Sprites occur at ~80 km altitude and are caused by electric fields generated by lightning flashes in underlying thunderstorms. When a sufficiently large positive lightning strike carries charges to the ground, the cloud top is left with a strongly negative net charge. In the low pressure of the upper mesosphere the breakdown voltage is low, allowing for an electron avalanche to occur.

I am fixing a wrong that has persisted for over fifty years. When I was fourteen years old I was unmarried and pregnant. In those days I would like to say attitudes were different but in many states we have made no progress. I was constantly pressured to give my baby up to a good family that could offer her more than I could, ever hope to. I said no and became an emancipated minor. I was not treated well in labor and delivery as no doctor would show up. My friend's mother who was an RN delivered her. Just her and I. The hospital staff refused to give me a room so I was on a gurney in a hall way for a few hours before being sent home. The hospital disagreed with the full name I chose and changed it before registering her birth. The birth certificate has been wrong all these years even though she has used the name I intended. Today I hired an attorney to help her to clean this all up. Now is not a good time to have a name discrepancy. Finally. A rose from our garden.
This true story is part of why the push to deny young people sex education infuriates me. The defunding of Planned Parenthood and all of the ways that the religious right undermines young people by keeping them ignorant and making contraceptives and abortion unavailable. The only sex education I received was when my mother told me that letting anyone touch me was like opening Pandora's box. Now if you go to the library and look up the story of Pandora's box it really doesn't say anything about babies.
How awful. I am so saddened to hear how you were treated as a young mother. I volunteered at Planned Parenthood when I was 15. It was a long time ago, but I think everyone was pretty respectful to patients.

But I also think it’s worth saying: Saylor orange-pilled a lot of plebs. Not just governments, boards, or billionaires.
His conviction gave many people — including everyday workers, artists, and builders — the confidence to look deeper into Bitcoin when the media still mocked it. His words reached places most of us couldn’t.
We need the poets and the pragmatists. The street-level vision and the corporate crack in the Overton window. Because if Bitcoin truly is for everyone — then it includes the radical and the rational, the rogue and the CFO.
Let’s check kings — absolutely. But let’s also not forget who helped more pawns see the board.
It’s true Saylor brought the discussion mainstream, but he also coopted the narrative and is clearly pushing for it to be used a database rather than money.
He tells people not to spend it and to borrow against it. He advocates to stop making changes (because then bitcoin could serve more people as a currency). He preaches “trust; don’t verify” by laughing at self custody and mocking proof of reserves while touting an audit by other mega corps instead.
He tells everyone the work is already done and there’s nothing else to do but buy bitcoin in their brokerage or bank account and leave it there: literally the exact opposite of the lesson the whitepaper taught us.
Bitcoin has no value unless it’s being used by as many as possible. As decentralized as possible. A world where 10 governments, 20 banks, and a few hundred companies own the vast majority of bitcoin is a complete failure of the mission and yet if you follow his lead that’s the world you end up in.
I’ve had friends tell me they’re not spending their bitcoin. HODL they say. And yet they’re spending their fiat nonetheless. They’re still spending money but can’t bring themselves to use bitcoin for purchases because this influencer “super maxi” says not to.
Saylor is just the right voice for the right time in the adoption curve. The journey and battles for MOE supremacy will bring other voices to the surface.
