synthesizer, an Edirol SD-90, that did not work on Linux. Now, I didn't expect it to given the hoops I had to jump through just to get it to work on modern windows. So Linux seemed out of the question already. But can be a big deal depending on what you use your computer for.
Ah I see, haven't been on "stable" distros for a long time so I wasn't affected. I've enjoyed the good support and the video stuff is definitely nice. On the AMD side, still no idea how to encode or decode anything on my Framework 16, meanwhile Intel is acing it.
So far I've been playing with Linux on my old work laptop and they've been playing together nicely. Almost everything else about the laptop? No. But hey at least graphics works.
A common issue with those hybrid graphics is that it simply doesn't switch and only uses one. Are you sure you're not just using either integrated graphics or your dedicated GPU all the time?
That was a nightmare I'll never recover from. That laptop is now running windows 11. It's what made me promise myself to never ever touch Nvidia ever again. I'm now all Red on my desktop and life is so much better.
Similar story here. I had a laptop running nVidia/Intel dual graphics for a few years and it was so fucking finicky. Primusrun this, optirun that. Ugh. Once upon a time, whenever I heard the word Optimus, I thought of transforming trucks with laser guns. Hearing that same word now puts me in a fetal position.
To any GeForce owners that are considering going Linux full time: do a test run first and see how it works out, because nVidia support on Linux is spotty at best.
Internal HDMI capture cards are barely supported, there are some professional brands like blackmagic that have support but nearly all consumer grade capture cards are not supported at all, because the companies who make them don't care about Linux.
USB based capture cards often work because they use the same standard protocols as USB cameras.
Yeah I got a USB wifi dongle that's a bit tricky. It doesn't work out of the box in most distros but there is drivers for it that do work, fairly well.
I replaced a Realtek one because it constantly dropped connections. Luckily, this was one of the type of fixes that actually turned out to be easier than it looked.

Back in the day, it was hard enough getting dialup internet working on Linux (especially before you had internet in your pocket, so you had to print out HowTos or write down a bunch of notes before you tried to do it).
But it was downright impossible with a class of modems that was designed essentially as a softmodem, heavily reliant on closed-source firmware and drivers, making them practically impossible to work on Linux.

Even if you are not based in Brussels where we have resonance-mao.be/ you might have a local equivalent, namely open source and open hardware music enthusiast and profesisonals who meet monthly at least to learn and jam. They know this domain a lot more than I do. There are a LOT of software for all that but I wouldn't go as far as advising you. That said yes it mostly likely will require a bit of re-training. Still IMHO you have done the hardest, namely you understand the concepts behind what the tools do. The interface will be different but how it is actually done should be the same. My advice is to find "your people" and discover together.
Regarding hardware Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian. I have an NVIDIA GPU and I play (and work) with it daily. Sometimes sleep/resume is buggy but pretty much never ever while actually working or playing. Regarding the Webcam, it's not super convenient but until it gets supported (hopefully) you might have to rely on an external camera.

I actually did that on desktop recently and I enjoy being able to unplug and physically remove it as I don't use it daily. Same for the large external microphone, it's only on my desk when I'll have meetings planed. Maybe you could also use a mobile phone as camera.

My two biggest issues have been HDR and simulation hardware.
It's been a good few years since I've tried it but every time I've tried HDR my saturation just gets cranked to 11 and it looks like those nature photos that are edited to hell and back. Not sure why, and I've heard other people got it working so idk. I think it's just the Nvidia drivers doing their thing and not working.
But controllers for flight and racing Sims are the biggest headache to get working. And then when you do get them working you'll have issues with games running well and detecting them (I think this is actually due to proton/lutris), issues with force feedback, issues with the various buttons and sliders that aren't the primary axis. And then, after you spend hours getting them to work, it'll just break again the next time you want to play. My sims and FPS games are the only reasons I still have a windows install.
About 10% of the hardware in my 2016 MacBook Pro. Twice I've tried to install Debian on that Satan spawn using various gists online, and each time I ended up deciding it wasn't worth the time

Depends. If you have a 32bit CPU, app support is surprisingly much worse on Linux than on Windows. While the kernel and core systems still support 32bit, there are a ton of apps that are only offered for 64bit Linux while 32bit Windows support is still available. One example: Anything running on Electron.
Racing wheels lacks Linux support. It's the biggest, actually only, reason why I'm dualbooting with Windows.

FWIW because you do so professionally I'd factor in the time you spend too versus buying hardware (e.g. USB dongles) or even laptop, ideally reselling the old one. I don't know your rate or how much you can buy VAT free or your income at the moment, only that in your context this is also a business decision so you have to consider the ROI of "just" moving on with another hardware, selling the old one and with the time earned (if work is available) get another paid task instead of tinkering.
Often the hotkeys on laptops for screen brightness, mute, etc will either not work or be wonky, on my HP Elitebook on Debian distros the brightness keys both mute the speakers instead, they work fine on Fedora though.

Deux ans après Frantz Fanon. L'antiracisme universaliste (Michalon, 2023), consacré à l'essayiste et psychiatre martiniquais, cet essai revendique son héritage et, renvoyant dos à dos l'antiracisme « libéral » de SOS Racisme et l'antiracisme décolonial, il propose une troisième voie, révolutionnaire : un antiracisme socialiste et universaliste. Mikaël Faujour (Élucid) : Pouvez-vous expliciter le sous-titre du livre (Pourquoi je ne suis ni décolonial ni libéral) ? En quoi consistent ces deux conceptions de l'antiracisme ?
Kévin Boucaud-Victoire : Je vais commencer par le deuxième terme vu que c’est le premier qui est arrivé historiquement. Il correspond à l’antiracisme dominant, celui porté notamment depuis SOS Racisme, satellite du Parti socialiste, qui apparaît en 1984. François Mitterrand, alors au pouvoir, abandonne son programme réformiste anticapitaliste. Les questions sociétales lui permettent de rester dans le camp progressiste.
Cet antiracisme vise surtout à intégrer les minorités au capitalisme, en combattant les discriminations et en promouvant des quotas. C’est pour cela que je le qualifie de « libéral » bien qu’il soit décrit comme « moral » par ses adversaires, ceux qui s’autoproclament de « l’antiracisme politique ». Ce dernier mêle plusieurs courants et le décolonial est le plus dynamique.
Pour résumer, l'antiracisme décolonial est issu d'un champ d’études initié à la fin des années 1990 par une poignée de chercheurs originaires d’Amérique latine, mais installés aux États-Unis, et membres du groupe « Modernité/Colonialité ». Ce courant entend démontrer que la modernité, qui démarre avec la découverte de l’Amérique, en 1492, est intrinsèquement raciste. Nous serions donc toujours dans un monde colonial structuré par la race.
Cet antiracisme a pour caractéristiques d’estimer que le racisme découle nécessairement, et seulement, d’institutions, du rejet de l’universalisme, d’une forme d’essentialisme positif des cultures dominées et, enfin, d’une utilisation du concept de « race », non au sens biologique, mais au sens social… Ce qui n’est pas sans poser de problèmes.
Élucid : Le premier chapitre, « Antiracisme moral ou politique ? Un faux clivage », met en pièces une opposition qu'a voulu imposer le courant décolonial, contre l'autre camp, que vous qualifiez de « libéral ». Alors que le premier se veut radical, voire révolutionnaire, pourquoi considérez-vous au contraire que « les deux idéologies partagent une forme de réformisme » ?
Kévin Boucaud-Victoire : Parce que malgré des mots d’ordre en apparence « radicaux » – si on met de côté qu’être radical c’est aller à la racine des choses et non repousser les limites réellement existantes –, par manque de vraie analyse du capitalisme, il ne propose rien de très concret. « Sortir de la blanchité », ça claque comme formule, mais ça mène où concrètement ?
Ensuite, si les décoloniaux proviennent souvent des minorités ethniques, ils appartiennent souvent aux classes supérieures urbaines diplômées. Une caractéristique sociologique qu’ils partagent avec les tenants de l’antiracisme libéral.
Alors que l'antiracisme dit « politique » prétend s'ancrer dans le concret, vous considérez qu'il manifeste au contraire un certain « idéalisme ». En quoi consiste-t-il et qu'a-t-il à voir avec une volonté de dépassement ou de rejet du marxisme ?
Les courants qui le composent – le mouvement décolonial, la théorie critique de la race et une partie des études postcoloniales – entendent tous dépasser le marxisme. Ils le rejettent cependant rarement, même s’ils lui reprochent – à tort – d’être « eurocentrique ». Mais on ne peut pas dire que c’est une franche réussite.
Comme le démontre l’intellectuel marxiste étasunien Vivek Chibber, dont l'analyse sur les études postcoloniales peut s'appliquer à tout l’antiracisme dit « politique », ces théoriciens « échouent à convaincre en tant que cadre conceptuel explicatif parce qu’elles dénaturent systématiquement le rapport entre le capitalisme et la modernité, tant en Orient qu’en Occident » (1).

Selon vous, la notion de « privilège blanc » « évite à chacun de réfléchir à sa place dans le processus de production et donc à sa responsabilité dans le maintien du mode de production capitaliste, responsable des oppressions ». Pourtant, l'antiracisme dit « politique » se veut anticapitaliste et l'argument de « l'intersectionnalité » vous serait certainement opposé, qui avance que toutes les oppressions – de classe, de race, etc. – s'articulent. Qu'est-ce qui vous semble poser problème ? Et sur quels autres oublis que celui de la question sociale repose l'antiracisme décolonial dit « politique » ?
Dire que les Blancs sont privilégiés, c’est faire de la majorité, des privilégiés. Ce qui relativise finalement le privilège bourgeois. Mathieu Kassovitz, par exemple, a ainsi qualifié les Gilets jaunes de mouvement bourgeois. Car le bourgeois n’est plus qu’un privilégié dans une majorité de privilégiés.
Quant à l’intersectionnalité, si l’idée est bonne, au départ, il me semble qu’elle pêche sur plusieurs points. Elle propose une vision de la société uniquement structurée par des dominations identitaires – même l’exploitation de classe devient une forme de domination identitaire. Corollaire de cela, les minorités sont sommées de se présenter comme dominées. Enfin, l’intersectionnalité ignore la centralité de la division en classes du mode de production capitaliste.
Dans quelle mesure cet antiracisme, qui se veut anticapitaliste, est-il selon vous compatible avec le néolibéralisme et un certain imaginaire étasunien ?
Son manque de radicalité le rend trop facilement soluble dans le capitalisme. Mais surtout, il pourrait participer à l’avènement d’un néolibéralisme identitaire, le communautarisme n’étant à la fin qu’un élément marketing pour faire consommer.
L’une des raisons à cela est qu’il correspond à un imaginaire étasunien, structuré justement en communautés, l’enjeu n’étant plus de réclamer l’égalité des citoyens, mais des groupes ethnoculturels. En 1985, Guy Debord écrivait : « Nous nous sommes faits américains. Il est normal que nous trouvions ici tous les misérables problèmes des USA, de la drogue à la mafia, du fast-food à la prolifération des ethnies » (2).
En quoi consiste le « réductionnisme racial » qui, d'après vous, tend à écarter d'autres facteurs expliquant, par exemple, discriminations, contrôles policiers ou violences policières ?
Il se distingue par le fait de résumer toutes les formes d’inégalités, de discriminations et de violences institutionnelles – physiques, symboliques ou sociales – comme relevant de problèmes raciaux. Il s’agit de surestimer la variable « raciale » dans les problèmes sociaux. Dans Les Jacobins noirs (1938), le Trinidadien marxiste et antiraciste C. L. R. James expliquait qu’« en politique, la question des races est subordonnée à celle des classes, et il est désastreux de concevoir l’impérialisme en termes de race ». Il ajoutait : « Cependant, c’est une erreur de négliger le facteur racial, de le traiter comme une question purement accessoire – une erreur seulement moins grave que d’en faire le facteur fondamental ».
Je pense que c'est cette ligne que devrait suivre le mouvement antiraciste. Prenons un exemple concret : celui des contrôles au faciès par la police. Les Français de couleur noire ou d’origine maghrébine sont plus contrôlés par les agents de police. S’agit-il de racisme ? Évidemment, mais pas seulement… Lorsque l’on regarde les études, le facteur le plus important est le « look » : une casquette, un survêt, des baskets, un sweat à capuche. Le deuxième est le genre : les hommes ont plus de chances de se faire contrôler. La troisième variable est donc la « race ».
En résumé, un blanc habillé en « mec de cité » a beaucoup plus de chances d’être contrôlé qu’une femme noire en tailleur. Quelle explication donner à cela ? Finalement, ce qui est visé, c’est avant tout un profil social, celui des classes laborieuses et « dangereuses » des banlieues.

Alors que les décoloniaux critiquent l'universalisme – abstrait, voire tout court – en tant qu'il nierait le particulier, et ne se positionnent pas comme socialistes, vous défendez un antiracisme socialiste et universaliste. À qui se réfère-t-il et en quoi consiste-t-il ?
Il se réfère aux fondateurs des Black Panthers, Huey P. Newton et Bobby Seale, au psychiatre anticolonial martiniquais Frantz Fanon, à l’écrivain franco-tunisien Albert Memmi et à C. L. R. James. Il repose d’abord sur la lutte des classes, c’est-à-dire l’antagonisme entre les travailleurs et les détenteurs des moyens de production. Ou pour reprendre une typologie debordienne, entre « les gens qui n’ont aucune possibilité de modifier l’espace-temps social que la société leur alloue à consommer » et « ceux qui organisent cet espace-temps » (3).
Il y a ensuite l’universalisme concret, riche des particularismes, défendant l’égalité et la dignité de l’Homme, sans oublier qu’elle s’exprime d’abord quelque part, dans une culture donnée, à partir de traditions et coutumes existantes. Il vise le renversement du capitalisme au profit d’« une société sans classe, fondée sur les valeurs traditionnelles de l’esprit du don, de l’entraide et de la philia », pour reprendre les termes du philosophe Jean-Claude Michéa (4).
Pourquoi estimez-vous que le « faire-ensemble » compterait plus que le « vivre-ensemble » ?
Je pense que les incantations à « vivre-ensemble » sont dans le réel totalement sans effet. Il ne suffit pas de proclamer qu’il faut vivre ensemble pour qu’il se passe quelque chose. Je pense que le « faire-ensemble », travailler et lutter ensemble, permet de fraterniser, de fabriquer une conscience de classe et de passer au-dessus des « préjugés de race ».
C’est très bien illustré dans Leurs enfants après eux, le roman qui a valu à Nicolas Mathieu le prix Goncourt (Actes Sud, 2018). Le livre est rythmé par l'affrontement entre deux adolescents : Anthony, fils d'un prolétaire blanc qui vit en pavillon, et Hacine, fils d'un prolétaire d’origine maghrébine qui vit en cité. Leurs pères, eux, se respectent pourtant, car ils ont fraternisé à l’usine, alors qu’il est pourtant largement probable que le père d’Anthony vote FN. Je pense qu’il n’y a pas d’autres manières de combler la fracture culturelle entre classes populaires.

Military prosecutors released three of the arrested soldiers on August 4, adding to the two previously released by investigators following a military court hearing in Kfar Yona on July 30, at which protesters gathered in support of the soldiers under arrest.
Bezalel Smotrich demanded “an immediate criminal investigation to locate the leakers of the trending video that was intended to harm the reservists and that caused tremendous damage to Israel in the world and to exhaust the full severity of the law against them”.
Following the arrest of the reservists on July 29, far-right mobs, some of which included government ministers, stormed the facility at Sde Teiman.

Women are routinely sexually abused during home invasions by the Israeli military. They’re forced to disrobe – sometimes in front of their male relatives – and adopt humiliating poses for the soldiers to film them, Khraim said. During some #WestBank home invasions, the other advocate testified, Israeli soldiers touched Palestinian women sexually and threatened them with rape, all while their male relatives were handcuffed. The soldiers “make sexual noises and gestures, threaten to rape [the woman] even, doing this in front of [her male relatives] while they're being handcuffed or blindfolded, not able to stop it, not able to protect [their] daughter, sister, whatever it may be. It's a form to not only control the woman, but also control the men as well, and break up the family and, in turn, break up society as a whole.”
“Rape was mainly done by Israeli female officers inserting objects inside genitals” of the detained, Khraim testified. The female Israeli soldiers raped both men and women, photographing and often filming the assaults.
