The way you did things on Lisa was very different than how we do things nowadays. It was a document-centric not app-centric workflow. It's pretty neat and pretty faithful representation. At first I thought it was infinitemac.org project which runs Mac and NeXT emulators in the browser running the real operating systems. I'm looking for a federated social media platform that allows for easy topic-based following and blocking, similar to how you can follow or block hashtags on Twitter. On Lemmy, you can follow communities, but there are so many that it becomes overwhelming. I want a platform where I can see or block everything related to a specific tag, and also view only the most popular posts about that topic, similar to how Lemmy communities work. Mastodon, for example, only shows the latest posts, which isn't ideal for trending content. I don't want a chat-like experience; I want to quickly see what's trending about a topic or what's trending in general, while being able to block a few specific topics. Ideally, I wouldn't have to spend hours curating a list of communities or followed users. Does anyone know of a platform that fits these criteria?
I like kbin, think of it basically like if someone took lemmy and mastodon and made one platform that could use both. there is only one mobile app but it's pretty good imo.
On Lemmy, you might find it overwhelming by looking at the all communities feed and then blocking those you don't like. Instead subscribe to the ones you want and then just view the subscribe feed.
Personally, I use all to find more content and block communities I don't want. I then just jumpnjnto subscribed occasionally of there is too much junk.
It's a shame that there aren't finer controls, like to ramp up and down communities rather than just block or subscribe. Some communities, I wouldn't mind seeing their popular posts but I don't want to say the hordes of junk posts. Only option is to block.

So I have things working for me at this point. I was never able to get Samba worling properly. My initial issue was not having a / at the end of my folder path in the Samba config file. After fixing that issue I was able to see the shared folder but was prompted to log in each time, which was an issue in my use case. I ended up abandoning Samba and setting up Jellyfin which has been a much smoother experience, but also is providing many more features. So, if you are looking to share media on your local network, my recommendation would be Jellyfin!

Hello, I've been working towards fully migrating to linux, but this is one issue I'm having a hard time with. I have a couple of folders on a storage drive that I share on my local network to stream movies and TV, but I can't figure out how to do it in my Linux install. I'm running Linux Mint 22, have installed Samba, and have tried a few different walkthroughs with no success. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this set up?
Well I tried the UI approach of right clicking the folder and going to share options, which is when I was prompted to install Samba, but there is warning that states "The permission for prevent othersl users from accessing this share". I did some digging on that error, and everything I came across basically said that wouldn't work. My next attempt was modifying the Samba config file, I added
[FolderName]path = (file directory path I see in properties, /media/username/lettersandnumbersfordrive?/FolderName)
browseable = yes
read only = yes
guest ok = yes
create mask =0775
As instructed by a tutorial I found. When running testpram I don't get any errors, but I'm not seeing the folder in VLC like I do when sharing from Win10. That's as far as I have gotten. If there's anything else that I can provide please let me know, and on that note, the drive I'm sharing from is NTFS if that has any impact.
So I added the forward slash and now the folder shows up, but it's asking me for login credentials now. I thought "guests ok = yes" would handle that but apparently not. Any suggestions?

I meant jellyfin on xbox, they seem to have some version of it. If it works, then you are kinda golden, install jellyfin on pc, add a folder with movies as a library, and install clients where you need them, and it would work (if your ip on home network is fixed that is, would need some router fixing if not, cause it talks by ip:port to server (your pc)). Think jellyfin fixed sketchiest issues with transcoding, so it kinda not that involved on server side
This is actually what I did. I never could get Samba working, so I setup Jellyfin and it's been a breeze ever since. What an amazing piece of software! I just wanted to access my files, but having them categorized with images, cast and crew, ratings, and even recommended is just fantastic. The Xbox app works fine but it's basically just a web wrapper, and the cursor never goes away which is mildly annoying, but it's still a way better experience than the VLC Xbox app.
Just ran into this the other night myself. Turns out I didn't have the path the correct way, cause samba is picky. My original config was set up with the path = /home/user/Public but I had to change it to path = /home/user/Public/ You're path in your reply looks like it's missing that / at the end. After you update, don't forget to restart the service.
Well that made it show up thankfully, but it's asking me to log in. Any idea how to handle that? I don't want it to ask at all so family members have ready access.

I think a lot of peope understandably misunderstand this post because it doesn't really explain the situation. After reading OP's comments I gather that OP put a new server online (not on AWS) and was immediately port scanned by a host that is on AWS. Since OP did not consent to being port scanned, they filled out an abuse complaint with AWS, the hoster the scan came from, out of principle, knowing that it probably won't do much. Which is totally fine if that is how you want to spend your time.
I think what most commenters thought is that OP was hosting with AWS and complained to them that someone else scanned their server. This does not seem to be the case.
Amazon may take action against egregious mass-scanning offenders per the “…to violate the security, integrity, or availability of any user, network…” verbiage of the AUP, especially if they’re fingerprinting services or engaging in more sophisticated recon, but OP’s complaints are nowhere near meeting that threshold.

I have close family members who have been diagnosed with autism, and my full-time job is being a support worker for adults who have learning disabilities and autism. This is beyond disgusting.

I'm aware that some people with autism are able to make grossly inappropriate comments to people. It happens, as behaviours from autism vary. There's a man in his early 40s that colleagues of mine support, who will literally do this to women right in front of their partners, and has almost got himself beaten up for it.
However, Wallace is also accused of not only exposing his genitals. But putting his hand on a woman's groin, and saying "Do you like that?" That's behaviour of a rapist.

I would hope that after the Silkin report is published, and he fails to sue the BBC for apparently discriminating against him for taking action over his conduct, he'll disappear quietly.
