Here's a note about the Green Party:

"Cohn-Bendit ...was co-president of the group European Greens–European Free Alliance in the European Parliament....

Cohn-Bendit's 1970s writings on sexuality between adults and children later proved controversial in 2001 and 2013.[4] The same can be said of his statements to Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) that same year,[5] and his statements on the French TV show Apostrophes in 1982.[6]"

The George Marsaglia mental pseudorandom number generator method:

  • Think of a 2-digit 'seed' number.
  • Multiply the second digit by 6 and add it to the first number.
  • Repeat once.
  • Use the right-most digit of the new number as your random number.

If you chart the results using a spreadsheet you can see a weak pattern emerge but it's not easily human-predictable, which is what makes it useful to me.

"So here is us, on the raggedy edge.”

This line crept up on me during a nostalgic (re)viewing of Joss Whedon’s 2005 sci-fi film Serenity, last week: suddenly, the discomforting realisation that the several thousand words I’ve written as updates over the past couple of years could have been distilled to just these eight:

“So here is us, on the raggedy edge.”

Plus, maybe, two more: “Help us.”

As I wrote in a recent update, our days have been spent readying Wrack and ourselves for the open sea. An unexpected windfall from an Australian donor made it possible to lay in a month’s supply of expensive prescription medications for Given and to order a much-needed electronic self-steering unit for Wrack (probably the most exciting — and essential — upgrade aboard the boat since we bought her, two years ago). However, we are still ruinously short of funds. Which is to say, we have no funds. We need take on a couple of weeks of provisions along with 155 litres of diesel and another canister of campinggaz to get us across the Mediterranean.

One by one, our dock neighbours have left us to head to warm seas off fashionable Spanish and Portugues tourist destinations. We won’t be joining them. Instead, we’ll sail for a day or two north-east along the Spanish coast, getting used to being untethered from the shore again, before we turn east to sail non-stop across several hundred nautical miles of open sea.

The search for a home that we once imagined as simple (if often uncomfortable) has turned into a real-life Odyssey. Everything about the voyage ahead is ill-defined and ill-equipped. We are afraid and uncertain — who wouldn’t be? We have no home in our head to return to. We have to sail on.

“So here is us, on the raggedy edge.” Again.

Please help us if you can.

#UK / Streeting condemns anti-IDF chants while ignoring IDF’s ‘Killing Fields’ in Gaza

While condemning chants against the IDF (Bob Vylan led chants of 'Death, death to the IDF' during their set at Glastonbury) and criticizing settler violence in the occupied West Bank, health secretary seem to be deliberately ignoring #IDF’s systematic execution of unarmed Palestinians waiting for food aid in Gaza. His call for Israel to “get its own house in order” is somewhat cynical if not grotesque when measured against “Operation Salted Fish”—where Israeli soldiers were reported to have deliberately fired artillery and mortars at starving civilians, killing hundreds, in what one soldier called “a killing field.”

Like many Western politicians Streeting has mastered the art of compartmentalized condemnation which enables ongoing atrocities by focusing on peripheral violence, while refusing to name the core problem, which is the brutality of #Israel’s death machine which the UK and other Western countries enable.

#GazaGenocide / Operation "Salted Fish" : Israeli soldiers deliberately fire at Palestinians seeking aid at distribution sites, Haaretz investigation reveals

An investigation by #Haaretz reveals that Israeli soldiers have deliberately fired at Palestinians near aid distribution sites in Gaza over the past month, with commanders ordering troops to shoot at crowds to disperse them despite posing no threat. According to official numbers published by the Gaza's Health Ministry, 549 people have been killed and over 4,000 wounded near aid centers since May 27.

Soldiers described the situation as a "killing field" and "total breakdown" of military ethical codes, with one calling it "Operation Salted Fish" - firing live ammunition, mortars, and grenades at hungry civilians waiting for food.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation operates four distribution centers that open for just one hour daily. Soldiers report firing at people who arrive early or remain after closing, with no return fire documented. Private contractors receive payment for each house demolished, bringing forces closer to aid distribution points and creating additional shooting incidents.

haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-0…

While the Military Advocate General has ordered investigations into suspected war crimes at aid sites, human rights organizations including Amnesty International have criticized Israel's military justice system for lacking independence and impartiality. Investigations typically focus on individual soldiers rather than examining broader military policies or command decisions, with limited transparency and many cases closed without prosecution or disciplinary action.

Israeli soldiers nicknamed their activity around Gaza aid distribution sites [death traps] "Operation Salted Fish" after the Israeli version of the children's game "Red light, green light." Like in the children's game where players must stop moving when "red light" is called, Palestinians approaching food distribution sites face live fire when they're not supposed to be there, and can only approach safely when the "green light" is given (when the distribution center opens). The soldiers are essentially treating starving civilians seeking food like players in a deadly version of a children's game - shoot to stop them from moving forward, then allow them to approach only during the designated hour when distribution occurs.

[follow up] Punk duo Bob Vylan has been banned from entering the US.

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who has Jewish heritage, stated that the decision to cancel the band’s US tour follows their “hate speech” during a performance. The band’s tour, which was planned for later this year, has been canceled. The comments have been criticized by Glastonbury, the BBC, the Prime Minister, and Israel’s UK embassy.

manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ne…

Reminder, if needed: Bob Vylan’s chants of “Free Palestine” and “Death to the IDF” at Glastonbury triggered immediate government investigations, visa bans, BBC inquiries, and widespread condemnation from officials including the Prime Minister and Culture Secretary. Meanwhile, the documented destruction in #Gaza - with tens of thousands killed, widespread displacement, and infrastructure systematically destroyed by the very same #IDF - receives far less urgent governmental response or calls for accountability.

According to expert analysis the IDF has killed more than 75,000 people in Gaza up to January 2025. kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/1147…

#GazaGenocide / Study estimates 75,200 Palestinians killed by Israel as of January 2025

Michael Spagat, an economics professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, specializes in quantitative analysis of war and mortality. His research on the Gaza conflict, including a study surveying 2,000 households, estimates that approximately 75,200 Palestinians died violent deaths as of January 2025, primarily due to Israeli munitions. This figure is higher than official Gaza Ministry of Health counts.

Abstract

High-quality war mortality estimates, such as those that were produced for Kosovo, Iraq, and Darfur play a critical role in illuminating the human cost of war. During the tumult of war they are, however, challenging to obtain due to the conflicts themselves. The Gaza Ministry of Health (GMoH) has provided regular updates to their post-October-7 violent death tally for the Gaza Strip. However, GMoH reports have attracted both criticism and support. Here, we present results from a large-scale household survey, the Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS), which provides independent estimates of war-related deaths between October 7, 2023 and January 5, 2025. Our findings suggest that violent mortality has significantly exceeded official figures. Our central estimate for the extent of GMoH undercount closely matches a separate estimate made using capture-recapture methods. We also find that nonviolent excess deaths, often overlooked in conflict assessments, also represent a substantial burden. These results underscore the feasibility of mortality surveillance methodologies in some highly challenging war-affected settings and provide a crucial empirical foundation for assessing the true human cost of the war.

[…] “We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people,” they said. “[We] are not the story. We are a distraction from the story. And whatever sanctions we receive will be a distraction.

[…] “The government doesn’t want us to ask why they remain silent in the face of this atrocity? To ask why they aren’t doing more to stop the killing? To feed the starving?”

A government or broadcaster who is not offended by the intentional, deliberate, and revengeful massacre of civilians in #Gaza by the IDF cannot be offended by people who refuse to look away. Israelis are not the victims in this story; they are the problem and what the fuck does it have to do with Jewish employees of the BBC? Are they British or Israeli? The real crime is refusing to let the Palestinian people exercise their rights after 77 years of occupation. IDF makes sure it will never happen. The BBC should be busy exposing Gaza, Israel, and their own government’s actions, not covering up for them.

Communities not existing on all instances is a big problem.

Example, Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world have duplicate communities aren't connected at all. So we are artificially isolating groups more and making it confusing for would be converts.

Short and too the point

One of the things that I'm experimenting with is to have "communities that can follow communities". So, if community A follows community B, then it can re-post anything that has happened on Community B.

If you do it "properly", it doesn't even need to be a lot of data duplication because the "follower" community would just be creating Announce activities.

The only thing that is making me hold out on this experiment is because I am 100% sure that some people will see their posts on a community they never interacted on and they will panic on the grounds of "mah privacy" or something silly like that.

Re: Communities not existing on all instances is a big problem.

Hi! We should chat.

NodeBB also does this, and currently still does. A category (group actor) can follow another category (also a group actor).

It essentially is synchronization of categories using 1b12.

Proof of concept does work but it needs reworking in some ways. The largest issue is that Lemmy itself doesn't understand when a group actor tries to follow a community.

Don't hold out out of that. There are idiots everywhere and they should not be taken as a good driving force for anything.

Half the point of the Fediverse is that your activity is public. It's the entire point of why have activity with a community or instance in the first place. Heck, it's "kinda" the name of the protocol: "ActivityPub".

»The blame is not only theirs. Nor is it only the blame of reckless commanders such as Brig. Gen. Yehuda Vach, who already demonstrated his monstrous values when he turned the Netzarim corridor into a death trap and is suspected of destroying a hospital without approval.

The blame lies with the people who have not put an immediate stop to this policy – the chief of staff, the DM and the PM. If they don't desist, they are declaring themselves as individuals suspected of committing genocide.«

»"Gaza is a parallel universe,"
This is the crux of the matter, the matter of genocide.
Gaza is not a parallel universe. Gaza is the face of the IDF and the State of Israel.
What happens in Gaza will not remain in Gaza, even though most Israeli media outlets wish it so. What happens in Gaza defines Israel in the world, and what happens in Gaza will define Israeli society for many years to come. When Israel is declared a genocidal state, then it is the one that will become a parallel universe.«

How to undo Firefox changes to the titlebar controls buttons?

Firefox seemingly very recently shipped their own titlebar controls buttons, which worsens even further the lackluster OS integration. In the screenshot you see my regular control buttons on the window to the left (default KDE Plasma theme) and the new custom buttons Firefox is serving now.

Would anyone know how to undo that change in about:config or anywhere else?
