🇬🇧 Launch of the XMPP / Fediverse Bridge!

You've been waiting for it, here it is: from now on you'll be able to chat directly between Fediverse and XMPP instant messaging! All from your usual account and application, without changing a thing.

So how does it work? Very simply, two twin robot accounts will be responsible for passing your messages to the other world.

So from Mastodon: your contact is @xmpp_bridge, who you can follow to sign up, then send and receive messages from XMPP.

Each time you send a message, you do as you would for any private message: mention the robot account from Mastodon or send a private message from an application such as Pixelfed or Friendica, for example.

Address your XMPP recipient(s) with the prefix xmpp: followed by their address (without spaces). You can reply directly to any message you receive.

You can also manage your block lists to prevent spam, and you can report any abuse to your administrator.

Not interested? Don't worry, you won't receive anything until you register.

Get started! Obviously, this is only of interest if you know XMPP contacts (and vice versa). But it's also an opportunity to try out and promote instant messaging.

Test it out and report any bugs or useful comments to me, so that I can improve the service.

I hope you enjoy this new service, which is fairly exclusive but open to everyone!

🔄 Please boost to spread the good word in the Universe.

@Goffi
Salut !

Why is this great news? Well, it serves as a clear reminder that federal agents can be arrested when they break the law. If they assault people—or kidnap them—or commit any crimes at all, they can and should end up in handcuffs.
“No one is above the law, regardless of their position or badge,” LA County DA Nathan Hochman said. He’s right, but it shouldn’t take this level of carnage for them to end up behind bars. - Scott Dworkin

The Guest

يا ضيفنا لو زرتنا لوجدتنا
نحن الضيوف وأنت رب المنزل

“O our guest, if you were to visit us, you would find
That we are the guests, and you are the master of the house.”

Mohammad Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri (Abu Khaled), or most commonly known as Mohammed Deif — The Guest: A man who led the resistance from the shadows, his name chanted by millions, though little was known about him. But that didn’t matter. What mattered was that he was the shadow of the resistance, dedicating his life to the fight for freedom. And the people knew that.

Born in Gaza in 1965, Deif studied science at the Islamic University of Gaza. During his time there, he was active in religious, student, and humanitarian work—along with a passion for theater. In 1989, the occupation forces arrested him, detaining him without trial for 16 months on charges of working with Hamas’ military wing.

His release coincided with the rise of the Qassam Brigades, which had begun executing operations deep within the zionist entity. Deif moved to the West Bank alongside several Qassam leaders from Gaza, overseeing the formation of a West Bank branch. He rose to prominence after the assassination of Imad Aqel in 1993, and oversaw several successful operations against the occupation, including the capture of zionist soldier Nachshon Wachsman in 1994.

In the year 2000, he was arrested once again by the Palestinian Authority but managed to escape detention following the outbreak of the Second Intifada. This marked a significant turning point in the development of Hamas’ military capabilities.

Mohammed Deif was appointed as the commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades in 2002. Upon taking leadership, he established a military training and development academy, later revealed after the occupation’s withdrawal from Gaza in 2005.

Deif is credited with numerous strategic successes for Al-Qassam, most notably in the field of missile development. Under his command, the Qassam Brigades transformed their arsenal—from primitive rockets with a few kilometers’ range to missiles capable of reaching every occupied Palestinian city, from the far south to the north.

Mohammed Deif rarely appeared on media, the last being on the morning of October 7, 2023, when he announced Al-Aqsa Flood. He survived seven assassination attempts by the occupation, in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2014, and twice in 2021. He suffered burns, lost an eye, and, according to occupation claims, lost a leg and sustained arm injuries in another.

In 2014, another attempt on his life killed his wife, Widad Mustafa Harb Deif, and children including a his three-year-old daughter and his seven-month-old son, Ali. Yet, Deif remained committed to resistance.

Despite never revealing his face to the public, Deif became one of the most beloved and respected figures in the resistance. People from different countries and backgrounds pledged allegiance to him, for what he represented.

“Put the sword before the sword—we are the people of Mohammed Deif!”

He was nicknamed “the guest” because for decades, he slept in a different house every night, avoiding detection and assassination. The occupation threatened to kill him. The people answered: “Our homes are yours.”

Mohammed Deif was the resistance as it is: from the people, for the people.

Glory to Mohammed Deif, the shadow of the resistance who remains for as long as its light keeps shining.

Abu Khaled, the guest, master of every home and every heart.

PKK’nin Kendisini Fesih Kararının Tarihsel Önemi Üzerine-I

When asked why the current Department of Justice might be investigating him, former CIA Director John Brennan answered, as was his wont, with a complete lie: “I am clueless about what it is exactly that they may be investigating me for.”

Clueless? Hardly. Brennan knows full well that his fingerprints are on some of the greatest scandals of the last decade. These machinations have threatened the very integrity of our institutions and elections.

in reply to YoungBlood

He has a record of serially lying to Congress, the public, and the media, and doing so emphatically.

In 2011, as the government’s chief counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan absurdly insisted that the Obama administration’s drone strikes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border had not killed a single civilian noncombatant. Yet multiple sources proved the claim was clearly false. In truth, the number of innocents killed was likely somewhere between 50 and 70.

in reply to YoungBlood

In 2014, as director of the CIA, Brennan lied again, doubling down by denying that CIA operatives were hacking into U.S. Senate staffers’ computers.

“As far as the allegations of the CIA hacking into Senate computers, nothing could be further from the truth. . . . We wouldn’t do that. I mean, that’s just beyond the, you know, the scope of reason in terms of what we do.”

Here, too, he was caught lying and forced to apologize—but never charged with perjury.

in reply to HaleakalaCrater

@HaleakalacraterThere are less and less insects (thank you RoundUp) so have you tried hand-pollinating them with a soft pain brush? Some plants, like tomato plants are self pollinating but even then, sometimes you have to give them a hand by gently shaking the plant like if wind made them move a bit.

Some others, like bell peppers, if you pollinate them, can lose their flowers if they have too much water. I would look it up with search criteria being zucchini loses flowers or something similar.

Oh and for my cucumbers, I seem to notice they are male flowers and female flowers which bear the fruit. After a time, the male flowers fall...

in reply to HaleakalaCrater

@HaleakalacraterExcellent. It's time-consuming if you have to hand pollinate but quite frankly, when I take care of my garden I really enjoy it, so much in fact. It's my way of being in touch with nature. And it's also that bulb moment over your head when you do something that helps your plants along. I might have to shut up, I'm starting to sound like a loony. 😂
in reply to Chronic-Yonic

@astarsscreams @HaleakalacraterI actually had to have 4 wasp nests destroyed last week, I don't like doing anything like that, but they were up under the eaves of the house and they were getting arsey around outside. Had they been elsewhere in garden, further from house would maybe have left them, but had trouble with them there before and couldn't go outside in peace.

Today is Bastille Day, a French national holiday that commemorates the Storming of the Bastille prison in 1789.

The crowd busted down the doors of the prison fortress to free French guards they believed had been imprisoned for refusing to fire on the people, but instead only found seven prisoners - four counterfeiters, two mentally ill men and a sexual deviant imprisoned at the behest of his own family.

This is a holiday the French celebrate.

My roof sprinkler experiment was a success. It reduced my air conditioning by half. If you have well water or aren’t raped by water cartels I suggest it. My water schedule is 15 on and an hour off for evaporation. I just used a flat soaker/spray hose and a cheap chink WiFi hose valve. I 3d printed peak vent hose holders to get the north and south sides of the roof.

@eriner I takes the whole 15 to completely wet the roof and it still works well in humid air. If I sunk more money into the system I could make a nice grid and really tune it for some short spray times. Probably next year. Shit maybe I’ll plumb in a spigot to the roof while I’m doing the AC pex. Less ghetto than the hose running along the fascia. Slightly less ghetto anyway!

Seems like this would be the ideal place to sell them.

Dexys Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen

“Come on Eileen” is a teenage love song, as the lyrics imply. Eileen is just now blossoming into a woman, and the singer appears to be one of her peers. The majority of the song is dedicated to his attempts to – succinctly put – get intimate with her. However, he does not perceive this as an act of lust. Rather he believes that his love for her will endure forever.

A plurality of Ukrainians believe that, within ten years, their state will be "a country with a ruined economy and a large outflow of people," according to a new report from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

The study asked respondents to choose the most likely between two futures: one with a Ukraine in tatters and one with a prosperous nation as part of the European Union. Forty-seven percent chose the more pessimistic option.

I just watched a YouTube video called “Movies Historians Absolutely Despise” and once again, I’m reminded of how carelessly, even dangerously, “history” has been treated in mainstream culture.

It’s not just the inaccuracies. It’s the way those inaccuracies get sold to us as truth.

Many of the films highlighted were marketed as “based on real events,” when in fact, they were strategically crafted lies, for dramatic effect.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

When you grow up believing these stories, taught in schools, reinforced in media, echoed in everyday conversation, undoing them doesn’t just take learning something new. It requires unlearning everything you thought you knew.

That’s why the impact of misinformation and disinformation is so hard to challenge.

Because when a lie is wrapped in nostalgia, repetition, and collective belief, it doesn’t feel like a lie.
It feels like “common sense.”
It feels like “truth.”

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

It feels like “the way it’s always been.”

And that’s exactly the problem.

So much of what we’re told is “fact” is actually fabrication, designed to preserve the status quo. And when that status quo has always served you, it becomes easier to defend the lie than to face the cost of truth.

This realization has made it increasingly difficult to trust the intentions of people and institutions I’m not in community with.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

Because without shared values, without accountability, without relationship, truth becomes negotiable. And liberation becomes impossible.

That’s why I’m building spaces for truth-telling and unlearning. For people who are ready to go beyond the myths, challenge what we’ve inherited, and create new narratives rooted in honesty, liberation, and equity.

in reply to Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

If you’re feeling the same way, if you’ve been questioning what’s real, what’s right, and what’s worth rebuilding, join us inside the Profit Without Oppression (PWO) community.

This is not just a learning space. It’s a doing space. A place for people ready to lead differently, live more fully, and divest from the lie that profit requires harm.

Mel and Kim - Respectable

Respectable" is a song by English pop duo Mel and Kim from their only studio album, F.L.M.
It was released on 18 February 1987 and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for one week in March of that year.
British born Simon West was the director. He later went onto direct such films as CON AIR starring Nicholas Cage, THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER starring John Travolta and Lara Croft: TOMB RAIDER starring Angelina Jolie.
Sadly Mel passed away from cancer just three years after the song’s release.

For me, it's not about nostalgia. It's not about "RETVRN" to anything.

For me, retro is about the people. Most of them are awesome. Much nicer in general than I am -- as long as you can tune out the wankers.

It's also about the tech -- retro systems, in many ways, work better than new ones.

A retro system does what you tell it, and NOTHING ELSE. It exists to serve you. It doesn't pretend to offer things it doesn't. It just does what a computer is supposed to do.

in reply to mos_8502 🇨🇦

yeah, i agree. i would argue that it's sort of (but not entirely) nostalgia (though my brain works in a weird way so i could be conflating nostalgia for something else), but specifically for the time where the computer was like this. though you're right that it's not about "retvrn" because we all know the past was less good than now. it's just the computers from then happened to be better. although, it is possible to make things in current day that are better than retro things (example: tangara is better than ipod)
