(AP) — "A #NativeAmerican tribe in North Dakota will soon grow lettuce in a giant greenhouse complex that when fully completed will be among the country’s largest, enabling the tribe to grow much of its own food decades after a federal #dam flooded the land where they had cultivated corn, beans and other crops for millennia.

"Work is ongoing on the #Mandan, #Hidatsa and #Arikara Nation’s 3.3-acre greenhouse that will make up most of the #NativeGreenGrow operation’s initial phase. However, enough of the structure will be completed this summer to start growing leafy greens and other crops such as tomatoes and strawberries.

" 'We’re the first farmers of this land,' Tribal Chairman #MarkFox said. 'We once were part of an aboriginal trade center for thousands and thousands of years because we grew crops — corn, beans, squash, watermelons — all these things at massive levels, so all the tribes depended on us greatly as part of the aboriginal trade system.'

"The tribe will spend roughly $76 million on the initial phase, which also will include a warehouse and other facilities near the tiny town of Parshall. It plans to add to the growing space in the coming years, eventually totaling about 14.5 acres, which officials say would make it one of the world’s largest facilities of its type.

"The initial greenhouse will have enough glass to cover the equivalent of seven football fields.

"The tribe’s fertile land along the #MissouriRiver was inundated in the mid-1950s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the #GarrisonDam, which created #LakeSakakawea.

"Getting fresh produce has long been a challenge in the area of western North Dakota where the tribe is based, on the #FortBerthold Indian Reservation. The rolling, rugged landscape — split by Lake Sakakawea — is a long drive from the state’s biggest cities, Bismarck and Fargo.

"That isolation makes the greenhouses all the more important, as they will enable the tribe to provide food to the roughly 8,300 people on the Fort Berthold reservation and to reservations elsewhere. The tribe also hopes to stock #FoodBanks that serve isolated and impoverished areas in the region, and plans to export its produce.

"Initially, the #MHANation expects to grow nearly 2 million pounds of food a year and for that to eventually increase to 12 to 15 million pounds annually. Fox said the operation’s first phase will create 30 to 35 jobs.

"The effort coincides with a national move to increase #FoodSovereignty among tribes."

Sie steigen um 3,4 %, was bei einer Inflation von 2,8 % eine reale Steigerung von 0,6% entspricht. Im #Jahresvergleich stiegen sie im legalen Bereich um 61 % gegenüber einer #Preissteigerung in den letzten 12 Monaten von 47,3 %. Das heißt real gut 12% mehr Lohn.

Auch die #Staatsbediensteten haben im Jahresvergleich real um 10% zugelegt. Allerdings hatten sie Anfang 2024 hohe Einbußen und liegen immer noch real rund 15% unter den Gehältern bei Amtsantritt.

Aber das eigentliche Highlight sind erneut die Löhne im informellen Bereich (Schwarzarbeit), in dem fast 50% ihr Geld verdienen müssen. REAL erneut 4,9% mehr Lohn in einem Monat. Das ist gigantisch, geht aber jetzt schon mehrere Monate so. Im Jahresvergleich haben sich die Löhne der Ärmsten real mehr als verdoppelt. Das heißt auch, dass es besser bezahlte Arbeit gibt.

Insoweit lassen eine die Zahlen zur gestiegenen #Arbeitslosigkeit etwas ratlos zurück. Meine einzige Erklärung ist, dass die freigesetzten #Bürokraten beim Staat, den #Gewerkschaften und den #Unternehmen nicht mehr gebraucht werden und auch nichts anderes können oder wollen. Dagegen ist produktive Arbeit gesucht und kann daher höhere Löhne durchsetzen. Der Regierungssprecher hat auch auf Saisionalität hingewiesen. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal seien es rund 200.000 mehr Arbeitsplätze. Das erklärt vielleicht den Rückgang zu Vormonat. Wir werden es ja sehen.

Die Aussage, dass Filme nur mit weiblichen Pferden gedreht werden, ist ein Mythos bzw. eine vereinfachte Darstellung. Es gibt jedoch einige praktische Gründe, warum in vielen Filmproduktionen oft Stuten (weibliche Pferde) oder Wallache (kastrierte männliche Pferde) bevorzugt werden:

  1. Wallache und Stuten sind ruhiger und besser kontrollierbar

Hengste (unkastrierte männliche Pferde) haben oft ein temperamentvolleres und dominanteres Verhalten, besonders in Gegenwart von Stuten. Das macht sie schwerer zu kontrollieren, was bei Filmaufnahmen ein Problem sein kann.

Wallache sind durch die Kastration in der Regel ruhiger und einfacher zu handhaben.

Stuten sind zwar zyklusabhängig manchmal launisch, aber meist berechenbarer als Hengste.

  1. Sicherheit am Set

Ein Filmset ist voll mit Menschen, Technik, Lichtern und oft lauter Geräuschkulisse. Pferde müssen in dieser Umgebung ruhig bleiben und präzise Anweisungen befolgen. Stuten und Wallache sind in der Regel zuverlässiger in solchen Situationen.

  1. Optik ist wichtiger als Geschlecht

In vielen Fällen ist es egal, ob das Pferd männlich oder weiblich ist – Hauptsache, es sieht so aus, wie es die Rolle erfordert. Die Zuschauer erkennen ohnehin selten das Geschlecht des Pferdes auf der Leinwand.

  1. Mehrfachverwendung eines Pferdes

Oft wird ein einzelnes Pferd durch mehrere Pferde "gedoubelt" (z. B. für Nahaufnahmen, Stunts etc.). Dabei müssen alle Pferde möglichst gleich aussehen. Da Hengste schwieriger mit anderen Pferden zusammenarbeiten, werden lieber Stuten oder Wallache für solche Gruppenarbeiten eingesetzt.

Fazit:

Es werden nicht ausschließlich weibliche Pferde in Filmen eingesetzt – aber Stuten und Wallache sind aufgrund ihres Verhaltens, ihrer Trainierbarkeit und der Sicherheit am Set meist die bessere Wahl. Hengste sind eher die Ausnahme, außer es ist für die Handlung oder eine besondere Szene notwendig.
