France has announced a “historic” accord with New Caledonia in which the overseas territory, rocked by deadly separatist violence last year, would remain French but be declared a new state.
“A State of New Caledonia within the Republic: it’s a bet on trust,” the French president, Emmanuel Macron, posted on X on Saturday, hailing a “historic” agreement.
Receiving the signatories later, the president said that “after two agreements and three referendums, New Caledonia, through what you have signed, is opening a new chapter in its future in a peaceful relationship with France”.
Macron had called for talks to break a deadlock between forces loyal to France and those wanting independence. New Caledonian elected officials, as well as political, economic and civil society leaders, gathered near Paris to hammer out a constitutional framework for the territory.
After 10 days of talks, the parties agreed that a “State of New Caledonia” should be created.
Manuel Valls, the minister for overseas territories, called it an “intelligent compromise” that maintains links between France and New Caledonia, but with more sovereignty for the Pacific island.
The priority now is New Caledonia’s economic recovery.
Last year’s violence, which claimed the lives of 14 people, is estimated to have cost the territory 2bn euros ($2.3 bn), shaving 10% off its gross domestic product, he said.
The French prime minister, Francois Bayrou, said Saturday’s deal – which still requires parliamentary and referendum approval – was of “historic dimensions”.
Home to about 270,000 people and located nearly 17,000km (10,600 miles) from Paris, New Caledonia is one of several overseas territories that remain an integral part of France.
It has been ruled from Paris since the 1800s, but many indigenous Kanaks still resent France’s power over their islands and want fuller autonomy or independence.
Unrest broke out in May 2024 after Paris planned to give voting rights to thousands of non-indigenous long-term residents. Kanaks feared this would leave them in a permanent minority, crushing their chances of winning independence.
As part of the agreement, New Caledonia residents will in future only be allowed to vote after having lived 10 years on the archipelago.
The last independence referendum in New Caledonia was held in 2021, and was boycotted by pro-independence groups over the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Kanak population.
It was the latest of three since 2018, all of which rejected New Caledonian independence. Since the 2021 referendum however, the political situation in the archipelago has been deadlocked.
Macron declared in early June he wanted a “new project” for New Caledonia.
The 13-page agreement announced on Saturday calls for a New Caledonian nationality, and the possibility for residents there to combine that status with French nationality.
Under the deal, a “State of New Caledonia” would be enshrined in France’s constitution, and other countries could recognise such a state.
The deal also calls for an economic and financial recovery pact that would include a renewal of the territory’s nickel processing capabilities.
Both chambers of France’s parliament are to meet in the fourth quarter of this year to vote on approving the deal, which is then to be submitted to New Caledonians in a referendum in 2026.

Most file managers I've encountered default to icon view. One of the first things I do is set the default to detailed list view. Might be a preference for seeing names and dates over many identical folder icons, or just an old habit from using Windows. But I'd be curious to hear about the benefits of icon view and why it's usually the default in Linux GUI file managers.
What does everyone else use and any reasons to prefer one over the other?
All jokes aside, its personal preference. If you're working in a dense file tree, you probably need the info that details view gives you. Icon view really only matter for media.
I work in a design industry that requires a lot of source files so I end up having to constantly switch. Lists when I’m looking for the relevant folder, or looking for a particular file based on name, or icons if I’m looking for something based on image. There’s no consistent way to switch between them with a keyboard shortcut among different OSs, either.
I have it on grid view :3.. just cause it can fit a lot more files into the same screen space
In list view I have to scroll to see all the files in my home folder, and in grid view it only takes like half of the available space, if I have the app maximized
I mostly prefer Detail view, but I enable Icon view in Videos, Photos, and Music folders so I can see previews.
I’m guessing most file managers have similar behavior, but on XFCE Thunar, I’m able to set detail as the default but have it remembery choice per folder.
I prefer details since it's easier for me to scan visually, with my eyes only having to go straight down, to find either a name, date, or size. Sorting I also find more intuitive. However, I prefer icon view for my pictures and videos folders
For some reason, I can’t ever find a view that feels like “list view” from Windows OS. That would be my preference. Detail view is useful in specific conditions—such as troubleshooting or in search results. As is icon view (mostly for images).
I use Krusader on Linux which I don't think has icon view.
When I have to use something else (eg Windows Explorer at work), obviously I prefer detailed list view. I like seeing things like the last modified date.
I think it heavily depends on the files one has to browes the most. I deal with text files all the time, so i dont need an icon to jump in my face telling me, that its a text file.
The media-, design people I know love the previews that icons give them, because its much easier to spot the image file, they are looking for while scanning through a directory
When I am not on the terminal, I use list/detail view all the time. In the details most of the time only last modification date is relevant to me. I always make the list icons one step smaller as the default and sort directories before files in Nautilus.
I don't need thumbnails. When I need to see pictures, I open them with the now new image viewer in Gnome and use the arrow keys to go through, if I am unsure what I am searching for. I most cases I go by file name.
The last time I found icon view useful was in Mac OS 9. There were three main characteristics that made it useful that no current systems have AFAIK:
The icon grid was tight (32 pixels) and you could either snap items to that grid or place them freely.
Window sizes and places were directly associated with folders. (There was no "browser-style" single-window mode.)
File names used dynamic spacing. Longer names would occupy multiple grid spaces as needed.
These factors meant that every folder had a consistent and potentially unique size, placment, and layout.
OS X took the Finder and either ruined or neglected everything good about it. Windows explorer has always been garbage. Never found a Linux file manager with a compelling icon view either (though to be fair, I've never looked all that hard). The lack of system-level metadata for layout kind of mandates an abstraction between a directory and its display.
I mean that an individual folder will always look the same (consistent), and also look distinctly different from any other folder (unique) if that's how you arranged it. So you could identify a folder instantly.
Everything in list view looks the same at a glance, and most file managers don't retain a folder window's size and placement. Modern macOS kiiiind of does but you have to fight it if you don't want a single-window browsing UI.

What's going on, is the fediverse being overrun by bots? Or am I as a fanatic anti-AI person just losing my mind and seeing the enemy everywhere?
I hate the fact that I now question every interaction that seems a bit off - it seems such a stupid waste of my time and I'm afraid I might just end up blocking real people who happen to express themselves in a strange way - as a neurodivergent person I know how bad I would feel about being ostracized as 'too strange to be real'. Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

one of the problems with being a retrocomputerist is how often I use a 2025 program and think "this program would be just as functional and 10 times as nice to use if you'd written it for windows 95"
So I've been hacking on DOS programs a lot recently and it's really made me realize HOW MUCH CODE they have to spend on basic windowing code! but DOS didn't have a GUI, so every program that needed it had to implement it themselves.
And then later, with Windows providing all that code, they only have to write the application-specific code, saving a lot of development and maintenance work.
Why didn't they just use a picture of a keyboard and you can click the key you'd like to choose? That's what Steam Input does, and it's super intuitive.

Nous, citoyens français, adressons cette demande de destitution du Président de la République Emmanuel Macron, sur le fondement de l’article 68 de la Constitution, en raison de manquements graves et répétés à ses devoirs, incompatibles avec l’exercice de sa fonction. Son action, marquée par des atteintes aux principes démocratiques, des abus de pouvoir et des décisions mettant en péril la sécurité nationale et européenne, justifie pleinement l’activation de cette procédure exceptionnelle.
Le Président Emmanuel Macron a fait preuve d’un autoritarisme croissant, bafouant les principes démocratiques et le rôle du Parlement. Parmi les faits les plus marquants :
• Usage abusif de l’article 49.3 pour imposer des réformes majeures, notamment la réforme des retraites, sans consultation parlementaire, restreignant ainsi le débat démocratique.
• Répression violente des mouvements sociaux, en particulier lors des manifestations des Gilets jaunes et des mobilisations contre la réforme des retraites, dénoncée par des instances internationales telles que le Conseil de l’Europe et l’ONU.
• Affaiblissement des corps intermédiaires (syndicats, associations, élus locaux), réduisant les contre-pouvoirs et la participation citoyenne à la prise de décision.
• Contournement du Parlement et concentration excessive des pouvoirs entre les mains du Président et d’un cercle restreint de conseillers.
• Nominations controversées à des postes stratégiques, favorisant une gouvernance opaque et des conflits d’intérêts.
• Affaiblissement des services publics (hôpital, éducation, justice) par des réformes imposées sans dialogue social réel, au détriment du bien commun.
Les récentes déclarations et décisions du Président Macron concernant la Russie et la guerre en Ukraine constituent une escalade dangereuse, risquant d’impliquer directement la France dans un conflit majeur :
• Déclaration sur une possible extension de la dissuasion nucléaire française à l’Europe, exposant la France à des risques accrus de confrontation avec la Russie.
• Ouverture à l’envoi de troupes européennes en Ukraine, initiative considérée par la Russie comme un acte de guerre, augmentant le risque d’escalade militaire.
• Autorisation de frappes ukrainiennes sur le sol russe avec des missiles français, brisant le principe de non-belligérance et mettant directement en danger la France en tant que cible potentielle.
Ces prises de position irresponsables exposent la France à des représailles et augmentent le risque d’un conflit généralisé en Europe. Elles démontrent une gestion hasardeuse de la politique étrangère, mettant en péril la sécurité des Français.
• Décisions économiques favorisant des intérêts privés au détriment du patrimoine national, notamment la vente de groupes industriels stratégiques comme Alstom.
• Absence de transparence dans l’attribution des marchés publics, notamment dans le domaine de la santé et de la défense.
• Maintien de ministres impliqués dans des affaires judiciaires, sapant la confiance des citoyens dans les institutions.
Conclusion
Les actions du Président Emmanuel Macron constituent une atteinte grave aux principes démocratiques, aux libertés fondamentales et à la souveraineté nationale.
Son approche autoritaire et son mépris des institutions, combinés à des décisions irresponsables sur la scène internationale, exposent la France à des risques majeurs, tant sur le plan intérieur qu’extérieur.
Nous demandons donc aux parlementaires d’initier sans délai la procédure de destitution prévue par l’article 68 de la Constitution, afin de garantir la préservation des principes républicains et la sécurité de la nation.
