Thats also why that generation is/was so successful in IT. I basically got into programming out of curiosity what all those things I need to type in to load game are. Also back then you could tweak those games. I remember reading I believe Pirates as it was game written in Basic and learning so much stuff.

My roof sprinkler experiment was a success. It reduced my air conditioning by half. If you have well water or arenโ€™t raped by water cartels I suggest it. My water schedule is 15 on and an hour off for evaporation. I just used a flat soaker/spray hose and a cheap chink WiFi hose valve. I 3d printed peak vent hose holders to get the north and south sides of the roof.

@eriner I takes the whole 15 to completely wet the roof and it still works well in humid air. If I sunk more money into the system I could make a nice grid and really tune it for some short spray times. Probably next year. Shit maybe Iโ€™ll plumb in a spigot to the roof while Iโ€™m doing the AC pex. Less ghetto than the hose running along the fascia. Slightly less ghetto anyway!

For me, it's not about nostalgia. It's not about "RETVRN" to anything.

For me, retro is about the people. Most of them are awesome. Much nicer in general than I am -- as long as you can tune out the wankers.

It's also about the tech -- retro systems, in many ways, work better than new ones.

A retro system does what you tell it, and NOTHING ELSE. It exists to serve you. It doesn't pretend to offer things it doesn't. It just does what a computer is supposed to do.

yeah, i agree. i would argue that it's sort of (but not entirely) nostalgia (though my brain works in a weird way so i could be conflating nostalgia for something else), but specifically for the time where the computer was like this. though you're right that it's not about "retvrn" because we all know the past was less good than now. it's just the computers from then happened to be better. although, it is possible to make things in current day that are better than retro things (example: tangara is better than ipod)

i only used them prior when part of paid gift sub i received ๐Ÿ˜… but it worked pretty well. i had used their client (circa 2018) on a t440 and it worked but felt bloaty(?).

Yes, they do support "normal" WireGuard โ€” over UDP that is. Last I checked, in-kernel implementation worked fine for me. Alas, we have localโ€ฆ "peculiarities" โ€” WireGuard connections to the outside world are filtered by most ISPs and cell carriers. Wrapping it in TLS makes it somewhat obfuscated โ€” at least it looks like a legitimate connection, not something-something VPN. Right now on my phone to access "unfiltered" Internet I have to use WireGuard to connect to my home network where I have a box always connected to Proton over OpenVPN and use Squid proxy running on it โ€” not exactly your average guy's setup, but I don't really mind as it enables me to access my internal resources directly from my phone.
Sadly, OpenVPN is also not guaranteed to always work โ€” sometimes they start filtering its traffic too ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
Some get a cheap VPS and host a VPN server for even more obfuscated protocols like V2/VLess โ€” good protocols, I believe that's what they use to bypass censorship in China! Problem is โ€” sometimes they start blocking IP ranges, AFAIK currently Hetzner and CloudFlare are blocked, so they might also block my VPS at some point. Proton at least has hundreds of entry points belonging to IP ranges of different countries โ€” at least some of them should remain reachable. That is why I think figuring out how to use their flavour of WireGuard wrapped in TLS is still a good strategy for now.

I successfully upgraded my system disk from 256GB to 1To, it was a bit stressful, but everything went according to plan! I used a Live USB to run dd, then gparted, then I removed the original drive and turned the computer back on. I have back ups of everything, you shouldn't do any of that without a back up. Mixing source and destination could destroy everything.
