A slow day today. Worked too hard in the heat yesterday and got a bit overheated (again). Guess I have not learned my lesson yet. Need a day to fully recover before any outdoor work. The old geezers sometimes get caught up in finishing the job rather than stopping early because of the heat.

Another Vireo for the morning. This was a tough one. I had to ask one of the main Audubon folks (Terry) for help with the ID and verification. Luckily we have several that are quite active and willing to help. An infrequent visitor, this is a Philadelphia Vireo. The short tail and call are the give-away.

Not engaging much with the political filth, garbage, muck, slime, putrescence ... for my own sanity these days.

A smaller vireo with a dark top of head, distinct eye bar, yellowish throat and white chest. The tail is very short. Had to have help with this ID. A Philadelphia Vireo. They migrate through our area primarily in spring.

Taxation is obscene, you lose about 50% of your income.

The good side is nobody wants to kill you, imprison you, and ruin your life. So no cops with quotas, no SWATting (they just don't kick down doors over anonymous phone calls, actually kicking down doors AT ALL is extremely rare), no personal injury lawyers, no toxic food.

The bad side is that nobody wants to do anything, so when you need something done, it can be really painful. Like if you're paying someone and they still don't want to work.

It's not just "lazy" in the sense that an American would think of it, it's a whole culture unto itself.

The French don't grovel. Everybody knows that whatever they're paid half is going out the window, so as a result, customer service is hilarious. But if they can see that you're in a tight spot, they'll help you out, because they do care about you as a human being. It's just that whether or not you're paying them doesn't really have an impact on how much they want to help you out.

The French wear you down, until you become one of them...

Another thing about the French is they are experts at not following rules. The French are absolute masters at implicitly negotiating with one another what is and is not an acceptable thing to be doing, with astonishingly little regard for the letter of the law.

America has nothing comparable to this, America has mostly the German concept of enforcing every stupid little rule to the full extent possible, with no regard for the lives of everyone around, or indeed even the reason the rule was implemented in the first place. America also has the Scotts-Irish Borderer concept of breaking every rule possible, and starting a fight with anyone who suggests otherwise, but there's no analogue to the French concept of gracefully breaking the letter of the law while remaining within the spirit and being a good neighbor.

There are different ways to do it. If you're marrying, you can marry a woman from any country in the EU, I recommend looking in Romania.

There are also other ways to get residency. There might even be a special thing for digital nomads now, IDK.

Never been to SEA but it always gave me a weird "cool for vacation, but not to live" vibe, but I guess it works for some people...

This completely insane way of paying for things means that the contract says that they pay the full cost of manufacturing plus a fixed percentage on top.

What this of course leads to is that the manufacturer is incentivised to make the cost as high as possible.

There is no such thing as a "loneliness" epidemic. There's neoliberalism, and 10% of Western populations who refuse to catch SARS2 over and over again. These are two different issues, tho interrelated.

The "loneliness" epidemic you've read about is the political class applying pressure to people who refuse to catch their favorite plague.

Individualism, a part of neoliberalism's cultural revolution in the 1980s, purposefully replaced community with "enlightened self-interest."

Most of the COVID competent people I'm aware of are *deeply* involved in community efforts, either online or sometimes in person (in safe environments). They aren't lonely, they're angry and unwilling to comply in advance.

This would vex neoliberals and all the well-meaning people who advance their agendas, like erasing the consequences of getting COVID so people would go back to work and keep making the ruling class their filthy lucre.

After all, what use is someone they can't gaslight?

@ferricoxide For a long time my boxes were mostly second hand very expensive kit - mostly Dell because HP were arseholes about access to stuff without contracts. However I generally went with the top end "workstation" stuff as it was engineered for a 10K+ budget a machine CAD user so a lot quieter. You just threw the once top end epic and now completely comical graphic card and disks out, replaced them and added more cheap RAM (because nobody wanted registered RAM0

A ton of things were updated in jobcomm

obcommunity repository is having issues


While rebuilding/updating some jobcomm pkgs freerdp2 was called as a makedependency and it only comes from obcommunity or from extra/ but asks for systemd
It appears as some gpg certificate has expired for the obcommunity builder and its packages being signed fail validity check. We built our own version of the pkg without systemd but in case you encounter another problem with obcommunity pkgs let us know and we will try to accomodate the need.

This is an ongoing obarun problem for the past 8 years, and it can only get worse as the packager bots seem to have grown in number and it is always too late they are renewed.
We opted not to sign packages, even if the builder is a single entity because we encourage people to build their own and replace binaries.
