Welp. Time to get three cavities filled at the dentist. Even the office is twitchy about it because I guess I'm marked as difficult on their file. The thing is once my mouth is numb, everything is fine. The problem is I'm terrified of needles and it seems impossible for me to hide that fact so it becomes a whole ordeal. They have a newer dentist who is a very nice lady, but last time she sent me home because "I can't do this when you look like that I need your consent." Um. Lady. We're not having sex. Needles in your mouth sucks. You just gotta not care about me. We both know that I'm not going to die. I just have a problem with needles.

Alas, next time they sent in their more experienced old man dentist who does not care about me at all and all things considered it was rather swift.

@FeartnTiredNasty. I had a couple out from over crowding when in primary school.

It might be worth your while asking your mum if she had any vitamin deficiency in pregnancy too, and speak to the dentist or the Dr...mind you, not sure how it all works over there...and ask them if you need to have a check re why this happens to you.

Good Morning MINDS
Happy Friday....here's my 5:

I just want to make fun of politics. I am done being serious about it. I don't care anymore. There have been no significant arrests. I just don't care.

I wish someone would make the ultimate social media platform. Complete with blogging and the ability to reach all who follow you, not just a select few.

You would think that News stations would go back to the Walter Cronkite days. Just deliver the News Headlines and some facts and let the viewer make their own decisions. Their viewership would go through the roof.

If today's music was so good, why do they keep using the Rock classics in commercials?

There is beer and Pizza at the end of my rainbow today.

Trump’s Agenda Could End America’s Education Crisis

thegatewaypundit.com/2025/07/t…

Misplaced hope #1: Most court rulings halting Trump's authoritarianism are based on his having usurped Congressional authority. But a MAGA Supreme Court is reversing those rulings, approving his power grab. And a MAGA Congress is happy to hand over their power to him anyway.

Misplaced hope #2: MAGA's declining popularity means voters will rein them in? That assumes they'll allow free elections. To doubt this is no longer absurdly alarmist or just a matter for grim jokes: publicnotice.co/p/trump-coup-a…

Newsom Sues Trump Admin For Canceling Funding For California’s Failed $130 Billion High Speed Train to Nowhere

Kevin MacDonald (born January 24, 1944) is a professor of psychology at California State University, Long Beach, best known for his use of evolutionary psychology to inform his study of the development of Jewish population as a "group evolutionary strategy." As part of this, MacDonald theorizes that Jewish features of higher-than-average verbal intelligence and ethnocentrism have eugenically evolved to enhance the ability of Jews to out-compete non-Jews for resources, resulting in their ability to undermine the power and self-confidence of the White majorities in Europe and America.

If you need some joy in your day, this is my gift to you. Jon Batiste is a gem of a human being. He is also massively talented.

In this interview from 2023 with Chris Wallace, Jon talks about the limitations genres put on music. And THEN he genre hops through part of a Beethoven piece on the fly.

It’s so good. And Chris’ face is priceless. He’s almost giddy.

Taxation is obscene, you lose about 50% of your income.

The good side is nobody wants to kill you, imprison you, and ruin your life. So no cops with quotas, no SWATting (they just don't kick down doors over anonymous phone calls, actually kicking down doors AT ALL is extremely rare), no personal injury lawyers, no toxic food.

The bad side is that nobody wants to do anything, so when you need something done, it can be really painful. Like if you're paying someone and they still don't want to work.

It's not just "lazy" in the sense that an American would think of it, it's a whole culture unto itself.

The French don't grovel. Everybody knows that whatever they're paid half is going out the window, so as a result, customer service is hilarious. But if they can see that you're in a tight spot, they'll help you out, because they do care about you as a human being. It's just that whether or not you're paying them doesn't really have an impact on how much they want to help you out.

The French wear you down, until you become one of them...

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

Another thing about the French is they are experts at not following rules. The French are absolute masters at implicitly negotiating with one another what is and is not an acceptable thing to be doing, with astonishingly little regard for the letter of the law.

America has nothing comparable to this, America has mostly the German concept of enforcing every stupid little rule to the full extent possible, with no regard for the lives of everyone around, or indeed even the reason the rule was implemented in the first place. America also has the Scotts-Irish Borderer concept of breaking every rule possible, and starting a fight with anyone who suggests otherwise, but there's no analogue to the French concept of gracefully breaking the letter of the law while remaining within the spirit and being a good neighbor.

There are different ways to do it. If you're marrying, you can marry a woman from any country in the EU, I recommend looking in Romania.

There are also other ways to get residency. There might even be a special thing for digital nomads now, IDK.

Never been to SEA but it always gave me a weird "cool for vacation, but not to live" vibe, but I guess it works for some people...

Read again about how NASA used to do cost-plus deals for rocket building with boeing, lockheed, etc.

This completely insane way of paying for things means that the contract says that they pay the full cost of manufacturing plus a fixed percentage on top.

What this of course leads to is that the manufacturer is incentivised to make the cost as high as possible.

nope, posts will not be deleted. In any case, it is a good practice to autodelete your posts (mine are deleted after some months). Microbloging social media are ephemeral. If you want an archive, create a proper blog. There are also settings to keep any of them in your preferences.

This is the kind of preachy and hectoring response that puts people off!

And it does not even address the point of discussion; it is just you feeling smug about your own decision to auto-delete your own posts, and showing contempt for the people who do not.

The point of my posts was to show that moving to a different instance may not solve the problems @{rzeta0@todon.eu} was facing on mastodon.social, and may even create new problems.

Posts not getting transferred when you move accounts is a design flaw of Mastodon, whether or not they are set to auto-delete; and the reluctance of Mastodon evangelists like you to even acknowledge the problem is harmful to Mastodon itself.

And that’s only one of the problems of Mastodon, and of ActivityPub as a whole.

Here are some others:

  • A profile redirect, that you and many others are tomtoming about, is still at the mercy of the administrator of the current instance. A malicious admin can simply block it.
  • There is no way out for a user if the current instance shuts down.

In this context, the irony is that Mike Macgirvin’s Nomad protocol existed and was being used in production before ActivityPub was released, and before Mastodon was even born. The Nomad protocol allows each account to have multiple channels, the channel is what participates on the Fediverse. But here’s the feature relevant to our discussion: a user can open an account on another Nomad-protocol-based instance and can clone the channel from the original instance there. You can choose to post from the original channel or the clone channel, the post gets mirrored on the other one. Connections are also identical on both. So essentially a channel and its one or more clones exist simultaneously. If one of the instance shuts down or bans the user, all the posts and connections and blogs and everything else on the channel are still there on the clone, and the channel can continue functioning as it always did.

The above feature is called nomadic identity.

ActivityPub chose NOT to incorporate Nomadic Identity in its original implementation. But recently, Mike Macgirvin even ported nomadic identity to ActivityPub.

Those who are so keen to dish out advice about moving to another instance should at least spend some time learning about nomadic identity, and checking out Fedi software that supports nomadic identity [Hubzilla, (streams), Forte].

  • But even if some of the fedi software has nomadic identity, the entire fediverse has the major problem of search being entirely local. An instance (call it instance 1) becomes aware of a post on another instance only if someone on the instance 1 follows the poster, or boosts or likes the post. This effectively invisiblizes the global south, and also invisiblizes the low-visibility topics even from the global north. In other words, most of the fediverse remains invisible to most of the fediverse, by design.

@baskin :kafeneio:🇵🇸, you have a Palestinian flag in your profile, so I assume the ongoing holocaust of Palestinians enrages you as much as it enrages me and @{rzeta0@todon.eu} and many other people. And I presume you also care about the fediverse. In that case, try to understand the drawbacks of the fedi, accept them, and organize and agitate for it to be better.

At present, the dominant force on the Fediverse is a tiny liberal Western elite virtue-signalling to each other. The Fedi is entirely irrelevant in the larger sociopolitical context. If you care about the fedi, try to make it a catalyst for genuine sociopolitical change in the world out there.
