What if things you wanted came true in the worst possible way?
I was 12 years old in 1974, the year Watergate unfolded on America's television screens. I've been interested in politics ever since. Watergate and Vietnam are a frame that still affects my vision of politics today.
The utter immorality of the war in Vietnam and the clear violations of law and ethics in Nixon's election rigging seemed to be crimes worthy of strict, harsh punishment and yet... nothing changed. I watched and protested and voted and marched and 50 years passed and a convicted felon got elected.
I hate it. But I always wanted the CIA to get reduced. I always wanted US influence in the world to wane. Suddenly, the EU is moving away from its long dependance on American military. I always wanted Wall Street to mean less in the world. Now, the US markets are becoming untenable for the world's money. I 'm getting so many things I wanted and I hate it.
I hate it because it is going to come at the cost of people who are innocent being chewed up in the fascist machine. I hate it because children are suffering. I hate it because I have friends and family in fear, through no fault of their own, for no reason other than rank bigotry. I hate that people I thought were friends turned out to be perfectly fine with fascism.
If there is a silver lining, I guess it's that there is no going back to "normal" at this point. The media might convince Americans that it can, even that it is.
But the world knows now that they have to find a different path. That's something.

I know the organizers try to keep expenses low. Sadly organizing anything in NL has become prohibitively expensive & requires jumping through lots of bureaucratic hoops. Cumulative inflation rose to 25% since 2020. Had my doubts on attending due to ticket prices & additional costs as well.
When we organised the Indie Tech Summit¹ – an international conference with zero sponsors that we funded entirely through ticket sales – we made sure our priority was that we could break even while at the very least paying speakers travel and accommodation. We treated them like royalty, even picking them up from the airport. It’s really about priorities. No one ever says they’re not going to pay the venue or the catering staff, or, worse, that they’re going to ask the catering staff and the venue to pay them. But for some reason with speakers – especially those who do not work in Big Tech or the mainstream – it’s apparently fine. I don’t enjoy living under capitalism but if we’re going to move to a post-capitalist future, it’s not going to happen by making those of us working on the alternatives that respect and protect human rights and democracy poorer for the privilege of attempting to inform people about their existence.
Traditionally the concept of Dutch hacker camps was: everyone is a volunteer & everybody has to contribute to the camp incl buying a ticket. In that sense it was different from conferences. My first one in 1997 even had a communal kitchen, dinner was included & afair everyone helped out incl speakers. It was a community effort.
This spirit is still alive @why2025camp, but expectations, people, prices & the world has changed. Maybe the camps should adjust to this?

Some editions ago this has changed. However afaik sponsoring & the type of sponsors was/is a controversial topic. I've heard that without sponsoring it would be neigh impossible to have an event like this & of this size in NL in 2025. My experiences with smaller events in NL skews towards this sad conclusion as well. 😔
Reminds me of an emerging talent competition for a music festival in Iceland. Pay a small fee, submit sample song and a load of info, panel of judges selects the winners who all play on the emerging talent stage at the festival. What's not to like. I do think it is most likely true that one's gender and sexuality is not set at birth but instead emerges later for most people. I mean twin studies for one thing. Doesn't mean it's a choice though.
Considering gender is a social construct it can't exist till a person has assimilated the information needed to create the construction.
Them figuring out where they sit inside of that construction is the tricky part.
Sexuality is hard to say, but considering observation in preferences among other species it's likely to not manifest fully till an organism goes though their equivalent of puberty.
So in either case there's basically no real argument that either is from birth. But also there's even less of an argument that it's a conscious choice. It's a manifestation of the chemicals and/or the perception of the person. Depending on which of the two your talking about.
Now if we talking about biological sex. Then yeah your born with the bits you have. Don't mean you can't have them changed. Or disagree with the social expectations of gender commonly associated with those bits. Thank you modern medicine and fuck expectations!
Pretty sure science does have evidence that there is heavy influence from how someone grows? Obviously how someone is raised can change their attitude towards identities, even as far as making ignorant people closet and resent themselves without even truly knowing why.

Blackness is a social construct, too. You might be born with darker skin, but a lot (if not most) black people in the USA are very visibly mixed race and even if they weren't, it still doesn't follow that they automatically need to have all these socioeconomic issues and stereotypes attached to them.
The opposite is true. If you're gay, God made you that way for a damn good reason! Who are you to question His will? It is a mortal sin for a gay man to sleep with a woman!
Only if he sleeps with a woman because he likes it. Lots of gay men sleep with women to avoid the stigma of being a known homosexual (and/or being in denial and/or internalized homophobia).
Wait, christianity doesn't approve of sex for pleasure, and many of these gay men in denial genuinely like their wives (just not sexually). Carry on, then.
As a christian, it deeply saddens me to see oyher people who call themselves "christians", yet they spread hate and antipathy, going agaisnt basically everything that Jesus taught.
I like to imagine I'm not overly susceptible when it comes to marketing but maybe I'm just lucky most of the market doesn't cater to my childlike whimsy.
I'm less susceptible to marketing because I always have adblockers active (where at all possible)! Most people don't even see the fact that they subject themselves to ads as issues, even after you show them how easy it is to set up adblockers in a webbrowser.
But this kind of marketing, it can't be easily blocked ...
I found non-invasive ads exceedingly rare in recent years. I sometimes tried putting certain sites from creators I want to support on allowlists and always went back almost immediately because the ads were so invasive. I'd rather donate to content than view ads, even $0.5 is probably worth years of consuming most ad-paid content, considering how little ads actually pay per visitor.

Suddenly, the EU is moving away from its long dependance on American military. I always wanted Wall Street to mean less in the world. Now, the US markets are becoming untenable for the world's money. I 'm getting so many things I wanted and I hate it.

I hate it because I have friends and family in fear, through no fault of their own, for no reason other than rank bigotry. I hate that people I thought were friends turned out to be perfectly fine with fascism.

Kent State/Cambodia was the turning point for me and I have studied/worked for a different international role for the CIA and the US in general the more I learned. But I naively assumed that new role would be a result of increasing compassion and knowledge rather than the opposite of that.
