The Trump gang just took down a bunch of legally mandated climate assessments. Meanwhile, here in actual reality, the climate doesn't give a fuck:

“We are witnessing a true reversal of ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere—something we’ve never seen before. While the world is debating the potential collapse of the AMOC [Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation] in the North Atlantic, we’re seeing that the SMOC is not just weakening, but has reversed. This could have unprecedented global climate impacts.”

That's a quote from Antonio Turiel, one author of a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This study found that since 2016, the water in parts of the Antarctic Ocean is getting more salty. This suggests that the deep ocean circulation in the southern hemisphere—known as the SMOC—has reversed. Instead of sinking into the depths, surface water is now being replaced by deep water coming up to the surface.

This reversal seems to be driving the accelerated melting of sea ice in the Antarctic Ocean:

I am looking to create similar tool to AlternativeTo. This would list different brands and why you should or should not buy them. Is there some software that would be great starting point for creating this kind of service?

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency news service is not a bad source if you want reporting from that perspective that won't affect your blood pressure (the events reported on might, but not the reporting). It's extremely plain matter-of-fact, A says X, B responded Y, with little editorialising or opinion material, or discernible politics of its own. Allegations quoted at length and attributed, responses quoted at length, in either direction. No looking out the window to see whether it is raining, but at least neutral reporting on the “is it raining or not" debate from the outside, without name-calling, sensationalising, or actively stoking controversy.

Between Haaretz or The Forward their mix of stating plain truths sometimes and harebrained nonsense other times, and Jewish Currents being all opinions and essays, this might offer something slightly different.

Legislating Catastrophe: How U.S. Lawmakers Are Enabling Israeli Aggression and Sabotaging Diplomacy with #Iran

In a stunning display of bipartisan militarism, Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D–NJ) and Mike Lawler (R–NY) have introduced legislation that would authorize #Trump to provide #Israel with advanced military capabilities, including B-2 stealth bombers and Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs), also known as bunker-buster bombs, under the pretext of deterring Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapons program. The proposal, far from being a safeguard against nuclear proliferation, amounts to a green light for unprovoked and illegal military aggression against a sovereign nation.¹

This legislation serves not as a tool of deterrence, but as a deliberate provocation designed to entrench Israel’s long-standing policy of regional escalation. It is especially alarming given Israel’s history of unauthorized military strikes on Iranian soil and other extraterritorial operations, which violate international law and Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.²

Authorizing a unilateral #US transfer of strategic bombers and weapons capable of penetrating hardened #nuclear sites undermines diplomacy and directly threatens regional and global stability. Israel’s covert and overt attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists, military infrastructure, and civilian facilities have not only escalated tensions, but have also led Iran to harden its defensive posture and withdraw from international nuclear agreements such as the #JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), largely due to the Trump administration's earlier abandonment of the accord.³

By preparing to arm Israel for a preemptive military strike, the proposed legislation would draw the United States into a foreign war that the American public overwhelmingly opposes.⁴ This path not only jeopardizes regional diplomacy but also places U.S. military personnel, diplomats, and civilians across the Middle East in immediate danger of retaliation—not from rogue actors, but from state-level retribution by Iran, a sovereign nation with formidable military capabilities.

Moreover, the framing of this legislation as a defensive measure conceals its actual function: enabling a continued campaign of aggression, expansionism, and lawlessness under the false veneer of national security. Israel, a nuclear-armed state that has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), maintains an arsenal outside of international inspection and oversight.⁵ Supporting Israel’s unilateral military actions while Iran remains a signatory to the NPT represents a brazen double standard in U.S. foreign policy and a reckless betrayal of international norms.

Rather than deterring conflict, the proposed bill would accelerate it. The U.S. has a moral, strategic, and legal obligation to resist being drawn into another war of choice—particularly one fought at the behest of a foreign power whose recent actions have been condemned as aggressive and destabilizing.⁶ The American people deserve leadership that prioritizes peace, not political subservience to a foreign military agenda.
