Also, it's a right shame with Pop!_OS. They could have just released a temporary release with a rebase to Ubuntu 24.04 for underlying packages, but they didn't...
Finally, I wouldn't recommend Linux Mint for gaming for several reasons: First, I've seen reports that there are issues with Cinnamon with Proton and/or Wine having poor gaming performance...

Still, having older kernel and Mesa versions isn't great for gaming.

Third, I'm not a fan of the direction Linux Mint is heading. It feels like they're swimming against the GTK tide and Cinnamon has become a mismatch of GNOME apps, GNOME app forks, and header bars and menu bars.
Finally, I prefer KDE, so I cannot use Linux Mint. Personal preference of course.

in reply to Boiling Steam • • •So this is Protondb data about people comitting their results and reports there?
Because I did four reports back in 2020-2023, when I was using Linux Mint Debian Edition. I only sent them in, because I was able to get games running using workarounds and wanted to share them.
I never made a report for Fedora, because everything worked since I use it.
The steam hardware survey (which should be more accurate) still shows a large portion of Ubuntu machines. Fedora isn't even listed there most of the time.
It's interesting to see what's popular on protondb and it matches other data (like a steadily growing Bazzite share which matches with their increased number of downloads within the last months).
Still, not sure how accurate it is.

Pop_OS still gets recommended to new Linux users.

in reply to Boiling Steam • • •there are still distro news articles about it and I also assumed it was still alive and recommended it.
Because it was one of the Ubuntu based distributions that came with the nvidia driver preinstalled, which is the first big obstacle for beginners in most distributions.
Luckily the person I recommended it to picked Bazzite instead.
