This image, taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft on July 14, 2015, is the most accurate natural color image of Pluto. This natural-color image results from refined calibration of data gathered by New Horizons’ color Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC). The processing creates images that would approximate the colors that the human eye would perceive, bringing […]

I'm looking to degoogle but have learnt that none of the alternate phone OSs support samsung phones due to them being locked down pretty tightly. I can't afford a new phone.

If I stay with the stock android OS and change all of my google services to alternatives, can google still spy on those services (email, calendar, task lists)?

I've already disabled Gemini and most google services except email, calendar and tasks

Sailors travel to the Broken Islands for solitude, with the expectation that others will not anchor too closely. For the past 2 days boats have been anchoring very, and I mean very near us(Gulf Islands in August on a weekend kind of close). With a gale on no less.

Seems like Pino attracts both hummingbirds *and* boats.

The famous Tricolore Salad which is a staple in Italy.

Belgian Endive
Radicchio
Arugula

Belgian Endive and Radicchio are in the Chicory family and are good sources of inulin which is great for your gut microbiome.

Arugula is a cruciferous vegetable high in sulfurophane which is a powerful antioxidant and an NFR1 activator.

Add some pecorino romano or even parmigiano reggiano cheese to kick up a notch, both are sources of C15 and CLA.

Toss a couple of olives and nuts on top. BOOM!

A Honey Dijon Mustard Vinegrette (or Allulose sweetened) supercharges the sulfurophane in the arugula.

Great salad to add to your repertoire.

MPV with yt-dlp lets you stream from all the same services. With yt-dlp, by itself, you can download from them. If Tor is running, you can even use Tor. You have to be careful to keep yt-dlp up to date. You shouldn't install the version in your distro. It's always going to be about 3 years old and mostly useless.

MinusBrowser (you already knew I was a user of it) has this built in. You can use the Gopher service IdiotBox to search YouTube, and just click on the links. You do have to have the dependencies installed: MPV, XTerm, and Zenity. You also need the plug-in script at codeberg.org/giXzkGsc/Minus-Pr… That plug-in script, yt.sh, will install and keep yt-dlp up to date.

I don't use a smartphone, so the phone app is useless to me. I only connect to the Internet with a PC running a Linux distro. I favor Mint, Linux Lite, and MX Linux. I sometimes use Tails, but I don't like using Gnome as my DE.

Hah, I have defeated the Windows 11 requirement to use a Microsoft account by pressing shift+F10 to get a command prompt and then running:

start ms-cxh:localonly

I did this later in the process with no requirement to disconnect from the network.

You can't use the bypass account (no@thankyou.com) and you can't make up an email address because the installer sends a code to it.

It's broken, we're broken, we're breaking the world. If you refuse to acknowledge the situation, you can't cope with it. The king is mad, and Olympus is fallen, the the fortress is breached, whatever metaphor works for you.

What doesn't work is pretending things are normal, or that you can deal with America like it's a normal nation. It's a nuclear super power gone mad.

May I suggest an article you wrote back in 2013?

I’ve been thinking about this , too- and I agree with you. It’s not coming back.
But we need to be thinking about where we want to go in the aftermath of this. There were endemic problems in the US prior to this- and we should aim to solve for those moving forward.
I mean, it’s going to be bad for sure. But “getting it back” I think inadvertently implies “back” is someplace we should want to get to again. And given it led to where we are now, I’m not so sure.

Top church leaders in the Holy Land asserted Monday that Israeli authorities “facilitate and enable” the presence of Israeli settlers who have intensified attacks in recent weeks on the only entirely Christian Palestinian village remaining in the occupied West Bank.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa denounced an incident last week when settlers set fires near the community’s church.

The UK-wide protests on Saturday 12 July against the proscription of Palestine Action have exposed a stark divide in the policing response across different forces.

Raids and repression to different degrees across the country are indicative of the chaos the government has unleashed with its order that permits police to treat protestors holding cardboard signs as if they were terrorists.

The #US has imposed sanctions on #UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca #Albanese for using her position to oppose the most thoroughly documented #genocide in #history.

At the same time, the US has removed #Syria’s Al Qaeda franchise #HTS from its list of designated terrorist organizations, because its leader successfully carried out the regime change in Damascus that the western empire had been chasing for years.

At the same time, the #UK has added nonviolent anti-genocide activism group #PalestineAction to its list of banned terrorist organizations for opposing the #Gaza holocaust.

At the same time, the Israeli prime minister who is carrying out that holocaust has nominated the American president who is helping him perpetrate genocidal atrocities for a Nobel Peace Prize.

At the same time, Israel has continued its ban on foreign journalists entering Gaza, while also arresting the Israeli journalist who helped expose the #IDF officials who cooked up fake atrocity propaganda about burnt babies on# October7.

At the same time, the #Trump administration has enraged its MAGA base by concluding that Jeffrey #Epstein had no client list for any kind of sexual blackmail operation and definitely committed suicide.

The western empire is one nonstop insult to our intelligence. The peace advocates are terrorists, the genocide architects deserve peace prizes, the journalists are dangerous, and Epstein was just a wealthy socialite who made a few mistakes.

They do everything they can to make us stupid via #propaganda, Silicon Valley information control, and indoctrination schooling systems, and then they treat us like we’re morons for the rest of our lives.

The empire depends on ignorance. The more stupid, racist, gullible, and easily distracted we become, the nastier agendas the empire can roll out. Now here we are watching a live-streamed genocide unfold right in front of our eyes for nearly two years while being tube fed a daily diet of the most ridiculous lies imaginable.

As Aaron Bushnell said, this is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.

The company I work at (a plumbing and heating merchant) is having a massive push on renewables - heat pumps, solar, full works. Great! Much sustainable, many aura points.

In the background, I've been informed last week that marketing copy for the products we sell is now going to be generated by AI, and one of my responsibilities going forwards is going to be checking it for accuracy. This is on top of having Gemini thrust upon me and every meeting watching everyone using that god-forsaken "summary" tool* instead of just taking notes with a pen like a normal fucking human being.

Like, ffs, guys, the environmental impact of AI is hardly unknown here.

*as a rational human being, this has incentivised me to up my previously natural *mild but non-zero* usage of cockney rhyming slang to the max.

Fuck you, I will have Google thinking we're a butchers shop based in Barnet selling loaves of bread and pork pies to Scooby-Doo and Pete Tong by the end of August.

Hello Fedi friends!

Happy #BastilleDay to those who celebrate it.

TIL that the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was called the "Fête de la Fédération" (festival of the federation).

A fascinating read:

One of the problems with vibe coding is that the hardest part of software engineering is not writing the code, rather it's *choosing* what to code, and designing the system (and, later on, maintaining the code/operations/etc)

The barriers and investment cost to writing code is itself a *desirable* aspect of software engineering because it forces you to make careful, good choices before you invest in building something

Because the majority of the time spent writing, say, curl, is not writing the original tool but rather maintaining it over time, it's important to make good choices from the beginning, and at every major version change

I think it's an immature attitude borne out of people resigned to working within languages and frameworks that force a lot of 'boilerplate' on them, who haven't had a chance to develop the understanding that there are better approaches (more expressive *durable* abstractions, etc)

Proponents of the tool seem to extrapolate from the relative increase in ability of these tools in the past 6 months (mostly due to more cleverly wiring them up to the ability to use external tools and edit files) that in another 6 months they'll solve significant issues of design ... and I'm not seeing evidence of it
