there are a few HEMA clubs that I go to that don’t bring up any affiliation one way or another. I enjoy it because these clubs have a culture of leaving differences at the door in order to just fight and train with each other. Christians, queers, nerds and jocks, there is mutual respect to just get together and learn the art.
It does appear HEMA has more progressive practitioners than other combat arts, but I also personally know many fighters that identify as conservative or independent that just keep to themselves so its hard to know what the demographic is truly like overall. In my opinion, it does you no good to only fight people that ideologically agree with you. You improve the most when you fight as many different people as possible and I think there is nothing wrong with trying to be friends with people of walks of life. Jesus ate with criminals, outcasts and deviants. All were invited.

The main event in Ubuntu 24.04 is GNOME 46, it you improved notifications, that can be expanded, or collapsed, and they'll now show a little symbolic icon next to their title. More interesting, you get experimental support for variable refresh rate. It's not enabled by default, you'll need to use dconf to turn it on.
Fractional scaling also got better, with fonts now looking less blurry and properly aligned when using fractional scaling, and you can now login to a GNOME user through RDP, instead of having to remote into a session where someone was already logged in.
Nautilus, the file manager, now finally lets you edit the file path by clicking on the path bar, it will also search faster, and through the entire filesystem by default now, file transfers are now moved to the sidebar, and you can also change a folder's icon from the properties panel of that folder. Finally, you also get a new option to change how dates are displayed.
The main system Settings changed a bit as well, with a new "system" page, default apps have been merged into the main "apps" settings page, which also includes the default actions you can configure when you insert removable media.
The mouse and touchpad settings now let you configure how you trigger the right click, and there's a new mouse test page to make sure these settings work for you. You can also turn off the touchpad when typing.

If you think the Democrats are going to save us, think again. California’s state assembly, overwhelmingly Democratic, just passed a new fascistic censorship and government control bill, AB715, with 100% unanimous support.
The bill claims to protect public school students from antisemitism and islamophobia. In reality, it simply suppresses free speech of students and staff. It’s definition of antisemitism is so broad that it will likely lead to an official policy equating anti-Zionism, and criticism of Israel, with antisemitism.
It prohibits schools from using any instructional material the state finds discriminatory, which will likely lead to bans and erasures of maps and distortions of curriculum on Palestine, Kurdistan, and Arab and Muslim history, in general.
The law would create the state’s first “Antisemitism Czar,” a new bureaucratic arbiter of what is acceptable speech and curriculum versus what is to be considered “antisemitic.”
Teachers, staff, and board members would be subject to rapid and severe consequences should the state find them in violation of this new law. Not only is this a severe restriction on academic freedom and the ability of teachers to teach the historical facts to their students, but it’s a violation of teachers’ rights to due process and to protection from vindictive and arbitrary discipline. No where does it state that a teacher must be found guilty of discriminating against a student, or a class of students. All they have to do to be in violation of the law is to say something the new state Antisemitism Czar finds offensive, like “Palestinians have the right to self-determination,” or “Israel is committing genocide.” Or even something as innocent as "Save the Children in Palestine."

Llevo toda mi vida plantando cara al poder y no voy a agachar la cabeza ahora”, ha declarado a elDiario.es de la Región de Murcia.
Ndongo vive actualmente con su familia en una vivienda que compró en 2002, al instalarse en la Región de Murcia tras su expulsión de Guinea Ecuatorial, donde fue perseguido por el régimen dictatorial de Teodoro Obiang. “Me dijeron que estaban hartos de mí y que me tenía que ir”, contaba en una entrevista con este medio. Fue ministro del gobierno en el exilio, corresponsal de EFE en África Central y director del Centro Cultural Hispano-Guineano de Malabo hasta 1994, cuando tuvo que abandonar su país a punta de pistola.
Desde entonces, su carrera ha sido una sucesión de vetos. Fue cesado de su puesto en la Agencia EFE tras presiones que él vincula directamente al entonces director general de Política Exterior para África, Miguel Ángel Moratinos. La noticia del desahucio ha provocado una oleada de indignación en la comunidad africana y afrodescendiente en España, que ha emitido un comunicado urgente denunciando el abandono institucional que Ndongo ha sufrido durante décadas. “Cuando el sistema abandona, la comunidad se hace corresponsable”, afirman en el texto, en el que acusan al Estado español de invisibilizar y maltratar a quien consideran “nuestro escritor más universal”. En su comunicado, los firmantes advierten de que lo que está ocurriendo con Ndongo no es un caso aislado, sino “una muestra más del racismo sistémico que a menudo impide nuestro progreso en países como España”. Montas una tarjeta gráfica dedicada en Linux y mantienes habilitado el gráfico integrado en la BIOS y Linux (KDE Neon en mi caso) no solamente instala automáticamente el driver correspondiente (AMDGPU en mi caso) sino que configura correctamente las pantallas que tengas configuradas. En Windows es un CAOS total!!!
I don't know if this is common knowledge but I hadn't found anything on the web (for Windows specifically) that stated that this was possible.
I kinda badly want to fully switch to Linux in the short term but wanted to first properly test how different distros feel at these specs (and maybe try some basic gaming too); maybe someone that wants to do the same can find this post useful (I hope this is the right community to post to).
To do this I used QEMU, and had to edit the source code and recompile it to enable 240hz. Forcing higher refresh rates is surprisingly not that hard, I only had to edit a single line of code (hw\display\edid-generate.c, line ~390, set '75000' to '240000'). So far Mint, Fedora and KDE Neon work perfectly at that refresh rate (after adjusting mouse input polling rates), then I added a couple other nice features like shared clipboard and mouse device toggling (I tested q2pro and it wouldn't work with absolute mouse coordinates, and relative mouse was a pain to use in normal desktop browsing, so I had to find a way to toggle them if I didn't want to reboot the VM every time).

Yep my intention is to do that as soon as I switch, honestly the biggest obstacle for me right now is gaming (I'm unfortunately on an nvidia gpu so I'd get like 20% or more performance penalty with the drivers currently shipped for most distros, a little too much for me) hopefully it'll get even better
I did exactly that when I switched to Linux a couple of years ago. Took around a week to setup, it runs well enough, but you lose the use of your main gpu under Linux that way. I tried lutris for gaming under linux and quickly realised the games run very well via wine. O in my opinion the qemu windows with gpu passtrough is not really worth the hassle nowadays. All games I tried work just as well via wine/proton.

I use forgejo and it's expected to have federation eventually, but it would've been amazing for gitlab to have AP support. Hopefully in the future it might be picked up again.
It's cool af (i don't know much abt atproto, but my friend who knows much more about the technical stuff of fedi/matrix/etc likes it more than AP 🤷) but i wouldn't trust my sensitive repos with it for now. But i guess its the best we have right now :c
What exactly is the idea of federated gitlab? Git is already inherently distributed and automagically mirroring to other remotes is generally like three lines in any CI syntax (and there is probably a precommit hook for it too).
Also: I can see a LOT of security issues with not having a centralized source of truth on what the commit hashes should be and so forth. is fedgit dot zip the source of truth for this app or fedgit dot ml or fedgit dot ca? Theoretically that is where signing comes into play but that gets back to: What advantage does a "fediverse" frontend have?
I think the federation was more about interacting with other instances. Like creating issues and pull-requests without needing to create a new account for every instance.
I think this would be useful, as reporting bugs on GitLabs can be annoying if you have to create an account first.

As they get larger you get more and more of those obnoxious jerks who will close ANY issue if it even slightly is related to something in the past or isn't formatted correctly and so forth.
Personally? I am a firm believer in working with (actual) users to make things better. But I have definitely had weeks where it is just "Yup. We got mentioned by Youtuber X again" and we more or less ignore any issue not made by an established contributor.

You don't know that, because you've never once heard what someone didn't say. Their time is limited too.
I always assumed it was more or less targeting the federation of issues/MRs.
The git side of things is already distributed as you said, but if you decide to host your random project on your own GitLab instance you'll miss out on people submitting issues/MRs because they won't want to sign up for an account on your random instance (or sign in with another IdP).
This is where a lot of the reliance of GitHub comes from, in my opinion.
I have most of my projects on either notabug or chiselapp (Fosil, not Git) and to this day I get e-mails asking for stuff or notifying about issues, so it's not like the "social" / "Hub" aspect of "GitHub" is needed.
Github's dominance comes from the network effects. Everyone's on github, so if you have your project on a different repo, you won't get as many visibility. If your project is on gitlab only and someone wants to report a bug, they need to:
Find your instance.
Create an account.
Deal with an unfamiliar interface
Create the ticket
Hope it gets seen.
Potentially forget about it, unless they set up notifications.
A Federated forge solves all of that.
You follow remote projects without having to create an account in the remote instance.
You open an issue on the remote forge without having to open in an account in the remote instance, and you do it from your local server.
If you have a PR ready, the remote instance gets notified.
It makes a lot easier to separate CI/CD from source management.
It makes a lot easier to separate source management from issue tracking.

Git is, but what about everything else? When you clone a project on gitlab or github, does it come with all the issues, discussions, MRs, and so on?

That's what signed commits are for. Also, pull/merge requests and issues are sent to the origin instance, just like in the fediverse. Like now, you made a comment on a post on Fediverse@lemmy.world through your instance lemmy.zip. The same would happen with your comments, pull/merge requests, issue reports, and so on. There's no need for a "central authority".
Issues from people who can't even be bothered to make a burner account are almost never useful. And issue tracking that is not fed directly to passionate people who care about maintaining a project is worse than worthless.
