Israeli forces on Monday bombarded homes, schools and a seafront rest area in northern Gaza, killing at least 75 people, according to local health officials.

More than 40 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit a cafe near the port in Gaza City, according to the head of the territory’s largest hospital.

As Israeli strikes on the enclave continue the UN has described the situation in Gaza as "dire".

It Was Never About Iran's Nuclear Weapons eir.news/2025/07/news/it-was-n…

Speaking at the "Genocide in Gaza" conference, British-Israeli journalist Rachel Shabi delivered a scathing critique of Western media’s role in shaping public perception of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

She argued that mainstream outlets have not only failed to report the ongoing atrocities with accuracy and integrity, but have actively enabled the war through omission, distortion, and dehumanisation.

Had my talk on Small Web accepted at #why2025 but I hadn’t realised (my bad) that not only do you have to cover your own travel and accommodation but you also have to buy a ticket to speak. I’m sorry, as part of a tiny two-person not-for-profit working for the common good, I can’t afford to pay to speak at events. I’m not Deloitte. So I sadly had to withdraw my talk.

If any conferences do want to hear about the Small Web and are willing to support our work by paying us to speak about it, please feel free to get in touch:

understandable.

Just want to make sure that you're aware of this option & as a signal towards @why2025camp that in these times prices like this prevent people from attending & contributing.

I know the organizers try to keep expenses low. Sadly organizing anything in NL has become prohibitively expensive & requires jumping through lots of bureaucratic hoops. Cumulative inflation rose to 25% since 2020. Had my doubts on attending due to ticket prices & additional costs as well.

in reply to @BjornW@mastodon.social

When we organised the Indie Tech Summit¹ – an international conference with zero sponsors that we funded entirely through ticket sales – we made sure our priority was that we could break even while at the very least paying speakers travel and accommodation. We treated them like royalty, even picking them up from the airport. It’s really about priorities. No one ever says they’re not going to pay the venue or the catering staff, or, worse, that they’re going to ask the catering staff and the venue to pay them. But for some reason with speakers – especially those who do not work in Big Tech or the mainstream – it’s apparently fine. I don’t enjoy living under capitalism but if we’re going to move to a post-capitalist future, it’s not going to happen by making those of us working on the alternatives that respect and protect human rights and democracy poorer for the privilege of attempting to inform people about their existence.

Thanks for sharing.

Traditionally the concept of Dutch hacker camps was: everyone is a volunteer & everybody has to contribute to the camp incl buying a ticket. In that sense it was different from conferences. My first one in 1997 even had a communal kitchen, dinner was included & afair everyone helped out incl speakers. It was a community effort.

This spirit is still alive @why2025camp, but expectations, people, prices & the world has changed. Maybe the camps should adjust to this?

in reply to Aral Balkan

Afair there were hardly any sponsors, perhaps some local network or hosting companies & probably with in in-kind stuff like an uplink to the Internet.

Some editions ago this has changed. However afaik sponsoring & the type of sponsors was/is a controversial topic. I've heard that without sponsoring it would be neigh impossible to have an event like this & of this size in NL in 2025. My experiences with smaller events in NL skews towards this sad conclusion as well. 😔

@why2025camp

in reply to Aral Balkan

that seems utterly bonkers to me.

Reminds me of an emerging talent competition for a music festival in Iceland. Pay a small fee, submit sample song and a load of info, panel of judges selects the winners who all play on the emerging talent stage at the festival. What's not to like. Luckily I read the small print which mentioned that winners have to pay all travel, accommodation and food/drink expenses.

Mastering Corporate Governance for Singapore Companies

Effective corporate governance is about making informed decisions, clearly defining responsibilities, and addressing risks before they become serious problems.

Running a business in Singapore involves more than just meeting filing deadlines. Effective corporate governance is about making informed decisions, clearly defining responsibilities, and addressing risks before they become serious problems.

For companies, especially private limited ones, strong governance reduces legal risks, builds investor trust, and ensures operational efficiency. Here's a practical guide to getting it right.

Understand Your Legal Obligations

Every company registered in Singapore must comply with the Companies Act, which outlines directors' duties: act in the company's best interest, avoid conflicts, and maintain accurate records. Non-compliance can lead to fines or directorship disqualification.

Corporate secretarial services are vital for meeting these requirements. They handle tasks like filing annual returns, drafting resolutions, and ensuring records are accurate and accessible. This isn't just about compliance—it's about protecting your business.

The Crucial Role of a Company Secretary

Singapore law requires every company to appoint a company secretary. This role goes beyond administrative tasks, involving expertise in meeting protocols, ACRA submissions, and compliance with the company's constitution.

Many businesses opt for outsourced corporate secretarial services. This approach is often more cost-effective and ensures a qualified professional keeps things in order, particularly for smaller teams.

Make Board Meetings Effective

Board meetings are more than a legal obligation—they're where strategy is set and risks are identified early. Skipping or rushing them can lead to undocumented decisions and unclear accountability.

Even small boards with a few directors benefit from regular, documented meetings. This ensures alignment and supports the company's growth.

Balance Power and Oversight

In smaller companies, one person might serve as director, shareholder, and manager. While legal, this can lead to unchecked decisions or oversights.

Where possible, separate these roles or ensure key decisions are reviewed by another party. A second perspective on contracts or finances can prevent errors and maintain balance.

Communicate With Shareholders

Shareholder disputes often arise from miscommunication or missing records. These are avoidable. Keep your share register updated, document ownership clearly, and notify shareholders about meetings or major decisions.

These steps are mandated by Singapore law and often managed by a company secretary. However, it's your responsibility to ensure they're done correctly.

Prioritize Accurate Recordkeeping

A common mistake is assuming records are being maintained when they're not. Missing documents can complicate fundraising or business sales.

Ensure your company has:
- An up-to-date constitution
- Accurate registers
- Resolutions for key decisions
- Proper financial statements

Many corporate secretarial services in Singapore offer digital storage solutions—use them and review records periodically.

Anticipate Potential Risks

Good governance means thinking about what could go wrong. Consider:
- Are you monitoring cash flow?
- Is customer data secure?
- What's the plan if a key employee leaves?

You don't need a formal risk committee to address these. Regular discussions about potential risks can keep your business prepared.

Stay Informed on Regulatory Changes

Singapore's regulations are clear but evolve over time. Deadlines shift, new reporting standards emerge, and incentives change.

A reliable secretarial services Singapore provider will notify you of relevant updates. If managing compliance in-house, ensure someone tracks changes from ACRA, IRAS, or MOM. Ignorance isn't a valid excuse.

Final Thoughts

Corporate governance doesn't need to be complex—it just requires consistency. Clear roles, accurate records, and proactive risk management strengthen your business, whether you're scaling or staying compliant.

A capable company secretary, whether in-house or through corporate secretarial services, is more than a legal necessity. They're a key partner in ensuring compliance and clarity.

I found non-invasive ads exceedingly rare in recent years. I sometimes tried putting certain sites from creators I want to support on allowlists and always went back almost immediately because the ads were so invasive. I'd rather donate to content than view ads, even $0.5 is probably worth years of consuming most ad-paid content, considering how little ads actually pay per visitor.
