Chester: Same-sex penguin couple hatch rare chick at zoo.

Scampi and Flounder, a pair of male penguins, "stepped in to help raise one of two eggs laid by another penguin pair, Wotsit and Peach", the zoo said.

The chicks are said to now be days away from taking to the water for the first time.

Bird experts at the zoo carefully shared the eggs between the two nests to help give both chicks the best possible start and to help improve the chances of successful fledging.

My final point was that there is no difference between any of them. I am not on a side because I do not see them as different. They are all happy to murder people without a second thought. People die for someone else's ideology. We are 100% as barbaric as the Spanish invading South America. Nothing has changed. I can be in Russia, China, the US, Iran, France - it does not matter. You sit in the town and meet lots of great people whose leaders are animals that kill without a care.

On Monday, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu will meet to discuss the next steps in their plan to reshape the Middle East. Their vision includes expanding normalization, disarming adversaries, and ending any Palestinian aspirations for freedom.

Folks, maybe you are aware of the matter today regarding some rancid behavior toward Mastodon treasure @GottaLaff. Well, not going to comment on the details. You can easily find it.

What is heartening is the overwhelming degree of support for Laffy, demonstrating the collective power of Mastodon to pull together to defend valued members of our community.

This episode just underscores that what we have built here is precious. Here, we the people, are in control not the billionaires.

Pay attention. It's not just for clamping down on illegal immigrants. Happy 4th of July. #politics

@palestine

"Israel’s Channel 14 reported on Wednesday that the current proposal includes a side letter from Trump"
"The document would give Israel the green light to "renew the fire if our demands with regards to the disarmament of Hamas and the exile of its leaders are not met""
"Israel would be able to interpret, define and make a judgment call on these terms"
Like I said in a thread, this is no ceasefire. It's just theatre.

Really frustrated with #Windows 11 not wanting to install the pending update it keeps reminding me I need to install. Evidently this particular #cumulative #update is problematic (v. 24H2 - KB5060829) given the proliferation of YouTube video 'fixes' that abound (which haven't fixed anything).
How about Microsoft pushes an update instead? Nope. It's the user's burden. I hate Windows. Unfortunately it's whats running my wife's laptop and I need to keep that machine updated and secure (as I type this on my #Linux machine.)

Haaretz: Ben Gvir and Smotrich are meeting today to push for a "joint path" to sabotage the prisoner exchange deal.
But what they don’t realize is without them, it wouldn’t even happen.
For two years, we’ve been hearing the same recycled headlines, the same empty promises about “deals” and “progress.”
They’re all liars. Every single one of them. And their biggest liar? Trump.

[Fix] KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland - tablet pen suddenly not changing pointer position

Symptoms

Stylus taps are registered as well as button presses (on the last cursor position). Cursor doesn't change position.
"Test tablet" in "Drwaing Tablet" KDE settings only displays Stylus release events.
X11 works.
Finger touch still works.

Solution

Rename or delete ~/.config/kcminputrc, or remove config section related to "Pen" (not tested). Deleting the config resets other mouse pointer settings like speed, device enabled/disabled and calibrations.
Then log out and log back in.

Precursor

Testing pen in "Test tablet" section.

Other attempted fixes

Log out and back in - Fail
Reboot - Fail
Moving cursor on login screen and during login process - Fail
Insert and remove pen again - Fail
Shutdown and disconnect battery (in UEFI) - Fail
Removing kcminputrc after diffing with Timeshift snapshot and filtering for interesting files with grep - Pass

System info

OS: Arch Linux x64
Host: Lenovo ThinkPad L390 Yoga
Kernel: 6.12.30-1-lts
DE: Plasma 6.3.5

Large coca plantation confiscated in northern Honduras plenglish.com/news/2025/07/03/…

Age of Invention: All Fired Up

#energy #industry #history

...we need to see things from the vantage point of the 1580s, when we find the first recorded attempts in England to develop the smokeless coal. There were at least two main ways to go about it. One was to try to remove its soot-inducing, sulphurous impurities, which we’ll come back to another time when I set out the story of coke. But the other, much older, and more tried-and-tested method was to add a material to counteract them. At Europe’s greatest coal-mining region in the sixteenth century, near Liège in present-day Belgium, the locals there had long crushed the coal into a dust and mixed it with some wettened loamy soil or mud, working it into balls or briquettes before leaving them to dry, creating a fuel that burned more regularly and completely, releasing far less soot.

What follows is, effectively, the untold story of the coal briquette — and a solution to the centuries-old mystery of why it failed to catch on.
