It's about making sure you know what is inside the flatpaks. If you make your own set of flatpaks, you can distribute them with the OS. It's not that fedora flatpaks aren't distro-agnostic, you can use them on any distro. They just want a set where they can verify the build process and trust.

I think, because of Fedoras atomic desktops. I didn't use any of them yet, but it seems like Flatpaks should be used there, since one should (or can?) not install tradional packages there. Therefore Fedora provides the flatpaks anyway and they can be used on the non atomic desktops as well.
Another reason is, that you might not be able to install the latest version of an application as rpm package if a required dependency in the repo is outdated. A Flatpak usually does not have the issue since a newer version would include the fitting runtime. This said, I do think its not this big of an issue for fedora which is usually quite up to date. But if you run a distribution with LTS releases or something like Debian you will much more likely have older dependencies in your repositiry.
i guess it makes sense in that case, but i'm really not convinced flatpaks should be used as the default (or only, apparently) way to install every application in the system. flatpak's flexibility is great for the particular cases where you want to install newer versions of applications or if an application isn't available in the official repos somehow. besides that, just use distro packages

I'm considering replacing the register machine I wrote with an evaluator graph as a convenience for polyphony, but this would also open up the possibility of live editing patches. My register machine allows for no flow control, and each operation has at most two inputs and exactly one output. This is geometrically very convenient, so I'm thinking maybe something grid based to hopefully keep it simple.
I'm thinking something like this for the visual language frontend. The nodes are grid aligned with space between for connections to run. Placing a new node in that space would insert a new row or column into the grid. Wire paths will probably be automatic, and the whole thing would ideally have a deterministic textual representation to make revision control easier.
Also important: graph cycles are allowed. If there's a feedback loop, the value is pulled from the previous frame's computation or is zero if there is no previous frame.
Commutative instructions get to be variadic. I'm not sure what to do about non-commutative instructions syntaxwise. I'll probably have it make you select which parameter your connecting when you draw a connection, and then display information about the connection when you touch wires, and draw the name along the wire where possible. Color coding and ordering where the inputs connect also would make sense to supplement that.
I'm really tempted to just not have division or subtraction, and provide rcp and sign flip as instructions instead. Likewise who needs clamp when you've got min(max(v, low_bound), high_bound), right? I think I'd want lerp and some other functions that don't really fit this syntax well though so idk I'll have to think about that.
One of the fun things about designing a visual programming language is "how can I put less work making this" and "what if it wasn't super annoying" can coincide on the same solutions! Like what if instead of trying to drag and drop a noodle between two nodes on opposite sides of the world, what if you just select both and enter noodle mode that temporarily puts them side by side so you can draw the connections you want.
playing around with the rules for automatic wire placement tonight and i got a marvelous idea. normally i'd want to avoid parallel runs of wires when it improves readability to do so, but the exception to this rule is if the destination is the same then its better to consolidate. here's a mock up
1. groups of wires that all connect to the same parameter on one node are evaluated to see if a wire wrap path makes sense. if so, these are placed first, and the cost of the path is raised arbitrarily high for other wires.
2. wires that travel the farthest go second and search for the shortest path with the fewest bends
3. wires that have the shortest path go last, avoid parallel runs, but favor perpendicular crossings
ideally things will be color coded by destination and wires will have different colors and textures to make it easier to tell them apart, as well as UV animation. Also highlighting / isolating connections when you select things.
another thing I want is a mode for isolating parts of the patch. stuff like selecting a node and having it highlight it's connections is common place, but I'd also like to have a mode for isolating the entire expression tree that roots on that node. dunno if anything does that.
also I am delighted that people keep thinking of examples of games instead of other visual programming languages in response to this thread. it's one of the ways I know I'm on the golden path.
I put it to the test by translating my test patch from my python fronted to a hypothetical equivalent node based representation without regard for wire placement and then stepped through my wire placement rules by hand. I'm very pleased with the results, it's a lot clearer to me what it does than the python version is at a glance.
I made some forward progress on my visual programming language project. Mind you, not any progress on the actual language yet, but I've established a makeshift gui quasi-framework that will hopefully make it easier to write the editor gui
The "framework" works such that there's some global state for the working data and theme elements, and there's a set of "screens" which are responsible for implementing drawing the gui and processing input events. Similar screens (as demonstrated here) share a base class to reduce code duplication. Each screen has its own event loop, and so the call stack essentially becomes an implicit stack of UI mode changes that can be unwound.
The side bar consists of "targets" which are just hyper link boxes that trigger screen changes on mouse-down. There's no mouse-over logic anymore since this meant for a touch screen anyway, and removing mouse-over button appearance changes simplifies things a bit. Each screen just define what it wants in the sidebar.
Select mode tests to see if a mouse-down happened on any boxes in the graph bay, and toggles their select state. The toggle function implements all the select and deselect logic. When select mode is active, the graph bay tiles check their select state to see which sprite they should use. When a toggle is issued, the select mode also rewrites its sidebar based on what you have selected. The "magic" button that appears will eventually go to the wire connection mode, but that doesn't exist yet.
This version of connection mode is just a short term solution for managing parameter connections. I'm going to have it work such that the different sides of the screen correspond to one of the two selected nodes, but I think later on when I get all the other parts in place I'll probably rip it out and replace it with something else.
ok I'm at the point where I need to establish a base class representing the synthesizer instructions, which in this thread I've been calling "nodes" but I want to stop calling them "nodes" because the word "node" makes me think of pimples but they're full of javascript instead which is worse. I don't want to call them "instructions" because I'm going to be writing that word over and over and also because the nodes can represent registers and constants too. (there is no js in this project)
an aside on naming things: I tend to substitute the word "user" with the word "player" or "operator" depending on context. So like, if I'm writing documentation on a tool I wrote, odds are I'm going to call you The Operator instead of "user" because I want you to feel cool.
in this particular project, I'm tempted to use the word "musician" instead, but I'm probably going to default to "player" for the person operating and programming the machine.
Getting to the fun part. There are now different types of tiles, and they can be programmatically connected. Tile positions are explicit. The wire positions are implicit, but I haven't implemented the procgen rules for them yet so they're just shortest path lines right now.
I implemented this part today because I realize that working out the data structures stuff here was a prerequisite to being able to complete the connection editing screen. Lots of options for where to go from here.
Incremental progress tonight while waiting for dinner. I've updated connect mode to now show the parameters of the selected items, as well as which side corresponds to which selected tile. Still lots of room for improvement.
I'm planning on having little detached wires hanging off of the outputs to hint at their polarity when they're disconnected. When they're connected my intention is to have an arrow indicating the directionality of the connection.
Also I'm annoyed that math words are all verbose. "term" and "sum" fit as alternatives for the inputs and outputs of the add node, but the vibes are off. "result" reads better than "sum" for the output. I don't like "term" because it's ambiguous. "summand" is too long. "addend" both is too long and it looks like it says "add end" which what. In the end I went with "+" for the operand end of the tile and "=" for the result end. (operand is also too long)
also I'm considering making the add tile effectively just a pass through and having the system add all wires connecting to the same input when the input doesn't have a special arithmetic meaning. eg draw two wires to the line out and it just adds them. or draw two hz values into a sine wave and it adds them. draw two values into a mul tile and it multiplies them instead.
The connect mode is fully functional now, and because I felt it added too much overhead, I also added a magic auto-connect/disconnect function to the selection mode since most pairs of tiles will have one obvious implicit connection anyway.
I figured maybe I'd have a go at porting over my synth pipeline tonight, but I also decided I wanted to rebuild it as a python C++ extension and then my attention span bounced violently off the python packaging documentation, soooo... I made the lines look more arrow-dynamic instead :3
Big progress today! I rewrote a bunch of stuff and now the program has exactly the same functionality as it did yesterday, except that some of it is written in C++ now instead of python 😎
Now the tile objects are C++ classes that python thinks are python classes, instead of just being python classes. This will allow me to rebuild the C++ audio synthesis pipeline to use the tile graph directly instead of my earlier interpreter, and the tile graph will be constructed and manipulated by python.
The next main things to do are building out an audio subsystem for the program so you can hear the patch, and then there's some important stuff missing from the editor like being able to place new tiles.
One of the things I'm really excited about with the design of the compiler is if you modify a patch while it is running, the oscillators don't reset, so you should be able to make a program while performing it :3
the screen shot doesn't show off how cool this is, because when you're using this to edit constants in the patch, it'll update their values as you input expressions (so, every time you press equals or input a second operator) and so you can hear the change to the patch as you are doing math
I've got this hooked up to my audio convolver (a simple slow morphing fm patch convolved with the sound of a metal water bottle with a little bit of water in it being perturbed) and it sounds mesmerizing. Mym described it as "birds in a pinball machine" :3
The natural thing to implement next would be save and load, but pygame doesn't provide anything for conjuring the system file io dialogue windows (SDL3 has it, but pygame is SDL2 under the hood iirc). I'll worry about that another time I guess.
I'm probably going to go with an xml format so it's easy to extend. I want it to be easy to make custom controls in other applications eg game engines, so this feels like the obvious choice also I'm one of the five people who likes xml.
i'll probably end up adding envelope generators and midi before i implement save and load since it's not really worth using without those but it really depends on which way the wind is blowing when i next work on this
I'm really excited because all of the hard stuff is done now. I mean none of it was hard to implement or design, it's just that I made a bunch of architectural decisions up front and five weeks later the result is a thing that 1) works, 2) I've managed to keep the complexity of implementation pretty low across the entire program, and 3) all of the missing features and areas I want to improve upon have obvious paths to implementation.
and so further effort put into developing this will have an extremely favorable ration of time spent actually making the program more useful vs wallowing in tech debt
from my experimentation so far since I got all this working end-to-end, I think modality worked as useful convenience for standing up a visual programming language quickly, but it adds too much friction to this one. In particular when making patches I want to be able to alternate between placing/moving stuff around and connecting stuff, so those two modes need to be merged for sure.
I'm not really making good use of multitouch because I've been developing this using a mouse. I'd like to have it so I can touch two things to hear what they sound like connected or disconnected; and then double tap to connect or disconnect that connection when a quick connection is possible. Mouse mode will need to work differently.
Another verb I would like to implement is the ability to disconnect a wire and connect a new wire in the same frame. The current flow for disconnecting a wire and connecting a new wire is too long even with a touch screen, but I think anything where it is not one action would be.
Being able to suspend/resume updating the patch that is playing while making edits is also a thing I want to implement for similar reasons, but I think being able to splice parts quickly is useful in different ways.

it'll be a bit of work to do, but I want to eventually add a convolution verb to my synthesizer so I don't have to run it as a separate program. I'll probably also end up rewriting it to be a FFT because it would be nice to be able to have longer samples and maybe run several convolutions simultaneously. That might be "get a better computer" territory though.
I had this really great ambinet patch going where it was these washes of noise convolved with a short clip from the chrono cross chronopolis bgm, and I recorded 3 minutes of it but audacity just totally mangled it. There's this part that sounded like a storm rumbling in the distance but it was just the patch clipping, and that seems to be the danger zone for recording and playback I guess.

I've been very careful so far to make it impossible to construct an invalid program, but I'm eventually going to add a reciprocal instruction (1/x), and was pondering what to do about the (1/0) case and I had a great idea which is instead of emitting infinity or crashing, what if it just started playing a sound sample as an easter egg. I'd have to add another register to the instruction to track the progress through the sample though.
I haven't picked out a good sample yet for the (1/0) case. A farting sound is too obvious and puerile. The most hilarious idea would be to start playing a Beatles song on the theory that if you messed up the copyright autotrolls would kill your stream, but I don't want the RIAA coming after my ass.

I'm thinking of adding a tile type that could be used to construct sequences. It would take an input for its reset value, a clock input, and an input for its update value. It outputs the reset value until the clock goes from low to high, at which point it copies the current update value to its output. This would let you build stuff like repeating note sequences with two tiles per note + a shared clock source, and you could use flipflops to switch out sections.
I made a crappy oscilloscope for debugging. Every frame it draws a new line for the magnitude of the sample corresponding to that frame. This does not show the wave form accurately because it's just whatever the main thread happens to get when it polls for the latest sample. This is mostly meant to help check the magnitude to verify that it matches expectations. A red line indicates clipping happened.
And here's what an eccentric patch looks like in scope view. I'm using the RNG node as if it were an oscillator, but I didn't try to correct the range, so the samples are all positive. Also it clips like crazy. Anyways here's 3 minutes and 29 seconds of hard static to relax and study to.
I reworked the oscilloscope so that it now shows the range of samples in the time frame between refreshes. Here's a short video fo me playing around with inaudible low frequency oscillators. Also, I added a "scope" tile which you can use to snoop on specific tile outputs in place of the final output. I'm planing on eventually having it show the output over the regular background when connected so you don't have to switch modes to see it.
The scope line is sometimes a bit chonky because it's time synced, and recording causes it to lag a bit. It generally looks a bit better than in the video normally.

one of the things I think is neat about programming is the way fundamental design decisions of the programming languages you use inevitably express themselves in the software you write. for javasscript it's NaN poisoning bugs. for c++, it's "bonus data". unreal blueprints have excessive horizontal scrolling on a good day. blender geometry nodes evolve into beautiful deep sea creatures. as I've experimented with mollytime, I've noticed it has a wonderful tendency to summon friendly demons
I have all these big plans for using procgen to do wire management ( mastodon.gamedev.place/@aeva/1… ) that I still intend on implementing eventually, but I'm finding their absence unexpectedly charming at the moment
I put it to the test by translating my test patch from my python fronted to a hypothetical equivalent node based representation without regard for wire placement and then stepped through my wire placement rules by hand. I'm very pleased with the results, it's a lot clearer to me what it does than the python version is at a glance.
I whipped up a version of the doof-and-boop patch that automates the alternating connections with a pile of flip flops and I've been grooving out to it for the last two hours 😎
I tried doing a live jam for some friends tonight where I had the drum machine patch going along with a simple synth voice on top of that which I intended to drive with the midi touch screen keyboard I made back in January, but I quickly found that to be unplayable due to latency in the system. I'm not sure exactly where as I haven't attempted to measure yet.
I figure if I move the touch screen keyboard into the synth and cut out the trip through the midi subsystem that might make the situation a little better (again, depending on where the real problem is)
Anyways, it got me thinking, I think processing input events synchronously with rendering might be a mistake, and it would be better if I could process input events on the thread where I'm generating the audio.
I added an instruction called "boop" that implements a momentary switch, and built a small piano out of it, and also built a metronome in the patch. That is very playable, so the latency must have been something to do with having one program implement the midi controller and the other implement the synth. I think I had this same problem with timidity a while back, so maybe it's just linux not being designed for this sort of thing.
with one program being the midi controller and the synthesizer it's pretty playable, but sometimes touch events seem to get dropped or delayed. that is probably my fault though, there's a lot of quick and dirty python code in that path, though I'm not sure why it's only occasional hitches
k, I've got tracy partially hooked up to mollytime (my synthesizer), and with mollytime running stand-alone playing the drum machine patch (low-ish program complexity), the audio thread (which repeatedly evaluates the patch directly when buffering), the audio thread wakes up every 3 milliseconds, and the repeated patch invocations take about ~0.5 milliseconds to run, with most patch evals taking about 3 microseconds each.
almost a third of each patch invocation is asking the also if there's any new midi events despite there being no midi devices connected to mollytime, but that's a smidge under a microsecond of time wasted per eval, and it's not yet adding up enough for me to care so whatever
anyways, everything so far is pointing toward the problem being in the UI frontend I wrote, which is great, because that can be solved by simply writing better code probably unless the problem is like a pygame limitation or something
I switched pygame from initializing everything by default like they recommend to just initializing the two modules I actually need (display and font) and the audio thread time dropped, probably because now it's not contending with the unused pulse audio worker thread pygame spun up. The typical patch sample eval is about 1.5 microseconds now, and a full batch is now under a millisecond.
using cmake is a bridge too far, so I figure I'll just mimic what the bindings do, but it turns out they're a bit over engineered as they're meant to adapt C++ RAII semantics to python decorators and I don't want to pay for the overhead for that when I could just have a begin and end function call to bind instead. that probably will have to be wrapping new and delete like they do though because there is no straight forward C call for this.
The relevant C APIs are provided as a pile of macros that declare static variables that track the context information for the begin and end regions. This seems to be on the theory that you would never ever ever want to wrap these in a function for the sake of letting another language use them in a general purpose way. The inner functions they call are all prefixed with three underscores, which is basically the programmer way of saying "trespassers will be shot without hesitation or question"
also there's this cute note in the docs saying that if use the C API it'll enable some kind of expensive validation step unless you go out of your way to disable it, which you shouldn't do but here's how 🙄
C++ RAII semantics are so universally applicable to all programs (sarcasm) that even the C++ standard library provides alternatives to scope guard objects if you don't want to use them. come on man
tragic. pygame.display.flip seems to always imply a vsync stall if you aren't using it to create an opengl context, and so solving the input events merging problem is going to be a pain in the ass. it is, however, an ass pain for another night: it is now time to "donkey kong"

ideally the ordering of those events would be represented in the patch evals but they just happen as they happen. It's plenty responsive with a mouse though. I'll have to try out the touch screen later and see if the problem is basically solved now or not.

it's possible that I'm doing something wrong with the handling of touch events and it's something i can fix still, but now i'm wondering if there's a faster way to confirm if "going ape shit" playing virtual instruments is a normal intended use case for touch screen monitors by their manufacturers and the people who wrote the linux infrastructure for them, or if they all were going for more of a "tapping apps" vibe
and by "going ape shit" i just mean gently flutter tapping two fingers rapidly to generate touch events faster than i could with just one finger, such as to trill between two notes or repeatedly play one very quickly. doing that on one mouse button to generate one note repeatedly very fast feels a lot more aggressive
if i do the same on my laptop's touch pad (which linux sees as a mouse) the same thing happens, but if I really go ham on it such that it engages a click with the literal button under the touch pad, then the events all go through just fine. this is why i'm starting to think there's some filtering happening elsewhere
Awful. What kind of laptop is that? Only seen that with shitty USB touchpads in lapdocks (...and Pinebooks), presumably done for compatibility with Android(?)
From a quick search, Framework's touchpad (PixArt PIXA3854) should be handled by hid_multitouch just fine, so if it shows up as a mouse you may have something misconfigured or some kernel modules missing.
i wonder if there's a normal way to ask linux to let me raw dog the touch screen event stream without any gesture stuff or other filtering, or if this sort of thing isn't allowed for security and brand integrity reasons
someone brought up a really good point, which is that depending on how the touch screen works, it may be fundamentally ambiguous whether or not rapidly alternating adjacent taps can be interpreted as one touch event wiggling vs two separate touch events
easy to verify if that is the case, but damn, that might put the kibosh on one of my diabolical plans
You are deeper beyond where I code, so forgive me if this is dumb. I believe mobile touch screens have multi finger tracking. So: If touch 1 and touch 2 are too fast or similar finger recognition, the touch event array could be stuck at length 1 and simply move the existing event to position 2, like a drag/teleport instead of reading a second touch. Might be that you are tapping faster then the touch device can track, or that both fingers are being read as the same one? Just thoughts.
@pupxel the touch pad into my laptop has two way clicks can be generated, one which is as a gesture, and the other by physically clicking a button. physically clicking the button is working fine. the gesture clicks have the same problem as the multi touch screen which is a different device that does not go through the mouse subsystem and whose mouse events are ignored by my program
my favorite example being <random>, which answers "can we have a standard RNG that sucks less" with a resounding "here's like 10 that suck more, but in different ways, and by the way FUCK YOU for asking"
hmmn. I run realtime kernels and was pleasantly surprised that more recent (6 voice) supercollider patches ran without droping frames with a queneo midi controller. On a raspi 3+ at 1gHz. I CAN crush the box by holding 16 pads at the same time, though 😀 That's with jackd running at rt priority -P98 at 44.1 kHz. On a 2.8 gHz dual core, it's rock solid . If you're running recent hatdware, it can be made as stable as apple's core audio.
I think... maybe... you should make a tile that's a switch you can toggle on and off and it just cuts the path temporarily... and then maybe it has a control pin too? and also, visualization of what is "powered" if that makes sense???

the "proper" way of doing this would be to maintain a ringbuffer that's big enough to fetch as much history as you wish to support, then get the desired range from the rb, collect min/max amplitude for all samples per vertical line and render the bounds (effectively a very simple candle graph).
but i have done this before and it's not fun to write.
I've started having ngscopeclient filters output a quiet NaN when they have a scalar output and are requested to do something that doesn't make sense (missing inputs, contradictory configuration, divide by zero, etc).
(For waveform outputs we already had the ability to simply not output anything, but there's no concept of a null scalar in our object model)
Back when I was working on the Frogatto game, we made it so that if you accidentally divided anything by zero you got 20,000. Turns out your can just define stuff and nobody can stop you. :3

I think it's the second time you mentioned saving and last time you mentioned native file browse control but if you force all patch to be in a single directory (let's say %appdata%/your_app or ~/.config/your_app), you could simply have a button called save and another called load which clear the area and display a button per saved patch

when I started making a touch ui for github.com/poetaster/synthgithub.com/hsaturn/synth, which permits rapid writing of generators & such, I quickly realized, no connectors. I started with 2d shapes and fitting, but got stuck as I started on 3d. In short, I don't want wires like in PD/max or axoloti, because it's impossible to be precise with my fingers on small touch screens. But fitting shapes, worked. Need to start on this again.
Also surprisingly useful to be able to have a free "negate" in the wire itself - like maybe colour/shape the wire differently? Saves a lot of noisy "neg" nodes, and means you don't need a "sub", "revsub", "subn", etc blocks - you just have "add" and also you don't need to be careful about which is which input to "sub" because it doesn't exist.

We have our shepherd in a boarding obedience thing to help with service dog stuff.
