If you're looking for a VPN, I really recommend mullvad.net

Based in Europe
Cheap - €5/month, no other pricing. I buy a month's worth when I need to
You can pay however you want, bank transfer, credit card, crypto, even post them a crisp €5 note

The simplicity of it makes it my fave. There's no sales or free trials, it's not cheaper if you buy 20 years with upfront. It has been reliable for what I use it for too.

Interesting, that Typhoid Mary desert. I hadn't heard that she made deadly ice cream. Just that she refused to cook for people. Even after the NY health Dept. told her to stop.

It was better pay cooking, than maid work. Eventually they sent her to a NY island (N. Brothers) to live in isolation.

They probably could have just removed her appendix. Where the Typhoid germ was harbored. A lot of germs stay safe there.

Facebook Allegedly Detected When Teen Girls Deleted Selfies So It Could Serve Them Beauty Ads

Source: futurism.com/facebook-beauty-t…

The social media company likewise tracked when #adolescent girls deleted selfies, "so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment," according to Wynn-Williams. Other examples of Facebook's ad lechery are said to include the targeting of young mothers based on their emotional state, as well as emotional indexes mapped to racial groups, like a "Hispanic and African American Feeling Fantastic Over-index."

"Google needs to keep up the story that it is growing. Once Google stops growing, it becames a "mature" company and its PE ratio will fall from 20:1 to something more like 4:1, meaning an 80% collapse in the company's share price..." - @pluralistic

Not to be the I said so guy, but it's near a decade ago that I first started muttering about maybe not calling Google a startup anymore - which is essentially & rather insanely what they're still doing.

I've just finished reading _Technofeudalism_ by Yanis Varoufakis. If he's right, then it's politically urgent to escape from the clutches of Meta, Google, Amazon and the like as soon as possible.

Varoufakis' arguments reminded me of _Chokepoint Capitalism_ by Rebecca Giblin and @pluralistic, though according to Varoufakis the dominance of Amazon and the like has killed off capitalism and is a form of feudalism. I still want to compare these two analyses more carefully.

But Varoufakis' argument is: these platforms have managed to lure people in to work for them for free, and with every post and update on their platforms, these exploitative and massively dangerous companies grow stronger and harder to defeat. On the other hand, if the people take back social media and the internet more generally, there's a real opportunity for building a counter-movement with these technologies.

The lesson I take from this: getting people to quit the capitalist platforms and join the #Fediverse is part of political organisation, and possibly an important part if you consider the way people are tethered to their Instagram and Tiktok.

Let me repeat this: Convincing and helping comrades to quit the capitalist platforms and join the Fediverse is an important form of revolutionary political organisation. ✊

A previously unexplored globular cluster glitters with multicolored stars in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope image. Globular clusters like this one, called ESO 591-12 or Palomar 8, are spherical collections of tens of thousands to millions of stars tightly bound together by gravity. Globular clusters generally form early in the galaxies’ histories in regions rich in gas […]

There's a lot to unpack from the book, but what's really sitting with me right now is Wynn-Williams' insider perspective on what happened with Facebook in Myanmar. 🧵

It was unsurprising because we have seen this play out again and again: horrifying atrocities happening that can be traced directly back to the unchecked spread of misinformation and hate speech.

& this isn't just letting the stray oblique racist comment slide, either— this is stuff like major influential figures calling for violence, it's massive troll farms laying the groundwork for ethnic cleansing and operating with impunity. As one colleague of mine puts it, "Facebook is just like 4chan".

Internet pioneer, co-creator of the Netscape browser, and billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen says gifted Americans [i.e White people] are being shut out of top-flight careers by elite support for migrants and diversity. He also opines that there's "no chance" gifted White kids of the working and middle classes will be accepted into elite universities.

On Sunday, Israel bombed a water distribution point in the central Gaza Strip, as dozens of civilians, mostly women and children, waited in line for water. Twelve people were killed, eight of them children. It was not the first time.
