When Fate Knocks at the Door, Take It By the Throat

On Sunday, the IDF massacred 92 aid-seekers. On Monday, it responded to global shock and horror by murdering some 130 Palestinians. Together with the killings on Tuesday, that takes the three day toll to at least 303.

Big Oil famously coined the idea of the ‘carbon footprint’ so that we'd be too busy blaming each other to take collective action against them. I'm starting to suspect that Big Tech has manipulated us into the same trick. Every time somebody switches to a recommended non-Big Tech alternative, someone will immediately tell them why the recommended alternative is evil too now, actually. Or if we moan about a new enshittified experience, it's our own fault for using the wrong non-Big Tech solution.

Climate Change 2025

“This is not a dry spell,” stressed Dr. Mark Svoboda, report co-author and NDMC Director. “This is a slow-moving global catastrophe, the worst I’ve ever seen. This report underscores the need for systematic monitoring of how drought affects lives, livelihoods, and the health of the ecosystems that we all depend on

Google 2021: 12.7 billion liters water

2024: 30 billion liters of water

“These are some of the richest companies in America, and maybe across the world. To ask them to make sure that residents don’t pay more in terms of their electric or water bills, [or] to do right by choosing the right energy sources to not pollute the community or the planet, we feel isn’t too much to ask.”

Huh.. made an interesting discovery. Old YouTube streams (1-2 years old) that previously had a vp9 encoding (something I KNOW for certain, since I have downloads of those streams) now only have h264 encodings (verified with yt-dlp but also in browser). I guess they're trying to save disk space. Very interesting though.

My guess (how I'd do things), they probably have some cleaup utility, where if a video wasn't played for long enough, it will delete all encodings except what is needed for maximum compatibility.

Not the first time I tried to (re)download an old stream, but this is the first time I noticed codecs missing from YouTube's repertoire. Must be a cost cutting measure.

in reply to Alyx Hinata 🇹🇩🚫💀

I've noticed something similar with my lecture livestreams. I always waited for a day or two and then downloaded them, but at some point during the last two years or so they stopped getting vp9 reencodes for higher resolutions. It seems youtube figured that it's cheaper to serve the large files to the few dozen viewers than it is to spend extra compute reencoding and storing extra versions
in reply to matrix07012

@matrix I don't even blame tbh. I've ranted a few times about how stupidly wasteful they are with their reencodes, keeping around old options that barely anyone (if not outright no one) uses anymore. They should be cleaning house. But they probably still went for the wrong option.

Can't imagine them having any significant amount of users whose devices can't play vp9. I really think they should ax h264 instead. Keep it only for livestreaming, since it works better for fast encoding/low latency, but switch to vp9 for long term offering.

The #TPM in your computer is a trusted and #secure #hardware #credential storage #vault. Similar to a hardware security module (#HSM). It provides a #SecureEnclave for the storage of your private keys and other credentials your computer (and your account) uses.

This is operating system agnostic. #Windows may have pioneered the use of TPMs to help thwart network-based credential stealing attacks but they certainly aren't the only OS that makes use of them.

Even Macs have them. They're called "T2 security chips".

When you disable these chips you force the OS to only store your credentials on your hard drive, which means they can easily be extracted by anyone with physical access to your computer and via any network-based vulnerabilities that allows those storage areas to be read.

This is also why #Windows11 now forces the presence of a TPM in order to boot. Why? Because the threats to your credentials are too great. Especially now considering everyone is moving to Passkeys and the like.

Only a goddamn fucking moron would disable their TPM chip in today's world.

That's like refusing to wear your seatbelt while driving. Refusing to wear a helmet while riding your motorcycle. Refusing to have smoke alarms or fire extinguishers in your house. Jumping into shark infested waters without a fucking chainmail suit.

We have things in our lives that provide protection to us for a reason. Making a conscious decision to not use them is simply foolish.

This is palpably noticeable.

George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace

I was so young when I was born
My eyes could not yet see
And by the time of my first dawn
Somebody holding me, they said

I welcome you to Crackerbox Palace
We've been expecting you
You bring such joy in Crackerbox Palace
No matter where you roam, know our love is true

While growing up or trying to
Not knowing where to start
I looked around for someone who
May help reveal my heart - someone said

While you're a part of Crackerbox Palace
Do what the rest all do
Or face the fact that Crackerbox Palace
May have no other choice than to deport you

I welcome you to Crackerbox Palace
We've been expecting you
You bring such joy in Crackerbox Palace
No matter where you roam, know our love is true

It's true, it's true

Some times are good, some times are bad
That's all a part of life
And standing in between them all
I met a Mr. Greif - and he said

I welcome you to Crackerbox Palace
Was not expecting you
Let's rap and tap at Crackerbox Palace
Know that the Lord is well and inside of you

And we, welcome you to Crackerbox Palace
We've been expecting you
You bring such joy in Crackerbox Palace
No matter where you roam, know our love is true

You bring such joy in Crackerbox Palace
No matter where you roam, know our love
Know our love is true

Epiphany from Joan Goodman's book "When Slow Is Fast Enough": IEPs amount to "mandatory behaviorism." Their focus on specific, measurable behaviors "forces teachers to concentrate on narrow accomplishments, restrict free choice," and manipulate kids with extrinsic inducements.

"The more specific the goal, the more control must be exerted over the response, so only an extraordinarily ingenious teacher can be child-directed and flexible yet [still] conform to the IEP law."

George Harrison - My Sweet Lord (1971)

“My Sweet Lord” has overt religious connotations and references. What makes the religious content of this song different from most, however, is its usage of both Christian and Hindu terminology. Harrison’s goal in combining both religions in one song was to call out religious sectarianism, or the perceived notion of conflict between groups. To put it simply, Harrison just wanted everyone to get along, so he wrote a song.

Within the song itself, the Christian references appear via the repetition of My sweet Lord, as well as using the call to faith phrase Hallelujah. Also in the lyrics are the phrases Hare Krishna and Hare Rama, which praise the Hindu god Krishna.

Just a few months after Harrison released “My Sweet Lord,” he was sued by Bright Tunes Music Corporation for copyright infringement. The organization claimed that Harrison had taken unauthorized inspiration from the Ronnie Mack song “He’s So Fine.” (Bright Tunes owned the publishing rights to the song at that point in time due to Mack’s death.)

During the suit, Harrison explained that he actually drew inspiration from The Edwin Hawkins Signers’ song “Oh Happy Day,” not Mack’s tune. Unfortunately, though, Harrison was found guilty of “subconscious plagiarism” on August 31, 1976.

The Somalis in the US are not Somali general population.

What this graph shows is that some of the smartest, hardest working, and entrepreneuring Somalis, filtered by their ability to escape Somalia and reach the US, have an average IQ of 86.

This is the best they have, and it's on the verge of retardation (according to the old definitions prior to 1976).
Just a point above the standard variety of American niggers.
