IMO the most rational way to improve transportation in the US is to just make flying less of a hassle. If the carbon emissions of aircraft really bothers you, just plant some trees. I highly doubt that any carbon is ever saved by doing something less cost-efficiently anyway...
@cjd I wouldn't change the US rail freight system much though, it's really efficient and to be honest, I'd like to see so much cargo transported on rail in Europe, I think only in Switzerland the cargo percentage is nearing the one in the US and they have a lot of incentives to avoid trucking even if truck is a norm for that kind of cargo anywhere else (even big-box stores have sometime railway siding as a main delivery route).

@cjd I am not 100% sure, but I think that LGV network is, at least in maintenance etc., financed by the operator fees only. And TGV services costs are 100% covered by the fare, I think it even brings profit. So for the time being, it's actually economical too, just state owned (not ideal, but taxpayer is fine).

@cjd Well, yeah, but you spent a shit tonne of money for motorways and the results are… well, not the best really. And frankly, the way American cities are built is by any means financially viable for the taxpayer. High sprawl levels mean that the infrastructure is used inefficiently – you still need to get the pipes, roads etc., but they are used for smaller number of businesses per length measure etc. If the same pipe and the same road could handle a 4-storey apartment building with a shop in the ground level, if you just use it for a single-story building with a parking lot, the tax burden needs to be much higher. And with less sprawled city, any public (public as in used by many people at once, it doesn't really have to be state-owned, even if it's often is, and it doesn't have to be mostly funded by the taxpayer – actually, there is a correlation with the density and PT self-financing and if you add some real estate portfolio of the transport company (a model very popular e.g. in Japan or HK or Far Eastern Asia as a whole) it can be nicely profitable) transport will be used more often.
It's BTW basically what the whole Strong Towns (strongtowns.org/) initiative is all about.

I feel that I am reaching a personal limit of my making any attempt to get my head around the inaction by governments as Gaza is flattened and the Palestinian people murdered in their tens of thousands. @Kellys We certainly need something, but Corbyn was very much against Scottish independence when he was Labour leader. Of course, he probably knew nothing about Scotland so just went along with what his advisers told him to say. In my many decades long career I have met many people who are unable and will remain unable to function in society. These people are extremely dangerous. Barely trainable animals. They come in all colors, sizes and shapes. Not all nightmares are locked away in cells. Many walk free. Some in my neighborhood and some in your neighborhood. You see them nightly in the local news.
Example: I call him the Mojo Man. He tried to burn up eight people at home and succeeded in destroying their home and all their possessions. WHY? Because a juvenile female would not talk to him at three in the morning. He did a couple years and released. He has been arrested and charged with violent crimes three times just this year. He is at the mental hospital every few months, off his meds and on a coroner's PC for 72 hrs. A good dose of Haldol injectable a bottle of Seroquel and Cogentin and off he goes. Booked in to the local jail until OR'ed out.
On meds he is a quiet zombie, off his meds a crazed murderous maniac. He has no soul. Just a walking crazed corpse that don't know it is dead yet. This is the best he can expect, forever.
They are always classed as mentally ill and so never do significant time in prison. Released to maime, rape, and slay. Wash, rinse, repeat. There is nothing humane about allowing them to walk free. There might be a time to consider euthanasia, however, I would not want that decision to make.
Once... Prison was a break for society from the criminal. Prison was a punishment for the guilty.
Now... Prison is a bus stop to the next victim. Three meals a day, satellite TV, gyms, free healthcare, breakfast in bed and laundry service. The neighbors suck though. 🙄
