@slamy we were there a couple of weeks ago and picked a tick off the finance, so hopefully it’s not Lyme disease. Based on how long she’s had the fever and a couple other symptoms, I’m guessing it’s some sort of infection that some antibiotics can clear up.
Have someone dress up as her and be her doppelgänger or just use a chair with her accoutrements of dress. Don't forget the shoes. Have someone lead the shower, take lots of pictures to show your daughter, and have fun!

One huge impact mass FOSS adoption would have is that there would be a lot less software and hardware churn. Commercial nature of proprietary technology is the main driver for constant upgrade cycles we see. Companies need to constantly sell products to stay in business, and this means you have to deprecate old software and hardware in order to sell new versions of the product.
Windows 11 roll out is a perfect example. Vast majority of Windows 10 users are perfectly happy with the way their computer works currently, they’re not demanding any new features, they just want their computer to continue to work the way it does currently. However, Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 and now they’re forced to buy a new computer to keep doing what they’ve been doing.
This problem goes away entirely with open source because there is no commercial incentive at play. If a piece of software works, and there is a community of users using it, then it can keep working the way it does indefinitely. In cases where a software project goes in a directions some users don’t like, such as the case with Gnome, then software can be forked by users who want to go in a different direction or preserve original functionality. This is how Cinnamon and Mate projects came about.
Another aspect of the open source dynamic is that there’s an incentive to optimize software. So, you can get continuous performance improvements without having to constantly upgrade your hardware. For most commercial software, there’s little incentive to do that since that costs company money. It’s easier to just expect users to upgrade their hardware if they want better performance.
Non-technical users in particular would be far better off if they had the option to fund open source software instead of buying commercial versions. Even having to pay equal amounts, the availability of the source puts more power in the hands of the users. For example, building on the example of Gnome, users of an existing software project could also pull funds together to pay developers to add features to the software or change functionality in a particular way.
This is precisely what makes licenses like GPL so valuable in my opinion. It’s a license that ensure the source stays open, and in this way inherently gives more power to the users.

@ikonoklast there are already plenty of examples in the wild with open source foundations. I'm not sure what's confusing here because non profit organizations are not commercial in nature.
the point is that most of time the foundations don't actually pay the devs. there's a really small shift there where kde and gnome are starting to pay development work but the bulk is funded by for-profit-companies, it's not even close

Frankly, your whole argument makes little sense to me given that we have plenty of large scale successful open source projects already. Things can be improved of course, but clearly the model already works.

While most of the work on open source software is actually done and paid for by companies with commercial incentive, just a different business model. Unfortunately we still live in capitalism after all: if there's no commercial incentive, then it usually doesn't happen

I'd like to see citations that most of the work on open source is funded by commercial companies. Last I looked, companies are actually quite terrible at contributing money back to open source they use. It's literally a meme at this point.
I hear that, this cheapish laptop I'm posting from right now has Linux Manjaro running on it because I wasn't interested in Windows 11 and now it runs better than it did with Windows 10. I might not have bothered switching it if I wasn't getting forced to in the first place.
The trouble with FOSS and Linux is that it's been hijacked by corps already. The corps realised that they don't have to pay employees to develop their own software, they can just steal unpaid work of FOSS programmers (hence MS "embrace" of Linux). They just have to steer its development in the direction that suits their agenda (redhat systemd).
@ilpalazzo this is precisely why I mentioned GPL at the end. It is key that the license has a clause ensuring that the source stays open. The whole permissive license idea has been a campaign by the corps to undermine free software.

You'll also send complete words that you typed or wrote, not just statistics. You'll also send speech recognition data, and activity history, so every document you opened, website you visited...
But that's just what Microsoft tells you about. Recently, a youtuber called "The PC Security channel" analysed a completely fresh Windows install, using Wireshark, and what they found was is that Windows makes a few connections to third parties it never really told you about.

So what exactly can Microsoft do with all this data?
Well, they have more than enough to completely fingerprint your device, they can reliably tell what you use in terms of apps, and what type of content you watch, and they also basically can have a keylogger on your computer. And finally, Windows sends some data to third parties.
Fortunately, you can disable all the option stuff straight from the settings.You can go to the privacy and security options, and go into each category and disable everything there.
You can also completely disable the telemetry service. Just hit Windows + R, and in the run dialog, type services.msc. In there, look for something called "Connected user experiences and telemetry", double click that, and in the "General tab", you can set "startup type" to "disabled".
Apple talks a big game when it comes to privacy, but in the end, is it really true? Out of the box, macOS sends to Apple your IP address, location, and some usage patterns, like all the apps you run, and when you run them. Other telemetry data, out of the box, includes browsing history, search history, crash data, performance and diagnostic data, location information, health information if you use that on an iPhone for example, all the info you entered in your AppleID, the device serial number, payment information, everything you bought using that Apple ID, and potentially your government ID.
Fortunately, macOS lets you disable virtually everything that's being collected. You can just head over to the Security and Privacy settings, and in analytics and improvements, uncheck everything.
Now, how about Linux? Well, Linux based operating systems, or at least desktop Linux distributions don't collect any data out of the box, with a few exceptions.
The first one is Ubuntu, who will collect telemetry data out of the box, with no personal information at all. It's just hardware data, but it could still be used to fingerprint your device. Canonical doesn't currently have any ad server that I know about, so they probably only really use this to know what their users actually use and focus their efforts on that, but if you're uncomfortable with that, you can disable it at install.
Some Ubuntu derivatives that use the same installer might also have that kind of telemetry. On top of that, you have the ability to turn some entirely optional telemetry on in KDE's settings; and GNOME also has a telemetry tool that you have to install manually.

First impression: clean, really easy to sign up to and get going. Format looks like a mix between Twitter and Instagram.
I like the core ideas behind this platform. It's based in Australia, with servers in Ireland. Created by Issam Hijazi, an Australian-Palestinian, and backed by Tech For Palestine incubator.
