Small transfer-slot between the two fireboxes at the bottom.
Below each firebox is an ash box, a small exhaust transfer slot is at the outside edge between the firebox and the ash box below it.
Intake air enters at the top of one of the two fireboxes, exhaust exits via one of the two ash boxes.
A set of valves selects which firebox gets intake air and which ash box gets exhaust vacuum.
Intake left, exhaust right makes the left firebox downdraft and the right firebox cross-draft. Green arrow shows this. Obviously inverting the intake and exhaust side swaps the roles.
Freshly added wood goes on the downdraft side, where pre-heated intake air bakes the moisture out of the wood. Steam from the fresh wood transfers to the cross-draft side where hot coals pull oxygen from the air and steam, creating flammable carbon monoxide and hydrogen gasses.
When the cross-draft side burns down to a small bed of coals, the direction of flow is reversed, the cross-draft side becomes the down-draft side, and it can be re-filled with fresh wood.

"Seventy-six companies have bid to develop Europe's artificial intelligence gigafactories, the EU's tech chief said on Monday, hailing a bigger than expected response to the bloc's push to catch up with the U.S. and China in this key #technology.
The #European Commission made the announcement four months after it allocated 20 billion euros ($23 billion) in EU funding for the construction of four AI gigafactories across the bloc.
Such facilities, in essence large-scale AI computing and data storage hubs, will be equipped with about 100,000 state-of-the-art AI chips.
"We got 76 submissions proposing to set up #AI gigafactories in 16 member states and across 60 different sites," EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen told a press conference.

“The total number of arrests stands at 10,000 in the West Bank and Jerusalem,” the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), and Addameer Association for Human Rights said in a joint brief released Monday.
Since 7 October, 345 women and 700 children have been imprisoned in the occupied #WestBank and #Jerusalem, according to the brief.

Israel has opened an underground #prison for detainees from #Hamas and #Hezbollah groups where they are denied access to sunlight, according to Israeli media cited by the Anadolu news agency.
According to the Israeli public broadcaster KAN, the facility, located in central #Israel, is designed to house “the most dangerous individuals” from Hamas’s elite forces and Hezbollah’s Radwan Unit.
“This is their natural place, underground,” far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oversees the police, reportedly told KAN.
The broadcaster said some 75 detainees were currently being held at the underground prison.
“Even the small window in the ward has been sealed off for the detainees,” it added.
Describing the conditions in the underground prison as harsh, KAN said detainees there are shackled and confined to their cells for 23 hours a day.

An Israeli reserve soldier has exposed shocking abuses at the Sde Teiman detention camp in the Negev desert, describing it as a “sadistic torture site” where dozens of Palestinian detainees from Gaza died under brutal conditions.
The soldier described Sde Teiman as a place where “people enter alive and leave in body bags.” He said the death of detainees was no longer surprising. “The real surprise,” he added, “is if someone survives.”

Three more #Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip have been announced dead in Israeli detention, raising the death toll to 69 since October 2023, prisoner rights organizations said on Thursday.
Their deaths were confirmed in responses sent by the Israeli military to Palestinian #humanrights organizations, which provided only the dates of death without further details regarding the circumstances of their deaths, WAFA reported.
...They stressed that the plight of Palestinian detainees from #Gaza has revealed “unprecedented levels of violence and atrocities,” including reports of torture, starvation, medical neglect, and sexual abuse.
The organizations accused Israel of carrying out systematic “slow killing” practices in its detention facilities, citing the spread of disease, such as scabies, as a method of torture and neglect. They stated that medical negligence, #torture, and starvation are central causes behind the rising death toll.
Holding Israel fully responsible for the deaths, the organizations renewed their call for an independent international investigation into the deaths of detainees and for the international community to take effective measures to hold Israeli leaders accountable.

One more Palestinian detainee dies in #Israeli custody
A #Palestinian administrative detainee has died at Israel’s Soroka Hospital, according to the Palestinian authorities.
Lo’ay Faisal Nasr-Allah, 22, died at the hospital where he was transfered to from from Negev Prison, Wafa news agency said in a report quoting the Civil Affairs Commission in the occupied territory.
It added that the detainee was from the occupied #WestBank governorate of #Jenin, adding that he was held under administrative detention since March 26 last year.

20-year-old Palestinian administrative detainee Ahmad Tazaaz'a, from Jenin, died yesterday in the Israeli prison of Megiddo. His family says he had no prior health issues prior to his detention nine months ago.
His death brings the death toll among detainees to 76 since the start of Israel's genocidal war on #Gaza, during which extreme violence, including #torture and #starvation, has been widely used against the detainees.
