A media company demanded a license fee for an Open Graph image used on my twitter archive. I gave in and paid it, but what does that mean for open graph images and copyright?
Putting an image URL in an Open Graph meta tag implies permission to display that *hotlinked* image on your own website, but in this case, he was hosting a copy of the photo for his static Twitter archive. It's a copyright grey area that's ripe for image licensors to exploit. Not great!
EVERY major social media platform and messaging app hosts local copies of Open Graph images for links posted by users, including Facebook, Threads, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Slack, Reddit, LinkedIn, etc. They're just shaking down individuals who don't have the legal resources to fight a claim.
It's unclear to me whether he downloaded and hosted a copy of the image. He says "Tweetback uses the 11ty OpenGraph Image API" which looks like a proxy, so he was maybe hotlinking rather than hosting it himself? I can't quite parse out exactly what happened
that would mean, for example, that every single public Mastodon post with a linked Open Graph image is similarly ripe for a lawsuit (can easily check this by opening the web view for your first post in this thread for example and looking at the thumbnail image location)
(or: Twitter / X, Facebook, etc. are in violation as well, since they also don't hotlink OG images unless something massive has changed)
