Oh lordy. I never worked crop farming but as a teenager cleaned stalls for $5/hour (back in the 90s that was good money). Add to that that many of us on medicaid are disabled. And it is hard, backbreaking, body wearing work to pick crops or do any sort of farm work. Clearly they have no clue about the physicality of the job and what's involved.
I tried to find self-employment info for the work requirements. Not available.

I have no idea what I could hide in those, especially in sufficient quantity to blow up a plane, without ripping the soles off, carving out some space in the cork and then attempting to reaffix the sole in a stable enough manner that I could even get to the airport, let alone to security.
This was a stupid rule from the get-go. That it took nearly 20 years to admit that tells you pretty much all you need to know about airport security.

I truly do not know if there is a good solution, but I do know the TSA ain't it. People are pretty ingenious, and if someone really wants to get something through security, they'll likely find a way. Hell, I saw a video of someone that built a functioning weapon entirely from items purchased after the security check. Luckily he was doing it as an example, but still.
I feel like we already have the solution. The reason hijacking a plane is attractive for a terrorist is because you essentially have a precision missile. There's little security for buses or trains because you can't do the same thing. If you make the cockpit basically bulletproof and have strict procedures about entering the cockpit during flight, then it's not nearly as attractive. Those changes were already made after 9/11. Hijacking a plane only allows the hijackers to kill the people on board, which isn't as useful. Literally eliminate TSA and I think we're good.

I think a lot of people have heard of OpenAI’s local-friendly Whisper model, but I don’t see enough self-hosters talking about WhisperX, so I’ll hop on the soapbox:
Whisper is extremely good when you have lots of audio with one person talking, but fails hard in a conversational setting with people talking over each other. It’s also hard to sync up transcripts with the original audio.
Enter WhisperX: WhisperX is an improved whisper implementation that automatically tags who is talking, and tags each line of speech with a timestamp.
I’ve found it great for DMing TTRPGs — simply record your session with a conference mic, run a transcript with WhisperX, and pass the output to a long-context LLM for easy session summaries. It’s a great way to avoid slowing down the game by taking notes on minor events and NPCs.
I’ve also used it in a hacky script pipeline to bulk download podcast episodes with yt-dlp, create searchable transcripts, and scrub ads by having an LLM sniff out timestamps to cut with ffmpeg.

As a subpoint, for me, "34 million able bodied on Medicaid" doesn't pass the sniff test with me.
I just don't believe approximately 10% of US citizens are on Medicaid and capable of reliably working (physically and/or mentally). I don't believe that number is even close to being correct.

in reply to Sarah Taber • • •soooooo here’s the thing. The 13th amendment says slavery is ok if it’s a punishment (paraphrasing). And here are all these prisons (private or otherwise) and concentration camps (dido) which I’m sure are financed by the very people pushing the “deport them” agenda, who are receiving the “prisoners” to be churned out back to the very fields they were grabbed from as “rent-a-slaves”.
Anyway. Pretty sure this is where things are going.

in reply to Sarah Taber • • •I wonder if for stuff like this, they actually know it is not feasible, but they know that most people won't actually verify the feasability of these things. They assure people its all fine, and if it fails later, they can just blame someone/something else.
Sure a few people may realise, but their propaganda machines are pretty effective at convincing people and drowning out criticism.
