Hi, I recently finished setting up my Asustor NAS, and I found the snapshotting setup in it a bit confusing, so I'm writing this as a quick reference that might be hopefully useful to others.
For context, my device is a AS1102TL, and it's running ADM 4.3.3, but I imagine it should apply to all recent Asustor devices.
First of all, the reason I picked Asustor instead of e.g. Synology... it's because it was not clear if the latter actually supported LUKS full disk encryption on an external usb hd. In Asustor you have to ssh into your NAS, but you can definitely do it.
The only gotcha: If you created the LUKS volume recently on another system, it's likely that it'll be using Argon2 for key stretching. A memory-intensive algorithm, for which the 1GB of memory provided by my AS1102TL is not enough. The solution is simply to add another key with a different algo, e.g. PBKDF2, or just create the volume on your Asustor. Either way, you're going to be able to read and write it both from the NAS and another Linux on your pc.
$ sudo $(which cryptsetup) luksOpen /dev/sdb1 encrypted # "encrypted" is just the name that I gave to the device, pick anything... remember the `-S` flag if you need to select a key in a different slot
$ sudo mount /dev/mapper/encrypted /mnt/USB1
... do what you want ...
$ sudo umount /mnt/USB1/
$ sudo $(which cryptsetup) luksClose encrypted
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that once mounted, the disk will be integrated in the ADM ui (you're not going to be able to see it in the "External Devices" ui, nor be able to select it as a destination in the "Backup & Restore" ui).
Normally, mounted external drives are available on paths like /share/USB0, /share/USB1. Maybe it could be possible to mount (or symlink your mount point for) your disk there, to make it usable to ADM, but by default /share is an immutable loop mount of /volume0/.@system/sharebase.loop
$ lsattr -d /share/
-----i------- /share/
Trying to workaround that with chattr and maybe manually modifying sharebase.loop felt a bit more risky than needed, so I didn't attempt that (the ADM ui doesn't provide a btrfs send functionality, so it's not very interesting for our purposes anyhow).
Now, you have two different approaches to accomplish incremental backups of btrfs snapshots, one where you just create them yourself from the CLI, and one where you can try to reuse the snapshots created in ADM.
I'm using the same naming convention, and same location that is used for snapshots created by ADM (you wouldn't get conflicts anyhow, unless you're creating another one in the exact same minute).
I recommend the -v verbose flag for btrfs receive, otherwise you're not going to see progress while the operation is ongoing.
That's it! Of course, the first send will have to happen without specifying a parent with -p, to do a full clone.
Reuse snapshots created in ADM
There are two problems with this: the snapshots created by ADM are not read-only and they are mounted right under the toplevel.
To address these issues:
sudo mount /dev/md1 -o subvol=/ /mnt/rootvol
sudo btrfs property set /mnt/rootvol/v2025079-2324/ ro true
then pick a parent snapshot, and send the incremental changes:
As above, use the -p and -v flags as needed. That's it!
If you're wondering why did we have to mount the / subvol, you can try without:
You can mount the snapshots directly in ADM's Snapshot Center, by toggling the Preview toggle for a snapshot. In that case, they are still going to be RW, though mounted as RO. You can deal with that by remounting: sudo mount -o remount,rw /volume1/.@snapshots/v2025079-2324/ && sudo btrfs property set /volume1/.@snapshots/v2025079-2324/ ro true,
You can then try to send the changes, but what you're going to get is:
$ sudo btrfs send -p /volume1/.@snapshots/v2025079-0824/ /volume1/.@snapshots/v2025079-2324
ERROR: not on mount point: /volume1/.@snapshots/v2025079-2324
The error is a bit confusing (you have mounted the volume! why is that not good enough?), but you can get a bit of clarity with btrfs subvolume list.
$ sudo btrfs subvolume list /volume1 -qua

as you can see, the snapshots created in ADM are directly under top level 5 and if you list them under /volume1 (which is just the mount point for the /base subvolume), they are not found directly underneath (despite them being mounted there), which is why you see them being under their own <FS_TREE>.
Conversely, the ones that you can create directly from the cli under volume1, appear as top level 256 and they are under /base if you list the subvolumes under /mnt/rootvol.
PS, while I was closing the dozens of tabs that I opened to investigate how everything fits together, a note on what I wrote earlier:

mounting the disk on a path already accessible by ADM file explorer doesn't work because of permission issues, similar to the immutable flag that you can see with lsattr... but someone on Reddit had another workaround:
I mounted the opened device to another path already accessible by ADM file explorer. I don't think it will matter where really. But in my case I made two partitions on an external USB drive. The first partition is a small exFat formatted (10GB). The second partition takes up the rest of the drive and is formatted with cryptsetup (LUKS). Finally, to use this I open the LUKS device and mount it to a location in the first partition (which is automatically mounted by ADM)

Problème : l’entité va sous-traiter l’événement à l’agence de com’ #Havas Paris pour un total de 380 000 euros sans mettre d’autres sociétés en concurrence. Soit une infraction caractérisée au Code des marchés publics…
Une décennie plus tard, pas question pour Muriel Pénicaud de porter le chapeau. Face au juge en octobre 2023, elle a assuré que la soirée avait été entièrement pilotée par sa directrice de la communication Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau, « une cadre dirigeante avec une rémunération de 12 000 euros quand la mienne était de 13 000 euros », précise-t-elle. Avant de poursuivre : « Jamais jusqu’à début mars 2016, je n’ai su que la totalité était confiée à Havas. On me l’a caché sciemment. »
Des mails compromettants exhumés Au fil de leur enquête, les policiers ont pourtant mis la main sur plusieurs mails qui montrent que l’ex-patronne de Business France avait un œil sur le bon déroulement de la soirée. Le 19 novembre 2015, elle indique à une conseillère d’Emmanuel Macron que « Business France prépare activement Las Vegas ». Le lendemain, après une réunion d’une heure et demie entre ses équipes et le cabinet du ministre, elle reçoit un premier canevas de la soirée avec la mention d’un budget prévisionnel de 300 000 euros.
De quoi prouver sa connaissance du coût de la soirée et de la nécessité de passer un appel d’offres avec mise en concurrence ? « Un budget de 300 000 euros ne veut pas dire une commande publique par Business France de 300 000 euros, il y a très souvent plusieurs cofinanceurs », argue-t-elle. Une version contestée par Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau, mise en examen pour « favoritisme », un mois plus tard devant le même juge : « Muriel Pénicaud a été informée que Havas s’occupait de tout et du budget. Et elle savait bien qu’il n’y avait pas eu d’appels d’offres. »
Pour se dédouaner, Muriel Pénicaud met en avant un audit réalisé après coup, à sa demande, par le cabinet EY qui la met hors de cause. Mais l’avocat de Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau pointe que les auteurs de l’audit n’ont jamais entendu sa cliente, qui avait quitté Business France entretemps, alors que les autres membres de la direction ont pu s’expliquer et… modifier le contenu du rapport d’audit. Pis, ils ont même pu explorer la boîte mail de Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau pour ajouter des éléments à charge. « Le rapport d’audit n’a pas été réalisé à la suite d’une enquête interne rigoureuse, objective et impartiale », tacle l’avocat dans une note.
Pression des conseillers d’Emmanuel Macron Un point semble faire consensus : la soirée a été préparée dans l’urgence. Avec des conseillers d’Emmanuel Macron qui multiplient les doléances : refus d’une soirée exclusivement organisée par le Medef, demande d’un lieu plus central que l’année précédente, échange avec une star de la tech américaine, etc. En trois semaines, le budget prévisionnel bondit de quelque 150 000 euros. « Fais vite, il faut que le cabinet soit content », serinait Muriel Pénicaud à Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau selon ses dires.
Une précipitation qui a empêché le lancement d’un marché public en bonne et due forme ? « Il n’était matériellement pas possible d’organiser cet événement en respectant scrupuleusement les procédures d’achats, avance le responsable du contrôle interne de Business France face aux enquêteurs. Soit il aurait fallu savoir dire non, soit demander aux organismes de tutelle les dérogations idoines. » « Si un appel d’offres avait été lancé, cela aurait tué le projet », lâche carrément un salarié d’Havas.
Signe de la panique : à la veille de Noël, le directeur financier de Business France doit utiliser sa carte bancaire personnelle pour bloquer la réservation de l’hôtel The Linq à hauteur de 64 000 dollars. « Je risque l’interdit bancaire et je ne vais pas casser mon assurance-vie pour financer la French Tech hors process, y a des limites », s’énerve-t-il. Avant que Muriel Pénicaud permette son remboursement en faisant passer la facture en note de frais.
Havas accusé de « recel de favoritisme » Au cours de l’enquête, le juge s’est aussi penché sur d’éventuelles collusions entre les dirigeants de Business France et l’agence de communication Havas. Le directeur d’Havas Paris Fabrice Conrad affirme qu’il était persuadé que la soirée de Las Vegas s’intégrait à un « contrat-cadre » que son agence avait remporté quelques mois plus tôt pour une campagne de promotion de Business France. Et qu’il n’y avait donc pas besoin d’une nouvelle mise en concurrence. « Je suis en charge de l’opérationnel. Je ne suis pas un juriste », se défend-il.
Un argument « difficilement audible » pour le responsable du contrôle interne de Business France qui estime qu’« Havas Paris savait qu’il s’agissait de deux opérations de communication distinctes, y compris sous l’angle budgétaire ». Le 15 décembre, à trois semaines de la soirée, Fabrice Conrad s’inquiète d’ailleurs par mail de l’absence d’un « go budgétaire » de Business France. Autant d’éléments qui ont conduit le juge à mettre en examen Havas Paris, puis Fabrice Conrad en avril 2024, pour « recel de favoritisme ».
Le haut management d’Havas avait été convié aux agapes de Las Vegas. Le 1er janvier 2016, un responsable de l’agence de com' informe une conseillère du ministre que « M. Yannick Bolloré [le PDG d’Havas] a eu M. Macron au téléphone qui l’aurait invité au dîner prévu mercredi à Las Vegas ». Dans un autre message, Fabrice Conrad indique à Stéphane Fouks, le vice-président d’Havas, que « Muriel serait ravie de t’y voir ». En 2014, quelques semaines avant sa prise de poste chez Business France, Muriel Pénicaud avait déjà déjeuné avec Stéphane Fouks pour avoir ses conseils.
La candidature du neveu Plus gênant, en août 2016, la patronne de Business France poussera la candidature de son neveu pour un contrat d’apprentissage chez Havas. Une demande que Fabrice Conrad relaie au responsable des recrutements avec ce commentaire : « C’est un GROS client et donc une candidature à BIEN traiter. » Après un premier échec de son neveu, Muriel Pénicaud insiste. Le directeur d’Havas Paris lui promet alors « de le faire entrer en contact avec d’autres structures du groupe ». Le neveu décrochera finalement un contrat de onze moins au sein de la holding du groupe Bolloré, relève le juge.
Dernier détail piquant : ce n’est que dans l’avion du retour qu’Emmanuel Macron semble se soucier du coût des festivités. « Le ministre souhaiterait (moi aussi) savoir combien coûte la soirée », écrit Muriel Pénicaud à sa directrice de la communication le 8 janvier. Une demande que Fabienne Bothy-Chesneau juge « étrange » : « Je pense qu’à ce moment-là elle réalise le problème et se couvre ». Un peu tard peut-être.

This image tells the story of redemption for one lonely star. The young star MP Mus (PDS 66) was thought to be all alone in the Universe, surrounded by nothing but a featureless band of gas and dust called a protoplanetary disc. In most cases, the material inside a protoplanetary disc condenses to form new planets around the star, leaving large gaps where the gas and dust used to be. These features are seen in almost every disc – but not in MP Mus’s.
When astronomers first observed it with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), they saw a smooth, planet-free disc, shown here in the right image. The team, led by Álvaro Ribas, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge, UK, gave this star another chance and re-observed it with ALMA at longer wavelengths that peer even deeper into the protoplanetary disc than before. These new observations, shown in the left image, revealed a gap and a ring that had been obscured in previous observations, suggesting that MP Mus might have company after all.
Meanwhile, another piece of the puzzle was being revealed in Germany as Miguel Vioque, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory, studied this same star with the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Gaia mission. Vioque noticed something suspicious – the star was wobbling. A bit of gravitational detective work, together with insights from the new disc structures revealed by ALMA, showed that this motion could be explained by the presence of a gas giant exoplanet.
Both teams presented their joint results in a new paper published in Nature Astronomy. In what they describe as “ a beautiful merging of two groups approaching the same object from different angles ”, they show that MP Mus isn’t so boring after all.

Over the span of two days, one of the last remaining Palestinian communities between Ramallah and Jericho was uprooted from its land.
On the evening of July 2, dozens of Israeli settlers descended on the West Bank shepherding village of Al-Muarrajat. They broke into homes, stole around 60 sheep, and erected a small outpost inside the village. By the next morning, settlers were seen sitting alongside Israeli soldiers at the newly built outpost, now moved just meters from the village school.
Fearing further theft, residents began evacuating their livestock. By Friday, families were packing their belongings and leaving en masse. Thirty families — 177 people in total — were forced out, all but erasing the community.
“Residents were forced to leave at gunpoint,” said 28-year-old Aaliyah Malihat, a local activist, as her family gathered their possessions. “People have nowhere to go. They’re scattering to nearby villages.”

Let’s leave aside, for now, the references to comic book multiverses and the consequences in quantum physics. Let us also leave aside Don Schördinger’s animosity towards cats, and that he obviously did not know much about those felines (anyone who has dealt with them knows that they would not let themselves be caught, much less allow themselves to be locked up, without protesting and without defending themselves -even more so if it is a… cat-dog-). Let’s also not take too much notice that the cat is imprisoned and condemned to death, unless someone sees fit to open the box when the lethal mechanism has not been activated, and the cat jumps out and frees itself from the prison.
This theoretical exercise is supposed to be a basis for showing that worlds in several universes are possible, that is, in a multiverse (although it is also to show that the laws of quantum physics do not apply in everyday life).
As far as my limited knowledge of comics allows me, I understand that, in those diverse worlds, the individual still prevails, but in different versions. In one world, Sheldon Cooper (TV series “The Big Bang Theory”), is a scientist with social problems. In another, he is an irredeemable womanizer. In another, he is a “popular” judge in Mexico’s judicial system (oh, I know, my perversity is sublime).
And this digression that, I hope, is perplexing, comes to the topic, or point supposedly that even with the imaginative capacity to raise the simultaneous existence of the living cat and the dead cat, the possibility (or the universe) of there being one or several cats that refuse to enter the box is not raised. And perhaps with the aggravating factor that the supposed cat is actually a cat-dog.
In pointing out some possibilities, others are omitted.
When talking about the capitalist system, the different proposals refer to what they can do to improve the conditions of the cat locked in the trap, to lengthen its life (or its chances of life), or to “humanize” the lethal device.
It is, shall we say, what progressivism is all about. Definition of progressivism? Well, those who are leftists until the eve of taking office and having a position, office, pay, well, then. Then they stop being leftist, they become the establishment, and disguise their pragmatism (which leads them to ally and join their enemies of the eve -and to distance themselves from their social past-), as “political realism.” It is, then, a capital-friendly left. That is to say, a “cool”, pretty, demure and blushing right wing.
In this case, progressivism promises, on the eve of the event, to free the cat from its prison. Example: the crime of being born, growing up and fighting in Palestinian lands is not to accept being part of the showcase of capital. And to resist and rebel against the machine. The machine wants a recreational center in Gaza and Palestinian civilization is in its way, the Palestinian people are fighting for a land to live in.
Palestine is the best example of the terminal crisis of the so called “Nation States” and their governments. They do not command, they only obey at convenience. They are incapable of presenting an independent, dignified and consistent foreign policy.
And in the ongoing mass murder, the complicity and neglect of the governments of the planet (with a few exceptions), is pathetic. The police of the different European and American governments repressing the demonstrations for the cessation of the genocide in Palestine, are the best oratory about Western “humanism”.
In the world above, European governments are the idle and useless court of the reigning king, Russia and China are the counts and dukes conspiring for regicide, and offering an alternate monarch. The rest of the national governments in the world, except for those who have clearly spoken out against it, are the busy pages, stressed by the continuous demands and harassments of the royal family.
Who are those that contemplate, operate, have fun and make bets on what happens in the box? The big financial, commercial, industrial and, now, digital and aerospace capital.
The governments of the world, for the most part, are just the ticket-takers of the bets, the “brokers” on the stock exchanges where the wars are always up, and life below… down. And, as the Mileis of the world are and will be, they are the ones who are sent to buy and serve the wine that will preside over the monarchic banquets (the chainsaw is an autochthonous detail).

@brucelawson, there are a lot of crappy extension in the Chrome Store. It's always recommended to look for the origin of it. If there isn't a link to an homepage or author (best FOSS), or made by Google itself, then it's to take with much precaution or search an alternative (read ALWAYS TOS and PP).
It's good that in Vivaldi most extensions in the Store are anyway redundant, only needed extensions for very few, occasional tasks.
The mencioned one certainly isn't mandatory, it can be done with most graphic apps, eg.with Minipaint right in Vivaldi and even in the WebPanel, and values can be copied as note or in the OS clipboard.

I've been using Linux on and off throughout the years, but lately I've fallen out of the loop somewhat. Started with Slackware around 1998, Kubuntu in the 2000's, Ubuntu 2010's, Kali and Mandrake 2020's -> on my laptop, Ubuntu server on my RasPi. At work, we have a few Fedora servers I have to maintain. So not a complete novice, but somewhat obsolete info.
I have been looking at the immutable distros, like Bazzite and Pop!_OS as I've done the whole song and dance of constantly repairing my distro because of various issues, and I'd like my main recreational machine & distro to be low maintenance, I get to fix linux servers at work enough already, I don't want to bring that home.
With gaming, I've understood that linux has come a loooooong way since I last tried sometime around TBC Launch for WoW when Wine barely worked with it.
Music composing is a little annoying, since apparently both Ableton and FL studio are not an option. I've heard good things about Reaper, but I'll have to do some more research. Feel free to educate me on this topic if you have some insider info. I don't play live sets, just compose and mix.
Video editing, currently I use Davinci Resolve, and apparently it works fine on Linux, just some limitations and shenanigans with codecs. Alternatives are welcome, I don't need 90% of what resolve offers, I can make do with a simpler software as well.

EDIT: Ended up installing Bazzite, and KVM virtualizing OpenSuse Tumbleweed and vanilla Fedora, keeping my backups for now on the NAS so I will be able to easily nuke & go with Tumbleweed (I think) next, since so many people seem to swear by it. Thank you everyone for the great advice!

I would say, that Fedora and Debian are mostly care-free if you go with the defaults. Fedora can enable Flatpak as part of the installation and for Debian the installation guide can be found on Flathub. In both cases you can then install packages using gnome-software.
I have edited videos with Blender, it has a video editor built-in which is very intuitive. And you can explore compositing with it later. Text and graphics for videos I created with Inkscape (export them to PNGs). The graphics are just linked, so if you need to correct a spelling mistake in Inkscape you can overwrite the original PNG and Blender will pick it up. I think with Blender you can use all video codecs that are supported by ffmpeg.
For music you can have a look at Ardour. I did not use it in a long time, but previous version were enough for me to master a track.
Games: Just install Steam through Flatpak (gnome-software). But it depends mostly on the game whether it will be playable on Linux; check protondb.

it is surprisingly good, when i first found out about it i was kinda blown away with how competitive it is with stuff like Kdenlive and the ancient version of sony vegas i used to use
For the music stuff, there's also Bitwig and Ardour for good DAWs, Ardour's free so that's what I use. There's yabridge for VSTs, though it's hit and miss, and might be more tinkering than you want as you have to use an older version of wine. I've also heard about using carla for this purpose, but I haven't messed around with that so I can't attest to it's usefulness. I use Arch for all this, so ymmv on Kinoite, I didn't try any of it out when I was on Bazzite, but I can tell you that Bazzite was great for gaming!
Cheers for the music points. I got some pointers, that Nobara is great for music stuff, and Bazzite can be optimized for it, but takes some effort and fiddling. I gotta take a look at Ardour and Bitwig, see if I vibe with them. How are they with older (my keyboard is around 2010 I believe) MIDI devices, do you happen to have experience?
I don't, unfortunately, I'm a guitarist primarily. I did see some MIDI stuff in the menus though, so I think it'd be fine? I think it'd probably depend on drivers, so you'd probably have to check if your device has Linux support, if it's not just taken care of by the generic drivers. You might ask on linuxmusicians.com, they're a great resource!
If your primary usecase is going to be music (so a need for realtime capabilities for stuff like recording, VSTs and DAWs) then I do not reccomend immutable distros for a simple reason: you will probably/eventually need to hack something up to get it to work and at that moment, the immutability is just extra work.
As far as I have tried fiddling with the music stack on Linux (which is not that much), the whole pipewire/JACK/carla stack is a bit messy and I can't imagine it working with flatpacks due to the sandboxing/permissions.
Throw a dart, pick a distro. My God these "help me pick a distro" posts are irritating. You're not special. Your usecase is not special. Distros are "similar but different".
What always gets me is recommendations for what seem like weird obscure distros that I've never heard of.
What should I use for gaming? Well, for that you need Fizzlegit! It was released in 2025, is a derivative of a derivative of a derivative, and uses the same repos, but it has Steam preinstalled. Its totally next-gen!

Nvidia can be an ass to work with on a lot of distros, but Bazzite delivers the right drivers OOTB.

Bazzite is setup for gaming OOTB; it's bundled with Steam and Lutris, makes use of custom kernels/schedulers to optimize performance for gaming and contains many other goodies like excellent controller/peripheral support.
Has a built-in just script that downloads, installs and sets up Davinci Resolve for ya: ujust install-resolve
Music composing
This is the only I'm not 100% sure yet because you haven't provided explicitly yet what you'd like to use. But, I can't image it would be harder to get this running on Bazzite compared to other distros.

Through utilizing the bootc model, Bazzite is as low maintenance as they come.
I'd advocate for Bazzite too as you mentioned you just want a start and go machine. With DAWS you've also got Ardour and Bitwig both have great compatibility and flathub. There's also vcv and a few other great tools for music creation.
I'll suggest opensuse tumbleweed, CachyOS or Fedora Everything works on them but you should know that there are lot of cool tools are coming up recently on Linux. Like LACT and alot more.
I've got your exact hardware configuration and use case. Pop_OS broke on me after 18 months due to GNOME extensions I think. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma works really well for gaming/coding and general use, though I'm dual booting for Ableton Live on windows and the occasional VR.

If we want Europeans to stop using so many €15-45 flights on the Continent, we need to make the trains cheap and running on time. Currently the trains are eye-wateringly expensive and completely unreliable. If you're not just a dogmatic environmentalist you're going to choose the planes every time.
