You invented a time machime to go to the future to find out what the homework assignments would be so you could go back to your present time and complete them before they were assigned. Butmyou made mistake and submitted the future homework one day and your tescher was confused. She looked in her syllabus and realized that homework wasnt goimg to be assigned for 6 more weeks. She assumed you must have stolen it from her laptop.
After I cussed her out in front of the class for a few minutes, she told me to go to detention. I told her to go fuck herself. I had my limits. My parents were too boomer to stand up for me though. The teacher is always right.

I was smart, but also kind of a punk. It led to a few situations like the one above where I got the shaft merely due to immature adults trying to pound the nail that stuck out. I almost didn't graduate. I had all A's but had an English teacher that had a personal beef with me and was going to fail me. In that case, I actually had two allies. A football coach who had been there for decades and another English teacher. They cornered the faggot and told him if he didn't pass me they were going to take him to the superintendent and use their superior tenure and political clout to get him terminated, and then follow up by pulling strings with the union to see that he never gets reinstated or hired anywhere else. He passed me.
If I learned anything though, it's that high school doesn't really matter and some parents put way too much emphasis on it. I still went to a top law school nonetheless. It didn't real matter in the big scheme of things, though getting fucked hard for standard kid behavior was a motivator to become a lawyer. Now when I tell people to go fuck themselves, they usually do.
I went to school in Massachusetts. Wasn't any smarter than I am now, but I was definitely a punk. I felt like most of my teachers were too try-hard-do-good to have a personal vendetta against a kid (which for a grown man is serious faggot behavior). Un an plus tôt, Ivanka Trump, la fille du président américain, et son mari s'offraient une île de la Méditerranée. Montant de la transaction : 1 milliard de dollars. Sociologue dont les travaux portent sur la pauvreté et l'exclusion, professeure à l'École de travail social de l'Université d'Ottawa, Dahlia Namian a publié en 2023 La société de provocation dans lequel elle pourfend la démesure et l'exhibitionnisme du 1 % de la population la plus riche de la planète. Ce mariage est effectivement un exemple de ce que j'ai appelé la société de provocation. Ce fut une démonstration, dans toute sa splendeur, de la démesure de la richesse, d'une porno-opulence qui est à son meilleur. On a vécu une démonstration de toute la domination symbolique, économique et culturelle de ce 1 % des plus riches de la planète. Jusqu'à récemment, ils cherchaient plutôt à cacher leur richesse, et leurs mariages se faisaient généralement dans la discrétion. Ce n'est plus du tout le cas : les puissants paradent, et c'est presque une parade militaire. Ce qui constitue un manifeste de l'impunité de la richesse. On est en train de célébrer une phase du capitalisme global qui outrepasse toutes les règles démocratiques. Et on voit là une élite qui a cessé de se justifier, d'essayer de convaincre, et qui dit "on se fout de ce que vous pensez". Peu importent les conséquences sur la planète.
Pendant ce temps, une partie des 99 autres % regarde, captivée. Qu'est-ce qui fascine chez ces ultra-riches ?
Je pense qu'aujourd'hui, on aime les regarder pour les critiquer. Au Québec, il y a une série d'émissions portant sur les hommes les plus riches, qui montrent tous les gadgets qu'ils aiment. On a ainsi vu la quarantaine de Ferrari que possède le magnat de l'immobilier Luc Poirier. Une autre série s'intéresse aux femmes de conjoints ultrariches. On sait que cela fascine, que cela booste l'audience et génère du clic sur le web. Mais je pense que cette fascination est nourrie par la colère. On entend tout de même un discours très critique envers cette oligarchie, surtout depuis la réélection de Donald Trump.
Votre livre emprunte son titre, "La société de provocation", à Romain Gary. Pourquoi ce choix ?
Je trouvais cette expression pertinente pour décrire cet ordre social qui permet, en toute impunité, au 1 % le mieux nanti de se livrer à toutes les formes de provocation, de décomplexer leur richesse, en érigeant leurs excès de consommation presque comme une vertu, en allant à l'encontre des règles élémentaires de la démocratie, au moment où la planète s'enflamme. La nouveauté, c'est qu'on a rarement rencontré aussi peu de résistance : toutes les tentatives concrètes pour freiner cette accumulation extrême de richesse n'aboutissent à rien. On l'a encore vu récemment au sommet du G7 : le seul dispositif de justice fiscale qui existait est tombé à l'eau. Le Canada s'est plié aux demandes de Trump concernant la taxe sur tous les services du style GAFAM. Dans l'Histoire, il y a toujours eu une caste de gens très riches qui concentraient beaucoup de pouvoir, mais la nouveauté c'est que, malgré leurs multiples provocations, il n'y a pas de volonté politique de les freiner. Un autre élément à relever est qu'ils sont plus résilients face aux crises. On l'a vu en 2008, lors de la crise économique mondiale, puis avec le Covid : ils ont perdu un peu d'argent au départ, mais ont très vite retrouvé leur niveau de richesse. Et depuis la pandémie, on constate qu'il progresse encore.

Dans votre livre, vous évoquez notamment le business des yachts, qui n'a jamais été aussi florissant, avec des bateaux pouvant coûter jusqu'à 600 ou 700 millions de dollars. Selon vous, le superyacht est "le symbole d'une classe dominante et ouverte sur le monde". Une manière, aussi, de s'extraire de la société et de vivre dans sa bulle ?
Effectivement. L'exemple des yachts est parlant, mais on peut aussi parler de leur velléité de se retirer du monde en cherchant à créer des villes privées ou des espaces en mer, tout comme en colonisant l'espace et Mars. Les villes privées promettent aux élus du capitalisme l'éden dont ils rêvent : une espace qui échappe aux contraintes de l'État, avec ses infâmes lois fiscales, ses terribles lois du travail et ses ingrates règles environnementales et civiques. C'est une vision très libertaire où les riches pourraient vivre dans un entre-soi et échapper à toutes les lois et toutes les règles qui découlent des contraintes d'un vivre-ensemble démocratique. C'est assez clair chez Musk et ceux qui le suivent, dans la Silicon Valley ou ailleurs.
Il y a un an, Ivanka Trump a acheté une île albanaise d'exception, Sazan, en pleine Méditerranée. Son projet est d'y construire un complexe hôtelier de luxe, mais on peut aussi penser qu'elle s'offre un espace de repli, disponible en cas de besoin.

Okay, I have to bring this up. Ogle's story, and your story, both have a problem. What is the thermal efficiency of a Ford Galaxy 500 that can do 100mpg?! Lets say it's a 10% efficient engine, which is a low-ball even for the 1970s, and lets say it gets 10mpg out of the factory. Just dumb back-of-the-napkin math says taking that engine to 100mpg is taking it to 100% efficiency.
Okay, maybe you don't like my dumb math, lets try it another way: We know what it's like to put a 40% efficient engine into a car like that, because of the good ol' TDI swap. You get about 30mpg. So you're saying he got to something more efficient than a TDI? How much more efficient? Is more than 60% efficiency even physically realistic? Lets say you have a 90% efficient engine, where are you getting the heat to warm up the fuel? That thing's going to run stone cold!

Hey, the best I found for text over images is clearly the SVG format (and Inkscape). That's what I use on Pepper&Carrot. The graphic (raster) part of the artwork is a PNG or JPG with a relative link. That way, I have a single SVG per translation while keeping the same file for the artworks. It's less efficient than a system like gettext/po but it's the best I could find for this task. Bonus: SVGs are pretty compatible with Git, and they allow batch editing/fixing with text editors.
How about Portable Document Format (PDF)? It can hold layers, which can be shown or hidden as desired. Put the comic image on a bottom layer, then translation texts in various languages on front layers. #comics #i18n #FileFormats
@jdlh Hey, "text inside/over image" is still a problem with translation. Here I use SVG for my source ( but render jpg for online ) . The advantage : I can link the same background image URL in all translations of the same page in each SVG. I keep one SVG file per translation. Check the repo of my webcomic for checking how I manage all of that.
Okay here is my very simple concept for a #FediCard - a "business card" that encourages people to join the #Fediverse and links to @_elena 's explanatory video.
My idea is that people can hand these out at #protests, political organizations, and so forth - where politically active people gather who already have had bad experiences with commercial social media.
The back side could be customized further to list an instance which is most relevant to the place where you want to share them - for example, I want to print a variant for the gruene.social #Mastodon instance.
I will certainly try to apply my meagre #design skills to make this more appealing, but first I wanted to hear what you all think of this concept, and what your suggestions for improvement are.
(Note: If you want to play around with the design, I have made it available in #SVG / #Inkscape format. The template has the 85 x 55 mm size for European business cards, so you will want to adjust it for other regions.)

Tried the link. Finally found the Mastodon button. Went to joinmastodon, which still after all these years is an impenetrable list of scary things called servers.
Nothing to do with the card, which is a great idea, but on-boarding UI is still a mess.

I have always thought that introducing people to "Mastodon" was probably a mistake. What people need an invitation to join, and the materials templates to make it easy to join, would be local and club based servers which are advertised directly.
