The state of consumer protection in USA:

1. Futurehome creates product (smart home controller stuff) and gets it installed in many homes.
2. They goes bankrupt, get inherited by a new company calling itself Futurehome.
3. They remotely break functions on all their installed units with a firmware update, demanding monthly payments that weren't there before, to provide this function on the local network.
4. Rossmann offers a bounty to forcibly fix the situation.
5. Futurehome calls that illegal.

The pendulum swinging analogy in politics is really crap.

First off, an actual pendulum does not swing interminably. It slows and stops.

Secondly and more importantly: there's nothing inhererent about public consciousness that necessitates a back and forth.

It "swings" in America because we have an entrenched two-party system in a pretend fight with each other, and yet it doesn't swing at all when it comes to oligarchic control of institutions and the increase in state power.

@jmhorner Haha that's kind of hilarious, I didn't think about the pendulum being a part of a clock at all, I was thinking about just the idea of a pendulum. I have, in fact, not been around clocks with pendulums/ pendula for a long time.

I think the rest of what you said does indicate that representative democracy combined with oligarchy is relatively short lived and must fail, regardless of where it occurs.

I currently live in an apartment building and downstairs in the "cardboard recycle room" is what I call the TAILAI (pronounced "tie-lie"... Take An Item, Leave An Item) where folks can exchange "still useful items" for free. Just a couple of weeks ago I actually saw a six foot tall grandfather clock and the pendulum weight must have been at least an eight-inch brass disk.

One of the things that pisses me off is when I go to log in to a website I haven't been to in a while and it says "Incorrect password." But I know it's the correct password because I use a password manager and haven't changed it.

I do the "forgot password/reset password" dance, but then, when I go to enter a "new" password I just copy my old password anyway . . . and THE WEBSITE REJECTS IT SAYING "YOU CANNOT USE AN OLD PASSWORD"!

It knew all the time! It lied to me!

Great protest and great victory in #Syros #Greece. Locals protesting against the genocide in #Palestine in response to the arrival of Israeli - owned cruiseship Crown Iris to the island, forcing it to leave the island.
Israeli tourists onboard were provocative, chanting. Some disembarked and tried to aggressively face the protesters, but were pulled back by security forces.
We cannot carry on with business as usual with the genocide ongoing.
About 400 protesters with huge Palestine flags and other banners gathered at the seafront at the port of Hermoupolis, Syros.

i remember seeing a @nugger post a while back about how western cowboy ballads are extremely similar to old european battle-poetry

i'd like to offer a more specific interpretation: big iron is old norse skaldic poetry through a modern lens. not similar to, IS.

skaldic poetry was written from a third-person objective viewpoint, just like the song. they often contained a moral lesson at the end, such as how humility is often a desirable trait in a warrior, like "Oh, he might have went on livin' but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip"

they tended to rely on poetic descriptors of weapons: loki's "wounding-wand" vs the ranger's "big iron."

they relied on something called kennings which were compound words, such as bow-gautr, meaning bow-warrior, functionally identical to gunslinger. poetic rather than literal descriptions of the person's role

skaldic poetry followed a specific 6 lines verse -> 3 lines chorus -> repeat pattern, which modern music does not follow, but the repetition rhythm of "big iron on his hip" matches very closely and shares the same mnemonic functions

"the town of agua fria" is a heiti: a combination of two common terms to create a setting. "frostwater" is a literal example, "agua fria" means "coldwater"

identical cultural artifacts separated only by time and location. the same people do the same things they always do regardless of time or location.

A doctor in Gaza named Nick Maynard reports that Israeli snipers are now shooting starving civilians in different body parts on different days, based on the injuries people show up with for treatment. There’s a head day, a leg day, a genitals day, etc.

In my office bathroom, there are two light switches: one at the entrance, one at the very far end after a row of stalls. You have to turn both switches on, if you only turn the one at the entrance on, the bathroom is very dimly lit, with barely any light peeking into the stalls.

People are so goddamn lazy that they would rather sit in the stalls, shitting in the dark, than walk across the bathroom to turn on the second light switch.

PS: This doesn't pass the smell test. If there's a good explanation, the press needs to make it clearer. According to the article, it worried about charges of antisemitism. All right. But it's hard to believe that this step was the best way to act on those worries. One of the authors with an article in the issue put it this way: “You just don’t solicit work, peer review it, have people sign contracts, advertise the articles, and then cancel not just one article, but an entire special issue.”
