On July 17, 2025, the Russian State Duma passed a new law (Article 13.53) that makes it illegal to deliberately search for or access online content listed in the official Federal List of Extremist Materials, which includes Pussy Riot audiovisuals from their actions. Pussy Riot’s inclusion in this law demonstrates how artistic and political protest is equated with extremism.

Today in Labor History July 18, 1934: “The American Mercury” accepted Emma Goldman's article, "Communism: Bolshevist & Anarchist, A Comparison.” However, it was not until a year later that it was published, in a truncated form, as "There is No Communism in Russia." Goldman had been deported by the U.S. in 1919, during the Palmer raids, and sent to Russia, where she lived with her comrade, Alexander Berkman, for several years. She was initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, until Trotsky brutally crushed the Kronstadt rebellion, in 1921, slaughtering over 1,000 sailors and then executing over a thousand more. After this, she left the USSR and, in 1923, published a book about her experiences, “My Disillusionment in Russia.” H.L. Menken founded “The American Mercury,” in 1924, and published radical writers throughout the 1920s and ‘30s. A change of ownership in the 1940s led to a shift to the far right, including virulently antisemitic articles.

So the poll ended and I forgot to talk about it.

1462 responses.

57% KDE Plasma.
43% GNOME.

I chuckle when I compare that against the hundreds of comments I get about how "everyone hates GNOME" every time I show it.

I chuckle because apparently a lot of you would use it if it were one of only two options.

"The three liberals agree on an overarching theme: They no longer see the Court playing by the old game of constitutional law. Their dissents suggest anything but an assumption of business as usual. The three liberal justices are writing about a majority unbound by law and its tiresome technicalities—about a majority that is no longer doing law as that term has come to be understood."

Elie Mystal says that in giving Trump the power to decimate the Department of Education, the Supremes have once again crowned him king:

"That is not the power of a president, it’s the power of a dictator. More than granting Trump immunity, more than anything else this court has done, this ruling gives him the powers of a king."

"And the Republicans on the court did this while they were on vacation, in an emergency-docket ruling that didn’t even require them to explain themselves.

The Supreme Court is of no more use. It will not protect democracy, the rule of law, or even the constitutional order. The next Democratic president should use the powers granted to Trump to impound the court."

"These forces, wealthy, secretive, and politically connected, have spent decades quietly embedding their ideology into American institutions.

Their goal is nothing short of a return to a feudalistic model of governance: hierarchy, submission, and clerical control. They speak of 'natural law' and 'order' but act out of ambition, not mercy."

in reply to William Lindsey

The history that people concerned about the Supreme Court's destruction of democracy — destruction driven by theocratic ideas — need to know is the following:

When civil rights legislation was enacted by the Democrats in the 1960s, white evangelicals kicked and screamed. At this point, the US Catholic bishops allied themselves with white evangelicals.

in reply to William Lindsey

That alliance has had fateful and lasting consequences. It led first to the formation of the Religious Right and eventually to MAGA and white Christian nationalism.

To make the Religious Right's crusade against the Democrats and human rights appear more morally acceptable than it was when it was born out of racism, the Catholic bishops focused on abortion.

in reply to William Lindsey

White evangelicals, who had never said a peep about the abortion issue and couldn't care less about it, became gung-ho in the anti-abortion cause, with the U.S. Catholic bishops quietly engineering this response behind the scenes — and assisting Leonard Leo in the stacking the Supreme Court with hard-right Opus Dei-leaning Catholics.

in reply to William Lindsey

The media have focused largely on white evangelicals as the big force intent on replacing democracy with theocracy, but behind the scenes, the U.S. Catholic bishops, who have done everything they can to make it appear their hands are not dirty, have pulled the strings, using white evangelicals while avoiding media scrutiny.

in reply to William Lindsey

The resistance to breakthroughs in recognizing the rights of minority communities that began with civil rights legislation according rights to people of color has expanded to bitter resistance among both evangelicals and the U.S. Catholic bishops to rights for women and LGBTQ people. This resistance is at the heart of the determination to dismantle democracy.

The babies are up and galloping. Today's fun is leaping onto a footstool then leaping off it, pushing it further around the room each time. They rushed past Supervisor earlier, excited by the thought of brekky. She boofed up her tail, startled and has now retired to the safety of the bed.

I have to go into the office today, hopefully no tufts of fur on the floor when I get home.

in reply to Frank

Got home from work and sat with my tabby friend on the couch for a cuddle time. Supervisor giving me evil eye from the cat post because she feels if I am home, regardless of time, it's now dinner time. It was not quite dinner time so I had a sit.

Now they've all had dinner and the kittens are filled with joy and energy and are back to the mad sprints and chasey. From the dent in my bed I'd say Supervisor spent most of her day there.

Lefty Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was among those to help fuel an alleged hoax that claimed ICE had kidnapped an illegal immigrant mom and then tried to force her to self-deport.

Bass spread the claims in a newly resurfaced social media post — just weeks before the migrant, Yuriana Julia “Juli” Pelaez Calderon, was accused of staging the abduction as part of an elaborate scam.

@arrrg I can see what you mean about the ratio, but the focus should be on actions being terrible, rather than who they’re done to. It doesn’t save anyone there to add victims anywhere else.

I’m sure you know this and I wouldn’t even speak to it, except there is a thread of thought rn among mostly young folks that if “we” (really, the more-vulnerable closer to home) just suffer enough from our own rulers, we’ll finally be moved to stop them, and it smells like accelerationism.
