Well luckily most companies do not actually provide anything important. If a company like Google or Facebook "stops working" and simply "dead spins" in place... there is little damage caused by that. The companies will go even if no work is done there until it fails eventually. For management this isn't an issue as any failure can be attributed to "changing market conditions".
This is why long established engineering firms get their recently retired employees to come in for 5-10 days a month. Just for a brief transition period of around 10 years or so.
Everything a company values should be documented in a way that new hires can easily learn.
When a corporation talks about "values" though, they often don't include "preservation and sharing of comprehensive knowledge" as one of them.
And then they lay people off, bring in contractors, or outsource knowledge based operations, and wonder why nobody knows what's going on.
AI is going to be like that. People will only operate at the highest levels. You know, the levels where they push a button and expect everything to be automatically how they assume it should be.

One lesson I carry with me comes from the retirement years ago of an employee most would have considered "obscure." He was a quiet man arriving each morning with his sandwich, working steadily, and leaving without much fanfare. To many, he seemed part of the furniture. It was only when he left that we truly realized his value. Over the years, he had accumulated deep, almost invisible knowledge. He had taken on countless menial but essential tasks simply because he had the experience to do them well. He was, in many ways, the oil in the machine. His departure forced us to scramble. We suddenly saw how many small, critical pieces he had been holding together, pieces no job description had captured, and no system had tracked. Since then, I've often thought of him when I see organizations subjected to blind cuts. The true cost of such decisions is rarely visible on a balance sheet: it's in the loss of quiet expertise, institutional memory, and the small acts of continuity that keep complex systems running.
Now imagine #humanity as a whole: almost all of human knowledge, plus an increasing amount of AI slop, is stored in digital format (the oldest forms with the longest life, half a Century?) with the newest forms the shorter lifespan. An SSD without power can be expected to retain its data at the most a couple of years. The way it's going, it is more a matter of when, rather than if, we become extinct. A couple millenia and there won't be much left of our "Great" Civilization.
It's one of the reason that offshoring / outsourcing jobs to dramatically underskilled + underpaid resources from poorer countries has caused so much havoc in IT circles over the years.
Bosses just thought the glue people could perform total KT (knowledge transfer) by writing everything down in multiple binders.
They never realized it's the WHY that matters about an operation / process / task at least 50% more than the WHAT.

The money doesn't come from the productivity or output or generation of the business, it comes from *promises*, which investors swallow like prophecy and strawberry wine. The business is slow or clunky or ugly? Who gives a fuck; we're high on grifty speculation, you simpletons.
Many companies have already done this and many of them are now regretting it and scrambling to "fix" the slop that's been pushed to production.
within the past couple months or so I've been getting mails and messages from contacts on behalf of other clients about coming in to refactor or just straight up fix code, apps, etc that were pushed to production by AI Slop and "vibe coders". The tech debt is insane. It's gotten so bad I've been having to refer them to other devs who are looking for work.
I remember doing this a few years ago when companies were just offshoring to India but it was no where near as bad as it is now.
IT has many a tale of Project Leads who grease the wheel of progress yet get fired after every "on time, on budget" success.
On paper, they aren't seen as "productive" (fewer code commits) but they keep teams on task without creating anger, smooth over interpersonal friction, and inject realistic time management.
No death marches. No kids in rehab. No divorces. No mental or health crises. Undramatic function.
Such people are seen as disposable even while creating big revenue.
It feels like when this crash finally happens (ugh, could it hurry up and do so already?) it's going to come down HARD.
Hopefully the surviving companies will offer some very generous raises to the people they stupidly fired before because those people will deserve it to clean up the mess.
The next hype will be GlueAI. It will figure out what all of your AI systems are doing, generate code to interface between the systems, and solve all problems.

J’ai donc tendance à interpréter le bombardement israélien de ce matin comme une première intimidation: vendredi dernier 11 juillet, l’armée israélienne a demandé aux habitants des deux quartiers où se trouvent les paroisses chrétiennes de la ville de Gaza de partir. Et les chrétiens refusent d’autant plus d’obtempérer qu’ils ont accueilli des réfugiés des zones environnantes, chrétiens ou musulmans; et qu’ils ont des dizaines de malades et de personnes âgées dont s’occuper, qui ne supporteraient pas l’expulsion.

Le Service d’information du gouvernement (SIG) de Matignon a décidé de confier à une entreprise canado-américaine Talkwalker (filiale de Hootsuite contrôlée par des fonds américains) ,la mission de veille des réseaux sociaux, notamment l’analyse de l’opinion sur les réseaux sociaux. Une décision qui suscite incompréhension et inquiétude. Souveraineté, sécurité des données et cohérence stratégique sont au cœur de la polémique.
Matignon a décidé de confier la veille des réseaux sociaux des Français à la société canadienne, Talkwalker. Pourquoi un tel choix ? A priori, c’est une question de tarif. Concernant les inquiétudes sur la sécurité des données sensibles accessibles à l’entreprise, Matignon assure qu’elle sera soumise à des règlements stricts. Une entreprise étrangère pour surveiller les réseaux sociaux des Français
Cela fait 8 ans que l’entreprise française, Visibrain, assure la veille des réseaux sociaux des Français. Son contrat a pris fin et un appel d’offres a été lancé. Mais à la grande surprise de tous, Matignon a choisi de confier la mission à une entreprise canadienne connue sous le nom de Talkwalker, dont les fonds sont américains.
Evidemment, cette décision de Matignon inquiète les Français, certains fonctionnaires et les différents services de l’Etat. Pourquoi confier une mission aussi stratégique à une entreprise étrangère ? Pour mener à bien sa mission, l’entreprise canadienne aura accès à des données sensibles issues des différents services de l’Etat, y compris ceux des armées, du ministère de l’Economie et de l’agence de lutte contre les ingérences étrangères. De plus, Visibrain possède des ressources techniques plus performantes.
Le Service d’information du gouvernement (le SIG), un organe placé sous le contrôle du Premier ministre François Bayrou,semble être convaincu qu’il a fait un bon choix.
Si Talkwalker a obtenu le contrat, c’est surtout à cause de son service à bas prix. Selon Matignon, il serait trois fois moins cher, le prestataire étranger a su séduire un État en quête d’économies budgétaires. Mais à quel prix ?
Il semble que derrière cette économie apparente se cache une perte de contrôle stratégique. Le social listening – l’écoute et l’analyse des tendances sur les réseaux sociaux – est un outil de renseignement civil important, notamment pour anticiper les crises sociales, les mobilisations ou encore les campagnes de désinformation. Confier cette fonction à une entreprise étrangère soulève inévitablement la question : peut-on externaliser la perception de l’opinion nationale à des acteurs étrangers, soumis à d’autres intérêts ? Des données sensibles sous pavillon américain
Le SIG tente de rassurer : les données exploitées sont « publiques », le contrat est « juridiquement en règle », et l’entreprise est « soumise aux règles européennes de protection des données ». Pourtant, ce discours se heurte à une réalité juridique préoccupante : le Cloud Act américain, voté en 2018.
Ce texte autorise le gouvernement des États-Unis à exiger d’une entreprise américaine – ou d’une filiale contrôlée par des capitaux américains – la transmission de ses données, y compris si celles-ci sont stockées à l’étranger. Autrement dit, les données publiques collectées par Talkwalker pour le compte de l’État français pourraient, légalement, être réclamées par Washington.
Par ailleurs, Talkwalker, le prestataire retenu, ne serait pas encore capable de surveiller TikTok, pourtant expressément mentionné dans l’appel d’offres. Or TikTok est aujourd’hui un canal central de diffusion d’opinions, de mobilisation politique et parfois accusé de « désinformation », notamment chez les jeunes. Visibrain, de son côté, le faisait déjà.
La France ne cesse de proclamer sa volonté de renforcer sa souveraineté numérique, de relocaliser ses données, de créer un cloud national, de contrer les influences étrangères… Mais dans les actes, elle choisit une entreprise étrangère pour écouter ses propres citoyens.
